9/14/25 Tempe errands. We were starving and BBD was the first place to appealed to us. First Visit to an east Valley BBD, last visit 8+ years ago far SW valley. Parking 5/5 Missed another rush, lots of private parking. Atmosphere 5/5 Like all locations, mountain lodge decor with sprinkles of Black Bears scattered about which made me think they should incorporate them into the restaurants name! You're welcome ; ) Service 3/5 Oddly they had plenty of servers hanging around but few customers. Several gathered near to bar stool counter chatting, and the waitress who was working our area was asked to give up our table so another server had something to do. He took our drink order and disappeared for 10 minutes. After delivering our drinks he said I'll be back and disappeared again. Meanwhile the server who was working our area was hustling, clearing tables. She was a go getter! The our guy came back we ordered dinner salads and Big foot Chicken fried steaks. Off he goes returning with our salads then dashed off. No silverware on the table and we waiting several more minutes until we flagged down Miss Hard worker who was kind enough to get us eating. Service here was terrible! Shame on the Manager, we won't be back. He was one of the gaggle gathered up front laughing and carrying on. Food 5/5 We both loved their Bigfoot Chicken fried steaks, salads and scratch mashed potatoes. Our experience was brightened by the "customer focused" server who rescued her coworker. She received the well earned tip! If I were hiring, I'd hire 10 more just like her. Good luck Tempe BBD.

Shame on me for not visiting sooner. I live 5 minutes away and I never thought of going here for breakfast!! They don't advertise in the neighborhood like IHop and Danny's, so it just never came to mind. I was shocked when I showed up and the entire dining room was full!! It was Sunday at 10:00am! I waited 10 minutes to be seated, which was acceptable. The food took a bit long (almost 20 minutes) to come to our table, but my cinnamon French toast was worth the wait. The menu has overwhelmed amount of items, but that's why they are so successful!! No advertising and still packed! 10/10!

Went for the Friday Fish Fry Tonight. Great fish and sides. Jalen was our server and was great. He anticipated our needs and provided wonderful service. Would definitely recommend.

I got the BLT with onion rings to go for the first time, it wa pretty good but not super special. I've had the omelettes before and am a big fan of their breakfast, I will probably stick to that in the future!

In my humble opinion, blackbear diner has the best pancakes! There's secret is they use sweet cream to make them. The bacon is also pretty good...LOL

Our server Erick was great and very attentive to us even when the kitchen was backed up from a 20 top table. Our food was hot and delicious when it came out and all the staff were working hard and all were very nice and working as a team Will come back again!

We are regulars at a few of the local Big Bear Diners and are proud of it, they rarely let us down. This is one of faves and works perfectly during our local shopping near to it. The meals are consistent, the offerings are more than generous, taste delish almost always, and the atmosphere is excellent and the service at each visit has always been fab! At our visits over the past few months and beyond our coffee, orange juice or Arnold Palmer we've tried their renditions of Loaded Grits with real bacon chunks, terrific lasing of butter, and of course a hearty helping of cheese... one of the best renditions in Phoenix of my South's Cookin' loves! Their incredibly fantastic Chicken Fried Steak Omelette (our first time trying it) consisting of tender Chicken fried steak chunks (they have a fab batter by the way). It is chock full of tender fresh spinach, nice strong red onion, what appears to be fresh mushroom, chopped tomatoes, red and green bell pepper as well as jack & cheddar cheeses, and they top all this with their house made country gravy - yummy! Yes they do have other delish meals such as terrific burgers and an array of sandwiches for lunch. For dinner you can find delectable eats like salads and soups and a really, really good Chili, but you'll find many, many more items we've had that are too long to mention. Ensuring we go during their non-rush times to avoid long lines, we enjoy every visit. You should too!

Our group of 8 ended up here when another Tempe restaurant had a kitchen emergency and cancelled our reso an hour before dinner. Alter Ego was able to accommodate us, and we were glad they did. If you enter from the street side you'd never know you're in a hotel restaurant. It's got an upscale, classy vibe not usually seen in hotel dining. The waiter and bartender were attentive and knowledgeable. The menu wasn't huge but it was a great variety of options. Table had some salads, flatbreads, burgers and a round of butter cake desserts. Each was really, really good. Way more sophisticated plates than expected. Also had a bunch of craft cocktails, unique and well made. Sometimes the best experiences are unplanned. But you SHOULD plan to give this place a try.

I got the bang bang shrimp and it was good (6/10). The problem that I have is the pistachio gin fizz was an absolute no! I am a HUGE fan of pistachio and gin so immediately I had to get his drink but it was beyond mediocre. Are we drinking only syrup??? My last complaint is the coconut tres leches dessert.... Do we actually know how to make tres leches or we just naming desserts however we want? Just curious. It came out super hot, steaming more like a molten cake. As a Hispanic woman, I was expecting a creamy moist cake to celebrate my graduation but this was not it as well. Last but not least if the bald manager with the orange shirt wants to eat in the back of the kitchen, not the problem I get it (I work at restaurants) HOWEVER shoving your two index fingers into your mouth to get your debris out was my last straw. Like I said I like this restaurant and never had problems but today felt like a fever dream there.

While the ambience is fairly simple, the overall experience is a positive one, especially once the food arrives. I ordered the lox and bagel and was impressed by how substantial the portion was. The lox was generously layered, with a large amount of arugula on top. The arugula appeared to be lightly dressed with olive oil, which added great flavor. While it did not fully align with my personal dietary preferences, it was well executed, and I would be happy to return to see if it can be adjusted. The dirty chai was another highlight in terms of flavor. It was well spiced and not overly sweet, which I appreciated. Although it was described as very hot when delivered, it arrived closer to lukewarm, but the taste itself was enjoyable. Service was efficient and attentive. The check was dropped off relatively early, which initially felt a bit quick, but our server continued to check in on us throughout the meal, creating a balanced and courteous experience. The fresh squeezed orange juice was excellent, and everything we ordered was well prepared. Parking in the area can be challenging, though the nearby parking structure behind Pedalhaus makes it more manageable. Overall, this is a reliable brunch option with strong portions, thoughtful flavors, and enough positives to make it a place I would gladly return to.

It was absolutely delicious and the best part of the dining experience. The BLTA (Bacon Lettuce Tomato Avacado) sandwich was way too heavy on the lettuce and the bread was quite hard, making it difficult to eat. It was moreso a handheld salad. Service was okay, though not especially attentive, as our water wasn't refilled. At the host stand there was some confusion when we arrived. She didnt realize we were standing there and then when my boyfriend asked a question about a menu item she didnt respond. Not sure if she was just not paying attention, the music was too loud, or didnt want to converse with us. Sort of awkward. Now listen... the spot itself is cute. Once we actually got service, our waiter was cool. It just took forevvverrrrr & I ended up having to request cutlery after food was served. To be fair, it was busy, but there also seemed to be plenty of wait staff, so I'm not exactly sure where the disconnect was. Food-wise: the spinach artichoke dip was definitely the table favorite. My caprese panini was ok, it was sadly lacking pesto which feels a little criminal for a caprese situation. Our friends loved the fancy French toast & I was absolutely there for the prickly pear mimosas The entire brunch honestly felt like it was one dropped plate away from becoming a sitcom episode. One poor new waiter dropped a plate on the floor, then later knocked glasses off the rack above the bar & shattered a couple right next to guests sitting there. I genuinely felt bad for him because you could tell he was having a rough shift. That said, I really appreciated that they acknowledged the long wait & gave us a discount without us having to ask. That kind of accountability goes a long way. Overall, I'd still go back & give them another try because the atmosphere was fun, the vibe was there, and I can see the potential. They serve salads, bowls, sandwiches, all-day breakfast, protein shakes, fresh juices, and other healthy, fast-casual eats for dine-in or take-away. My kind of place! This is one of those spots that I'd frequent if I lived nearby (ChopShop, want to open in Northern California?!). I stumbled upon this spot after a little self-guided tour of ASU campus on a sleepy Sunday morning (everyone must have been asleep after the big football game the day before). I'd forgotten about this spot and it was such a happy surprise to find it again and to see that they survived the pandemic and are still thriving. First visit I ordered: -Cheat Day Wrap: scrambled egg, bacon, white cheddar, smashed avocado, tomato, brown rice (I ordered without rice), and turkey or ham (I skipped these too) *DELISH on a whole wheat wrap!!! Full of flavor and super easy to eat. This hearty breakfast sando fueled my active morning of hiking "A" Mountain (Hayden Butte Preserve) the running around the the IronMan course to spectate (30,000+ steps as a spectator!). We couldn't leave town without another trip. I took my guy and we enjoyed a salad, another breakfast wrap, and: -Chicken + Prosciutto Sandwich: grilled chicken, prosciutto, fontina, arugula, fig mostarda, dijon (no dijon for us), on a house bun. If you're in the area, looking for a healthy-ish breakfast, lunch, or snack, definitely check out Original ChopShop. Note: it gets busy at peak meal hours with students and faculty. Order at the kiosks (super easy), grab a number, find a table in their cozy interior or on their large front patio, and your food will be brought to you. Have a question? But my first experience was not that great. They had plenty of places to sit, whether you like to sit indoors or outdoors. I decided to try the "Glow Up Shake," which is their protein shake. The shake was okay; it didn't blow me away. Considering that it has banana, pineapple, dates, etc., I was hoping it would melt in my mouth with a galaxy of flavor--darn, no such luck. But like I said, it was an okay drink that I think others might like. Now, as for the $3 pre-wrapped Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie? The first cookie they brought me was hard as a diamond. I asked if they could heat it up to soften it a bit like they do at Starbucks, but he said they can't? Wow, I didn't realize that heating a Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie was so complex that it can't be done by some places. Anyway, the minor good news was he brought me a different cookie that was soft enough to bend and break off a piece and chew without worrying about breaking a tooth. But the big question is, will I be back? Of course I will; the place has a plethora of healthy food which I like. And I'm sure when I order something other than a diamond-hard Triple Chocolate Chip Cookie, my experience will be somewhat better. This place does have a fantastic Wi-Fi. That's a plus.
