After our movie my wife was craving some French toast so instead of going to iHop for the usual fare we went to this place. The food was decent, and cooked properly and came out in a decent amount of time. The server was on the ball and kept attending to us to make sure everything was well taken care of. The next part is the worst when we go to pay for the meal. It appears that the servers don't run credit cards they just drop off the bill to go pay up front maybe to entice people to pick up a pie to take home or for some other reason? For 20 minutes we waited for the long line of people to pay their bill. I asked the single cashier if she could ask for some help? She said she was the only one that can ring up people. I saw a manager over in the dining room doing nothing. I saw 3-4 other servers weren't doing anything important as the restaurant wasn't very full at this hour. Finally it is our turn and I hand the bill to the cashier and sure enough she asked "do you want to take a pie home?" I said "nope" and she said "are you sure?" I said "Well yes I am quite sure, if i wanted a pie I would have ordered one before standing in line for 20 minutes." BBD is still one of my favorite breakfast places for their sweet cream pancakes or their country fried steak. It's a lot of food for a good price, and pretty delicious. I'm moving my rating down to 4 stars from 5; however, because if I'm going to be more scrutinizing with my ratings, BBD is not a 5 star establishment. I've tried some other dishes and they were ok, but nothing to rave about. That said, I will continue to rave and direct people to their sweet cream pancakes. I always come for two things, breakfast, and burgers, the burgers are clean, and in my mind far better than lucky 13. Their service is always on point as well, I've never been left with an empty coffee mug or water cup. Aside from what I like to come for.. I feel they everything else is mediocre. Their French fries aren't my favorite either, so with a burger I always get a side of hash browns or onion rings to substitute. Don't get me wrong however, though I dislike a large part of their menu, their breakfast menu is extensive, so there's still a lot of options. We recently took our granddaughter her in the evening for her birthday dinner. We were seated by Josh and he was our server for the evening. He made it special for our birthday girl, was so attentive to her as well as us. Our meals were all very good and came out in a timely manner. Not a huge breakfast brunch guy. Went here and got the cheapest thing on the menu. Biscuits and gravy. The biscuit was large and fluffy. They have a wide variety of breakfast foods. Most of the items are fairly high priced in my opinion. They make up for it with having large portions. 4 stars because of the price. Black Bear is one of my top three favorite restaurants. This location is definitely up to their standard. They have fantastic food and excellent service. I also love their decor and log cabin vibe. I may be somewhat a vagabond, but I enjoy going here every once in a while. Today our server was great, she was nice, attentive, and patient. I ordered the Joe's Hobo Omelette and it was delicious. I have ordered it several times before and this time did not disappoint. The egg was cooked well, the meat was savory, and they even remembered to take off the spinach and add tomato like I asked. The only real problem was that there was too much cheese. But that was easily fixed. The hash browns were good too. The biscuit was thick, fluffy, and tasted great. I highly recommend Black Bear Diner and this location in particular. You will be glad you came, regardless of your lifestyle. A very mixed experience. We were seated as soon as we got there. The place was nearly empty at 6pm on a Friday. That should have raised a few concerns. There were actually more employees than customers. In spite of that, it took several minutes for the wait staff to get to our table. After dropping off menus, it took 10-15 minutes for them to take our order. My wife ordered ribs, but wanted the gravy for the mashed potatoes to be on the side, not on the potatoes. After that, it took another 20-30 minutes to actually get our food. However, the main courses were served literally 15 seconds after bringing our salads. And, my wife's mashed potatoes had the gravy on them, not on the side. There were also many times we had to remind our waitress about things, such as bringing the corn bread that were supposed to be included with our meal. Overall, I'd rate the service as poor. On the good news side, the food was not bad. Not sure if I'll ever go to Black Bear Diner again, at least this location. read more

I am still not too impressed with Black Bear Diner but our picky dog loves the turkey dinner that my wife brings back to her and if it wasn't for Joelle and her great service I wouldn't care if I never stepped foot in this place again. We try to get Joelle anytime we come in otherwise the service has always been hit or miss. My final straw was when their A/C unit was turned down and the manager left with the key to adjust the temp ( or that was the excuse) and the restaurant was pretty warm. That night my wife and I ordered the limited time top sirloin that they have been offering all month and it looked like two hockey pucks that the dog wound up with and the veggies was not the advertised sautéed bell pepper and squash. The waiter did apologize and said the restaurant stopped serving the squash (then why advertise it with your limited time only steak??). Anyway, we're back this morning and our favorite waitress is here so we're having having the Bear's breakfast. Looks good so I better dig in before it gets cold. ---- 02/06/2020 Not much has changed here. The seRvice is hit or miss and today for breakfast they were packed and the servers were hopping. Been to several Black Bear Diners before and always busy, we were seated quickly but our food took forever and not cooked how we wanted it, hash brown potatoes were burnt and asked for toast but was very soggy, also some items missing that we ordered. Terrible. Ordered food to-go for Father's Day, and something was wrong with every part of our order. The first meal (Dad's) was a completely different burger than what was ordered, the second meal was supposed to have no tomato and it still had tomato (reasonable oversight if everything else wasn't wrong), the third was supposed to have onion rings and had fries instead. Today was my first time trying this place and I have to say it was very good. I had the New York steak and eggs very flavorful steak and country style potatoes. One of my favorite restaurants to come and have some home style food. Today I was in the mood for pancakes and they happened to have a steak breakfast special. Unfortunately it seems to be taking longer than usual. The restaurant was not busy at all. We sat close to the kitchen and could hear one of the chefs happily singing. My husband ordered fish tacos, my daughter ordered chicken and fries and my son in law ordered a burger and fries. The food came out all together there was another waitress that helped our waitress bring it all out. Presentation was amazing, the only sad thing was that it was all cold. I think unfortunately our waitress did not get it out to us when it was done, we had noticed it sitting there for a while. We choose not to send it back. Her service was friendly. Our favorite waiter (The Asian with the British accent) rang us up and he always puts a smile on our face. He must have an amazing memory, if he see's us he will always come over and say hello. Black bear is a country style all day breakfast, lunch and dinner diner. I have been to this location quite a few times and it just seems to be hit or miss depending on your server. The food is decent with some bordering on very good. They have a sweet cream pancake that is like eating a fortune cookie pancake. The portions are fairly generous. Compared to village inn or a Denny's they are top notch but about 50% increase in cost. When service is on every thing is superb. When it's off then it can ruin the whole experience. What a tragedy that this restaurant has gone downhill, more so than usual. I'm not sure if new ownership is the issue or just the lack of care yet this place is declining quickly. I usually order the meat omelette and I'm sad to say that all of the meat in this omelette tasted old. Their coffee was watered down and tasteless and the pancake lacked its usual fluffiness and taste. The place appeared dirty and the waitresses overwhelmed. The icing on the cake to this dreadful meal was being told that their credit card machine was down all day but they could write down my information and charge it later to which I smugly replied " no thanks, I prefer not to have my information stolen today but thanks. I'd prefer pancakes that didn't fill an entire plate, but they really are very good. The meats were better than expected and the eggs were cooked as I liked. I've been curious about this place ever since I saw it. This is a place my mother would love just for the atmosphere. It's all decked out in a myriad of black bear knick-knacks, which she would want to take home to join her thousands of other bear ornaments. So, after driving past it several dozen times, I finally made the time to stop in and give it a shot. I love breakfast, specifically big breakfasts. Pancakes, hash-browns, sausage, bacon, eggs, you name it, all in one sitting. (Yes, I'm a pig when it comes to breakfast). Pancakes hold a very special place in my heart. The only thing better than getting to eat actual cake for breakfast is getting to eat fried cake with syrup on it. Unfortunately, I was slightly disappointed by their "famous" pancakes. Granted, the cakes were of gigantic proportions, which pleased me greatly, but they weren't as awesome as I was hoping. They were rather heavy, almost to the point of being difficult to cut with a fork and the flavor just was... tragically bland. For me, a pancake needs to be slightly crispy on the outside, full of epic fluffiness on the inside, and edible without syrup. (Syrup's just the icing on the cake). Overall, the breakfast was good. Definitely beats ihop if you're looking for a breakfasty joint; however, if you want great pancakes, I can recommend some good recipes ;) read more

Black Bear Diner serves up diner-style food and huge portions at this Sandy restaurant. Rustic decor and carved wooden bears decorate the restaurant. My french toast with eggs and bacon was pretty good. French toast was a little soggy though because it was made from thin, soft bread. They really should be using a thicker, heartier bread. Bacon was good. But who doesn't love bacon, right? Eggs were nothing special. My wife enjoyed the huevos rancheros benedict. It was flavorful but not at all spicy. Despite Black Bear Diner being a large restaurant, the area where we were seated was very cramped and pushed up near the breakfast counter and bar stools. Not cool. Service was good. Not sure I'd go back, there are other places I prefer for breakfast, but I'd probably give them another chance. I'd just pass on the french toast the next time and try something else instead. read more

Sunday, March 11, Sandy store. Phoned in an order for self pickup. The person I spoke with was difficult to understand and didn't seem to understand me. I ordered Pot Roast Dinner with mashed potatoes, country gravy and vegetables. Pleasent surprise, green salad came with it after I was told salad didn't come with it. However the tomatoes still had the flower part still attached. The main dinner dish was disappointing. Vegetables consisted of four slices of carrots and four or five pieces of onion a very skimpy amount of pot roast and an average amount of mashed potatoes. When I opened the tray the food was barely warm and the gravy was gelled with a skin on it. Required microwaving to get to a serving temperature. I was given a 10 minute pick up time. I was there within the time frame, and waited at the front desk about 10 minutes before they asked if I had been helped. I am thinking my order had been ordered by someone else earlier and handed off to me. There seemed to be about five tables being served. A group of four left because they couldn't be seated. Two other people were waiting to be seated. Maybe they didn't have servers? I won't be doing takeout at BBD in Sandy again. read more

What a freaking joke this place is. I came alone for a quick breakfast before a meeting. I was seated immediately by a less than personable lady. I waited for 15 minutes before I was even greeted by a server (I was starting to stand when they came over). She had some poor excuse about getting slammed. Umm...okay, I understand being busy but I don't understand ignorance. I ordered an iced mocha and biscuits and gravy. 10 minutes later my stale biscuit, my flour gravy that has zero flavor was delivered. Okay quick service with food that clearly was just sitting around. Still no iced mocha. When I asked about it, she said yeah I'm getting it. She proceeded to clear a table off, spill the drinks all over, and then go get my drink. She brought it to me now that I'm almost done with my meal, and I have yet to see her again. This is absolutely the worst restaurant that I have ever eaten at. I Love Black Bear Diner's National Menu but I think this place must be picking and choosing what they use. The only decent parts of my meal were the bacon and the pancakes. The eggs and potatoes were both cold and the biscuit was inedible. And by the staff's behavior is seems very clear to me that the franchise is not paying anyone a living wage. One waitress was serving her five I'll behaved kids and her husband their dinner. In the middle of our dinner a loud, obnoxious argument broke out among all of the wait staff and they sat at the bar and yelled at each other. And all of the wait staff appeared to be dirty. My son took my wife to BBD last Spring, and got her hooked. Then all three of us went there in June for a Saturday brunch. Cute place, great for kids, and a very nice menu. The wait staff was hustling everywhere (I think we saw at least three waitresses/waiters during our lunch,) but totally missed my wife's order as it sat up under the kitchen's warming lights. I guess that happens at times. The food was pretty damn good too. It was a nice break from the crowded and all too popular P-A-C, and Original Pancake House which recently opened in Sandy. Frankly, I prefer the less trendy (and less crowded) breakfast places anyway, and the Black Bear Diner suited me just fine, thank you very much. Although we went last June, I suspect this place gets heavy skier traffic in the winter...as it is right on 9400 S., the road up to Little Cottonwood Canyon, and the Alta and Snowbird resorts.
