After much debating on where to go for our 8th anniversary celebration, my fellow and I decided the menu at Black Bottle sounded too good to miss. Reviews said to make reservations, and since we were swinging in on a Saturday evening, we figured it couldn't hurt. We walked from the ferry dock and made good time, so we got there a bit early and there was no issue seating us right then and there. In fact, it was pretty dead.
The hostess sat us at the back of the main room, gave us menus, and shortly thereafter, we were served two small glasses of water alongside a full carafe. Our waitress came over to say hi and get drinks started for us. We got the rotating cider and stout - both of which were good, but pretty run of the mill, which was a little disappointing since they were $7 each. When it came to the eats, we ended up with a "starter" of the kolkata pepper cauliflower fritters, followed by the lamb meatballs and local sausages with beer mustard.
The cauliflower fritters were very nice. The batter on them was light and perfectly fried. It didn't taste or feel heavy like poorly, or overly, fried food tends to have, and the glaze on it was a great combination of savory and spicy with a hint of sweetness. I would have loved to have that glaze on a Chinese dish! The lamb meatball platter was huge! It had four meatballs, several pieces of amazing flatbread/pita style bread, sumac hummus, a wonderful creamy tzatziki type dip (it was like if chevre and tzatziki had a baby), cucumbers, and a pile of pickled onions, olives, etc. All excellent tasting. My platter of three locally made sausages alongside a bed of lightly dressed arugula and walnuts, were phenomenal. I almost didn't want to share them. Good thing I love him.
We opted for dessert instead of another entree. He ordered the coffee liqueur brandied cherry panna cotta, and I ordered the peach blueberry kettle tart. The waitress informed me the kettle tart takes about 10 minutes. Within a few minutes, the panna cotta came out. It was a little embarrassing to sit there watching my other half eat his dessert while I had nothing on my side of the table. Yes, he shared a bit, but I feel like they should have waited for my kettle tart to be done and brought out both at the same time. However, given that they're a small/shared plates type restaurant, they might not have realized we were ordering with the intent to not actually share. Oh well.
When my dessert came out after about 20 minutes, it was pretty damn burnt. The peaches on top were super charred and half of the crust was very dark. We had to catch our ferry back (with 25 minutes of walk time in between), so I ate it and it actually tasted very nice despite the burnt parts. Only one small part of the dark crust was inedible, but I was so full at that point that I couldn't eat it anyway.
Overall, we had a great experience and everything we tried was delicious. It was a bit spendy for a normal date night, but for our anniversary, it was worth it. We both said we would come back and try other things on the menu, so the few small negatives weren't big enough to be deterrents. read more
