Not sure what happened to Black Bear. They used to make the best hash browns no matter what location you went to; so crispy golden brown on the outside and moist on the inside. Two people I had brunch with ordered hash browns and they turned out pale, soggy and barely cooked. I felt like lunch so I got the grilled chicken Ceasars sandwich with salad. They were stingy with the chicken and the chicken breast was so overcooked that it was chewy and rubbery. It ruined what would have been an okay sandwich. Seems like lunch is too complicated for Black Bear. Service was good. Ambiance was fine. Not sure I'll be back. My wife and I were disappointed. read more

Wanted a 90s feel last night and drove to Black Bear Diner. The log cabin feel and friendly service threw my wife and I into a time machine of family road trips and childhood memories that we shared with each other while waiting for our food. The bacon mac and cheese was rich and creamy, with a nice amount of crispy bacon to add texture to the rich white cheddar. With garlic Parmesan toast on the side, it was a great way to reminisce about the 90s. The fish and chips were crispy, and seasoned well with salt. The cod was flaky on the inside and the tartar sauce was on the sweeter side with dill pickles added in. For dessert we shared the Apple cobbler with a scoop of ice cream on top. The warm filling from the sweet apple slices made the buttery crust and cold vanilla ice cream melt into a magical bite that can't be matched. And sure enough in the breakfast extras section were hash browns. That's all I ordered because I read about the portion sizes. They came perfectly prepared. Not greasy. The catsup with black pepper and the Baby Bear original pepper sauce, all mixed together was the perfect condiment. I've never been to one of these before, we didn't have high expectations. It was our plan to go somewhere else but that place was closed. We were very pleasantly surprised! I got a delicious New York strip with salad and two sides for about $30; this would have cost 50 or $60 in a higher-end restaurant but was just as good. I ordered it blue, so I would get rare. It was perfect. And tasty and tender. I had the mushrooms and blue cheese added which was delicious. The salad was large and delicious. Taking the price and generous quantities into account, 5 stars! I got fruit as the two sides since I don't eat dessert. The cornbread was also very good. The iced tea tasted like it was real iced tea. My companions and a BLT club with avocado. The french fried sweet potatoes got high marks. The quantities of the meals were very generous. I should have taken pictures but I forgot. The only problem with the whole meal was the waiter was not really on top of things. I sat there with my whole dinner in front of me while my companions waited for theirs. Great location and staff! Big portion sizes, haven't had a dish I didn't enjoy, and really love their breakfasts and desserts. It's got a great feel to it, very cozy and familiar, and seems to always have a steady flow of people. It can get pretty busy though -especially in the mornings- which adds to the wait time so make sure you account for that- but it's worth it. Looking forward to coming back. Chocolate cake with huckleberry ice cream was memorable. Can't go wrong with whatever looks good to you on the breakfast menu. Outside of that one time I spent Thanksgiving at Napa's location, I'd never been to a Black Bear diner for any meal later than brunch. Last night, we discovered their Diner & Dinner Deals menus - my mom with the Fish & Chips, me with the Pot Roast (which I added mashed potatoes to in addition to red potatoes, because the gravy needed a home). If the calorie counts on the menu dissuade you, know that you're very unlikely to finish if you typically eat a regular-person's serving size. We left with two entire meals in hand as leftovers. Came here with friends as we slowly start to venture out. The seating was busy but distanced, and they have an outdoor tent that opens about lunchtime. Although it was about 10:30am and lunch was soon approaching, we all opted for a late breakfast. We were greeted by our server (whose name I forgot to note, and now is lost to my brain archives - apologies!) took our drink orders, which came quickly. We settled in to our breakfast orders, and ordered: A vegetarian omelet (with mushrooms, onion, diced tomatoes, bell peppers, spinach, jack cheese and this one included avocado, not listed on the menu - sweet!); and some "2-egg combos" where you build off the menu, starting with 2 eggs any style, and adding a house made biscuit (very good here! I ordered one on the side for myself), choice of country red potatoes, or grits or a fruit bowl or one or more of these. Many choices! The food came quickly, and was nice and hot and fresh! All the dishes were great, no complaints from any of us - not much left on the plates, either. Overall the experience was enjoyable - we had no sense of being rushed, the service was excellent and above expectations, the food choices plentiful as well as the actual servings, and all for a decent price.
