Our server was incredibly kind, attentive, and quick! They have a good selection of drinks from alcoholic drinks to mocktails to sodas. The best? The food of course! Everything was amazing. We were happy with all 3. We both devoured the chicken al limone, seriously so good. A delicious lemon sauce with capers and sun dried tomatoes. Yum! The Caesar salad was great. We got take out from here on a Wednesday night near closing time. The outdoor patio was super cute with lots of ambiance. Unfortunately, we arrived too late to enjoy it. We got the veggie risotto and the summer grain bowl. We did not get to try any drinks. I wish the risotto was better and it was actually risotto. It was more like cheesy rice with a few starchy vegetables in it. The summer grain bowl was heavy on the arugula and quinoa, and somewhat stingy on the additives (grapes, strawberries and almonds). The staff had a hard time figuring how to take my payment, though were very nice and apologetic about it. No napkins or eating utensils were included in our take out bag. I'm sure the noise in the main dining room could be off-putting to some. Rather than think of this as a negative, I prefer to think of it as a side-effect to positives such as large crowds even on slow nights of the week in a historic building setting. The fixtures on the ceiling to buffer the noise do help somewhat. I have local friends who say they prefer the food over the beer here, but we enjoyed our beers as much as the food we had (a porter and a raspberry lager). I like their description of foods as being upscale comfort food. That was especially true of the appetizer we got, the crispy polenta bites with greens and mushrooms. I'd not had anything quite like that before. That also goes for the grilled mac & cheese sandwich with short rib and kimchi. I was expecting the sandwich I ordered, the chicken caprese, to be somewhat messy with the balsamic glaze, but there was just enough on it to add flavor without mess. Though while I enjoyed the well-prepared sweet potato fries (crispy on the outside, tender inside), I don't think a ramekin of ketchup for dipping does the side justice. I should have perhaps asked if I could get a ramekin of the balsamic glaze, or perhaps offer a couple of dipping options. We went for dinner tonight and sat outside on the patio. It's lovely! Very comfortable! The service was exceptional! They have nice umbrellas so the sun wasn't in my eyes. The patio is dog friendly and they take great care of the pups, bringing fresh water bowls and great doggy burgers. My son and his boys loved the food, they go regularly and always are happy with it. Every few years, I do this full mind/body reset called 75 Hard. Well, I actually tweaked it a bit to 75 Semi-Hard, because what it entails is 75 days of: No alcohol (but I allow myself 2 drinks per week) 2 45 minute workouts a day (at least one must be outside) A gallon of water (I do 100 oz, because I'm a hypnotherapist and at a gallon a day I'd need to wear a diaper.) One daily selfie Daily meditation I'm telling you this to set the stage for yesterday's adventure... As you all know, yesterday was a lovely 90 degree day. So I decided to get my two 45 minute workouts done with a long walk in nature. I drove to Concord, and realized that I have never taken a walk through a cemetery before. Isn't that weird? Being that I see dead people, and I often do my best to avoid the living, a graveyard stroll seems like it would be a regular part of my activities. But, no. For those of you who enjoy a good cemetery walk, I recommend Sleepy Hollow in Concord. It's so peaceful! The cemetery trail led me to an outlet that led to a trail that led to...I don't know, which was the problem. Although I was certain I took a perfectly straight path, I somehow got turned around. It was so hot. I was so hungry. I COULD NOT wait to drink an ocean of water and a buffet of food. But 90 minutes after I set out, when I got to the point where I should have been about 5 minutes from my car, I had a feeling. A bad one. So I checked my phone and it informed me that I was still an 80 minute walk from my car. By the time I got back to my car, I was SO dehydrated. I checked my phone to take a peek at the recommendations you lovely people left for me. I recently had sushi, so Karma was out (although an excellent choice; I love their food.) Colonial Inn felt too hearty for such a hot day. And then I realized that I was relatively close to Rapscallion. I drove over and the parking lot was full. There wasn't a single spot left, and they don't have off-street parking. I was too tired to drive anywhere else, so I called just to see if they happened to have other options for parking. They did. For those of you who visit, know that across the street there is a complex with a vet and a green and yellow building that kind of looks like a house. You can park by the green and yellow house (but not in front of the vet office.) You're welcome! I dragged my withered ass to the restaurant, and was pleasantly surprised to be seated at an outdoor table. I had assumed they would be full, since it was such a beautiful day. Rapscallion has the BEST outdoor seating area. It's kind of private, the tables are far enough away from each other so you aren't hearing everyone's conversations, and there are umbrellas. It's the little things. There's also just...a vibe. I don't know if it's because I only tend to go on beautiful spring/summer days, but it gives me vacation energy. Everyone always seems to be having a great time. No matter when I go, there's always this air of festivity. I begged the waitress for a giant carafe of water, and she was on it. I sucked it down like I had just crossed the Sahara. I then ordered a salmon burger with the option to add on one of their salads for an upcharge. I chose the Asian salad. It's not like anyone is going to have multiple orgasms over a salmon burger, but it was a good one. And the salad was perfect with it. The food here is always on point, the service is great, but what you really come for is the atmosphere. Even in cooler seasons, it feels like a hit of summertime magic. Just know that if you come on a beautiful day, you'll probably have to be in the loop around their parking situation. Right across the street, green and yellow building. Solo factor: 10/10. Rapscallion in Acton is a staple for my wife & I. It's our anniversary spot, our Valentine's Day spot... and basically where we go for any special occasion. The quality, the service & the atmosphere keep us coming back. This particular time I ordered the scallops & grits, while my wife got the steak frites. Both entrees were solid and very generous in portion size. Both proteins were cooked perfectly and the sides were all nice and complimentary. We also got the mussels, and a special they had for this particular evening. Now - this particular special they had... I will tell you - no lie - this might have been the best thing I've ever had at Rapscallion... SHRIMP. BISQUE. That bowl of bisque... it can't really be described. I just hope if you make your way here... I really hope they have it again so everyone can experience. That's all my wife and I talked about the remainder of our dinner. I give the benefit of the doubt only once. A bit of background: Last year, I took my family (party of nine) for dinner at this establishment. After eating and ordering desert and all, I asked for the bill. The bill came and the wait person brought me the credit card machine with the tip choices on top. I chose 20% and paid and we all left. Later I was thinking that the bill was more than I expected and then I thought--perhaps they charge me service upon which I also tipped. All in all a 40% tip. That was my bad for not having properly checked the bill and I take responsibility. This year, we went back--same party of nine-- and had lunch. This time around I checked the menu where with the smallest font possible it indicated that there will be a 20% surcharge for party of six or more. Once we were done, I asked for the bill and the wait person, again, brought me the credit card machine with the choices of tip right in top, placed the machine in front of me and left... no word of warning about the 20% charge already on the bill. I check the bill and in fact a 20% surcharge was added. I think if you are going to charge extra--which I can tolerate and with which I have take no issues -- it is incumbent upon you to tell your customer that a 20% surcharge has been made--just so the customer is aware in case they have not studied the menu form top to bottom including the very fine print I think it would be courteous to do so and failing to do that it appear like an active effort to mislead and take advantage of a customer who perhaps was too preoccupied with friends and convention to do a study of the bill and/or the menu. I don't care if your food is good and cooked to the proper temperature I don't care if you brew your own beer and I don't care if overall the food is good. I dislike being maneuvered. Further--I had ordered a side of fries which came very late at the end of our meal... I sent it back because it was too late and they still charged me for it. Really... for $4? Anyways if you are going to this establishment make sure you are on your toes and study all written material because you are on your own and if you make a mistake no one will be tell you otherwise. ----------- In response to the owner's comment below, I am adding this edit since Yelp does not allow me to respond to the comment made by the owner: Hi Peter-Thanks for the quick response. I can tell that reviews matter to you and I appreciate that. I think you missed my point. I have no issues with leaving a tip. 20% is reasonable and I have no issues with it-as I mention in my review. What I objected to is the fact that I was not notified of the addition and the CC machine was presented to me on the tip page without more... inviting an assumption that a tip is welcome even tho a surcharge has already been added to the bill. I am not now nor in my review asked for a refund. In a nutshell: let your customers know if there is a surcharge ether at the start of the meal or when the server hands the CC machine to the person who is paying. That's all it takes. Just a great place for a meal with friends or family. Indoor dining area is smaller, but comfortable. But when the warm weather hits, the outdoor space is where to be. Had been a while since I was here. The last time from what I remember it was good. This time not so much. Upon arrival first question was of we had Overpriced for mediocre food, to be honest. Had pork belly bites, clam chowder, side of parmesan cheese risotto and fish and chips. Never have I ever got fish and chips where I needed to use a knife to cut through it. Another patron had the fish and chips and we just assumed maybe he had it cooked more. Not the case. Pork belly bites were good, I did like the combo of arugula and pickled onions. Clam chowder was not the best I've ever had. Wasn't super creamy, had more of a opaque milk like look and consistency. Wouldnt go back. Just a personal choice. I met a couple friends on a Friday at lunch. The weather was nice so we sat in the outside seating, which was great! We ordered cocktails, beers, and ice teas. The seasonal bourbon cocktail and IPA were especially excellent. We also ordered apps to share - the calamari, Mediterranean plate, and polenta with mushrooms app. All the food was delicious but the portions were a smidgen skimpy. We also had to ask for bread for the calamari (which was served in broth) and it took about 15 minutes. But when the bread finally showed up, it was really nice buttered toast :). This is about my 6th time coming here over the years and will probably be my last. First time having lunch outside a few years back was lovely, and the food was good. Unfortunately it seems to go down every time I have gone since. Last night we went after a movie in Maynard. We sat at a high top in the bar, the larger room was way too noisy for us. Service was a little slow, even though there were only a few people at the bar and no one else at any tables there. The beer is pretty good, the pork belly bites were tasty, if small. For dinner, hubby ordered the cheeseburger and sorry, for $23.00 it was so not worth it! skinny little patty on an oversized bun. I ordered the chicken roll up. The chicken was dry, the prosciutto was rubbery, and here is a tip for the kitchen, try roasting or broiling those brussel sprouts, it would take them up a notch. They were very bland if they didn't have the sauce from the chicken. Overall it has become overpriced for mediocre food. These days with money being tighter than ever, you need to carefully pick and choose where to go out to eat. I don't mind paying for it, if it's worth it. read more

I have been to Rapscallion several times before. I usually order their delicious smoked barbecue wings appetizer with blue cheese dressing along with a pint of one of their on tap microbrewed beers. This time feeling a bit more adventurous I tried the polenta with truffle mushrooms. Fantastic. The mushrooms were sautéed with a very aromatic truffle oil. The polenta squares delicately pan fried with a golden brown crust. Amazingly good. Put my entrée I ordered Chicken a la Limone with Parmesan risotto and a lemon caper white wine sauce with artichokes, tomatoes and mushrooms. Deliciously lemony buttery goodness. I consider myself something of a root beer enthusiast -- or, as my friends lovingly say, "that guy who takes soda way too seriously." I've driven hours out of my way for obscure microbrews, swapped bottles through online collector groups, and even keep a small notebook dedicated solely to tasting notes (yes, with a section for mouthfeel). So when I heard that this restraint boasted a "world renowned" house root beer, I all but sprinted there, taste buds primed for greatness. Let's start with presentation. The mug was frosted, which I appreciated -- a promising first impression. But then I noticed the foam: thin, short-lived, gone in seconds. A proper root beer should have a creamy, persistent head that clings to the glass like it's auditioning for a Guinness commercial. This was more like someone whispered the word "foam" near the glass and called it a day. The first sip? Sweet. Painfully sweet. I'm not opposed to sugar -- root beer, after all, is supposed to be a little indulgent -- but this was the kind of sweetness that overpowers everything else. The vanilla was there, faintly, but no complexity behind it. I waited for that earthy whisper of sassafras, that spicy pop of wintergreen or anise that gives real craft root beer its signature depth. Nothing. Just syrup, bubbles, and disappointment. The carbonation itself felt uneven -- almost like it couldn't decide whether it wanted to be a soda or a syrupy dessert sauce. Halfway through the glass, it had gone nearly flat, which I suspect wasn't by design. "World renowned"? I've had gas station root beers with more personality. The server told me they brew it in-house, and I believe them, but perhaps they should brew it better in-house. I asked if they use real sassafras root or extract, and the poor guy blinked at me like I'd just asked him to solve a physics equation. That told me everything I needed to know. Ambiance-wise, it's a charming enough place -- rustic wood tables, soft lighting, a bit of that old-timey Americana charm. Perfect setting for a proper root beer moment. Unfortunately, the drink didn't live up to the atmosphere. Would I recommend it? Only if you're here for nostalgia or novelty -- not if you're chasing flavor. As a root beer connoisseur, I left more bemused than satisfied, wondering how this became "world renowned." Maybe it went viral once. Maybe the world just doesn't know better. Final Verdict: 2 out of 5 frothy mugs. Points for presentation and enthusiasm, but the flavor left me yearning for the sharp bite and creamy finish of a true root beer classic. My family and I recently came here for lunch and we had a delightful experience. The staff is incredibly friendly, we were warmly welcomed and sat right away in the dining room. They also have a nice patio area, we skipped it since it was a pretty hot day. The food was standard pub far but very well executed and we all cleaned our plates. The beer is a must, my husband and I got the honey ale and the sour they had on tap and both were incredible. We even bought some beer to take home which we continue to enjoy. Every time we eat here, which is often, the food and service is consistently good. The risotto is excellent and the day we went cannoli were on the menu. These were delicious and really well made. Crispy shell but not greasy. Perfect amount of sugar in the ricotta which made them an excellent choice for dessert. The staff here work overtime to make sure your meal is a pleasant experience. Rapscallion is a great little restaurant with an awesome menu and some of the most personable wait staff I have ever had the pleasure to meet. Came here with a group of work friends (six of us in total) at the recommendation of one of the trainers, and it was a spot-on hit. It was a beautiful day to dine outside, and we had plenty of space to ourselves under one of their large permanent tents. Our server was so friendly that any outside observer would have concluded we were all old friends seeing each other after a long absence. She had some great menu recommendations, and I took her up on the drink of the day offer. I'm glad I did, it was fantastic, and everyone else seemed very pleased with their beverages of choice as well. The food itself was great and very filling, and I really enjoyed my pasta. The pace of our drinks and meal was quite nice and added a lot to the experience. Meal pacing is very underappreciated in our "rush there and rush back" world, but it really made it a relaxing experience for the group despite us not knowing each other too well. All things considered, I really enjoyed Rapscallion and would be glad to return again if the opportunity presented itself. I was visiting a friend in the area and we decided to come here for lunch on a hot Saturday in June. I was worried about eating outside in the heat, but we were able to get a shaded table for 2 right away. I ordered the meat flatbread with mushrooms and my friend got the classic cheeseburger with fries. It was your standard american fare lunch - just what we expected. The seafood pasta dish sounded amazing, but was a bit heavy for a sweltering Saturday at lunchtime. We also ordered some cocktails. My friend had the paloma and decided that while it was refreshing, it was pretty basic and not very strong. I started with the pomegranate martini (vodka, pama liqueur, lime) and then went to the bourbon smash (bourbon, mint, agave, lemon). Both drinks were decent. The service was very friendly, but there were long breaks at times (we waited at least 20 minutes between being done and flagging her down for the check). Luckily, we weren't in a hurry. read more

I stopped in the Rapscallion while waiting for my son to get off work and what a find!! Small local pub unassuming but what an amazing local pub! The atmosphere was old school, the kind of place you meet your friends and have a good laughs over some amazing local microbrews and great food. I had some smoked wings and they were perhaps the best wings I have ever had! A must try. The pretzels are fresh and so good. Service was excellent and its really a place everybody will know your name. I can go on but to cut it short. I recommend Rapscallions for great comfort food and a very cozy environment.
