Masala Dosa
Mai H.

I was in the area and delighted to enjoy lunch at Black Pepper Lounge. The menu intrigued me how it's very specific to Kerala, a place in southern India, not just some restaurant having a generic Indian menu. I've been craving dosa for a while. The last time I had dosa was at Art of Dosa at the Sterling Food Hall in Chicago back when it was called Revival Food Hall. This masala dosa delivered. I also had a Kerala parotta. The flaky crispy chewy texture was so fun and I used it to finish off all the delicious masala stuff so I didn't waste a drop. I'm fine with the portions not being ridiculously large because I was happy to save room for dessert- Achappum Crumble- just what I needed for my sweet tooth. The toasted coconut with ice cream and butterscotch was a winning combination.

Outstanding! Not the ubiquitous American-Indian typical of the burbs. We loved it. I don't remember the name, but try the fish that's baked in banana leaf (picture included)

The owner of the restaurant is friendly and was very helpful in recommendations. The space is big. This is a place for authentic Kerala food, but some of which do not suit my taste. Most of the food is prepared after you place an order. So it may take some time if the place is super busy, but it will be fresh. We did not have that issue as v went on the time of opening on cold day, so there was not much crowd. Drinks- old fashioned was good, but the lime soda was flat and not tasty. Apps - Ulli vada first time trying was really good. Soft and different than onion pakora. Mushroom pepper has a good quantity of Kerla black pepper. Main- kerala paratta was really good, soft, and warm. The egg curry was good, too. The masala dosa was ok, and the chutney was blend. The smabhar had more imali sourness than I could handle.

"The" place you go for South Indian Kerala cuisines. We had BDF, BPL Special Chicken Biryani, Pothichoru (a traditional lunch pack with rice, fish and several sides), Kerala Parotta,, Palappam and Egg Roast. The dishes had authentic flavors and taste. The service was fantastic, very attentive to our needs, very high quality food (the biryani came with a hard boiled egg, pappadam, achar and onion-yogurt salad) and the order was accurate. Love the decor and bar lounge... honestly we were beyond satisfied. We had to get a couple pothichoru to go too...

Wow! Came in on 11/26/23 about an hour before close. Greeted with warm and friendly faces. They did a thorough job of explaining all the vegan options for me. I went with the Kothu parotta- veg! They also provided me with a complimentary snack as I waited for my meal, so sweet and kind. I was pleasantly stuck with the most amazing aroma and flavors. I wish I had been more hungry or I would have gotten a small bite. But I 100% recommend. Will be back shortly and will be bringing friends and family:) For those foreign to eexperiencing Indian cuisine- I DARE you to step out of your comfort zone and try Black Pepper Lounge! You'll be struck with excellent flavors and undoubtedly have a pleasant experience!

We just tried this new Kerala cuisine restaurant and was fantastic. Growing up on Kerala (South Indian) food it is rare to find an Indian restaurant that caters to this cuisine. Everything we had was very authentic and by far the best we had in the area! It will be different than what most people think about Indian Food, but absolutely something to try! The service was also great, with good ambiance!

We tried several things, including the beet salad, which was absolutely delicious. The spicy feta dip was also really good, and the dip platter was great for sharing. The steak shish kebab was tender, but the flavor was a little bland and could have used more seasoning. Would definitely come back to try other dishes.

Mediterranean cusine is definitely one of our favorite ones and all the flavors are there. We mosly tried the mezze hot and cold dishes to share and a bottle of nice Sancerre wine. House Sampler-you can try all three spreads at one plate, all were very good but the Muhammara definitely stood up as the best. Olives--very well seasoned, we always try olives and definitely a must. Lamb Chops--perfectly seared, served with fantastic slaw and chimichuri. Falafel--was good, classic, could be a little bit more moist in our opinion. Special: Hamachi crudo with Mango sauce--this was a spectacular dish, one of the best we lately had. Fish was fresh and the presentation was amazing. Thanks to Alex for being a great server and we will definitely try more dishes from Mosaic Kitchen in the future!

We were greeted by Ian our server immediately which was very nice. We noticed they have Happy Hour Tues-Fri from 4-6pm so we took advantage of their half off cocktails and a few food specials. I had the Wisconsin Old Fashion and my wife had the Poli Old Fashion which was tequila based. Both were fantastic! We started with an order of their Street Corn Deviled Eggs which were amazing..super creamy. They do have a GF menu so my wife had a bowl of their homemade chili and I had their Italian Beef Bao trio. Both were delicious and very meaty. They have an extension whiskey/bourbon list plus their burgers looked amazing. We will definitely be back!

Happy Hour menu is available Tuesday through Friday from 4pm to 6pm so we took advantage of the half priced drinks and food. I had a cocktail called Poli Old Fashioned which is made with tequila, mezcal and agave bitters. The waiter explained that Poli is the name of their chef. I love a smokey cocktail so I really enjoyed it. The street corn deviled eggs were creamy and not at all spicy. My husband really enjoyed the trio of Italian Beef Bao. We also tried the Chili which was very meaty and served piping hot. The patrons seem to be mostly local regulars and it was busy. There were even people eating at the rail table outside since we are enjoying temps in the 60's on a November evening. We will definitely return to sample the burgers.

On my…read morevisit here, I had the opportunity to try two dishes off the shareables menu and was super impressed with both of them. Service was also quick and friendly throughout the entire meal. The Birria egg rolls were a bit on the smaller side but made a big impression with its preparation. I've never had birria wrapped in anything as crispy as the wonton wrapper this was wrapped in. The birria was flavorful while being tender and not being too salty. The white cheddar and chihuahua cheese added a small amount of extra saltiness and a bit more fat, which matched well with the chipotle aiola. The duck poutine was incredibly flavorful, while sitting on the edge of potentially being too bold. The fries were incredibly crispy though there was quite a bit of gravy on the dish and the white cheddar cheese curds did a great job of keeping the entire dish hot throughout the meal, while adding a little bit of extra flavor. The bacon and onion added some umami though it almost made the dish a bit too salty and the duck confit added a nice protein element. Overall a little pricey, but given the more unique menu and quality of both the flavors and textures, it's worth the premium. The food here is definitely memorable and in line with excellent options available in Geneva.

The room is inviting and cozy, and the service was excellent. They bill themselves as a sort of supper club and I think that it fits them pretty well. They have a nice drink menu with a creative bar. We started with some good Wisconsin (Brandy) Old fashions sweet and the relish tray. We would go back just for that relish tray, it was awesome, and looking around it's very popular. Gherkins, bread & butter pickles, mustard, summer sausage, cheese. olives crackers, toasts, crab salad, horseradish cheese spread and another spread like a rillettes. It was so good, we could not have enjoyed it more. The relish tray was so good we decided that we wanted something smaller for dinner. My wife got a wonderful steak salad with artichokes, asparagus, radishes, and parmesan with horseradish dressing. The steak was perfectly cooked and very tender and flavorful. I got the sausage and peppers, which didn't end up being very small, 2 large sausages with braised peppers and homemade giardiniera. It was very very good, everything was perfectly cooked and delicious. We had an amazing meal and even though we were full, we found a little room for just the most perfect pot de crème. We got a dessert too, but after 4 glasses of wine, I'm not sure what it was anymore. It was good as well. It was kind of hard to hear the presenters speak, because even though we were in a private room, it was pretty loud from the outer room of the restaurant. My wife liked her salmon but wished it came with a potato or rice.
