I've only been in Vancouver for a little over 3 years and I've been going to the frog for just as long. I've explored gas town enough to know the ins and outs, to have a place with great food and drinks for a good price can be found pretty often in Vancouver, but the factor that puts this place above all the other pubs is the staff. From having a bif group of people to just grabbing a bite for lunch by yourself, they are all there to provide the best service possible while you enjoy your drinks. Everybody who works there is awesome, but out of all, there is one person that sticks out the most and that person is Izzy. Every time I'm there, she takes that extra time and effort to make every drinking moment the best drinking moment whether it be the first time or the hundredth time. I am glad to say this is my go to pub!!! read more

As far as pubs go this one deserves top marks. It's cozy and cute but still a little classy. The staff are friendly and good. The food is delicious and reasonably priced. There's an interesting selection of beers on tap. I mean really, what more do you want? Last night I had a burger with house salad. The burger looked and tasted like it was homemade. The salad had sunflower seeds and mandarin pieces - yum! I had a pint of the Phillips Blue Buck to wash it all down. We sat at the bar and checked out all the funny back bar decorations. They have a selection of t-shirts for sale and the motörfrog one cracks me up. We only had 45 minutes for dinner and the bartender got us in and out with super efficiency. :) read more

Time for me to reveal my true colours to the yelpiverse. I went to the Black Frog for the final game of the season for... the Edmonton Oilers. Yes, I'm an Oilers fan. I can't help it; I was born in Alberta during the middle of the dynasty. I can remember Wayne Gretzky being sold to the LA Kings. I have a special place in my heart for Esa Tikkanen. I still get choked up when the Ryan Smyth trade is mentioned. I have a small kernel of hate for the Ottawa Senators for making Jason Smith "move on" from hockey. I'm proud of Doug Weight and Jason Arnott for leading the Islanders and Predators as captains as their careers wind down. So why do I subtract a star from the only bar in town with an Oilers flag above the door? I had to inform the bartender that the game was on. I realize it was the final game of a miserable season (the worst since the dynasty was fully dismantled in 1992), and they didn't even have the opportunity to spoil the opposition's playoff hopes (like in recent miserable seasons), but it's the last game of the season for the beloved copper and blue! It's going to be a long summer with no playoffs and I was the only person there watching the game. That reflects poorly on the Edmontonians who live in this city and this bar, where they purportedly gather. Besides the fact that Vancouver seems to be home of the fair-weather fan (no matter who they root for), this place is awesome! Great beers on tap; the usuals and Phillips (IPA!) and Big Rock. The yam fries were acceptable and the rest of the food looked fine. The decor is neat, a bit of Oilers paraphernalia and an assortment of other stuff tacked up above the bar. There's a Melvins' 7" record up there that appears to be broken, but still caught my eye. The patronage seemed to be a motley mix. In addition to me (the lone Oilers fan), there were a few people with luggage, no doubt preparing for a journey from nearby Waterfront station on the West Cost Express, and a group of well dressed fellows who instantly gravitated towards the arcade cabinet in the corner. I'll be back next season to see how that first or second overall pick is doing and I expect a few more fans there at that time. read more

I really enjoyed the pub atmosphere with really old style brick wall and an extended glass room for sitting outside the building. The place has a very english pub feel and is decorated with all kinds of sports memorabilia. They have a big selection of drinks including a lot of local canadian beers on tap. Make sure to check out the daily drink specials which are new each day of the week. Overall the food was amazing and the atmosphere put it over the top. I came back 2 times during my weekend visit to vancouver. The schnitzel and fish and chips were both great as well as the service. I was pleasantly surprised by the veggie burger here! I live in fear of receiving mushy falafel burgers, but not at the Black Frog! It was a soy based patty but it also had veggies in it. It was crispy around the edges, held itself together, and most importantly... it was actually flavourful. I shared it with Jessica O. and we gave each other the nod of approval mid-chew. The beer selection is actually pretty decent. Lots of interesting imports and tasty local selections. The washrooms were really clean and quiet and the staff were super friendly! I don't know anything about hockey and don't care to, but if it's not a game night I'd be happy to come back here and eat the crap outta that veggie burger again! read more

I love the classic architecture of historic water street. Exposed brick archways, twenty foot vaulted ceilings, pre war ceramic tile. I love the classic look of English pub's. Large glass panel double doors, curved walls fashioned from glass brick, cathedral sized bar shelving made from polished hardwood and covered with bottles, old photos and sports souvenirs. I love glass walled atriums and covered patios with a view of the harbor and the mountains and the maze of steel and glass that is Canada place. Mostly I love that the Black Frog is a little bit of all of the above. Stopped by for lunch and a glass or three of saison pale ale, a recent discovery, fast becoming a favorite. Stayed a little later than planned, as I discovered my server, who I assumed was also the manager, is a clever and engaging fellow. Not to mention a persuasive salesman. A few saison followed by a tasty reuben on dark marbled rye, accompanied by grainy Dijon mustard and broccoli / brie soup. Followed by a few more saison. Must I tell you how this story ends? Made for a pleasant afternoon/ evening and a place on my must do this again list. read more

I visited the Black Frog restaurant in Gastown not too long ago and ordered a burger on the menu. I must say that it is probably the best burger I have had in Vancouver! The meat is what sealed the deal for me, they don't use regular ground beef, but instead they use steak...sooo tasty, especially with some seasoning and all the appropriate fixings. On top of the great burger came some excellent fries. I ordered a cold beer to wash it all down and was very satisfied. I highly recommend it if you haven't already tried it already. read more

Yet another cool pub in the heart of Gastown. Awesome! It was absolutely packed during a playoff game but the bouncer allowed me in to join my crew as I arrived late. We shared some appetizers, which included fresh veggies, tasty spinach and artichoke dip and yam fries. All typical pub fare but they did it well. I also tried the cabbage salad, which was definitely not your typical pub fare, but not quite what you'd find at an Asian or Asian fusion restaurant, either. It came with a soy-sesame dressing and almonds, which I enjoyed in combo with the cabbage and other veggies. They also had Sir Perry cider, which I had never tried nor heard of but really enjoyed. This was my second time at the Black Frog, and I think I like it! We had a view of an... er... eccentric homeless dude outside directing parking traffic for tips. He was wearing one of those bright orange vests, but I'm pretty sure he wasn't actually employed by any of the businesses in the area. But boy did he have a whole lot of energy, I mean seriously, this guy was committed to his work, waving his arms non-stop to try to get Gastown tourists to park their rental cars down by the Black Frog. Tried to get in on a Saturday night with a group of 5 (Oct.16/2010). The doorman sneered and instructed us to wait, the bar was half-full. When questionned his chest balooned out as he tried to get in my face to explain that it's a restaurant and not a bar, thus the capacity is as many seats as there are. I guess he didn't see the 10-15 empty seats that we saw. We took it as an indication that he didn't want us to drink there. No problem, we went to the Greedy Pig instead. read more

A popular Friday lunch hangout for me and my work colleagues! It's so strange though - some lunchtimes it's empty, no problems getting a table, other times you'll be lucky to get a space at the bar! I go mainly for my fave beer, Innis and Gunn. It's not cheap, but it is Scottish ;D They also do Fruli, a loooovely strawberry beer. Yam fries are my food of choice here, just can't get enough of them, and they come with such a tasty dip! The decor is pretty fab - my fave pieces being the T Rex on one shelf, and an Arsenal football scarf draped across another. So yup, not exactly the cheapest place, but a good hangout nonetheless. read more

I have to love Black Frog by default because I am from Edmonton and it is modeled after Black Dog. Even though Black Frog plays Oilers games it is certainly a whole lot nicer than its Alberta cousin. Way less grime and grit. It doesn't even smell like a locker room! The menu is basic bar food but a little more palatable than what you would find most places. Beer and wine are reasonably priced for the area and they have daily specials which is always nice. Atmosphere is great especially when they open their mock patio and let the ocean breeze blow in! I don't think you have to show your Edmonton ID at the door...but you better be cheering for the Oilers or they will kick your ass out! read more

Excellent atmosphere and awesome food! This is one of Vancouver's best kept secrets. Sitting at the foot of Cambie St in Gastown - this alley pub has a perfect view of the N.Shore mountains as well as the waterfront. With a spacious covered area that has huge open windows to give it a patio-feel, this place is excellent. Drinks are dirt cheap and strong! Cheapest Guinness pint in town on Sundays (4.75) and possibly the rest of the week also. Staff here are very friendly and will likely remember you and your drink if you go on a regular basis. read more

If you're going here for the service, please dont! Food was pretty decent (experienced better)...had the buffalo wrap and frog beer. But the service was horrible. Right when you walk in, you'll have a bouncer looking guy in your face, requesting for your ID! Secondly, the waitress is horribly rude and slow. I asked for a plate twice, and when I reminded her after 15 mins that my plate hasn't showed up...she rolled her eyes and said it's coming. My friend and I arrived and sat ourselves because no one was at the door. The dining area had flies everywhere. We sat around looking at all the servers, none of which came to help us. finally 5 minutes later a server that looks like a total bitch comes up, doesn't greet us, only asks for our ID's and leaves menus. I had to raise my voice for her to come back to us. We were already disgusted with the numerous flies buzzing around so we only got drinks. I may be slightly bias because I am a die-hard Oilers fan, and I lived a couple blocks from the Black Dog in Edmonton, and frequented there, but I love this place. This is especially handy for me, since I can't justify subscribing to NHL Centre Ice when I want to catch the games that aren't on TSN, CBC or when they play the Canucks (and want to watch a game with the sound on). Their food is pub fare, but good pub fare, their service is attentive and generally quite good, and any establishment in Vancouver that is as stoked about the Oilers as I am gets bonus points. Also, when there isn't a game on, the atmosphere is generally conducive to conversation without having to shout and use hand signals from across the table. Yelp defines a two stars as "Meh, I've experienced better", and that sums up the Black Frog pretty well. I've gone to the Black Frog twice now. Once for a couple of beers, once for dinner. The menu and food is pretty much a checklist for standard Vancouver pub food. Yam fries. Check Below average burgers. Check The usual suspects of beer on tap. Check. Service was good once, but the second time, not so good. Food was below average, clearly my burger had been left out for a while before it made it's way to my table. Had to track down the waitress for refills.... I guess it's simple, if you're in an area surrounded by amazing places to eat with interesting menus, why bother going to something below average? read more

This is a pretty good place to watch the hockey games - while the Donnelly night clubs filled up by 3pm for the Canucks playoffs - this place was still pretty empty, until shortly after 4pm. There is one giant screen and a cushiony bench at the front... and what's even better is that - THEY HAVE BLEACHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!! three rows between the cushion chairs and the bar top tables.... a good fit! There is a good selection of beers, and the food is pretty good as well. The wings had good meat to them, and the grilled cheese really hits the spot. No it's nothing special but it is quite satisfying when you're hungry, watching the game, and have good friends to share your evening with. read more

Been here a couple times with some friends that are regulars. It's a dependable pub, nothing out of the ordinary, with a good selection of food and drink at relatively reasonable prices. I've heard they are part of the same family as the Black Dog in Edmonton, which is quite popular in the same type of genre. Either way, it's a laid back pub that you can just relax with your friends. Just when you thought Gastown was only good for boutique clothing shops, furniture stores, and similar tourist traps there's the Black Frog, a rail-side pub/restaurant offering a wide selection of draft and bottle beers. Audio speakers line the old 25-foot ceilings as well as paraphernalia including snowboards and ice hockey gear. Leather covered ottomans seats and boots are ready for you to relax in and The Black Frog boasts a great selection of music from little-known Australian bands to the modern day Chilli Peppers. Outside a heated patio beckons, which is great for both summer and winter get togethers, and metered parking is everywhere as is the bus line, skytrain station, and seabus. Friendly and laid back, this is the ultimate weekday pub. I've tried pretty much everything on their menu and have to say that their Lasagna and Steak Sandwich are their best dishes. The bartender's always friendly and willing to strike up a conversation, the prices are reasonable and the decor is awesome. It's almost like a timeless pub, I doubt it'll ever change. read more

A favourite haunt that has been sadly neglected now that we don't live down the street. Good food, great selection of drinks, good prices. I've always had a solid meal here and enjoyed myself, but it's nothing to jump up and down and scream about. A complaint: the smoking "patio" is really two square feet of wood out the back door, definitely not the required 6 meters. If the windows are open on a breezy day, cigarette smoke will blow in and RUIN MY LIFE. Seriously, it sucks. Gotta love those random Saturday nights when you end up in Gastown. No plans on where you want to go or what you want to drink, just jump on the seabus and go. I love Gastown. I would live in Gastown If I could. It has everything. Character, loads of places to go, it's not really green like North Vancouver but every street makes you feel like you are somewhere new. For once I did not Yelp where we were going to go. We just got off the seabus and started walking. Since it was a Saturday night in Gastown, you can imagine that most places were busy. So we just kept walking to find somewhere fun that did not have a line up. And eventually we found the Black Frog. We sat at the bar, even if tables are open, I love sitting at the bar. This is probably from my time as a bartender. I love watching people work on the bar; mixing drinks and pouring beer. It's also partially because if they have Guinness on tap and I order one, they better pour it properly. The Black Frog has Guinness on tap, and yes, they poured mine just right. My friend ordered a spiked lemonade. It had just the right sweetness. She is one of those girls that like cocktails but not too sweet. Sounds like an oxymoron to me. Nevertheless, they are hard to find. The atmosphere is fun. The bar has so much stuff to look at. They have lots of sports paraphernalia; soccer club scarves, Oilers hockey stuff (that's ballsy in Vancouver!) and they even had a Green Bay Packers helmet and cheese head. Melt, love this place. Packers rule! My friend and I only had a quick snack at the bar. We ordered yam fries to split, as always. They came with a curry mayo. I have had some bad curry mayo before. Some people get way too "fancy with the spices" (Yes, I just quoted Ratatouille) and the mayo ends up kacky, for lack of a better word. These yam fries were cooked perfectly and the curry mayo was nice and light. I definitely recommend them. I would like to see what the rest of the menu is like. I will be going back for sure. I wish Black Frog was in the United States. We stumbled upon it while walking through Gastown. It is definitely not as pricey as the other restaurants in the neighborhood, but it is still tasty if you like pub fare. The waitresses were really cool and liked to hear stores of how life is in the southern region of the United States. My boyfriend and I stopped in here for a drink because it didn't seem to be swarming with people. It was a little bit dive bar-ish, which we really liked. The drink menu was full of old classics like a sex on the beach and screwdriver which was partially fun, partially disappointing (I love trying new drinks). The drinks were pretty weak too. Even though we weren't hungry, my boyfriend has a hard time resisting wings, so he ordered some honey garlic wings. We were both big fans. I used to love the Black Frog. It was our go-to place for our almost weekly Beer Club about 5 years ago. We were known around the joint and we loved that there was an almost Cheers-y vibe about it. Since then, a lot of our group has changed jobs and have just also grown older. Also, a terminal illness in our tight-knit group made us all less gung-ho about celebrating the end of the week without this person being able to come with us. This Friday was the 2 year anniversary of our friend's passing and we decided that we should all get together at the Frog to honour them. One of my friends went up to the bar to buy a beer and was told that it was $2 more than the price in the menu. When my friend asked why that was he was told that they serve pints at the bar and they cost more. My friend mentioned that there was only one price on the menu, but the bartender insisted that it was different at the bar. After my friend paid the tab and walked away in a bit of a huff, the other bartender (about 6'5", black hair) came up to us (we were sitting in the back on the lounge seating) and immediately puffed out his chest and literally bared his teeth and said to my friend in an extremely confrontational voice something along the lines of "So, you just fingered me. What was that about?" As this man was not exactly short, it was extremely intimidating. After my friend told the bartender that he wasn't even the guy who served him, the tall, dark-haired bartender admitted that it wasn't him, but that his friend, the other bartender, said he had. After about a minute of back and forth, my friend who is also 6'5" stood up so that he could talk to him on the same level and the bartender basically stepped up to him like he was trying to get my friend to punch him. Luckily, my friend is basically a pacifist. But, it was immediately evident to everyone at out table that this bartender was looking for a fight and an excuse to throw our friend out of the bar. This scuffle ended with the bartender finally walking away and the sister of our friend who had passed away in tears. After much deliberation as to wether or not we should leave, we decided that it was too late to get our largish group into another bar, so we stayed. The sister then decided that she was upset enough to talk to the bartender and the bartender insisted he was in the right, but then "bought" her and himself a shot. I didn't know drinking on the job was allowed... Stupidly the friend of ours that got berated (though it felt like we all had been berated by the bartender) stole a glass out of spite. It was dumb, no doubt, but what the bartender did was unforgivable. Anyways, we will regrettably never be going back because of this. The Black Frog will forever be blacklisted by us. read more

Extremely offensive staff. The way they speak to customers is absolutely unacceptable. The staff member at the door was very young, poorly dressed and extremely unprofessional. Behaving very strangely as we arrived. He was possibly high on cocaine. Very aggressive and not really helpful in trying to find us a server. We didn't even get menus. Had to read the one outside. If you have a girlfriend you care about, I'd be very careful not to bring her here on a date. One of the men working here was extremely rude to her. I believe both men and women deserve an equal amount of respect. I spoke to two managers. One of them fluffed off the situation and never called me back. The other made an excuse when I followed up to see what was done about the situation. She then proceeded to give a very empty, fake sounding apology and essentially told me to go screw myself. If you want to be treated with respect, then perhaps this isn't the place for you. They simply don't care because they make so much money off tourists. I'm very chill and easy going, but nobody speaks to me (or my girlfriend) like that and gets away with it. And now I must share my experience in order to make sure others don't find themselves in the same situation. read more

I think I'm in love with their salad. Their dressing was really memorable for me, and I've been craving to go back there ever since. The fries that my friends ordered were good too (although my boyfriend wished there were more yam fries!). The burgers were just meh, and their steak sandwich was all right too (supposed to be medium rare...it came out medium/almost). The service was pretty nice. Our food came out all together, and our server was friendly. The atmosphere wasn't too loud either, so we were able to hold conversations without yelling at each other. Always a plus for me! This place is great! Good food, reasonably priced drinks. This eatery is a great place to catch the game. Its fairly large, ample seating and its not as insanely crowded like other places during a game night. They have a big screen projector and they kindly mute the sound during intermissions so that you and your company can make great conversation without annoying adverts blaring in the background or on the speakers. The food is pretty exceptional as well. I started off with the chips and salsa. Your basic tortilla chips with a really good house made salsa that had something in it that I couldn't quite place, I think it was capers but not totally sure. I ordered the Guinness beer which was on special for $6. For my main I ordered the pulled chicken sandwich with the house salad. It was super good! The chicken was tender and the bbq sauce was tangy, sweet and savory and the slaw at the bottom was exceptional.
