My son and I decided to give this place a try while in the city for a convention since it is right across from our hotel. The layout and decor of the place is nice and open with some fun Japanese accents throughout. The tables are spaced enough apart that you aren't on top of other guests. The host took a little while to greet us, but was very friendly and attentive once she came over. Our server Bernie also took quite awhile to get to us, but we were ready to order everything once he showed up. The good - the food was excellent! We got the Friday Night sushi roll, shishito peppers, miso soup, and the glazed salmon. The other servers for the other tables were very attentive even to the tables assigned to our server. The bad - our server was not attentive at all! I understand the team dynamic when working in a restaurant, but our server was practically non-existent to us and his other tables. The other servers took great care of everyone around us, and they brought us our food and did refills. We saw our server maybe three times. We sat there for a very long time after finishing our meal, and another server actually came to check in with us finally. We let her know we were ready and needed a box. About 10 minutes or more after that even our server finally shows back up to ask if we need anything. Where was he the entire time we were there? Anyway, he finally brings the bill and promptly runs my card. If you come here, come for the good food and pack your extra patience pants if Bernie is your server. The Black Ship Little Katana is right in Downtown Dallas and is a great option if you're staying at the Omni or visiting in the area. It's also right by the convention center + reunion tower. They offer asian fusion here and their menu consists of sushi, bibimbap, ramen, beers/sake. I think that the prices are okay, not that expensive BUT the portion sizes could be better. Maki rolls are on the smaller size. For rolls, I enjoyed de geisha & the spicy crab makis. Typically, I don't get dessert but when I saw mango cheesecake on the menu, I had to get it! I'm a lover of cheesecake and it didn't disappoint. Probably my favorite of all the dishes we ordered. read more

Wanted something light after a long day at a conference. Across from the convention center, this little place serves sushi, bibimbap, pho, and steaks. Right across the street from the Omni and super fast, they recommended the Steak and the tuna roll although most were eating pho or bibimbap when we came in. At 8pm i got the last chicken pho. The broth was so complex and warm and welcoming. Combined that with a Chinese five spice old fashioned and sat back with my colleagues and unwound from the day's meeting. I've been staying at the Omni for 5 days and had dinner at Black ship 4 out of the 5- the first I didn't know any better. The food is amazing, the staff is ridiculously friendly and attentive and I have not been disappointed with a single meal. I don't even like raw fish (never have) and the staff recommended the yellow tail and secret sushi plate from chef Luis called the Friday night lights roll- I ate every bite. Everyone from the hostesses, bartenders, waitresses and chefs have been amazing. I even heard they may be adding Texas WAGYU to the menu which would be even more amazing. I've really enjoyed dining here, next to the Omni! Bonus they're right next to the neon Pegasus for photo opt! Thank you, chef Luis, Melissa, Sheiwei, Abby and Roxy for the great service and food. Taste of Food is average but doesn't worth the price for the size, especially Bibimbap and roman. Service is terrible. They let us stand at the door to wait for 15 mins in hot weather while half of the tables were not seated. And most of those tables were kept empty in the next 2 hours. There seems to be under stuff. While the food all tasted good, everything is definitely NOT bigger in Texas when it comes to the portions at BSLK, but the prices should have been a tip off. Sushi rolls ranged from $12-$14, but a standard small bowl of edamame was $8?!? Our group was staying at the Omni and this was a convenient location, just steps away from the front lobby. Reservations were made Sat for our group of 12, 6:45 Sunday evening. When we arrived they had not yet started setting up the table. We waited about 30 minutes for an unbusy, understaffed restaurant. There were even comments about the sushi chefs standing around with little to do. Once seated, it took a while longer for water to come out and at that point we were not interested in cocktails or "starters", just HUNGRY. So our lead said just bring enough edamame for the whole table, as water started to get poured, for each person, going glass by glass from one pitcher of water. Of course that one pitcher didn't make it through, so half the table waited even longer for their water. By the time the water was done and the edamame arrived we were decided on our orders. The server, I believe her name was Shay, was very nice and patient, moving from person to person and getting orders down. To THAT end, I don't believe there was any confusion, or wrong orders, but an additional plate of spicy tuna roll was seen and shared because we were not about to send any plates back. Personally, I ordered the Katana Salad with shrimp($18) and a spicy crab roll($12). Again, all tasted good, but the salad was a "side" size 1/8 cut wedge of iceberg lettuce, with some frisée, a couple of leafs of butter lettuce, 3 1/4 tomato wedges, about 3 sprouts & 4 med grilled tail-on shrimp. I was told the ginger dressing was 'tossed into the salad', but I could opt for on the side. I said 'tossed is fine' and received about 1 TBS of dressing drizzled over the entire plate. All of the rolls were the smallest I've ever seen - adorable, really. The two diners who chose bibimbap laughed at the amount of rice in their bowls. When Asians think it's too much rice, you KNOW it was! lol - Probably about 2 1/2C in each bowl, which was then shared around because it was too much for them to eat. A tuna tower was also shared, as was a plate of goyza, and the 3 dessert plates brought out. But no one felt full by the time we were done eating. Left on the table was about 5 pcs of a "Philly" roll, completely unappetizing, even to the person who ordered it. It then took another 15 minutes for the bill to arrive, which sat with a credit card waiting to process another 15 minutes, until the server was flagged over. Our waters were filled 2 more times, during the meal, and offered again once the bill was paid, which was nice, so there's that. One person at dinner said it wasn't much better with just 2 people the night before when she was there. Cute decor, and staff is friendly, but the timing on service - especially with a 30hour advance notice - and small portions account for the 2 stars. It would've been nice to enjoy cocktails, but the wait and slow pace just made us hungry. Really, BSLK was nothing special. I ate with the group as a social gathering with colleagues, but sushi in Texas would NOT be my choice over Texas BBQ and I won't be eating at Katana again when back for another conference and staying at the Omni. Our waitress kept asking what I want and when I said a list of your nigiri or specialty rolls, she didn't know what nigiri was. No Salmon Roe, Uni, crunchy clam, fatty tuna - any other sushi restaurants would have had at least one of those. She said they weren't "in season" - stupid answer. Been getting Salmon Roe, uni and fatty tuna year round in Oklahoma for years. Don't look on old menus online, the current menu only has 6-8 basic rolls and 1 nigiri plate with 3 basic fishes. Didn't get the stone bowl, maybe that's what people go there for now - NOT THE SUSHI. The only think I ate was their thin rainbow roll with thin pieces of fish on top. I can get better/bigger rolls other places, like Whole Food Market! Oh one last thing - they DON'T have soy sauce. ONE OF THE BEST DINING EXPERIENCES OF MY LIFE. Angel is one of the best that I have ever seen in the customer service industry. He was an absolute delight to be around, we so enjoyed his conversion and hospitality. We had gyoza dumplings, sushi, and a complimentary little stuffed bun. The BEST THING ON THE MENU are the hot stone rice bowls - which are a traditional korean dish called bibimbap. You can do veggie, shrimp, chicken or beef, I had the beef with all of the veggies mixed in. Angel brought it out and basically cooked it all up right in front of me including the egg. The bowl is scorching hot so be careful. By the time you reach the bottom of the bowl the remaining rice is crispy and delicious. I am salivating just writing this review now. We ended the meal with some matcha mochi ice cream and some port. What an incredible dining experience. I cannot wait to come back to Dallas just to eat here again. HIGHLY RECOMMEND. read more

The Katana 101, recommended by my server as his favorite was in fact delicious. While the menu listed it as spicy, it was not, at all spicy. It's full of textures and multiple sea creatures and was visually very appealing. The Cajun was also listed as spicy, and it was also not spicy. That said, it was also delicious and I really enjoyed the creative use of crawfish. The wasabi? Oddly bland and flavorless... The Toro? While the fish was of high quality, it was poorly prepared. Based on the angle of the cut, there were veins of toughness in the muscle that made it difficult to chew even though the flesh itself melted in your mouth. I noticed another person at the table had his Toro cubed while mine was sliced. I think the different chefs in the kitchen need to get on the same page as far as Toro prep goes... With all that said, the service was ridiculously bad, and I don't blame our waiter. He was actually awesome and really concerned that we had a good time. Problem is, the kitchen refused to serve up the food per person's order and instead pushes things out family style and in phases. That may be fine if two or three people are eating together, but when you're at a table of eight, and you've put a huge order in, that can be very difficult to work with. We asked our server to send things back to the kitchen, which was just feet away from me, and he told us the chefs refuse to plate things for individuals. We told him it was unacceptable, and he ended up having to go back into the kitchen, put on gloves, and replate everything himself. All the while completely frazzled, understandably so. We REALLY appreciated the effort, and he's the reason this place is getting any stars at all. The stubborn kitchen, plus the poor preperation of their most expensive fish on the menu, PLUS the fact our simple drink orders came in incredibly slow from the bar makes this place a pass in my book. We stay at the Omni all the time, and I'm bummed the closest Sushi is a disappoint, even if at times it was truly delicious. That said, I enjoyed the atmosphere and catching up with my colleagues. I found the food here to be just average, except for the wagyu beef on a hot rock - that was delicious! It was juicy and succulent. I give it a 4/5. The gyoza was okay - 3/5. I ordered an assortment of sushi, and I didn't think they were melt-in-your-mouth good - 3/5. I also ordered the dumpling soup. It was basically gyoza placed in miso soup. Not flavorful at all - 2/5. My girlfriend ordered a new york strip for the entree. That was decent - 3/5. Although I felt the steak could have been marinated a lot more for better taste. Overall, the experience was luckluster. I've been to this particular location 3x (and their original uptown location once) and the service seems to be consistently iffy at the Lamar location. 5 stars: Steven who must've sensed our hunger at the bar as we ordered a drink after waiting 30+ minutes for a table on a pretty quiet Saturday night. Steven introduced himself as the manager and approached us with a tempura appetizer on the house to apologize for the wait - I am so appreciative of these types of gestures and you could tell he was sincere. Shortly thereafter we were finally sat, but it certainly made us feel welcomed. Also deserving of five stars is the hot stone dish which is NEVER a disappointment. This is such a great item to order in groups or even on a date for two. I saw they offer it on their lunch menu as well. Don't be scared by the hot sauce -- I'm a wimp and I've realized it adds great flavor rather than actually making the dish spicy. It comes with all sorts of veggies, rice, your choice of protein and a sunny egg on top - all of which cooks as iin the hot stone on your table. If you like soft rice you can eat it right away or you can let it cook and end up with crispy "fried" rice. Because it's cooking at the table it maintains its heat and freshness - so tasty! 3 stars: the service. After three visits I can confidently say they tend to understaff the restaurant. I can't blame them because it's more of a tourist-driven center and it can be quiet at times, but having only one bartender staff the entire cocktail area on a Saturday night isn't enough manpower. When we arrived this most recent visit the hostess seemed very unwelcoming. She mentioned a 15 min wait (which ended up taking 30-45 min) so we asked about sitting at the bar because the cocktail area was empty. She told us we shouldn't bother because it would take at least 15-20 minutes anyway since there's only one bartender to serve the entire area - so we decided to wait. Saw this place across the street from my hotel. Had a hankering for sushi, so I tried it out. Was greeted warmly by the hostess and promptly seated at the sushi bar (around 6:00pm). The wait staff was very engaging and my beverage from the bar came quickly. The sushi was delicious and fresh, so good in fact I ordered two rolls. So hungry, I'd eat the food raw! As someone who has made many a successful visit to the original Little Katana location on Travis Street (which recently moved) I was anxious to see how the new one compared. Black Ship did not disappoint. My initial visit was unplanned and happened on a Saturday evening shortly after they opened for dinner. I was walking in the area and remembered this place had opened. I walked up and was seated immediately. I opted for a seat in the bar area so I could watch some of the sports on one of the several TVs available. This location is much more spacious than the Travis Street location. That said, it is as warm and energetic which makes for a very nice vibe. The staff was very friendly and did a great job of being present just enough to ensure water glasses and other beverages were not empty. Mostly importantly, the food matches the Travis Street location in both freshness and flavor. Many of the same entrees are available at Black Ship. As always I went with the Ahi Tower (Spicy Tuna), a couple of rolls (Angel Roll & Katana 101) and some sautéed spinach. Needless to say, upon finishing all of that i left as a very happy (and full) customer. Another thing to make note of: Black Ship is actually located in space outside of the Omni. The server mentioned things have been a little slow as many people think Black Ship is actually located inside the Omni Hotel. It is NOT. Lastly, because it is downtown, plan accordingly for parking. There is metered street parking available (within1-2 blocks). Also the Omni has parking available (for a fee). This is a reasonable priced place at the Omni Hotel. There is a pretty good happy hour as well. Edamame is $2.5-regularly $5, good beer/wine/cocktail options, and even great sushi deals. I had the spicy chicken soup which had so much flavor but wasn't overly spicy. For my entree I had the seared ahi tuna-fantastic!!! Cooked perfectly! The staff was nice-quiet but knowledgeable. Since we were staying at the Omni and we enjoy sushi, my wife and I thought that this was a perfect option for dinner for our first night in Dallas. We sat at the bar and the bartender was great. Really nice guy, told us all about Happy Hour, gave us several tastes of wines and in general, really made the experience fantastic at the outset. The highlights for us were the Shrimp Shumai and the Snow Mountain Roll although everything was quite good. What we liked was the freshness and the temperature of the rolls because warm sushi is never a good thing and cold dishes that are supposed to be warm are just as bad. Seeing as the next day was our nations birthday, I decided to partake in not one, but 3 bottles of delicious hot sake.. which led to me getting absolutely f*cking schnockered! I've eaten here twice now and this place does not disappoint. My coworkers and I came here recently for my birthday lunch. Almost everyone at the table got the hot stone bowl. One of us is on the keto diet and couldn't have the rice. They accommodated and gave him extra vegetables which I thought was really nice. I also got the dumpling soup which was literal perfection. They seemed overwhelmed, even though they weren't that many people, but there was a conference happening at Omni which can make business unpredictable, and things were still served in a timely manner so no complaints here.
