Driving through this city to visit my brother and stopped here to eat on a Saturday night. Everything was great from the wait time to the service and the amount of time it took to get our food. We were seated right away, received our drinks but we waited and waited for our server to come to the table and they were not busy at all. I saw a couple of girls standing up by the kitchen and finally flagged down the person who sat us and asked for our server. She came up to the table (she was one who was just standing around) telling the person who sat us (I'm coming walking up right now can't you see me I only have 2 hands) She took our order and since I special order she did repeat it back to me twice. When the meal was delivered mine was wrong. I had asked for a plain hamburger (she said plain and dry and I said yes) it was a regular burger with all the trimmings. It was sent back and of course I had to wait probably another 8 min or so for the correct burger. I had root beer and my Husband had a diet pepsi and they both tasted bad like the system has not been cleaned out for a while. Food was passable but nothing to get excited about. The french fries were very salty. No one ever checked back with us to see if we were doing ok. I think our days of going there are over. read more

What a Diner! I went here during mothers day and is was quite packed of course. The place may have been filled but they were able to deliver my order in a fair and reasonable time given the circumstances. I order the Chicken Fried Steak breakfast platter and it was HUGE! . The Biscuits i also ordered were a little on the hard side but thats ok for me. Overall i think the food tasted pretty good. The decor of this place is also quite stunning. I found this place on the way back from Yosemite off of Highway 209 in Modesto,Ca and arrived a little before 10 PM. We were starving and did not want fast food so we tried the Black Bear, The menu is weird, a 1969 fake newspaper from the Manteca News. The music overhead was Bob Dylan's greatest hits. A Twilight Zone kind of atmosphere. The waitress, Nena was very friendly and attentive. I ordered pink lemonade refillable and pretty tasty, not your instant powdered lemonade mix. I ordered the tri-tip for around $15.99 which came with salad, corn bread muffins, and two sides. I ordered the baked potato with everything and sauteed veggies. It was pretty good and alot of food for the price. I wished the tri-tip was grilled instead of pan cooked though. The wife had the pot roast but she complained about the salty gravy and sour tasting veggies, it was about $14.99 and the boy had fish and chips for around $10.00. Nice people, huge portions, sweet cream waffles. This place is awesome :) The bacon is real! They give fruit with everything! All around great place. Their servings are never disappointing. I love getting the breakfast. Just make sure when you get the hashbrowns ask for them extra crispy. The chocolate pie is also delicious and it's nice that it's single serving. For the price of this place the food has great quality. Our server was energetic and ready to take our orders. Four stars for the food one unmarked star for the service. Better off getting water cause you only get one cup of coffee through the whole course of your stay. Sadly, will not be returning to black bear diner. The first time I came I got sick from the food :( and the second time I came the service was very slow, also the cheese on the burger wasn't even melted. Wtf???! It's like they realized they forgot to put cheese on while it was and just slapped it on there without melting it. UM ok i guess cold cheese on a burger... cool. I give this place a 1star because it was a very clean place and we were greeted when we got there but that was the only good thing about it! We ordered our food and it did not taste fresh at all! It tasted as if it had been frozen and defrosted when we got there my backed potato was half soft and half hard from being over cooked and the beacon on the plate tasted like it was microwaved it wasn't all the way cooked and I love beacon it was very disappointing. Also our waiter never came to see how we were doing we had to ask the busboy for our tab. ooo yea one last thing both me and my boyfriend got sick off of what we ate and he never gets sick off of food ..id definitely never go back just wasn't me cup of tea:/ read more

I decided to give Black Bear diner another try today and I was pleasantly surprised. I must've picked a good day to go because it was not crowded and we were seated promptly and the waiter took our order right away. I must also say the restaurant was really clean, the manager must really be on top of things. We both ordered burgers and fries and we both thought they tasted good. My husband had a barbecue burger with onion rings on it and I had a burger with avocado on it. The only thing I found strange about my burger was, instead of sliced onions, my onions were " diced" and instead of a slice of cheese on my burger, they used " shredded" cheese. This leads me to believe they used what was laying around instead of what is typically used when making a burger. Other than that, our meals tasted good and the service was great. I should warn everyone not to eat here, the cooks working in the kitchen looked like they didn't know what they were doing and didn't care if they did something wrong. I didn't want to come here because I expected it to be like an iHop or Denny's, but my friend wanted to try this place for dinner so we came. The first thing I noticed when walking in here was the carpet. It was nasty and filled with stains. I could smell the mold growing under there. I got really disgusted that I didn't really eat the food I ordered. I got the ribs, but only had one bite and gave the rest to my friend. The ribs were really dry and I could tell they were old. Mashed potatoes weren't that great, but I did like the fries and our server was nice. I wouldn't ever come back here though. read more

Mixed feelings on this one. I had a chicken fried steak it was good nothing speacial. My wife had a patty melt she claimed it had no flavor and so I tried it and I had to agree barely any butter rye bread taste either and that's a hard taste to miss mostlyi think it was the actual meat patty that failed to pop......I'm guessing this is not the joint for burgers but a plate type meal.....FYI the fries were good 2& a half in my book but will round up to a 3 because the service was great read more

I'm giving two stars rather than one because the ambience and location are great..comfortable booth with garden views. This is my second visit but first in recent years. I ordered corned beef hash and eggs over hard with fruit. I know that quality can differ from cook to cook, but the food was not good..rancid fruit..all of it. I had to spit it into my napkin. I returned the over hard eggs because they were way over done and crispy coated. The scrambled were rubbery too. The hash was just meat with a very few potatoes..no peppers or onions. The biscuit was hard and cold..milk was warm. The orange slice was okay..not great, and the corned beef was good. I dine out every day. .sometimes twice. I wanted to like the food because the place is so comfortable, but i dont think i will return unless i am very careful.about asking questions like is it fresh or is it hot..and no eggs. Also the wait person should have rejected that crispy egg on sight. It was insulting and obviously inedible. The reality is that for a ten dollar breakfast plus drink price i could have gone to my garden cafe for a bacon oecan waffle which costs less is huge and mouth wateringly delicious or gone to the Mediterranean grill on j street where the eggs are always perfect. Our first mistake was to order Salmon in a breakfast diner!The fish was overdone and to dry to eat! Dinner came with fresh vegetables that were barely cooked and had no seasoning or sauce and no flavor. This was one of the worst meals we have had in any restaurant. Visited while traveling through town. Have eaten at many Black Bears, and this one was better than most! Service was good and definitely prompt. My family and I used to come here all the time for breakfast and I really liked it. I quit going here after getting cold gravy several times and not so good service 2 or 3 times. The last time was a horrible and rude server. My bacon was all deep fried "not cooked on grill" so disgusting tasting and looking, she never checked on us would not refill our coffee, we tried to be nice but it didn't work! I didn't understand why she was so nice to her other table but had decided she did not like us and on top of the just ok food we have never returned! There are at least two really sweet girls that work there but this one ruined it for me returning! read more

Since I am a server I am usually more lenient when we go out to eat. We were sat fast because the restaurant was slow. It took at least 15 mins for someone to get our order. When we order I asked for a strawberry lemonade. The food took 20 mins to get out and I didn't get my strawberry lemonade till the food came. The salad was good and my kids food was decent. But I had asked for my sandwich to have cheddar instead of American and that didn't happen. No one came to check on us at all. I was highly disappointed especially since the amount of people was more then the customers. I understand people have a bad day but at least apologize or check on us. I have always liked Black Bear, some are better than others. In Modesto, breakfast is far better than dinner, but that is where we went tonight. It was the worst experience we have had at this location. The server was close to being off, he was in a rush to finish up, so we felt like an inconvenience to him. We ordered. First we got our salads without the crackers we asked for. My grandson's bacon cheeseburger had no bacon, we had to send it back. The potatoes with my chicken fried steak were cold, I did not send it back. My husband's ribeye was well, he had ordered it medium. We had to flag the server down for drinks. There was a lady in the next booth going on about her order being wrong.It was a combination of things that made this the worst experience we've had. read more

I will say the plates here are huge and you definitely get your moneys worth. It is not a five star restaurant, it is a good diner. It is better than Denny's or Perkos by far. The dinner was good with big portions, lots to choose from. Well I went to the modesto location I have been there once before and the service and food was great. I went in today the service was again good but the food was horrible. I ordered cornbeef and hash.mI'm not kidding they shredded up ham(tasted like rubber ham) and were pretending it was cornbeef...my boiled egg was hard (days old I'm sure) All in All the server tried to fix but I couldnt eat after that.
