The place is designed to be casual and chill. The service has always been pretty good, attentive and helpful! The food! My favorite thing to get has always been the dry rub ribs and dry rub chicken wings! I love their dry rub seasoning, it is a bit on the sweater side but is always a solid choice! We just finished an early dinner here. We ordered the Triple special (3 ribs, 2 pieces of chicken, cornbread, 2 sides, and 1 choice of BBQ meat) and a cheeseburger. The 3 sides were fries, sweet potatoes with brown sugar, and pinto beans with rice. They were fairly good. As for the meat, I thought the ribs, smoked ribs, and chicken thigh were juicy and delicious! These three meats are worth a second (if not a third) visit! The cheeseburger was okay. The chicken breast was, unfortunately, forgettable. The spices on the chicken thigh and breast were superb. Always amazing. This is the only actual wood smoked BBQ I've found in the area and it's consistently fantastic. Stopped in for lunch and picked up a pound of pork shoulder for dinner. We stopped by for the Valentine's Day special for two. It was AMAZING good! We each got a cup of gumbo, 4 bone ribs and a side. The gumbo was not too thick and had a lovely smoky, slightly spicy flavor. The ribs were absolutely perfect! Sides were delicious! Greetings, this was one of the more terrible dining experiences I've experienced in 2026. The racist behavior of the staff was settle at first but progressively got throughout the service. All of our services were delayed and my food came out cold. I had my children with me and literally felt unsafe to complain do to the environment. Food: (4/5): Smoked pork shoulder - This was amazing - really tender with lots of pepper. Brisket- a bit fatty and not as moist as I would've liked. Dry Ribs: I have never had these before and they were delicious! I love ribs but hate all the sauce that overwhelms the flavor. Next time I will order these! Sides: Mac and cheese - Meh, a bit bland but was really great with the pulled pork! Throw some bacon and green onions on that and call it a day! Sweet potatoes- So yummy - more like Thanksgiving caramelized yams - they were baked with lots of brown sugar and spices! Service (5/5): Liam was really kind. I would say a hit or a miss. Pretty good food, but very expensive now. It's definitely not the best BBQ around here and they don't do anything that makes the food taste unique or special. The meat is good and does taste smoked. I got the brisket which did taste good. I also do like the variety of bbq sauce options. The Mac & Cheese taste like a boxed one not homemade. Tuesdays are buy one get the second half off for the rack of ribs. Been here at this location over a dozen times and they are always consistently good as far as the food provided - so flavorful! They have dry rub wings, my favorite non dry rub wings are the mustard (tangy). The dry rub and sauces are literally finger licking good. The bacon burger is charbroiled crisp on the outside and juicy on the inside. How they place the items on the plate are also done w perfect care! The venue isn't anything fancy paper towel rolls on each table with a tray of extra sauces you can sample. The pictures speak for themselves. When you choose to visit a BBQ establishment, you most likely chose the restaurant because you craved BBQ. Unfortunately, the 2-times my husband and I chose Black Hog, they were out of the pork BBQ, which is very strange indeed. The atmosphere wasn't very inviting to me. Moreover, the alternative dish I chose was mediocre at best as the sauce tasted more like vinegar. We ate ribs (Arkansas style), brisket, baked beans, fries, and gumbo. Who knew Frederick, Maryland was serving up some gumbo that would make you rethink your life choices??....that was some tasty, flavorful (with just enough spice kick) gumbo..highly recommend for an appetizer. Everything we ate was good, so you can't go wrong with choosing anything on the menu. The place is small, and has a country low key feel to it...very homely...and the food taste homemade. Fun fact about their desserts: so they offer up a couple of choices, and on our particular visit, all the options were pies. They get their pies (and other desserts) from the same pastry chef that caters The Tasting Room in downtown Frederick. They had banana cream, peanut butter, chocolate mousse, and coca cola chocolate pie. We had the peanut butter pie, which had a chocolate graham crust, peanut butter filling that was whipped to a less than dense cheesecake texture, and topped with whip cream. COVID-19 dining experience: We had just finished hiking Sugarloaf Mountain. Seeing this bbq gem not too far post-our hike was well needed. We chose to eat inside and staff were friendly and got us seated right away. You have to order the bbq pork fries. Sumptuous pieces of shredded pork top crispy fries. The ribs with a dry rub are a good way to try their smoked meats. The restaurant has bbq sauce a la carte on the table. The wife got their Brisket Salad and did not feel it was quite enough to satisfy. The salad needed some green peppers, carrots, celery, red cabbage or something more for sure. Urbana, or Ijamsville -- depending on what map you look at -- is not exactly a nearby suburb of the DC area, and its rather far from both my work routes and house. Black Hog is worth the trip. I'll stop by whenever I'm in the area, and the BBQ is always great. My last visit was a Carolina style bbq pork sandwich. This is where a lot of BBQ places fall down: Carolina style is incredibly different, and most places do either regular bbq or Carolina style well, but not both. Black Hog nails the vinegary sauce. I've had their ribs several times, too, which I get Kansas City style, covered in sauce. The sauce is not too sweet, but rich and smokey, and deliciously compliments the ribs. Definitely try their gumbo, too. Its hard to find good gumbo, and Black Hog absolutely nails it. Now, if only someone could explain the weird prices on the menu... ($14.10...?) read more
