Black Bear Pub Burger and Salmon BLT.
    Steve C.

What a peaceful little haven Black Bear Pub is. A serene setting overlooking a lake that shines against the backdrop of the mountains behind it. This pub is in the private community of Big Canoe, which I was fortunate to be a guest at today. I had the half pound black bear pub burger and my wife had the salmon BLT. We cut the sandwiches in half and shared. The burger was cooked to perfection, juicy and full of flavor. My wife enjoyed the salmon BLT, but I found it simply average (however my half had very little fish on it). We had the sides of onion rings and sidewinder fries and they were both good. Full bar and half dozen drafts along with very friendly staff.

Hanger steak with brussels sprouts. Delicious.

We came up to Big Canoe to visit some friends. It was our first time going to the Black Bear Pub with them. We were a group of eight and they seated us promptly. Our server came over quickly and got our drink orders. We had the meatballs and fried green tomatoes for an appetizer and both were tasty. I had the hanger steak and it was delicious. I especially loved the brussels sprouts that came with it. My husband had the salmon and even though he asked for it to be cooked medium, it was more well done. Still had great flavor but was definitely overcooked. We had a great evening here and I look forward to coming back again.

Blake was an excellent waiter and was extremely prompt. The salmon was great, but the burger was just average.

Mar 2019 - Gomer Pyle said "Fool me once shame on you; fool me twice shame on me." I was invited back to the Pub for another lunch; I will be more direct the next time someone invites me and ask if we can go somewhere else. Service was similar to Jan 2019 (see below). I ordered the Deli Deluxe (hot) with Onion Rings. Contrary to the description there was less than 1/3 lb. of meat, one side of the bread was completely soaked (bottom) while the other was hard as a rock (top). Not only were the onion rings cold, they were frozen rather than those I had last time (see below). My wife's Chicken Tenders arrived cold and soggy with the crust falling off...she order Sweet Potato Fries but was served French Fries. FWIW - the Runner realized the mistake and replaced the Cold French Fries with Cold Sweet Potato Fries. I hate to think this is the best the Clubhouse in Big Canoe can do, but it obviously is...I'm extremely embarrassed. DELI DELUXE 15.95 1/2 lb. of sliced pastrami and corned beef piled high on locally baked rye bread spread with our housemade made Russian dressing and served with a deli pickle spear Jan 2019 - Ate in the Restaurant on a Saturday for an early lunch...was seated at a table next to a large party with a young child when there were myriad options that were much quieter. Our waitress appeared, told us everything about every item on the menu, took our order and didn't return until she brought the check. Our orders were delivered piecemeal by Runners (some were hot, others were not), we had to track someone down to refill drinks, and the overall attitude was "we really don't care if you're here or not.." I had the Burger and Rings...cold burger but Rings were good Wife had the Chicken Salad Sandwich - nothing to write home about (VERY small portion for $15) Others in the party had a cup of Cream of Mushroom Soup and Salads - they didn't look appetizing at all. Needless to say I was disappointed...

This time we came after hiking all day and sat outside with our dogs. Ambiance-touristy Irish pub. It's a big place that still tries to be Irish-ish. They fail but it's a worthwhile effort and people seem to like it. One issue with the design-it's a huge place but they have 2-single person bathrooms-one next to the bar and one on the second floor. I don't even understand how you get a building permit with that occupancy and so few bathrooms. My wife and I each got a burger, sub veggie patty. They are getting 2 stars for the fact they don't upcharge for the vegan patty. Everyone upcharges for a veggie burger, so this is an impressive give-a-way to customers. However, I added mushrooms and roasted red peppers, which added $2 each, and gluten free sandwich bread, which was a $5 upcharge. First, those veggies should not be a $2 upcharge each. That's obnoxious. Your menu burgers have toppings and are cheaper than a plain burger with 2 veggies. But, I am not taking stars away for the upcharge. I saw them, I accepted them. My problem is that with those changes, this was a $25 burger at an Irish pub in north GA and it tasted like a $5 burger from an Irish pub in north GA. It was dry, unseasoned, and very bland. You charged me $5 for 2 slices of bread from a loaf that costs $7.99 retail. A red pepper is $0.75 cents, maybe, retail, and for a couple teaspoons you charged me $2. Who knows what mushrooms cost, but the point is, for two toppings and sub 2 slices of sandwich bread, you charged me for a high-end steakhouse burger and served me a terrible backyard grill burger. On top of that, I ordered a whiskey (knob creek) on the rocks. On my check was a $2 rocks charge. So...you charged me $2 for ice? It makes no sense. It's the same amount of liquor. When I asked the server about it, she said because they pour an extra 2 ounces in. Obviously she lied because she had no clue what she was talking about. First, why would adding ice equal and extra 2 ounces? Maybe if I asked for an up martini or something, but I am adding volume, so why would you also add liquor? Second, my whiskey was $13 and a restaurant shot is 1, maybe 1.5 ounces. Do you really mean to tell me you gave me an extra 2 shots, maybe an extra 1.33 shots of a $13 liquor for $2 only because I asked for ice? I'm not an idiot. So, poor food, lying service, and unreasonable upcharges. I'm not coming back

There's plenty of parking nearby so you don't have to walk far. This neat beer bar reminds me of the crowler shops that you used to find around Atlanta, with around 30 taps containing about a thrid local beer, so you can sample several local breweries without visiting each one (they're mostly not too near each other so this is very convenient). The taproom "beertender" seemed to be fairly knowledgeable regarding the various offerings - there's also a convenient list highlighting the different beers with style notes. We sat at the bar and were able to bring in some food from the nearby restaurants (I grabbed some wings at the nearby Marthie Ann's which were excellent). To drink I tried Hoptown's own Orange Mango Wheat - a somewhat basic wheat beer with hings of sweet tangerine and mango - nothing special. I had a Maine Brewing "Lunch" with the wings which is always a winner - it's an exceptional New England IPA. Service was great - I can see myself hitting Ooltewah just to come by for a break in driving.
