We had a great dining experience at Blackboard Cafe. Our server, Tamara was professional and friendly. She went out of her way to take great care of us. They had a special Filet burger which was perhaps the best burger ever!! Tender with great flavor. And we love skinny fries so were glad to have them as a side. The cod dish also nicely done. Wandered in as we were walking around town and needed a little something after driving all day. We shared a couple plates and had some drinks. Our server Jennifer, was friendly and attentive as we made our way through the meal. We happened to be there during FIFA World Cup and the TVs in the dining room were playing Beverly Hillbillies and That Girl. I love classic TV, but the WC is a special event and USA was playing. When I inquired about putting the game up (no sound needed), was told it wasn't possible. I was excited to eat at the Blackboard Cafe for dinner after reading the reviews but was a bit disappointed because the chicken marsala I ordered was very very very salty. I had the other people at the table taste my food and they all concurred, the cook went way overboard with the salt. Other than that, the other people that I went to dinner with enjoyed their food. How can I give a six star rating. We are staying in Wallace for a couple of nights. Last night, by chance we came here for a light meal. The Caesar salad with steak was excellent. So we came back. The caprese salad was the BEST we have ever had. The cheese was very fresh and loaded with pesto. Yes, the best, and we spent 2 weeks in Italy. The entree we had was the cod over garlic mashed potatoes. It was delicious. The ambience is very nice with a huge window to look at this quaint little mining town. My daughter recommended this place as we were going to be in town doing some touring. Luckily we got a table pretty fast. It's cute inside and it wasn't loud. Our server was Becky W. She was fine, but my granddaughter's one ordered a huckleberry milkshake and one ordered a coconut milkshake. She brought out a combination of the two because they screwed up and wanted to know if my granddaughters wanted them. They both said no. One granddaughter had the Ahi appetizer and she said it was pretty good. The other one had your basic hamburger with french fries. My husband and I shared the bacon jam, burger, and homemade chips. If you aren't headed to Wallace, go just for this food! This quaint place has a surprisingly wide variety of food choices. Hubby got the Ahi Sandwich and there was more than plenty of great fresh tuna. I got the lobster artichoke dip. I couldn't really enjoy it be because it was so good, I inhaled it. This is uncomfortable for me but after a week away from our experience at the Blackboard Café I feel compelled to review, hoping that management sees this and considers it. We were there on a weekday night, seated at the bar. The wait staff was delightful and engaging. The open kitchen is directly opposite the bar, and I enjoyed the chance to see how the food is prepared and distributed. My wife ordered a salad. I ordered chicken marsala. Both were OK. Then I noticed the cook on the right was preparing salads, among other items, and that he was putting ingredients into the bowl, seasoning them, tossing them with his bare hands, then wiping them on a towel hanging from the back of his pants. He would also wipe his hands on his shirt and pants. Multiple times the guy tried to put on gloves that seemed too small, so he quit and tossed them. At no time did he wash his hands as he handled meat then vegetables. I'm not a clean freak but dude, wash your hands, use utensils, and/or wear gloves! The visuals alone are bad! If anyone comes away from your restaurant and gets a bad stomach bug, the dots are easy to connect! read more

What a gem of a find! We went there 5 or 6 times in the week we were in Wallace. Coffee/tea: very good! Baked goods: to die for! We especially liked the lemon ricotta cake. Had dinner one night. Our table ordered the cod (I think..the fish dish that wasn't the trout), spaghetti and meatballs, steak bites with tortalinni, and chicken piccata. Each dish was excellent in its own right. The marinara sauce was a little sweet, just in case you don't like that style. The people were so very friendly! Every time we went in, they greeted us warmly. On Saturday, July 3-which is the day of the Idaho Statehood parade- it was busy busy! Tamara served us well while we sat outside. We also had her serve us at dinner! We love her! The perfect mid-drive lunch stop for our Seattle-to-Montana road trip. I had the fish-n- chips, wife had the Italian sandwich with poblano soup. The sandwich was huge and stacked with meat, too large to finish. We ate lunch here passing through the area. What a cute town! Its history is a silver mining town. When a fire in the early 1900 burned down buildings, they rebuilt them in brick, many of which you see today when you enter the town. We loved the cafe. We sat on a sidewalk table which had umbrellas to help block the sun and tomato plants in planters to provide some privacy from those passing by. I chose the half summer salad which was a perfect amount. The fresh ingredients and light dressing created a wonderful summer lunch. Our server must have forgot to put in our order (it was so busy with only two people waiting all the tables). She was very apologetic and offered to pay for our lunch, or pay for a dessert. I asked for a Diet Coke to go to 'settle the score' and we all were happy. Great stop in a cute town with lots of history. read more

Wallace keeps surprising with great food options, and the Blackboard was the latest great find. Stopped for lunch and had two delicious sandwiches with my son. The roast turkey with carmelized onions was fantastic - little bits of garlic and gooey cheese, coupled with a toasted bun, paired nicely with a rich lobster bisque. The ahi sandwich was another winner but not quite as expected - rather than a filet, you get minced ahi in a tasty sauce more akin to a chicken salad style sandwich but with rare ahi. It still worked! Friendly attentive service means I'm stopping again. All the sandwich options look good enough to try so I will! read more

On our cross country road trip west to east had us driving through Idaho. Based on some excellent reviews, we decided to come here for lunch. It didn't disappoint! Extensive menu with appetizers, soup, salad, burgers, sandwiches and some entrees. They have lunch hours and dinner hours. And delicious shakes! The dining room is cozy and nice interior. The cafe is attached to a deli and you can shop at their clothing and accessories boutique. Prices were reasonable. Service was friendly and efficient. We stopped here to eat because of the reviews and was disappointed. My husband had a BLT which had a garlic mayonnaise on it that was so strong with garlic it was inedible. My meatball sandwich had the hardest and dryest meatballs I have ever tried to eat. Couldn't eat much of the sandwich. Our friends both had the fish and chips and the fish was odd. We asked the waitress why the batter was so odd and heavy and she said it had Tumeric in it. The batter was over seasoned with turmeric which gave it an odd taste and very heavy. And lastly the fish came out of the fryer so dark, that you knew their oil had not been changed in months Not good food at all. Very disappointing read more

We were absolutely blown away by the food and our wonderful server, Steve! My wife had the trout, my daughter had the chicken caprese sandwich, and I had the southwest jalapeño cheeseburger and not a morsel was left uneaten. Absolutely love the space, very chill and spacious. There's an upstairs with lots of seating to read or do work and on the first floor there's tables too. It's connected to a gift shop too. It also has a restaurant attached which doesn't open till 11am. Dog friendly which is nice. I think it would be better for lunch but my family and I came for coffee and breakfast not realizing they didn't serve breakfast foods. We tried the pastries (cinnamon swirl buns and the cinnamon coffee cake) which were okay. Very big though, we could've all split just 1 instead of each getting our own. For coffee, I got an iced dirty chai with almond milk which was okay and my husband and step daughter did iced mochas which they said were okay as well. Came into town late so we had to run down the street from our hotel to make it to the restaurant by 7:20 to eat, closes at 8. Great service and great food. We had the the Filet Steak, Cheese Tortellini Pesto w/steak and a spicy seafood pasta(I don't see it on the menu online) I asked for medium hot and it was perfect. Good prices too! I even got to try some specialty wines from a wine tasting they had earlier that day. Pretty candlelight window displays. The only criticism was that they extinguished the candles before we were done eating because we were last in the room. Hidden Gem! Best food in North Idaho; puts Tony's on the Lake to shame. We came for the Italian dinner (5-8pm). We did not have drinks - thank you, Wallace Brewing. The Mountain View-sunset from the northern 2-top on historic Wallace's 6th and Cedar will make a perfect backdrop for any date. We started with the mushroom appetizer: opening with Madeira wine, garlic, a spot of heavy spiced cream, savory bacon and 'wild foraged' mushrooms?! It was amazing. Spooned upon crostinis and savored. Second course was salads: Caesar and the Fall Salad. The smoked apples and beets MADE the Fall Salad, the fresh egg yolk in the Caesar's in turn completed the salad. At this point we were impressed, the sun was setting, the service has been great. Would the main course finish strong? Yea. It did. The lasagna was a little under temp (we added meatballs... the veal ) but noodles and sweet tomato sauce was the best. Wife's perspective: "We had cheesecake, so good, it had brownies in it! And it was really great, I wanted most of it but my fat husband ate most of it!" Passing through the area and we decided to stop. What a great find!! They have a extensive sandwich menu and a decent selection of salads. We had the beef dip, the prime beef sandwich, the chicken schnitzel sandwich, and the Fish and chips. All the food was excellent. The only downside is that the fries came out cold, but the server made it right and brought out a new batch of hot and tasty fries. The restaurant itself was comfortable and inviting.
