Your classic American diner. Overall service was good. We were quickly seated and I appreciated our server checking on us frequently. The food is ok. Their breakfast menu is a lot better than their dinner menu. I had the fried chicken and it was dry. Definitely tasted like refried chicken. My son liked his breakfast meal since all the kids meals after breakfast time comes with free ice cream. Theming for Black Bear is standard for Vallejo. Nothing special here. Black Bear is a great place for a quick breakfast and coffee. I ordered 2 eggs with Chicken fried steak, Crispy Hash-browns and substituted for a Pancake Instead of toast. The food was cooked as I liked and plenty of food to even take some of it home. The service was good and we were seated within a few minutes. We are long term customers of Black Bear Diner Vallejo. On today's date I traveled to your place of business to pick-up an order. The pick-up line was long, and I waited in line. Just prior to reaching the front of the line, a Filipino male called out the name of one of your employees. Despite the fact that I was next in line, she ignored me and began helping the man, who was third or fourth in line.. She is a young Filipino Female, and when I told her I was next, she continued assisting the man, intentionally ignoring me. Her conduct was rude and unprofessional. We only ended up here because everything was closing by 8PM. My first time at this establishment. Because my BF wanted some chicken fried steak we ended up here. And I opted for the fried chicken. In the beginning the server was attentive. After we got our meal she checked on us once. Then, after we finished our meal we wanted some dessert. She was no where to be found. Other servers didn't offer any help. I finally stood up and I saw her standing by the window to receive orders. We then saw her serve the food to the larger table of 8. She didn't tend to us and ignored us. Finally I got up and asked for help from another server. My BF ordered the bread pudding and I asked for the chocolate cream pie. The dessert comes and my order was incorrect. They gave me the banana cream pie. At this point we just wanted the check and leave. We had to flag another server so we can get the check. Our server finally came back and said she was busy rolling silverware's because they were out. Disappointed. We rate the chicken fries steak a 4/5 stars and the fried chicken was over cooked and the breading was too hard which rates 2/5 stars. Inside the ambiance is like a log cabin and of course bears decoration all over the place. Plenty of ample parking. Definitely will not return. Funny thing is they have these placemats with their credos (a statement or system). # 2 Credo states "Your server will give the attention you deserve (hopefully, with a little personality too), One thing you'll never get at The Bear is a canned greeting in a slick atmosphere"! The host stand was organized, and my server was upbeat and attentive with coffee refills without hovering. Food-wise, portions are generous. The chicken-fried steak was crisp outside, tender inside, and covered in a peppery country gravy that hit the spot. The cinnamon roll French toast was a fun splurge--gooey center, lightly toasted edges--and the side of hash browns came out golden with a nice crunch. The biscuits were fluffy and served warm; extra jam and butter arrived quickly when I asked. Got dinner to-go for three people. We ordered two Bobs Big Bear Burgers and the shredded corned beef brisket hash. I honestly feel like I totally wasted my money. Both people told me their burgers were not good at all, and the fries were cold. The shredded corned beef brisket hash was so dry it was a joke. I felt like I was chewing Jerky. The biscuit that came with it was hard as a rock like it was stale. When I did take a small bite it was so dry it immediately sucked up all the moisture from my mouth. I hate to ever give a bad review, especially without having anything positive to say. I try to be fair and am normally understanding if something maybe doesn't turn out so well. But there was nothing good or redeemable I could say about the quality of any of the three meals we received. read more

The day I order only a side salad, the server confirmed she makes the side salads. My husband got his Cobb salad in 10 minutes. 15 minutes later I told him the server forgot my order. She was no where in sight. Only after my husband went up to the cashier to ask about my salad did she come over and quip, "oh your side salad." On March 3/22/26 we decided to to eat breakfast in Black Bear in Vallejo with friend party of 4. We were welcomed by a rude receptionist little asian girl. She had very bad costumer service and very un friendly. We eat there almost once a week and most of the time the older ladies are nice but those kids need to be train to treat the costumer properly. We came up to Vallejo and my fiance was craving black bear diner! We got seated (party of three) in less than five minutes. The food was entres were amazing, but the fries were not seasoned. The kitchen was open although the service was a tad slow probably because the staff was on break. As usual I ordered fish & chips. It came hot and crispy. The slaw had a thin dressing so the vegetables shone. The tartar sauce was adequate. I suspect it came out of a bottle. The portions were large for me but there's plenty of folk who would wish for more. All in all, black bear diner got the job done at an odd hour. What great service, food & ambiance Saturday morning @ 11:30 with eight men from our church. Our waitress was prompt, friendly (kind to give us separate checks) & attentive to our needs for extra water/coffee. Our breakfast & lunch orders were correct, came out quickly & were large portions & tasty! See attached pictures. The diner atmosphere is always interesting with the black bear theme & photos. My wife and I had breakfast here since we were in the area. It's been a while. Wife ordered the Veggie Omelet, home potatoes, and sourdough toast. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak Omelet, hashbrowns, and sourdough toast. Everything was really good, hashbrowns were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Great place that has a variety of food with generous portions. One thing I like is that the restaurant consistently sticks to a theme. There is a bear mascot in the front of the store. On the inside there is both bar seating and table seating, plus a jukebox that adds to the retro feeling. They also sell Black Bear themed merch which I think is cool! Even their menu is unique because it's designed like a newspaper. On the menu you can choose a wide variety of things -- breakfast, lunch, dinner, soups, salads, burgers, sandwiches, you name it. I've gotten The Grizz before and it's pretty big -- it ended up being two meals worth for me! I've also gotten their turkey club sandwich with a side of fries that hit the spot. From undercooked, unappetizing food to unprofessional and dismissive staff, this has to be one of the most disappointing breakfast/brunch spots in the area... and disgusting. The last time I was here, I voiced concerns about a mushy, doughy breakfast, the manager showed no interest in addressing the issue or offering a solution. Whenever I come here there's hardly any wait to be seated. So that's a great bonus if you're looking for a sit down breakfast place that'll get you in right away. That's only applicable in this location. Black bear diners in Vacaville and Suisun always had a wait and lines out the door. The immediate parking lot can be a little small and cramped. But Black Bear actually connects to a plaza. So there's plenty of parking nearby. Just have to walk a bit. The three times I've been here so far the first two experiences were great. The third not so much... First two times service was fantastic. Everything was so fast. We happened to be seated in the same general area (by the kitchens. To your left as you enter the restaurant). Bear Black consistently has very large filling portions and the food quality is very consistent between locations as well. The third time we were seated on the right. Maybe the service area there is much bigger or it was a miss day. We waited a long time and had to flag down someone to take our orders. That was a slow service day... I've enjoyed the eggs Benedicts, hobo omelette, pancakes, French toast. It's all pretty good food. I always leave with a to-go container of leftovers. Tip: grab a menu while you wait. This way you'll be ready to go when it's time to order. Credit to the people taking down names and greeting people. They were organized and we're friendly. They knew how much time to wait until getting seated. You're probably thinking, "that's their job." You're right. It's their job, but you still have to execute it efficiently and smoothly. Our server was awesome. I wish I had her name. She served us with a smile. She came to our table the right number of times. I wasn't feeling smothered or abandoned. I have been to many different BB restaurants and usually they are all clean and well staffed. We had stopped coming to this location due to poor service that has been degraded over the years. With guests in town they requested that we go to Black Bear. I'd begrudgingly took everyone out. Upon ordering our drinks, we were forgotten about and it seemed to just spiral out of control from there. My wife's orange juice was forgotten about and our request for refills never came in and our server seem to disappear for long periods of time. When our food arrived after 40 mins (not long, to be honest). We asked for extra napkins and ranch. The first person who delivered our food, we asked for these items from, never came back so we asked our server. Our server forgot as well so our guest from out of town reluctantly ate their food without their requested condiments. As our meals had been completed and with concern of waiting too long or being forgotten about again I went to front register to pay and get boxes. Upon arrival I found four, yes 4 servers engaging in water cooler chitchat. I was helped and upon heading back to my table saw our server Maria with check in hand. I considerately shared our experience and concern about being forgotten about and her was, "I will let them know". I don't think she understood that I was letting her know about the poor service she provided. while we were trying to leave the table, she made a valiant effort to clean off the table. In the midst of our departure. Maybe she was trying to show her effort, but it was too little too late and at the worst time possible as we were trying to leave, she seemed either oblivious to us, trying to leave the table and couldn't do so as she was reaching over in front of us, or was in a rush and needed it, cleared for the next group, which was nowhere in sight, as there were many tables open at this point. If you're looking for a family style, breakfast, lunch or dinner place where you can sit down get great service, and food, I highly recommend Buttercup! I guess this is the final time we coming back. I do not eat here very often maybe once a year. I was craving for steak and eggs for breakfast. I ban IHOP for life in Vallejo the food is just bad and cold. The service was just slow and horrible. The waiter was okay but she never came back around until we called her to pay the check. Mid way thru our food my husband wanted Oreo shake. We ask another person they never put in the order. The 6oz ranch steak look depressing. I order medium it was dry and salty. If I wanted a beef Jerky this was it. Also everywhere now has the credit card machine in a mobile device to take your payment. I am not a person to complain on the spot. I just won't come back. I hate those machine cause the only starting option 18 percent. You can manual adjust but you have to look at the machine carefully. They stand there watching you put the tip. It's too awkward.
