My bowl was 90% raw spinach with 2 eggs, maybe 1/8 of an onion that was sautéed, a few mushrooms and a sprinkle of shredded cheese. It also had 4 pieces of small cubed potatoes. Basically tasteless. Wicked tasty, large and plenty of toppings and cream cheese options. They only seemed to have 4 types of bagels on the menu but that was fine by me since I don't stray from an everything bagel. Haven't been here in a few years, well worth the 20 minute drive. The waffle sandwich and loaded home fries were both creative and high quality dishes that we absolutely loved. Coffees were solid too. Very generous portions and they did not skimp on the toppings for the loaded home fries, often places will just throw a little bit of the topping on top and up-charge you, but we were thoroughly satisfied and there was bacon and cheese in almost every bite. Wide variety of hot and cold drinks - from some of the best coffee to an assortment of tea. My go to is the hot coconut latte which has the right hint of coconut and none of the sweetness. The food here is pretty good. I have never not liked what I ordered. My only grime with this place is the online ordering. I have to wait in the same line people order in and it defeats the convenience of online ordering. Sometimes I wait 5-10 minutes just to pick up an order just because several people ahead of me are ordering, when I ordered 15-20 minutes ahead of time. Also, my only other feedback is that the home fries could use some peppers and onions to add some flavor. Other than that, i like it here. read more

*** 5/2019 *** I found Blackbird online when I was looking for a place in Acton that I could grab lunch that opened before 11am. Blackbird Cafe is located in Acton Woods Plaza, right on the corner of the intersection of Great Road and Main Street. As such, parking was no trouble. Two tables with seating were set outside, but inside it felt a step above the diner that I came to realize were my preconceived notions. Colorful walls contrasted well with the dark wood paneling. Dine in or out, everyone places their order at the counter. Having perused their menu online prior to my visit, I was a bit taken aback as I checked out the menu onsite. Where were the bowls I was planning on having? Turned out I was early by maybe a week/weekend - their menu was in the middle of a change over, and it had yet to be given the go here at their Acton location. But one of the folks who knows what's going on was kind and attempted to do his best to get me what I wanted. The results - a breakfast bowl of bbq pork, raw red onion, roasted red pepper, julienned carrots, pickled cucumber, cheese, toasted sesame seeds, cilantro on a bed of greens and an order of their quinoa kale hashbrowns, with a cup of sauce (presumably roasted sesame dressing, which I didn't sample), and two eggs on the side (cause they initially forgot to include it. Given that it was nearly a half hour before I got to dig into the bowl (due to the wait for the egg, on top of the travel time to my destination) I did not fault the lack of crisp in their hashbrowns. The meat was cubed, tender, and tasty. It felt to be a tasty and healthy meal as a whole. As I was standing around waiting for my order, I observed plates of food passing by me on their way to their seated customers, and they looked pretty good and of decent portions. Pastries displayed at the counter are made in house, such as scones, and cannolis. Three individual bathrooms are located down a hall to the right. When I arrived, a pleasant young man offered to assist me at the counter, and found me my sack lunch. One thing I learned - a panini does not handle being taken to go too well. They wrapped it in aluminum foil and paper to keep the sandwich clean and warm. But it also got soggy as the moisture had no way to escape. Since one of my favorite things about paninis is the crisp warm bread, this did not do. But oh well, I understood it was my own fault for ordering this. She was apparently flustered about something and lashed out at me, but someone with such a short temper should not be in customer service. This place is obnoxious! They have always been extremely rude and well known for it locally. They require a 12% tip for their kitchen staff and demand a tip in addition, so it's not inexpensive in any regard. Clearly they don't want to pay their staff and probably why they are rude. Food is ok but the grief isn't worth it. Look at how the owners respond to feedback re: reviews. They gaslight snarky remarks to people and refuse to acknowledge they are wrong. I think their responses more than the reviews reflect how horrible they are more than anything. If Blackbird cafe needs so many service charges and tips to pay their staff they should question if they are running a business that can support paying proper wages. For $8 a breakfast sandwich? Come on. Called to ask for a refund or a new one, but dealt nothing but attitude on the phone and was ensured the the "chef" is very experienced and knows what they are doing. Then hung up the phone on me. I had ordered soup 2 times for take out and both times when I got home to eat them, I couldn't believe how scant the contents was in the cup. The flavor of the broth in both soups was delicious but if I didn't know any better I would have thought i just ordered broth. Absolutely atrocious experience here. Went off peak hours and was patient ordering breakfast for about 20 minutes. 20 minutes turned into 30 and then 40 for a bagel and breakfast burrito. The staff were unapologetic and rude when approached about the status of our food and the breakfast burrito did not come out until 45 minutes after ordering. The future of our world is safe. I really like this place. They do fancy food but they also have simple food. I like that the food is freshly made and healthy. It's a very nice mix. I like their coffee. The room is quiet with adequate WiFi. There is a very nice mix of multi-generational customers. Like all modern indy restaurants, Blackbird Cafe struggles with the ubiquitous truculent glares of the newly hired high school girl forced to be pleasant to an unattractive old person for the first time. But overall Blackbird is well worth frequenting. And, anyway, thanks to good management, the new hires do get over their attitude pretty quickly. The management is good. I once got a coffee cup with a poorly fitting lid which split, fortunately, into my car cup holder. The manager was good with this. A cheerful smile & a replacement cup of coffee. I'm a very fair person who visitors many restaurants and I will say I was giving this place another chance after our company decided to no longer order lunch there for the staff. too many mistakes like wrong food, missing sides actually once they found a hair in the salad. I know...gross. however today I was ordering something very simple and what a surprise. first of all, dont call. whoever answers the phone is not there and they cannot answer a single question. I ask the nice girl taking order my question and she answered it so I ordered the simplest thing. well what I ordered was on the menu (breakfast) for $8. ok no problem. it was a side. however check was $12 and I ordered nothing else. I asked why and she said they added an up charge of 20% for kitchen staff and this was not the gratuity so my normal tip for a simple thing no waitress is 20% so now it turns into a 40% gratuity basically and the side I ordered was $8 but they charged $10 because their register just rings it up that way. so their was no option to order it correctly. this was powered by TOAST so my order ended up more expensive than if I ordered the FULL ORDER instead of the side. makes ZERO SENSE so I said I'm all set and void this charge and left. then she couldn't even give me a receipt. now I know why my office voted to remove them from our lunch options list. this place needs serious help. This is what breakfast should be! I had the Goat Cheese and Chive Scramble with home fries and sour dough toast this morning. In a world of ready made breakfast "goods", this breakfast was like a warm hug. Every inch of it is as cooked to perfection. Even the toast was the perfect mix of tangy, crispy and crunchy! Excellent place for breakfast and brunch in Acton. I had a great goat cheese omelette and special iced tea. I can also recommend the French toasts. The place is very nice and cozy. I ordered a panini. I assumed that meant it came on bread. Apparently, I was wrong. Make sure you SPECIFY that you want your sandwiches to come on bread. While the actual contents were perfectly tasty, albeit overpriced, this is not a panini. It would behoove Blackbird to make sure their menu is clear on when something is on bread and when it isn't. Also, there is debris from what appears to be burnt food in the foil, but the actual "panini" isn't burnt nor does it show any signs of being burnt. Recently went to the new Burlington location with my husband (Burlington didn't have a yelp yet and wanted to give some feed back) Everything tasted good but my eggs Benedict was extremely cold. Toast was really hard to cut through but might be because it was sitting for a bit. I didn't see any heat lamps, so probably contributed to the situation. My husbands burrito was hot so I'm thinking they made mine first :-(. Everything tasted delicious but should be more conscious of the timing of orders. Nothing is worse then cold eggs.
