I tried this place after a Yelp suggestion. It was overpriced for what it was. The burger was tasty, but just not for the price. If I am going to grab an expensive made to order burger to go, I would choose five guys. I definitely would stick with the burgers over the chicken. The chicken lacked flavor. That's why I was so disappointed on one of my recent trips there when the milkshake I took home one night had a large chunk of plastic in it. This had never happened in my previous couple of visits to Black Sheep, so I knew it was not the norm. I found a phone number on their website and reached out to Mike, who must be the owner or manager of the location. He was concerned about my experience and immediately made things right by comping me a free meal on my next visit. Darn good, but not perfect. Patties are a bit thick for a smash, so no lattice and not much Maillard reaction. Flavors are good, but my bacon wasn't crispy. Tried the cheese curds too. Fries were ok, probably should have gotten chilli instead of pulled pork on the loaded fries. Elvis milkshake was good, but needed more banana. Place was crowded but luckily there was one lone table available for seating when we arrived. Great! We only need the one table. The burgers were good. I had the one with blue cheese which is my standard order in specialty burger joints and it was juicy and I did not waste any, no. I've had better burgers, but in places like Atlanta, and St. Louis, and even in Flat Creek but I don't recommend you go out into the night to find them. Most people I saw were eating the burger with a helping of beef brisket piled on top of it and for whatever reason, I don't like burgers that also have other meats piled on top of them. Note: bacon doesn't count. Bacon is not a 'meat' as much as it is a 'life's complement'. Bacon does improve anything and everything. But no, keep your brisket and gyro meat and pulled pork and deep fried chicken patties off of my burger, thank you. No, today we're here to talk truffle fries and milkshakes made with Russell's bourbon. Fries do not come with the burgers; they are an extra. This is because their fries are worthy of their own consideration. And, no matter what else you are eating at Black Sheep, even the burgers with the extra meat piled on them, order truffle fries. Unless you are medically certain you are allergic to truffle, or garlic, order the truffle fries. It is required. Finally, I mentioned bourbon milkshakes. They have a good bourbon selection and if you've never had it in a milkshake, you aren't living the very best life you can be living. Two weeks later and I am still tasting it. YUM! As a visitor to Springfield, I hadn't heard of Black Sheep and therefore didn't have very high expectations. We went to the downtown location and ordered our food to go. The burgers and the french fries were incredible! Service was great: while waiting for our food to go, we were asked by multiple people if we had been helped yet. We had a great meal here!! Our service was good, the fries were amazing, and I actually really enjoyed the salad the most of all I ordered, but that's just because it hit the spot for my mood. Our tiny table in the middle of the walkway left a lot to be desired, we got bumped into a lot and it was just too close to everyone walking by. The Burger: Wagyu and filet double patties...chopped bacon and sweet red peppers...with a smoked garlic aioli....then, The Fries: (my lawd)...tossed in parsley truffle oil and garlic then sprinkled with parmesan cheese...(ham mercy!). It just don't make sense. And finally, The Milkshakes: Liv had The Purple Haze (has blackberry cobbler IN the milkshake) and I had The Elvis Presley ( banana, peanut butter, and chocolate). We ordered cheese curds (without the habanero), two Don't Go Bacon My Heart burgers and a Chicken Bijan with the apple and hickory smoked fries and it was all delicious! What a great find! I am traveling for work so had limited time to explore the local food favorites. After reading about this place, I just had to try it and I'm so glad I did! All of the staff did an amazing job. Our server Austin was great- he made recommendations and they didn't disappoint. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. The burger is one of the best I have ever had. I am picky about burgers so I was a bit nervous but it did not disappoint! I loved the smoked fries (unique and delicious!) and the cheese curds.
