The corned beef was dry. Hash browns were undercooked. Overpriced dinner food. Slow to get the food out.

Love me some Black Bear Diner!! Coffees hot and I'm ready to take your breakfast order :) read more

Went there the 1st night... what a disappointment! They screwed up on everything... I will not be returning

it's sad to serve such great diner food but to have such terrible service doing it. I have eaten at dozens of BBDs - this was by far the worst service I have ever experienced at a BBD. When you charge somebody 4.00 bucks for a cup of coffee. I would think you would keep there mug full? read more

I ordered a Turkey dinner. When the dinner came to the table, I did a double take. Each piece of the turkey was at least an inch thick maybe even more than an inch it wasn't what I expected, and not that tender. Previously the food has been really good. I've eaten many times at the Paradise Black Bear Diner before the 2018 fire and had turkey dinners many times and the turkey was sliced normal. read more

Decided to take my gf to black bear chico ca today for breakfast. The restaurant was NOT at all busy. The waiter was polite. About half way through my hashbrowns i noticed something metallic and found this large very sharp metal shaving in my food ..... i brought it in and showed the one of the employees and they said someone would come talk to me.... I waited 15mins NOBODY came to talk to me or even say sorry. at this point I'm scared I've ingested metal shavings and my appetite is ruined. I just got my check, tipped the waiter and left....... But i am seriously never ever eating at another black bear dinner again and u shouldn't either. i wont tell you were to eat but i can tell you there is 100 places better than here. ......, I'm seriously considering going to the hospital to check my intestines for metal...... i will never eat food i dont prepare myself again .....smh. Look in the spoon in the photos provided. 05/29/23 Thanks black bear! read more

Worst restaurant experience ever. I ordered Tri-Tip and ribs... both were raw in the middle. My coleslaw was rotten and smelled disgusting. I literally almost threw up just smelling the coleslaw. I don't understand how a restaurant can let food that's obviously rotten be served. This is disgusting. This is a $23.99 meal... so very expensive and you get this trash. I returned meal and would not eat the food. I won't be returning read more

If I could give less than 1 star, I would. We had to wait over an hour for our food. My breakfast potatoes came burnt, and my bacon was cold .Will never be back! read more

Has some "opening" hiccups. We enjoyed the Redding location and Gridley locations so couldnt wait! But WAIT we did! Took forever to be seated and we were only two waiting and the restaurant was not even half full. Took 25 mins to get food at lunch, and it was cold. We will try again but were very disappointed in both quality and inflated prices read more

I love the quality of the food there. The service was top line everything is great. My only complaint is that it is about 15% too much for me. So with tip, even though the food was great, I still feel like I got taught a lesson. If I could afford it, I would eat there every day. read more

Overpriced forsure but the Food looks great on the menu but I don't know how it tastes because they took 2.5 hours to prepare my DoorDash order and when I would call to get an update the lady would lie and say oh yeah it's being boxed right now.... Terrible service for expensive Dennys food. Yikes read more

If i would give 0 stars i would. We arrived at 10:00am for breakfast today. We didn't get our drinks until about 10:30 and that is only because we asked another server not to mention i ordered a vanilla iced coffee but received a mocha but that was the least of my concerns. I ordered pancakes and bacon but received biscuit's and gravy.. the complete opposite. We have been here for 2 hours. No one came to check on our food or even bring us a check. We had to walk up and ask for it just so we could leave. Not to mention the staff doesn't even know what table numbers to go to or which tickets are who's and has to come retake everyone's orders not just our table but all the tables around us..All 5 of us have horribly upset stomachs. I would never recommend anyone ever coming here. 130$ for horrible service, stomach aches, cold food and completely disorganized staff. DO NOT COME HERE. read more

I went in and had breakfaat a few weeks ago with my Mom and sister. Our food was really good, our waitress was Holly Wood and she was amazing, super nice and took care of us. The restaurant was clean and just a nice place to sit down and eat. we will be coming back soon and I hope we have the same waitress. read more

Super yummy food! Pretty pricey but great for sharing I recommend the huckleberry lemonade & milkshake!

Great food. Amazing service from Holly Wood and Ron. A lot of food for the price and the pies were so yummy.

Our meal took approximately 30 when the entire restaurant had less than a dozen patrons at the time. When the meal finally reached us, was less than satisfactory my wife had fish and chips, and it was cold, and overcooked. My meal also left a lot to be desired. Although the server tried to make up for the poor meal and service by offering us a pie at the end, experience, the entire experience was less than satisfactory. Typically, we have enjoyed the black bear diner in different locations, but this location has proven to not be up to standards in our opinion. Probably will not go back again! read more

We waited 30 minutes for service. Even longer for our order. The eggs over medium had incredibly runny egg whites. The country potatoes we ordered came as hash browns, which were not seasoned. The booth next to us had the same complaints. The kind waitress was clearly overworked and very apologetic. She mentioned that other tables had similar complaints. The manager comped our meal. They offered us a free replacement meal and free dessert. They've been open 12 days and maybe they're working out the kinks. read more

So we got here at 11:40 and it's now 12:26 and we still haven't got our food I will never eat here again unless I'm dragged here! This is not the first time this has happened! I really like the black bear diner but not in Chico ca update everyone that came in after us got their food before us we still have not got our food we just walked out I believe they are racist!!! read more

The wait staff and manager were absolutely amazing! I used an expired coupon, and my waitress Sammi was so helpful and understanding. She went out of her way to figure it out for me. I also want to thank the manager on duty who accepted my expired coupon. Hold on to this crew because they were great! It could've been a very embarrassing situation. I will definitely be going back and spreading the word. Thank you again to everyone! read more

Came in for brunch and the staff really made me feel like part of the family. The food was great and it was a very comfortable place to be. I will definitely be coming back. read more

Me and my 3 children had dinner tonight after we left the fair. I had the Steak dinner with green beans , My eldest daughter had the fish dinner and my two little cubs had Mac and cheese and the chicken fingers. The staff was so amazing! If you have a large family with small kids Sammie is a very good person to request! We didn't have to ask for refills, our food came timely, she was very observant to out needs! The food was very good and I really liked that I could see the staff members all helping each other! Defiantly great vibes! I really like how observant she was because I was not stressed out about waiting to get someone's attention because one of us needed something! I just actually got to enjoy my meal and that means a lot to a mom! Definitely recommend going there for dinner! read more

I Had the best service the other night from this local Diner. I think our server's name was Holly. My meal had a generous serving and was full of flavor. Breakfast for dinner is just yum. I never felt like I had to wait for anything as the waitress seemed to just know what I needed. The service here and food made my experience worth coming. If you're looking for that home cooked friendly little diner with an upbeat atmosphere then this is your place. read more

COREY !! wow !!! My first time to this location I had corey. they single single-handedly are the reason that I have came back so many more times. I notice in the restaurant, very chaotic energy as they seem to be understaffed, but corey handles all of that stress gracefully, always was so attentive to our care!! never was there not a cup refiled or empty pate in sight on our table, they got us our meals so swiftly and will all our detailed modifications! corey is the best worker at blackbear, if you need some heartfelt consumer service for you and the family request corey's section !! read more

Very slow service, and the food feels underwhelming for the price point. Diner staples are all on the menu, but the quality isn't better than any of the much cheaper diners in the area, and lower than many of the other franchise locations I've been to. Pretty disappointing, considering the hype this place had when it opened read more

Food is good but they are so understaffed it took forever to take our order & then forever to get the food. Probably won't be back.

Breakfast was good. My picky eaters had choices they actually liked. Service was kind and efficient. Just a little pricey.

Way to expensive for what you are getting. We go the very minimum and it was through the roof. Definitely better places to go for breakfast.

So this is my first review on yelp. This morning was the third time I've had breakfast there and decided to write this review in hopes that the owner/management might make some needed improvements. I had high expectations for a new restaurant in town, particularly one that opened early for breakfast. The first time was only a few days after they opened, that was terrible. Eggs over medium had very runny whites, bacon was barely cooked, got a huge biscuit but no butter or anything. Even thought they were overstaffed with 3 servers and 1 hostess working at 6:30 in the morning. It took a long time to get food, coffee refills, etc. Then when I'd finished eating it took 10-15 minutes to get my check. Oh there were only 2 other tables seated at this time. Second try, probably 3 weeks later. I figured by now they would have the kinks worked out. Wrong! How can a professional cook not know how to cook eggs over medium? I'm not an extremely picky eater but when there is almost as much runny white as yolk, that's not over medium. Still bacon almost to uncooked to eat. Now only 1 waitress on duty again around 6:30 in the morning, I'd have been much better off serving myself. What a disappointment. Well maybe one more try 1/29/23 6:00 and I'm hungry nothing at home I want to cook. Had a great waitress! I've seen her working at other restaurant in Chico and Paradise in the past. So with my previous experience I know it would be foolish to order fried eggs so I tried the scramBowl, big serving, not much meat and at least a1/2 cup of pickled jalapenos ( a little to much ) So good waitress, OK food..... But, Loud Rap music coming from the kitchen, easily heard anywhere in the restaurant. With lyrics that were very much unsuitable for children and hopefully most adults. The only reason I give it 1 star is because of the waitress I had this morning, if not for her it rates 0. I'll never go back! read more

Worst service ever got here at 11:20am with a 20min waiting time and sat down at 11:35 didn't get my order taken till 12:00 and didn't get our food 1:15pm wtf read more

Long wait time for food. Food didn't come out at the same time, so there was additional wait times between our family getting their meals. Some food came out cold, so had to send things back. Many things were forgotten that we needed to ask for. Overall things were over priced. Will not return. read more

I've tried going here three times. The first time, the service was decent and the food was okay, although not particularly special. The next two times I tried to go there (including today) the staff didn't even acknowledge or seat me. I don't believe the management staffs the restaurant sufficiently to service customers in a timely manner. read more

Service to seat you was very slow .They acted like they did not want you there. After a long time to get a table they finally took me to a table. After sitting at the table for a long time someone said sorry for the long wait ( they were not busy at all) they said they would be with me shortly. After another period of time I gave up and left. never order anything because nobody ever showed up to take the order. read more

So we have been here for over an hour and still no food. My husband asked our waiter where it was an she said "I entered it late." Needless to say we are still waiting. Update: 30 min later we got our food and was very disappointed. Husbands burger was very undercooked, my fish was cold in the middle, and the grilled cheese was literally just toast and cheese in the middle not melted. We tried to give the place the benefit of the doubt but it's not worth it. Btw a busboy also told us that the dishwashers are the cooks and our waitress was talking about killing herself. I really hope she wasn't being serious. Never going back here again even if you paid me. read more

Lady up front was rude told me it would be a 5 minute wait there were lots of open tables waited 10 minutes and walked out

We had the best lunch today and had the most AMAZING service from our server "Max". She did an incredible job!

We went to Black Bear in Chico for the first time this evening and were immediately shocked by the ridiculously inflated prices. I heard a rumor that the Chico location jacked up the prices, and unfortunately, the rumor turned out to be true. While in the restaurant, I compared prices online with the original Mt Shasta Black Bear location, and the Chico prices were drastically higher. Chico had the Papa Bear chicken fried steak breakfast and dinner priced at $24.99. The website for other locations had it listed at $15.99. Other menu items were marked up in a similar manner. To top it off, my chicken fried steak was overcooked and dry. The service was excellent, but it could not overcome the inflated prices and mediocre food. I complained about the price gouging to the waitress, and she confirmed that the Chico location does indeed jack up the prices and they have received so many complaints that the management had decided to make some small changes. I ended up being charged approximately $21.99 for my dinner, but i am unsure if I received a discount because i complained, or if they are actually going to change the prices on the menu. I have always loved Black Bear, but unless there are major changes, this is the first and only time i will step foot in this location. Someone recently commented on my post and said Black Bear lowered their prices but had not updated all of their menus. This is true, but they only lowered the prices by a couple dollars. They are still nowhere close to matching the lower prices at most other Black Bear Diners read more

Went for lunch. I had the Tri-Tip dip sandwich with fries. The sandwich was very good. I like the au jus a little salty and this was perfect. The fries. OMG. There was a mountain of them, fresh, hot, and golden brown. Now I'm old time Chico and I thought the prices were a little high, but then I remembered it was minimum wage $15.00 and recession times. The restaurant is very nice looking with cute bears and bear foot prints all-around. There were cute little pies for sale in the front next to the check out. So the best part was the server. She was super friendly and the food came out quick. The tip was well worth it. I 'll be going again for the chicken fried steak. They are enough for two meals. read more

So, the food didn't make us sick... but that's about the most positive I can be. As a new restaurant we tried them multiple times so they could get the kinks worked out... it didn't happen. From inattentive service, not getting all the food that is supposed to come with my order according to the menu and then having the waitress disappear never to return... not even with a check after 45 min, and just generally ignoring our table; to the food just being bland and boring- I cannot recommend the Black Bear diner in Chico. We were so bummed as we really like the Black Bear Diner we have been to before. Most of the reviews on here are accurate - they are slow, inattentive, unhelpful and the food doesn't make up for it. read more

Our lunch today was really good. The tomato bisque was very good. My husband had the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes with green beans. The meat was the size of plate! He said it was very good. The service was spot on. KariAnn was a great waitress. We will definitely be back!! read more

Waited 30 mins @ our table for any kind of service, recognition, acknowledgement,, offer of beverage,, but to no avail. As we departed, the table behind us also decided to leave as they had been ignored for an hour, even after speaking to a manager. I love Black Bear Diner, and was so happy to see the Chico location open up- but the front of the house needs to figure out customer service real quick, or sadly, I won't be returning. As we departed and handed the menu back to the hostess, we did get an insincere "sorry". read more
