I frequently come out to Utah for school and this place had been on my must try place . I had never had Native American food so this place defentily piqued my interest . We came on a Saturday night and got seated right away . The waitress explained the menu and for drinks I decided on the Catus pear mule and for food I got the beef Navajo flatbread with rice and beans . After we placed our order the drink came out pretty quickly . Overall the drink was good no real complaints there . The food is to me was just okay . I felt like it could have used more flavor. Overall the service was good and the waitress made sure to check on us pretty frequently .
Had lunch with a few colleagues at Black Sheep Café while in Provo. We stopped in on a Saturday around 12:30 PM. The restaurant was fairly busy, and despite not having reservations, we were seated immediately. I started with the Yanabah iced tea ($5), a Navajo herbal tea. It was light, refreshing, and not overly herbal. We shared a wedge salad to start, which came with a chipotle mayo dressing that was excellent. It had more heat than the chipotle flavors I am typically used to, and I really enjoyed the extra kick. For my entrée, I ordered the Navajo taco with BBQ pork ($15)? which was outstanding. The taco is served on freshly made fry bread that was fluffy, slightly sweet, and had subtle honey notes. It was piled with a generous portion of perfectly cooked pulled pork coated in a sweet glaze, along with some fresh vegetables and herbs that added both crunch and more flavor, with chipotle sauce on the side. The fry bread was fresh and flavorful, the pork was tender, and the combination of herbs, vegetables, and sauce created a great balance of sweet, savory, and spicy flavors. Black Sheep Café offers a unique menu inspired by Native American and Southwestern flavors, and I wish I had more time to come back and try more of the menu. If you're in Provo, I highly recommend.
The service was good and the vibe was good! The food wasn't my favorite. The navajo tacos were cool to try but I wish the bread was crispy. Other than that it's a nice establishment. The fries were probably the best thing I ate.
I tried to cater this for a private event but after 10+ business days of trying I went with another company. The contact information on BYU's website is outdated and when they connected me with the proper person they responded so sporadically. After quickly responding to their messages they stopped responding and a week later replied. Me and my colleagues did stop by for lunch because I did want to enjoy a local business and try that lavender honey flatbread. It was good. We shared we were limited on time and they said they'd be quick but unfortunately we had to take our food to go. The salads were good. The staff in the restaurant was very friendly.
Service was great! Our waitress had recommendations (none I was eyeing though) and gave us amble time to peruse the menu. Green Chili Goat Cheese Queso was amazing. Light & Creamy with good flavor. The chips it's served with are thicker and sturdy! (No breaking in the dip) I got the Red Chili Beef Taco- it's a stewed beef on their fry bread (which was very good). It was tasty. Not much heat, so if you like spicy that's not your plate! But over all good portion and great flavor. The beans are bland, so that was a slight disappointment. But overall it was a great environment for a delicious meal. Would go back and try some of their other options!
Black Sheep Cafe was awesome. We love fry bread! They have burgers on pretzel buns. I asked if they would do fry bread for the buns and they did. It was fantastic. Our server was really good. I want to try one of their Navajo Taco next time. Parking is hard to find in this area.
Wow! This was my first time having Native American food, and this is an experience I will never forget. Black Sheep Cafe has a fair share of regulars and new customers (from what I could overhear). I made a reservation through Yelp, arrived early and was able to be sat early. I found street parking easily out front on a Wednesday night. The frybread?? So good, I had to have it for appetizer and dessert. Think of a roll that is super light and fluffy, more on the croissant side but not flaky... Not the best description at all so u suggest you try it yourself. The hog jowl tacos were amazing. Hog jowl was described to me as a sweet pork. The meat reminded me so much of bacon; it was delicious and I regret not getting 2 orders. Between the tasty food and good service, this is a place I would visit again when in town.
This is such a warm place, with delightful service. Was looking for something unique and we got it. The fry bread, the nachos, the tacos, all amazing. They are definitely not what you may be used to if you're thinking Mexican style, because this is not that. You can go and feel the care put into everything from the service to the food.
Used an AI recommendation when passing through and was very happy with the results. Was told it was scratch made American Indian centered cuisine. Not something we've come across after!
Tasty! Definitely coming back. They were very accommodating. Some gluten free options could be made dairy free, but not an emphasis of theirs.
Lavender bread was awesome! I could eat it every day! The filet bruschetta was super good. The mash potatoes at the base snuck up on us, you almost don't notice until you notice them you want more! I got the fried chicken. Super filling and tasty, great crisp on the chicken and the gravy is bomb! The potatoes are nice and cheesy. So good! Overall, I will be back for sure.
It was a beautiful day we made a reservation for Mother's Day lunch. Everything was perfect, the ambiance that set the tone for an enjoyable meal. We were well taken care of.
This is a nicer restaurant in the Provo area and a great place to come with coworkers or friends & family! The navajo tacos are yummy (I just wish mine was fried a bit more for more crunch!) Overall it was very filling and loaded! The pork jowl nachos were especially yummy! Definitely come here if you're looking for a nice sit-down restaurant. The service was fairly quick and friendly too.

I got the g.o.a.t. Burger. Creamy goat cheese and fresh portobello mushrooms. Got the sweet potatoe fries. Well seasoned and crunch on the outside. Also tried the southwestern caprese salad. Delicious mozzarella cheese with peppers. Will definitely be coming back read more

Best food in Provo! A small and unique restaurant just off center street that offers modern "Native American" dishes that are all just to die for. 3 Recommendations 1) The Buffalo Nickel Burger might be the biggest burger around but is for sure the best burger around (if you like something more gourmet). 2) The Hog Jowl Tacos are also ridiculously good. A combination of sooo many flavors. Great for anybody who likes tacos or anybody who likes gourmet finger food! 3) Don't get the bruschetta as an appetizer, BUT if you do get a side- the sweet potato fries are heavenly. They are cut super thick and aren't crispy- kind of like a mix between fries and mashed potatoes- which you'll only understand once you try them and they are so so good! I've been here a few times and absolutely love it. The bruschetta is a great appetizer. I always love the chimichangas and the enchiladas but I've always heard the hog jowl is great. I also love the cactus lemonade. Go for your birthday and you get a chocolate mousse! The service is great and I've never had any problems. read more

Tami was the absolute best server. So patient and knowledgeable with my questions as this was my first time. I ordered veggie enchiladas with asparagus. A total custom order and they knocked it out of the park! So incredibly tasty!!! I'll def be back next time I'm in town! read more

Really fun fusion of creative Mexican food and authentic homemade ingredients. We shared an amazing nacho and then I ordered the Navajo taco with shredded beef and my husband fell in LOVE with the pesola soup - he gave it a 10 and said he'll be back for that! Very good. I was a little hesitant to try this place because . . . well, I'm not sure, actually. But I went for a business dinner, tried the hog jowl tacos, and was blown away by how good they are. Yes, in my ultimate cheapness I do admit that 19 bucks for two tacos and a very small portion of rice and beans is quite a dive for people like me (though I'll always fork over the money if the food is worth it), but I absolutely loved the layered flavors. The hog jowl, which is incredibly fatty, melted perfectly with the maple sauce and jimica. The rice was okay, the indian bread was fine, but the tacos were perfect. I don't think I've ever had those flavors before--melt-in-your-mouth pork, jalapeño, great sauce . . . totally worth it. Also, the place is has a nice ambiance. Totally date worthy. ummm... another one of those, WERE REALLY UNIQUE AND COOL AND WE OWN YOU MOTHER *******. I was going to give a 4 (this is like a 3.5 for me) until two people who came in to be seated were not helped for about 10 minutes and they left. I thought dub step TF. There was eye contact made with staff... but the two people were just ignored... they werent even that busy!! i mean... there were 3 two-seater tables available, and 3 four-seater tables available... and we waited 15 minutes to be seated. I am still so confused. (total of maybe 16 tables there?) Um the food was pretty good, a little less quality than price. I got the navajo taco for 13 dolares it was... good? (im ron burgundy?) it had a nice little taste dance in my mouth but i wasnt like I NEED MORE!! because i didnt. The green chili fries were the highlight of my experience. I don't know what it was... perhaps how easy it would be to prepare for myself at my house... but it was good. I wanted more so... extra points to BSC. The price of the 2 entrees, and fries was (with 18% tip) $44. So... i dont know... 44 dollars... do you know how many bdub wings that buys on tues and thurs???????? 73.3333 wings. THINK ABOUT THAT!!! THE VERDICT: Just another one of those hey... we have a weird menu... we are near center street... and we cost a lot of money... so bring your college debt with you and bring your date and hey lets have a good time!! For me, Black Sheep Cafe is a Godsend. Living in Provo Utah the selection of non-chain, high quality restaurants, is extremely limited. When someone asks me what are good restaurants in Provo, there are really only two that come to mind. Communal, and Black Sheep. I have tried every item on the menu at blacksheep over the last 4 or 5 times that I have been here. I can honestly say that every single menu item is delicious. My personal favorite - the filet with the cabernet reduction sauce served with a side of parmesan mashed potatoes that are to die for. IMPORTANT - if you are coming here for a quick bite, DO NOT COME HERE. I usually come here when I have an entire evening to spend on good food, and good company. In all of the times that I have been here (regardless of the night of the week) I have never been in an out in under 2 hours. Honestly, I think the hosting and waiting staff could step up their game a little bit. It is hit or miss - some of the staff are phenomenal but some just have no idea what is going on. This place gets super busy on fridays also, so try and get a reservation or you will not get in. The chimichanga is delicious, the fries starter, the navajo tacos, everything is good. My recommendation is order whatever you think looks best, because it doesn't matter. I have tried every dish and they are all very very very good. Don't forget to order a bottle of the cactus lemonade as well - very refreshing. Bottom Line - average service with incredible food. Come for the food and the experience, and plan on spending a while here. It isn't a bad thing, it's just the way it is. read more

Lets be honest, the name alone is what drew me to this Provo establishment. So much so, that we drove from Draper to check it out. Love a clever name, and love even more legit and well done flavors with a simple menu. Ordered the Black sheep salad to start .Organic greens with candied pecans and cranberries with cactus pear-pomegranate vinaigrette. Ummm....Absolutely! Add the spice dusted cotija and you've got a unique winner here. It was excellent For entrees it was a pork kind of night & we ordered the Posole and Green pork enchiladas. The Posole is large and truly a meal itself. There is a ton of tender pork in such a flavorful broth. If you are a fan of posole this was extremely authentic and legit. Green pork enchiladas were very flavorful and filling. Again the pork was tender and the flavors blended nicely. Beans fell flat for me, and rice was just OK. My friend ordered The Bishop cocktail and loved it. I couldn't help laughing that it's made with five wives vodka (they aren't missing a beat at black sheep). And this cactus thing they've got going on in their drinks and dressings is divine. The cactus lemonade is so tasty, and practically on every table as proof. Space is small, casual and cozy. Service was top notch. I'm bummed I didn't get the name of our server because he was excellent and had amazing suggestions. Oh, most of this menu can be made gluten free. A good 90% of it. This might be my new favorite restaurant. I was so impressed with the food and the open ambiance. First of all: expect to wait a bit longer for your food. Our server made sure that we were aware that they scratch-make everything in the kitchen, and they only make to order, so things might take a bit longer than normal. Totally cool. I appreciated the server letting us know. My only advice: if you know it's going to take a bit longer to serve us our food, be sure to be attentive while we wait. Our water glasses and sodas took a while to get refilled. Not a huge issue. But still. Also, our server got overwhelmed by a bridal shower or something towards the end of our meal, and we were pretty much ignored and had to get up and find a hostess to pay. The food here is creative, fresh, delicious, and still founded on Black Sheep's roots: Navajo cuisine. My wife's green chile navajo taco was the star of the show. The pork was ridiculously tender, and the chile had wonderful flavor. I had the pork chop sandwich, and it was fantastic as well. Instead of serving on standard bread, they serve it in their housemade flatbread. Kind of if a pita and a tortilla had a little too much to drink one night and.....you know....here comes lovechild. The sweet potato fries were very different than I was expecting, in a very good way. I'm used to restaurants using nuclear orange yams and calling them sweet potatoes. But Black Sheep uses actual sweet potatoes. These fries are cut thick and are either oven-baked or pan fried (or both), but they had a lovely consistency and flavor. A buddy had the burger, and it looked like an excellent choice as well. Also served on the pita/tortilla lovechild. If you live in Salt Lake, this place is definitely worth the drive down to Provo. Provo UT- This is probably my favorite restaurant. Everything I have had has been very good although I do prefer the dinner items to the lunch items. If you find yourself here for dinner you must try the Hog Jowl tacos. They are just amazing. The flavor is so rich and complex it's a delicious explosion in your mouth. Sadly they removed these from the lunch menu and sometimes they do sell out so if like us you are driving all the way down from Salt Lake make sure you get there early to ensure they will have them still! Other yumminess: We had a surf and turf special once when they were out of hog jowl tacos that was bison and shrimp and it was incredible. It made me forget that I was sad I couldn't get what I went in for. The other tacos are delicious but again mmm hog jowl. For lunch we really like the Pasole or the Green Chili. We've also had a combo of both on recommendation from our waiter and always with fry bread. Oh man the fry bread is so good. The soups are so filly it's a very hearty meal. We have had all the burgers and my favorite is the goat cheese one. The Blue burger is very good but VERY saucy. The Black Sheep burger was yummy enough but I probably would not order it again (the ingredients didn't stand out to me but the meat was very tasty). And last but not least the cactus pear lemonade is super delicious. It sounds strange but if you like a mild almost berry lemonade you'll enjoy this! If you find yourself with in driving distance do yourself a favor and go! ANd this does not impact my review but I like to know there is no changing table. read more

I would rate this place an A for effort, B for execution, and C (or even D) for service. We tried the goat burger (I loved it but my wife made a sour face when she tasted the goat cheese that was stuffed in the meat patty), the Navajo taco (pretty good but just average), and the pork chop sandwich (interesting but probably wouldn't try again). The sweet potato fries that came with the meals were different but not exactly in a good way. I liked the idea but they were soft and soggy. I prefer cripsy, thin sweet potato fries (go to Guru's a block away). First the food. I like the idea of trying unique dishes that you can't find at any restaurant (part of the reason I like Guru's just down the next block on Center St). Any time you see something like goat cheese on the menu, you know you're not at your typical restaurant. I also like how you take something simple like a burger and turn it into a new experience by adding unique flavors and putting it on pita bread instead of a bun. This is where the restaurant shines. The flavors are strong and unique. That's about where the good review ends. Price: about what I would expect from a restaurant offering something out of the ordinary, but I don't think it was worth it. Service: I should have read reviews before sitting down since we were short on time the night we ate at Black Sheep Cafe. We were quickly seated and handed menus but then it took several minutes after our drink order (water) to receive our drinks. Then it took another 10 minutes or so to take our order and another 15 minutes or more to receive our food. If you're not in a hurry and you want to try some unique food, then eat here. If you're in a hurry, don't even think about it. Then let's talk about our awkward waitress. When she would come to our table, we weren't sure if she wanted to talk or just listen to our conversation. She would hover and just wait until we would all stop talking and make eye contact with her. Then she would make strange comments and repeated back our order as if she were applying for a Hollywood acting position with Yoda. Not all the waiters were this strange, but she affected our meal in a negative way. There are so many unique and ethnic dining choices around this area in Provo that we probably won't choose to eat here again soon. I wouldn't be opposed to eating here if friends suggested it, but if I'm choosing where to eat I'll go somewhere else first. read more

We love Black Sheep. The food is AMAZING! However, they are always slow, so don't ever be in a rush. They are also really expensive, and so those two things are what caused me to take off a star. I do really love their food though. It is so divine. I've gotten their hog jowl tacos and they were so good. Black Sheep's chef really knows how to nail a sauce. The maple and bay leaf sauce on those tacos makes the dish, my only issue is that specific cut of meat is a little too fatty for me that I haven't wanted to get them again. The last time I went, I got the Buffalo Nickel burger and it was stupendous. Like, it literally left me stupefied as I wanted to let go of the pain of being full and eat that entire burger because it was so good. Again, Black Sheep and their sauces - the Cabernet reduction on that burger is what takes it to the level of perfection that it is. Everyone needs to go to Black Sheep at least once in their life. I promise you won't regret it. Oh and P.S. You HAVE to try the hibiscus cactus lemonade! It is perfection! I don't know how they figure out exactly what flavors to mix together but this lemonade is the perfect blend of flavors and I have to stop writing about it now because I am craving it so much. read more
