One of my favorite restaurants of all time and I mean delicious. The food is delicious, the service is awesome, the atmosphere is nice.

I ordered the lasagna and it was the best meal I have had on my trip to Idaho so far. We sat in front of the chef and admired his work. The service and atmosphere was friendly and great. My friend ordered the chicken Marsala and it was was wonderful as well. I would come back here anytime I am in the area or passing thru. read more

Food was fantastic. However the server was pretty rude. The four of us sat down to a table with 2 menus. We sat for 10 minutes without a server checking on us. When she finally did she didn't bring us water, silverware, napkins, or two additional menus. She said, "do you know what you want"? When I asked if we could get a couple more menus you would of thought I asked for her first born child. She said oh you couldn't share? She left and came back and gave the menus. When she came back she said," do you know what you want now that you have your own menus"? The food took a very long time for it to come out. It's a shame the service was so bad because the food is good. I can't deal with the snide comments. I am the customer and treating customers that way for asking for something that should be a given is ridiculous. read more

Service was great! My ribeye sandwich was fantastic as was my sons burger. My wife got a salad and was underwhelmed. It was partially a preference issue but the salad was all arugula and was overwhelmed by excessive blue cheese. Had Oreo cheesecake for dessert and it was awesome! read more

This will be the kind of review you think just could not be true... but it is... really! The food and service and experience were all amazing but that is not all there is to our story. My wife and I are traveling in our restored Airstream through national parks in the Northwest. We knew we would be in Wallace Idaho on our 46th anniversary so I began looking for a good restaurant for a dinner out two months ago. I found the Blackboard Cafe and its' great reviews and made a reservation for Monday Aug 30. The day before our dinner I called to confirm our rez and was told I was booked. But then on Monday morning I received a call from someone at the restaurant apologizing for the mistake; it seems they are not open on Mondays... I said I was disappointed since I had made plans so early but Understood. 15 minutes later the owner called me back and apologized again and said they felt terrible about the mistake and had decided to open up for a private dinner for us if we would come.. mind you, they didnt know it was a special nite for us...I was shocked...I thought to myself, no one would do this... but they did! We went at 6pm and were greeted warmly by Rob and Luanne. Rob was going to be our personal chef and Luanne served dinner. We shared a few stories with them about food and places we all had in common. My wife and I both had Caesar Salads.. she had shrimp scampi and I had chicken picatta.. we shared a bottle of Pinot Noir... the food was amazing... fresh and the flavors popped..the wine was great, especially for the very reasonable price.. we then shared a fresh baked slice of blueberry pie ala mode...which was too good. We ate the whole thing....We have eaten in some of the finest restaurants in the world, but none did we enjoy more than Our dinner at Blackboard Cafe... oh and when it was time for the check... Luanne said she and Rob wanted it to be their treat for our anniversary... my wife was holding back tears... not because it was free, but because Rob and Luanne were so kind..and that seems rare these days... Im guessing your next visit will not be free, but it should be soon and it will be worth whatever you pay. read more

This place is fantastic. Everything here is delicious, but the pasta is particularly good. The bolognese is wonderful, as is the chicken piccata. But my favorite on the menu is the chicken marsala -- WOW. Perfect balance of flavor, perfectly-cooked chicken... a real treat. read more

Heard a lot of great things about this place so we decided to try it out after doing the mine tour. It's mostly sandwiches during lunch but they have some pretty epic selections like a ribeye or filet mug on sandwich. I went with the ribeye sandwich and my wife got the special which was some pulled pork tacos. Both of them were delicious! They recommended coming in for dinner hours when the menu changes to Italian. If lunch was this good I cant wait to try their dinner out. read more

Food 5/5; had steak and chicken Marsala.. both delish. Service was terrible. Waited 20m (thought it was ok bc Labor day weekend) it was acceptable). No one talked or acknowledged us while we unknowingly waited, then we're given a seat and quickly ushers out., shortly after food arrived. We were planning to eat here anyway but when we walked by and smelled the garlic and butter emanating from the kitchen onto the sidewalk, that convinced us. They had appropriate indoor seating for Covid-19 rules. Our server was friendly and patient. We split (not big eaters) the Chicken Lemon Pesto and a Cesar salad. Both were delicious! The lemon sauce was a perfect combination of creamy and tart with the baked-in lemon slices not overpowering the pesto. I usually am not a big fan of the bread with a meal, but this was also delicious and great for soaking up the buttery sauce. My photo shows a half portion. read more

We wanted to go to a different restaurant, but choice one and two were both closed on a Tuesday. So I have to say thumbs up for being open. The wait time for making 3 sandwiches was extensive, and we considered leaving. I looked around at all of the tables and only two people out of 15 were eating. Our food finally arrived and I must say my ahi sandwich was good, while my mom liked the Cuban. My husband was disappointed in the pork belly sandwich. It was very sloppy and the "Cole slaw" was just shredded cabbage. The pork was not that great either. I think they need to work on their speed or plan their time better. The food is good if you have lots of time. read more

Would love to give this cute little place a good review but we were never served. I have never been turned around and not even been given an option to wait for a table. Came in with a group of 6 (which isn't huge, right?) and we're told that we just couldn't eat there at all without a reservation. When staying in Coeur D'Alene, we decided to check out Wallace, ID. Having lunch at the Blackboard Cafe, pretty much made the whole trip there worth it!! It's a small place with one server for the tables inside, the bar and a table or two outside on the sidewalk. Our server was amazing! Hubby and I walked in as a busload of people were just finishing their meals, so in fairness, she should have been tired and cranky, but she was neither of those things. She handled herself as a true professional and even made small talk with us and had a smile on her face the entire time we were there! The inside decor is quirky and fun which is perfect for me. They had a chalkboard wall with amazing drawings and quotes and had an interesting selection of movies playing silently on the small tv's in the restaurant. Other than having to drink out of mason jars (I can't wait for that fad to go away!), I liked that they served the food on a mix of china pieces. It adds a nice touch of color and fun! Hubby and I shared the Mesquite turkey sandwich with chips and when we saw the portion size, we were very glad that we shared. It was an excellent sandwich and I would love to try more of their menu or the Italian menu served in the evenings. This was top notch food! Just because we were enjoying ourselves so much, we decided to top off our visit with a chocolate mint shake. Perfection! I would love to have this place in my neighborhood in Kansas City! read more

I wasn't quite sure about eating there, but I'm so glad we did. I was with a group of women (19 of us) and the server did a great job. She took care of all of us with kindness and was on top of everything. Did was great I ordered Garlic Shrimp on pasta (that wasn't the name of it, but you get the point). An absolute must-stop in Wallace, both for atmosphere and for the food itself. It's where I take friends from out of town for great food, drinks, and to experience the charm of Wallace. I especially recommend the mushroom app, and, as silly as it sounds, the cheeseburger -- it's the best burger I think I've ever had. Their pasta dishes are always a rich and delicious dinner. Blackboard was pretty much the only option we had for dinner on our first night in Wallace and the only seating was at the bar directly facing the kitchen. Surprise...surprise...the service was excellent, the food was good and the entertainment of watching the dance of the staff keeping up with a very busy crowd was delightful. I don't like to leave negative reviews ever. This place is a cute little restaurant located in a quaint little town, Wallace. We stopped by on our way back to Montana ahead of our flight back to Texas. The food was good but I have never in my whole life felt so uncomfortable in any other place. I do not know for certain if the staff and other customers were staring at us because my fiancé and I both had our face masks on and literally no one else in town did or if it was because my fiancé is a darker skin tone than literally everyone else in the town. Either way, we are well traveled and no one had ever made us feel so unwelcome. I know it's human nature to stare at someone who looks different, but it's rude. read more

We decided to give it a try and we are happy to say that it was absolutely delicious!! Would not have thought that we would have a gourmet dinner in such a small town!! If you're in Wallace or even driving by, this place is a must-visit. I ordered the French Dip Sandwich and it is hands-down the best I've ever had. The meat is perfect, sauce delicious and the au jus was more like a French onion soup. I also upgraded to a side Cesar which was loaded with cheese, just the way I like. We chose to stop in historic Wallace on our way home from Yellowstone. The Blackboard Cafe had an amazing menu so we chose this restaurant. It was crowded on a Wednesday (being one of the few restaurants in town open) and it was worth the wait! The staff were polite even though they were slammed. What an awesome experience! We were driving through and looking for a quick place to grab a bite and we stumbled on this cafe. What luck! I had a French dip that hosted a large chunk of tender rib eye and came with a bowl of onion soup. The soup almost stole the show because of it's distinct flavor. It had a familiar flavor that was unusual to French onion soup, maybe sage, but worked fantastic. My wife had a turkey sandwich that had a bacon type sauce. I don't remember what it was called, but it was delicious. The bread wasn't too heavy and the sauces are unique and tasty. The room is small and decorated with Alice and wonderland pictures. We were driving through as we headed home from Yellowstone. We were starving after driving for hours and looked this place up on Yelp. Our socks were knocked off!!! The cafe shares space with an espresso place, a bookstore and a clothing shop. My husband ordered the meatball sandwich and I ordered the chicken schnitzel. Both were AMAZING! The food overall was fairly good. My wife had the Idaho pineapple glazed trout - not the best and she does not recommend it. She prefers the taste of fresh trout, not pineapple. I had the lamb shank - the flavor was very good, but the shank was small. Our young son had the buttered noodles with lobster on top. Very buttery and he felt a bit nauseous a while later. Food prices were on the high side for the portions received and the overall basic atmosphere of a simple cafe. Service was just okay. We were seated immediately without reservations before the crowd arrived, although it was a basic cafe/market style place. It was a warm day outside and they lacked sufficient AC, so it was uncomfortably warm inside on the kitchen side. Our server was on the slow side, took 15 minutes to serve my bottled beer. She also only brought us two glasses of water when there were three of us. After 10 minutes we had to request another glass. We finally received our food about 45 minutes later. It took us about 30 minutes to finish our meal and drinks. 5 minutes after we received our bill and we were just about to get up and leave, another server came to us and told us there were others waiting for the table who had a reservation. Having gone to thousands of restaurants over my lifetime, I have never experienced that type of pushiness in any restaurant. If I didn't know any better, I'd say it was typical of a New York style, hurry up, eat, pay and get out atmosphere. We will not be back. read more

I travel a great deal and every now and then you run across a gem and this is one of them. Small little local place that is absolutely amazing. Not much room here, so unless you come early you better get a Rez. But it's so good you should consider ditching your pals if there is one seat open at the bar. There were four of us and we each ordered something different. All four plates were delicious! Service is outstanding and the atmosphere is one of a kind. It's been a few years since we have been here. In fact they have moved a couple blocks over since our last visit. Great!!! The Reuben and the Cuban are still outstanding. The service is still good. Yelp has failed me....... stopped by this place on our way thru town because the yelp reviews were A+ While I loved the setting & location the food was less than mediocre. Most people in our group ordered sandwiches & all left disappointed. The lunch meat used is just processed pre sliced low end lunch meat, the cheese (Cheddar they say) was also processed presliced fake cheese. What a great opportunity it's this place has to serve up proper deli style sandwiches. Carved meats, REAL cheese (like the stuff they are selling in their grab & go coolers). My kids both ordered the toasted cheese sandwiches & wouldn't touch them - The processed plastic cheese melted out of the sandwiches & made the entire thing stick to their plate. My order came out wrong & no efforts were made to correct it. This place is charging 5 star prices for 1 star quality. Travelers beware this place felt like a place they made look really cute to bring the tourists in & then they charge you $15 bucks for poor quality food. read more
