Short rib (likely chuck roast) with "polenta" aka the white foam
    Denton J.

What a surprise! In the land of pizza and pasta, it was clear this place employs and supports a real chef with a culinary vision. Welcoming, authentically looking stand alone place, 2 blocks from the ocean. Simple Mexican turned top notch (with a price). Hands down, best margarita I've had at the shore, done the right way, no lime green sour mix found here. $9 at HH and $18 outside of it, was a bit of sticker shock. The locals will be up in arms about that in no time, as they should. The Espresso martini was also awesome. Expensive but awesome. Truffle guac, and tuna tartar done very creatively. Short rib (likely chuck roast as short rib chunks are not this big but who's to argue) with polenta was a bit overstated, as the polenta was either an afterthought or overly thought, served as a white foam/sauce atop the meat..quite the curveball. The thought of polenta sold us and we were a bit let down for the price, to see it served this way, and it ended up sending the dish into the sticker shock category since it lacked substance. It was almost bechamel/cheesy, not corn at all. The server confirmed that the sauce was indeed the "polenta" component and we dealt with it. We were the only table in the place for 2 hours on a Thursday evening in late September, which was concerning. Even being in Avalon, I'd say the prices leave people wondering where else they could go for cheaper. A Mexican dinner shouldn't be $300 for 2, though that may be the cost these days for quality.

Arcadian pearl oysters, wood fired shrimp, and crispy fish tacos

This place is hands down my favorite place in Avalon. The frozen margaritas are insanely delicious along with the cuisine. I had to order one of everything. The late night happy hour is a great deal as well with very friendly service all around. The ambiance makes for really good pictures with your favorite people.

    The Lobster Tacos

The prix fixe menu is $85 a person. For this price and the claim of upscale dining, I was expecting more from this place. We had a terrible dining experience here. We made a reservation, we were on time, and we were seated immediately. We waiting over 20 minutes to be greeted by a server or staff member. After 20 minutes, I went to the host stand and reminded them we have been waiting a while and a server came over immediately. The hosts were very kind and very apologetic. The server was very nice, but she was definitely overwhelmed with the amount of tables she had to handle. The pacing of the meals was slow between some courses and other times they were running the next course before we were finished with the previous one. The cocktails were terrible and extremely overpriced. I sent back a $20 paloma. I could not finish it. I left hungry. I got the lobster tacos and found a shell in my meal. The portions were very small. The pictures attached are the main course of the tacos. The steak tacos were okay. The steak tacos were flavorless and with an interesting tasting sauce. Overall the food was average at best. You would think we would at least get real strawberries in the dessert. The service was bad. By the end of the meal, the server could tell we were unhappy and became rude. The outdoor dining space is very nice! The overall vibe of the place is cool. I would not recommend this place.

Great food, we especially enjoyed the guacamole and the duck wings. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for good Mexican food down the shore.

The did a nice job with decor but the food was average but extremely overpriced. The tacos are better at buckets and 1/2 the price.

$40 for 2 drinks served with palpable disdain from the bartender & an overwrought, overpriced menu. Skip.

Luckily there is a door that closes off the noisy bar area. The service was good the waitress gave us some recommendations and was knowledgeable about the menu. We started with a few cocktails which were good and booze forward. We didn't have appetizers this trip. We did have the wedge salad which was good not great underwhelming wanted the dressing to be better. We had a party of 4 two people ordered the filet cooked different temps. One ordered the short rib with potato's and carrots. One ordered the crab cake. The filet was cooked perfectly we ordered a sauce but it never came. It was flavored well enough it didn't need any added sauce. The short rib was savory and tender falling apart . The crab cake was good but was grilled a bit too dark for my liking. It was chock full of lump crab. We didn't have dessert for dinner since service was slow and took a while to complete dinner. The side dishes all lacked flavor. The creamed spinach was bland and under salted and runny. The broccoli was just ok and a bit cold. The potato was good but can't mess those up too much. All in all a good dinner it's not a great value but expected at the beach. The entrees were good sides fell short. Lots of mixed reviews here nice looking place though . Maybe try for yourself !

The chopped and wedge salad were good however, the rest of our meals were mediocre at best, even the bread and butter were terrible. One guest had to return her drink three times and finally gave up trying to get what she asked for. At the prices they are charging this was very disappointing.

I have learned to expect a lower standard of service in Cape May County, regardless of the average…read morecheck amount, so I was pleasantly surprised to see someone raising the bar in the way that The Reeds in Stone Harbor appears to be doing. The last time we dined at "Sax At The Reeds" was soon after they opened, and it had not been good. My entree on that first visit had been so inedible, I took one bite and left the rest. That may have been a first for me. It was that bad. I didn't even ask for something else; I was so disgusted. This most recent experience was considerably improved. My wife and I were celebrating our 29th wedding anniversary a few days late, and when prompted during the reservation process, I had checked the box for "special occasion" without thinking much about it. It seemed rather incidental, but I thought it couldn't hurt. The staff at Sax did not disappoint. When we arrived at the front desk, the sharply-dressed gentleman working the host stand was engaging and personable, and when we answered that we did indeed have reservations, he guessed our name and welcomed us and congratulated us on our anniversary. He asked if we preferred a special table and offered a window seat if we liked. If we'd known they had a fireplace, we probably would have chosen to sit in front of that, but the window seat was lovely. We were soon greeted by Patrick, our server for the evening, and he arrived with two flutes of sparkling wine on the house and wished us a happy anniversary. Patrick was an animated and exuberant server who definitely knew his job, understood the food and wine, and had strong opinions about the menu. We were never in need of anything, but also never felt overwhelmed by his presence. A good balance. My wife began with the broiled oysters, which were phenomenal, and I had the steakhouse salad, which was surprisingly good for being an original take on a simple wedge. It was exactly what I wanted and a perfect size. Not too big or small and elegantly presented. For our entrees, Jane ordered the crab-stuffed flounder with lobster sauce on a bed of risotto, which she thoroughly enjoyed even though it's not something she would typically order. Jane has a very critical palette and is a great cook herself, so she's not easily pleased. She thought it was a delicious, well-balanced dish. I had been craving steak, an uninspiring selection, so I ordered the NY Strip with maître d'hôtel butter. While we enjoyed our wine, Patrick returned to offer me a choice of five different knives, displayed in a wooden box. He explained each one and asked for my choice. I told him I would go with his recommendation, and I got something simple called "The Knife," a hand-hammered piece of fine cutlery. The steak was perfectly cooked, although I personally found it under-seasoned. I like a salty finish on my red meat, so Patrick promptly brought me a small dish of fleur de sel, and we were in business. My sides were whipped potatoes and carrots, both of which were good, but the potatoes were presented as if plated with a large ice cream scoop, which made them appear fake diner potatoes. Even Jane called it out as an unusual choice. The carrots were perfectly cooked and had an almost citrus finish. For wine, we had selected a Chardonnay chosen by the sommelier as a special for the evening, and it was good but not transcendent, while the Chappallet red blend on the menu was absolutely exquisite. Powerful and smooth with a great finish. For dessert, I had planned to order the warm apple pie with vanilla ice cream that I had seen on the website, but it wasn't available. Instead, we ordered something called the Dubai Cheesecake. Dubai chocolate was something I was vaguely aware of, but wasn't entirely sure what it was. Patrick assured us that while the dish was hard to describe in terms of a flavor profile, it was a killer bit of confection. He wasn't wrong. It was crunchy and creamy, complex in its simplicity. A transformative dish, and we're not even big dessert people. I won't pretend that any of this was a bargain, but excellence rarely is. I'll admit to a bit of sticker shock when the bill arrived, so be prepared to drop a few bills. But if you're looking for great service and food, you won't find anything better at the Jersey Shore than Sax at the Reeds. It's worth a special trip.
