I have eaten at Black Bear Diner twice now with my wife, and both times it was disappointing. The food was not even the correct temperature, and we watched it left under a heat lamp too long. A complaint about cold potatoes got them microwaved. The only reason I returned a third time was because of a business lunch, but the food and service was not any better. Food was down home and tasty. Had the Reuben with BlackBerry cobbler. They prepare their own corned beef. Had no idea! Very good sandwich, only able to eat half. I've been to the black bear in Sacramento and they have superb customer service. Seeing that this was the 2nd black bear that opened up I was hoping the same with customer service. It wasn't that busy when I went in, the host wasn't too friendly. Then when the server came around she didn't properly introduce herself. She left my friend without water for an hour and barely came by to check up on us. My bacon was not even crispy, kind of soft, the plate looked like they just threw food on there lazy. None of the servers pre bussed, maybe the line wouldn't be so bad if they did. Overall the food was cooked okay but it took over 40 min to get our food. Amira was our server n the service SUCKED BIG TIME. We live in So Cal n we don't have a black bear diner near us. That being said we eat at the black bear diner every chance we can. We especially look forward to the cobbler. We ordered drinks then our meals. It took so long to get the salads n shortly after the entrees came out. She never brought our corn bread muffins. The salt n pepper shakers were dirty n greasy n the ketchup was empty. Amira left dishes on table even when stacked for her to pick up, had to ask for refills n when she brought a new drink she left the empty cup on the table. She brought the check n didn't ask if we wanted dessert - had to ask for the free kids Sunday n she had the nerve to say u have to request it. Also there was a fly hovering around our table, she saw us shooing it away n didn't say a word WORST EXPERIENCE EVER. I will be calling corporate to complain as there was not a manger on duty - according to the cashier. read more

Signs for this restaurant chain are everywhere along I-5 from the Bay Area to Portland. They advertise good home cooking with large portions. They're right about portion size, the plates are huge! We went there for breakfast: pluses - quick friendly service, lots of food, great scrambled eggs and bacon; minuses - weak coffee & don't even bother getting 1 of the little pies. Looked like a typical small town diner chain that could go either way. It turns out that the food was good and a lot of it. They had good, down home cooking. Bad: The garlic fries were soggy and didn't taste very good. Good: Chicken fried steak was huge. Mashed potatoes were good. Gravy was great. Everything else was good. We got so much that both of us didn't finish it all. I NEVER leave food on my plate, but I did here, which was a shame because it was so good. They did go a little overboard on the bear theme, with bears on the walls of the bathroom, but I won't hold that against them. It was fun. read more

Been to Black Bear in Redding 3 times for breakfast. Great and friendly service, terrific comfort food place. Food is abundant and well prepared and arrives in a very timely manner. Chicken fried steak is a must. Desserts look great but have never had room to have one. read more

We stopped by here for breakfast. There was lots of variety, so everyone was able to find something they liked. The pancakes were huge and the egg dishes included lots of fresh ingredients. Our family was heading home to Washington State when we headed off the road for a bite to eat. We originally stopped at Lumber Jacks restaurant and even though the place was empty, had to wait for anyone to talk to us. Another couple was seated and (this was about 8 mins or so) and they were waited on first - we left at that point. We headed up the hill and gave Brown Bear a try. Out back sides hadn't even hit the chairs and we were asked what drinks we wanted, and they shortly arrive. The waitperson (Danielle) was one of the best we've encountered. She was on point and accommodated out deviations from the menu without hesitation. The food arrived fast and hot, and was tasty too. We recommend this place to anyone that is looking for a quick and good bite to eat. If you are looking for wifi they have that too. read more

I was thrilled to find a restaurant that didn't make me modify their menu items to make them gluten free. The Cheeseburger Salad was delicious! While this is a standard Sysco quality restaurant, the ingredients are fresh and the food is well-prepared...almost. The homemade hash browns were undercooked and crunchy. My husband's eggs were so runny the whites were not cooked through, but I our server was polite when we complained about the eggs and brought new ones cooked exactly right. My kids' meals were perfect and of good proportion. I like that the kids menu encourages them to be a "fit cub" and suggests that they choose fresh squeezed OJ or milk instead of soda and apple slices instead of fries. They also provide the best kids activities and menu options. The coffee was strong and flavorful for a diner like this. I was able to drink it black. Overall a good atmosphere with plenty of light coming through the all glass exterior, yet plenty of shade from the generous eves. Clean bathrooms with a subtle hint of cinnamon air freshener. We've been here before and will be back again when we visit Redding. read more

I thought that the cornbread you get was fresh because it was warm, but then I saw them microwave them- which isn't bad, but just in case you were wondering, that is why they are warm! I have loved everything I have gotten here except the meatloaf. It had carrots and celery in it, which I did not like. It seemed like it had too many vegetables. I thought they would be chopped up in small pieces so it blended well with the meat, but they weren't. The prices are also a little steep for the portion sizes. read more

My son was called out of state from KY to come to that area of California to work electric, so he is away from home and family, all this around his Birthday and Christmas / New Year Holidays. So I called at like 6:30 am this morning to get him a gift certificate so he could treat himself. I spoke to a young lady named Brice. She was so helpful and very attentive to this mothers need in purchasing a gift certificate, a mug and card and advise she would hand deliver it to his hotel. Decent food, good portions and friendly people, but they always seem to mess up our orders. We haven't sat down to eat there, so maybe it's a different experience, but we get take out every now and then. The past three times I've gone something was forgotten, or they gave us the wrong side (or entree). If you get take out, check your bag before leaving and make sure everything is right and is actually there. read more

I came here for the 10oz prime rib special but they were out (yet still had the sign of it when you walk in) so I got the rib eye instead and asked for it medium rare and it came back way too rare so I asked them to cook it a little longer and when they brought it back the mashed potatoes were cold. The Bear is a regular stop for me as a local. Love most the people, the food is "too" plentiful...waaayyy too much food on a plate, regardless of price. Too much wasted and this bothers me. However, the coffee is fresh ground in the restaurant and tastes great. Bad: Too many young folk without direction. Management doesn't pay enough attention to this. This morning (9/6/'10) the older, experienced servers weren't there and the youth took over. Lots of grab-ass, coffee cup never refilled, water glass empty...even when servers are walking past the counter with a pot in their hands. Inexcusable. And manager does the same thing...walks right past and pays no attention. It's the only bad mark on an otherwise good place. read more

I absolutely love BBD! Huge portions of excellent quality food at great prices. I've tried it all, and I never had anything there that wasn't great. They used to make the best green bean casserole--maybe if enough of us request it they'll bring it back! The ONLY problem I ever had here, and that's one time out of dozens, was when I ordered a breakfast at dinner time, and the cook obviously didn't know how to scramble eggs, and served a tiny portion...clearly not what they're known for. Breakfast service is very good. Egg's Benedict rocks! Corned Beef hash was a bit dry, but fresh made. Biscuits are huge. If you order biscuit s & gravy, get the half portion. Biscuits were raw in the middle. Server did a good job taking care of it. Gravy was sausage & pepper. Too much white pepper. Flour taste not cooked out of the roux. Cook needs to make the gravy with the grease from the sausage or use bacon grease. Add onion powder & use less white pepper. Biscuits could use some melted butter over the top for better flavor. I have eaten here and it was so-so, but always eyed that pie case in front, so today tried the coconut cream pie. I am sorry to say it was, without exception, the worst pie I have ever had. The crust was hard. Not crisp, not flaky, just hard and tasteless. The filling tasted like it came from a can. Before I bought it I asked the waitress if the topping was a Cool Whip-type topping and she said it was real whipped cream. OMG! It tasted nothing like real whipped cream. If there was any real cream in there it was overpowered by the artificial flavoring and the chemical stabilizers. After three bites I threw it in the trash and still burped it up for hours after. Yuck. What a waste of five bucks. Cheap, artificial ingredients. Makes me wonder what's in the rest of their food. read more

Big breakfast for a reasonable price. My father and I both got their special (2 pork chops, 3 eggs, toast, and hash browns/country fries/etc.) The eggs were good, the hash browns were great, toast was good, Pork chops were over cooked but still good. Paid 7.99 a plate for that. My girl friend got the club sandwich and loved it. $10 bucks. Total with drinks and tip was like 40 bucks but it filled us till dinner time. Only reason I'm not giving them 5 stars is they don't sell the decorative bear foot prints that are carved or burned in to the little wood pieces on the wall and service was a little slow but they were pretty busy. read more
