I stopped by with a friend for coffee on a Saturday morning and although it wasn't anything too exceptional, we had a perfectly good experience here. When I came in at 10:30 on a Saturday, and there was plenty of seating available, mostly inside but also a few tables outside. We ordered at the counter and I got a pastry and an Americano with hazelnut syrup. The pastry they served right there and the drinks were prepared at the other end of the counter. I waited about 5 minutes for my Americano and when it came it was with a different syrup than the one I had ordered. The barista said they were out of that syrup, but I was a little annoyed that they didn't just ask me what I wanted instead - I was standing right there after all. But that is my one small complaint. The barista was nice about remaking it with the replacement syrup of my choice so it wasn't a huge deal. To eat, I got the peach danish. It was very yummy! It didn't taste exactly freshly baked so I can't give five stars but it was still nicely crisp and buttery with a good amount of filling. My friend is gluten-free and unfortunately there weren't a lot of options for her, but the raspberry square she got she said was very good. My Americano was also yummy and not too bitter. Just a note that by 10:30 the pastry case already had quite a few sold out items so that's something to keep in mind if you come later in the day for a sweet treat. In my opinion Maynard is lacking in cute cafes so I'm glad to know Boston Bean House is an option with decent food and drinks! I do want to come back to try their sandwiches too. read more

Sub par. Food is microwaved. Employees didn't seem super happy.. service is meh. Got a latte with skim milk and upon receiving it I could tell it was whole milk. I asked the barista (who seemed to be the manager) if it was skim milk and she goes "no I'm out of skim" and seemed annoyed that I even asked. If you are out of something that's fine, but kinda wild that they didn't think to tell us or ask what we would like instead. The latte was pretty much a cup of sweetened milk, so that was disappointing. Their regular ice coffee was not great either. I've been here before and usually have a good experience between the drinks and the food. Recently, I needed coffee on my way to work and wanted to shop local instead of shopping at a chain. I ordered a pickup through Doordash, but the ASAP option was not available, and the next pickup window wasn't for 30 minutes. I still placed the preorder for that pickup window, assuming that I could let them know I was there and my ticket would just join the line instead of me waiting to place my order.... Big mistake. The staff told me that it was scheduled, and I explained there was no ASAP option for this store today for some reason, but they still took everyone's orders in line *and made them* before even looking at my ticket. I feel like at the least it should've been put in the line of walk in orders when I arrived and asked if it could be moved up. I won't be ordering here again in this way. Either add an ASAP option to your Doordash, or don't make customers wait until everyone else has been served from walk ins before helping them, if you've already checked in the customer. The food is great and the drinks are good, this was just a bit disappointing. read more

It's about time that I reviewed Boston Bean House bc it's awesome! Maria and Lorraine (and the other amazing ladies and ppl in the back) were spot on with the quality of the breakfast quality and service. We arrived early on Easter morning before traveling, and I'm so glad that we did as it was freshly made and filled us up for a long car ride. We got the hungry man plate, Mexican burrito, blueberry muffin and beverages. I always order cappuccinos and they made it just right, strong with the right amount of foam. Delicious! we will be back very soon! Also, the price was not bad at all for this amazing breakfast for three. read more

Smoothies were delicious & can't really go wrong with a bagel, but with the the other breakfast sandwich and the burrito I was disappointed by the microwaved eggs...like seriously does it take too much to make fresh eggs? The switch would be tremendously respectable. Although I was craving a sweet, I could tell there wasn't much love in the production of baked goods-they looked store bought and highly processed. I really wish the ambiance was improved, more inviting and less stale. Wasn't too comfortable of a space. Where's the love? The ownership needs to put some spirit into this cafe. I've been going here for years on occasion, and I've been consistently underwhelmed. What got me to come back that first time is a solid sandwich and of course, the location- it's one of the only spots to grab breakfast now that Serendipity closed and the Bagel Table is engaged in some sort of radical guerilla marketing campaign of having a "Coming Soon" sign on it for almost two years now. So...here's the deal with BBH: 1. If you venture beyond regular coffee and get some sort of latte, you WILL be disappointed. It's watery and disgusting. They don't know how to make a latte at all and I actually dumped most of it out last time I went there. I dump lattes out about as frequently as I dump IPAs out, i.e. never. Something is wrong. 2. The sandwich I ordered today was the tuna panini. Instead of white chunk tuna which most of us secretly love every now and then, this appeared and smelled like it came out of an old can of Star Kist. Sad, wilted veggies and a limp tomato slice. I envisioned how Gordon Ramsey would sit them down after hours and make them cry for serving this to customers. "People could get sick!" he'd likely rant. Place needs a refresh. Could be a cool spot and instead it's just a placeholder until an inspired cafe/restaurant steps in. read more

This is the best place ever, under new ownership as of late fall 2019. Shoutout to the Boston Bean! The new owner is a wonderful person from Albania who is a great chef & speaks fluent Roman Italian. Of all the restaurants in town I have found them to be the cleanest and most sterile for those of you who are worrying about germs. Also the tables are nice and far apart! For artists or people who need to do their work in a café the light is beautiful with giant windows that go from ceiling to floor!! The food is better than ever now. Everything is okay, sandwiches are pretty good, but there is a sterile vibe that doesn't make it a place you want to linger, and one should always want to linger at a coffee house... also, it's a bit spendy, but I suppose you can afford to be when you're really the only game in town. I was on a short 15 minute break from work. I ordered soup, and the gentleman that helped me was (initially) nice. I waited and waited.. and realized I ordered soup, why is it taking so long? I inquired and he told me they were, "cooking it"... confused I realized it was in a microwave. I hate microwaves to start with, and if I wanted to microwaved soup, I would have just gone to CVS for a can. :) I inquired if they were cooking it in plastic. Read about it, it's not a good thing. I realize this happens in restaurants, but I know what to avoid having worked in a restaurants 1/3 of my life. The man and another employee told me "No". I explained I needed to leave, but decided to try to wait. The microwave beeped, and there was a lexan container in his hand and he tried to hide it as he went in the back. I was lied to and I think a good business shouldn't lie to their customers, however he did confirm that it was a lexan container when I asked for a refund. Lexan is commercial grade plastic. He wouldn't refund my credit card, he gave me cash. I used to go there all of the time - it seems to be under new management. 2 stars because 1 just isn't nice. I wish they were equally considerate. The food here is excellent but the coffee is very bitter from overly roasted beans. The cold brew is good but all the other coffee is mono-flavor bitter. Keep a dark roast bean for customers who like the more bitter side of the coffee flavor spectrum but IMO the rest could benefit from lighter roast, higher quality beans. read more

I really want to like this place, but the decor and seating is boring and uncomfortable (comfy chairs, a couple of sofas and a fancy electric fireplace would do wonders), I'm pretty sure the pastries are from Costco, and the coffee is weak. The "espresso" drinks, like cappuccinos, lattes etc. are expensive and not very full flavored. Likewise, while some of their food is good, it is not cheap and could be better. I wish they'd team up with one of the really good bagel places in the region, like in Hudson or Acton, and serve fresh bagels (at least on the weekends). Lots of potential, but I need to see the owners act on that potential before I'll be going back. read more

I want to love this place for a number of reasons. I really do. It is in my neighhborhood, and it is a locally-owned business. Their breakfast sandwiches are so tasty (despite the fact that they are microwaved). The coffee is good. The baked goods are well-made. But, here are the reasons I cannot love it and have just had to stop going back: 1. There is a $5.00 minimum on debit card purchases. Seriously, I am a repeat customer and have had to purchase a cookie for being $.50 short. Ridiculous. 2. The woman (owner I think) is just not nice. I have seen her complain about a customer right in front of me. She rolled her eyes regarding this customer's dietary restriction and mouthed to another employee that the customer was a "pain in the ass." I eat out, a lot, and I have never seen anything like that before. 3. The prices are just a little bit too expensive. 4. They stop arbitrarily stop serving breakfast at 11:00 during the week, and they once refused to make me a breakfast sandwich when I came in at 11:10. So disappointing. You can tell a lot about a cafe by the enthusiasm of their baristas. Sure, they're only employees but it's coffee - and caffeine (and caffeine dealers) are suppose to bring happiness to the masses. So based on what I think is a essential ingredient to a coffee place (staff with happy vibes), and my experience at Boston Bean House... this ain't my kinda place. Newly re-opened, Boston Bean makes yummy sandwiches, at least the two I've tried so far. Now, they have this whole 'rustic' thing going on, which I appreciate, so they need to use more traditional flatbread types... no subs or anything. But they could use larger loafs. I had the tomato & mozzarella today and it came on a 4x4" roll. Pretty small. They also charged me $7.75 for it - a little high for such a small sandwich. My friend got a wrap and it was huge and overflowing with stuff. That's a bit of a pisser too, when your sammy is a tiny cute little midget and your friend gets twice as much b/c he's a wrapper. They also have shitty pickles. I want to give it 3.5 but i can't. read more

We had a very nice lunch here on Saturday. I got the Mexican breakfast wrap, which contained eggs, spinach, tomatoes, feta and some sort of tangy/lemony dressing that I couldn't quite identify but gave it a great taste. Several hours after leaving, we discovered that a member of our party had forgotten a small cloth bag with important medications for treating a chronic illness. He carries it everywhere because he needs it a few times a day. By the time Saturday night we realized it was missing, the restaurant was closed and wouldn't be open again until Monday morning. We ended up calling the Maynard police to see if they could reach the owner to look for the bag and possibly bring it to the station. The owner(s) were kind enough to leave whatever they were doing on a Saturday night to search for it and deliver it and we got a call back from the police a short time later to pick it up. Good food + nice atmosphere + super kind owners = a great experience. read more

I've been coming here semi-frequently since they first opened - when I visit family in town, we have usually had our breakfasts here. The food is consistently good, though, as others have noted, the service has really gone downhill over the years. Staff can range from rote to inattentive, but on our latest visit, it was surly and disrespectful. When one is in a service industry and one takes an order incorrectly, the proper response to a customer is, regardless of the reason, "I'm sorry, let me get that for you right away". It's not good customer service to argue with my mother that she never placed her order. She did. We all heard her. I get that sometimes things happen, but you do not A. tell someone defensively "No you didn't" and B. roll your eyes and make a face when they walk away from you because perhaps a family member is watching and perturbed that their mother has just been treated poorly. I watched as the staff member at the counter literally picked a fight with my senior citizen mother over a sandwich, which was crazy because she was so polite to him. This really stressed her out and ruined our meal, at least for those of us who actually got our meal. This is pretty disappointing, especially for the business as my family lives close by, and did frequent this place. Those days are over, that's for sure. read more

Food = 3-4 stars, depending on the day. Ambiance = 3 stars; it's not bad, it's not great. It's just kinda humdrum. Service = 1 star. I have never received a "thank you," "good morning," or even a smile from ANY of the people working there. It's like their manager trained them to be surly. My fiance and I would probably come here more often if the people were even just a bit friendlier. As it is now, the only time we go is when Serendipity is closed -- at least the people there are friendly (and the food is delicious), albeit a tad slow. read more

Maybe I expect too much, but when a veggie wrap lists roasted red peppers as the first ingredient I anticipate plenty of roasted red peppers. Instead I received a wrap stuffed with copious amounts of romaine, cucumber, and carrots, then sprinkled with a measly 3 peppers throughout. It tasted fine, but I couldn't help but feel disappointed. I'll give this place the benefit of the doubt and a 3 star rating instead of 2. After all, the coffee was fine, they offered free wifi, and perhaps I just ordered the wrong thing. All I know is the next time I feel like dropping $10+ on a sandwich and medium coffee, I'll settle for the nearest Panera Bread. At least there you get bread or chips on the side. read more

I am not usually one for online reviews, but I have to toss my two cents in for the Boston Bean House. I have free coffee literally ten feet away from me at work, but I choose the Bean House. Eli the owner runs a fantastic show. The coffee is great. The food is great. The clam chowder is "heaven" says my coworker. (not a sea food guy myself, but I believe him) Oh and I can't forget the girls behind the counter, Sara and Hanna. They are awesome. The two of them are always very friendly and quick with smile even when it is busy. A good coffee shop needs a good dynamic of personality and homeyness. (and of course good coffee) The bean house has it. read more
