We hit up Black Cap in Stowe today for afternoon coffee and a sandwich. A busy busy spot.. They have a small outdoor covered seating area looking onto the pretty Stowe Church & street. They also have plenty of indoor tables. It's a very attractive hip spot inside with a visible chalkboard menu & lots for sale from local artisans. We had the Vermonter Sandwich along with two coffees. It was good.. not amazing but good. Glad we got to try it. The staff were friendly & efficient. I will start by saying this has been one of the best sandwiches I have ever had. We had the Vermonter. I wasn't too excited about it at first because I don't like fruits in my sandwiches, but the apples in this sandwich blended in so perfectly. We ordered two lattes. One was iced and the other was hot and both had the maple syrup flavor. I wasn't a big fan of how the coffee tasted, but it could have been the flavor I got. I did go to Stowe the first week of October, which might explain why so many people were inside the coffee shop, and why we had to wait 45 mins for two coffees and a sandwich. It was $36 for the three things ordered. I did think it was pricey, but the sandwich was worth it. The inside is pretty spacious with lots of seating and there's also seating outside. It's located right across the Stowe community church and it's surrounded by cute shops. The staff was friendly and tried their best to accommodate the large crowd and worked as fast as possible. If I am ever in Stowe again, I would come back here! read more

I loved visiting Black Cap Coffee! There is plenty of seating in the cafe, and it's a great place to catch up with a friend or even do some work. This is my 2nd time visiting Stowe in my lifetime and 2nd time visiting Black Cap. It was a bit later in the day so I opted for a decaf latte...a Tuxedo, to be specific. The service was A++. I cannot explain to you how necessary it is to have someone kind and friendly as your first impression. I hate to say how rare that is these days. So, Black Cap wins the day on that one. Next, the barista/cashier nailed the espresso. Like nailed.the.espresso. Perfectly dialed in. I tend to get very meh espresso shots most times at most places and they're usually doctored enough to pass as "good." This time and this place, it was perfect. I am sure it will be a very long time until I get back to Stowe and I am sure that person will be gone but I am grateful for the experience of both the person and the latte, today. read more

Overall solid experience here! Definitely a cute downtown spot in Stowe, great for grabbing a coffee or a quick bite before perusing nearby shops. There is a good amount of seating as well which made it easy to sit down and warm up for half an hour before facing the cold! We ordered a large coffee, large Maple latte, and a cinnamon bun roll. The coffees and pastry were delicious -- no complaints about taste at all. The cinnamon bun was thick and the frosting was a perfect balance of sweet and flavorful. I will definitely be ordering it again when I return. My only critique is that the latte price was very steep compared to other local spots. A latte is nearly $10 if you add a flavor or milk alternative. The latte tasted great, but I don't think it warranted a $10 price tag. It's the kind of place that feels warm, local, and thoughtfully run, which is something that's getting harder and harder to find. I've been saddened to see picketing outside the Stowe store. While everyone is entitled to their perspective, it's hard to watch a small, independent business take this kind of public hit. This isn't a giant corporation -- it's a local business run by real people who contribute meaningfully to the community. They welcome people to linger, meet, work, and connect, which makes it a genuinely valuable gathering place with a great vibe. I also understand that emotions run high when a store closes. Burlington, especially around Church Street, has become a very challenging environment for small businesses in recent years. From my perspective, it seems clear the owners made efforts to navigate a difficult situation, and it's unfortunate to see the conflict continue publicly. I personally find the ongoing demonstrations disheartening and would much rather see our community focus on supporting local businesses and fostering understanding. I hope people will take the time to experience Black Cap for themselves rather than judging based on online noise. Great food, great coffee, and a place worth supporting. read more

The line to get up to order was less than ideal, waited almost 30min just to order and then it took about 10-15 to get our coffee and food. The food was okay but the wait was a lot. Went once during the weekend and once during the week and it just was very busy and a long wait. I got a sandwich the first time and drinks. I didn't notice the 10% mandatory service charge already included (they keep quiet about that), so seeing the tip jars (yes plural), I tipped on top of it--double-whammed. It feels like a deceptive tactic that works because most customers are just passing through. BUT REALLY... THE OWNERS SHOULD TRY PAYING THEIR STAFF, instead of passing the cost of operating their business directly onto unsuspecting customers on top of their already super-premium Vermont prices and state taxes. The lamination on the croissants is perfection: layers of flaky, buttery goodness. They're amply sized, too. You're getting what you pay for. The barista was welcoming and we had a good conversation about the city. There is a large selection of homemade pastries and baked goods. I was pleasantly surprised to see gluten free and vegan options! Their portions are great and I was able to inhale a tiny flourless chocolate cake and a slice of pumpkin cheesecake.
