Visited April 15th..see receipt. This location is in Chico and has indoor and outside seating. Great location within the Chico Mall ( marketplace ) Stopped in for a late breakfast after shopping at the mall. I had the lighter breakfast with pancakes and 2 thick cut bacon slices and a scrambled egg. I really liked the bacon as it was crispy as ordered! Everything was really good! My friend got Joes hobo omelete with a ton of crispy hash browns. It also came with a biscuit and for 99 cents more you get the gravy on top. The portion was huge and everything was really good! Plenty of leftovers! They also have some yummy looking desserts and pies! They serve beer and wine as well as mimosas. It's cutely decorated with bears. Waitresses were friendly and order came out quickly ( thanks Monique)! I will definitely come back when in Chico!

OK, looks like I've been on a Black Bear Diner kick here a little bit. I was just at another location and had a great experience. I'm in Chico for a little bit and found there's a Black Bear here. The onion rings I was really impressed with last, so we decided to get a whole side order for around $8 bucks. It arrived before our entrees, of the patty melt and the bacon cheeseburger salad. I guess i was expecting a bug mound of onion rings with the full appetizer order, so I was a little underwhelmed with the portion, but it tasted good anyways. I found you can substitute say fries off a burger or sandwich for the onion rings no charge, which I find rare in restaurants that you can get onion rings no extra charge. I'll just get the onion rings that way next time. My patty melt was mos fab and actually cooked med rare as ordered! Hardly any place cooks as I order, normally you just get well done no matter how you order a burger. My friend's bacon cheeseburger salad was really good, that was my choice if I didn't get the patty melt! I'll still come to Black Bear Diners, I'll just get onion rings instead of fries. Service was fine for our visit as well.

Good food Big foot chicken fried steak- this meal you get to choose soup or salad, I chose salad. Then you get to choose 2 sides, I chose green beans and toast. it was a big steak and did take me a lot of bites. Was super nice and hot when it came out but cooled down pretty quickly. Knife that was given was really sharp. White gravy was white gravy, lacked flavor imo. It was an alright steak, took a lot of bites but wasnt as much as I expected. Salad- waiter will ask what dressing you want, from what I remember, he mentioned balsamic vinegar, thousand island and a few others. I chose thousand island, was surprisingly good ha ha. Maybe cause it came out first and I was slightly hungry, was refreshing and nice to snack on before the meal. Tomatoes were so good. And every other ingredient tasted really fresh. Garlic parmesan toast- this came with the big foot, was alright, toast is toast Green beans and bacon- also came with big foot, was pretty flavorful. Felt like eating the ingredients from a soup. The little soup at the bottom was super salty. Huckleberry ice cream- was alright. Quality was similar to store bought ice cream. With bits of ice. Not really what I'd expect from a restaurant. But I guess with such a cheap price, it makes sense. Definitely wasnt the highest quality. Didnt go to a restaurant to get store bought quality ice cream with ice. Like actually store bought better cause theres no ice. There was so much at the bottom. Nothing I cant chew through but not something you'd want in ice cream Vanilla ice cream- my friend got this and she said there wasnt as much ice as the huckleberry. To me, it also does look better than the huckleberry. Rueben sandwich- my friend got this and she said, "The garlic toast was great and I'm happy the waiter guy suggested using it as the bread for the sandwich" and "I wish there was more of the non-corned beef in the sandwich tho, but that's just my preference" Extra Theres a juke box Waiters nice We paid at the counter idk if its just cause we split the bill. Ambiance was really nice, comfy chairs and well decorated Nice place but idk if Im gonna crave to go back so 5/5

We ordered online. The chicken fried steak was not quite ready when I arrived. After a few minutes, the food was given to me and I quickly drove it back to the hotel. The chicken fried steak was an extremely thin hamburger patty that was breaded and then deep fried. The steak came with some gravy that did not help too much. It came with a baked potato and vegetables. The baked potato was probably the best part of the meal. Their breakfasts are much better than their dinners. No to the chicken fried steak.

Hobo omelette, and potatoes

Kind of hit and miss at this restaurant sometimes good sometimes not so good. Today the omelette was good potatoes were kind of undercooked and bland. Today Should have been an IHOP day. Service was good

Hobo omelette

Today's food, which I Received in a timely matter, was hot My waitress was friendly and attentive. Much improved over my last experience where half the items on my plate were cold, and the coffee was lukewarm. The service was very slow and it took about 45 minutes to get my order.

(Make sure to ask one of the employees about the hanging coffee mugs!) What really stood out was the service. The servers worked together seamlessly, refilling drinks, topping off coffee, bringing requested extras, and checking in with guests. Definitely a well-oiled machine! As a solo diner, I had the opportunity to sit back and observe, and I was genuinely impressed. Every interaction seemed friendly, heartfelt, and professional. What a great combination! The restaurant itself is a sweet, unpretentious little diner. Pretty packed for a Tuesday morning, but I happened to arrive at just the right time and was seated without a wait. Coffee wasn't great but I did drink two cups so I probably shouldn't complain. :) On their menu, it states "We are proud of our large servings, so sharing a meal with an extra plate +.75. Half portions of omelettes and scrambles are available, price varies." Great option for me but pricewise, it's only $1.50 less. Something to consider. I ordered the Mexican Omelette, filled with green chiles, tomatoes, green onions, and Jack cheese, then topped with salsa and sour cream. The salsa was delicious and full of flavor, although a wee bit overpowering. It became the dominant flavor, and I found myself missing the green chiles and melty Jack cheese that I was looking forward to. That said, everything worked well together, and I'd absolutely order it again, just with the salsa on the side! Perfectly crispy hash browns and toasty English muffin rounded out this hearty breakfast. Delicious diner breakfast and incredible service!

We held the door for an elderly couple leaving as we entered, so for the sake of argument let's say we crossed their threshold at exactly 1:30 pm. "Hostess" ( college girl with messy hair under a baseball cap) immediately informs us they are CLOSED. No hello no greeting at all, just and abrupt , "We are closed." Huh. Sign says 2 pm?!!! She kinda shrugs us off with a parting comment, "we stop seating at 1:30." News to me, we've been coming here for five plus years and always between 1:30 and 2:00 pm. Never ever had a problem or had anyone tell us about this 1:30 pm seating rule. Ok. But I show her my phone. "it's 1:30 now" and she just shrugs and says sorry. Disappointed, we cruise over to The Farmers Skillet located a few miles away in Chico on Rio Lindo. We strolled in at 1:50 pm, noting they also close at 2 pm. I ask politely if we are too late even though our hostess already has two menus in her hand and a smile on her face. "Not at all," she exclaims and then says "Welcome". Service there was warm, and unhurried. The Roost could learn a lesson here. If your 24/7 policy is to stop serving half an hour prior to closing then it should be posted, and door locked maybe? I know Deja Vu (also in Chico, on the Esplanade) closes at 2 pm and they have the CLOSED sign up with door locked at 1:45 pm. We shan't be returning. Very disrespectful and unnecessary. IF in fact that IS the policy of this diner and not just the whim of a lazy student/hostess then we should still have been seated. It was 1:30 pm as we entered. Shame on management. Know your staff and make sure they are operating with YOUR agenda and priorities, not theirs.

I had reviewed the menu online and it made my mouth water so I had a pretty good idea. We were going to enjoy it. Indeed we did. I ordered the onion burger, and my wife ordered the jalapeño cheddar burger. We advised The server that we would be sharing our burgers when she brought them out. She had them arranged nicely for us as is shown in the photo I am posting. Both burgers were absolutely excellent. My wife and I were both totally impressed. We especially liked that. They have a condiment bar where you add your own extras. It's a good one too! Besides the burgers, we ordered sweet potato fries and a peanut butter cookie. The sweet potato fries were excellent. We ate every single one. The peanut butter cookie was out of this world. It even had little peanut butter cups on it. Fortunately, we split it otherwise we would both be totally ashamed of ourselves. The service was absolutely spectacular. Our server and the manager or owner open, parentheses not sure which) parentheses made a point to come by our table and make sure everything was to our liking. The friendliness is a big issue for us. The diner is decorated in a very attractive way. It is perfect for where it is located. I should have taken more photos of the inside. So if I was basing they review on food alone it's an easy 4 to 4.5 stars. Service was lacking. I arrived first and took a small table in the very back corner. When the waiter came by I let them know I was meeting a friend I hadn't seen in over a year and we were planning a long lunch. It was a Saturday afternoon and not busy. My guest arrived and the sever didn't come back for at least 10 min. But ok. No biggie. We ordered a soda and an iced tea. When those arrived we ordered food. My tacos came quickly and then we sat, looking at my food while we waited for the other entrée, the burger. 10 minutes later it shows up served by another server, no explanation or even acknowledgement that it took 10 minutes between me being served and my companion being served. Anyway our server was MIA for the rest of our stay. No offer of a refill for our beverages, no asking if the food was ok. Nothing. We stayed about 2 hours total and my normal policy is to double the tip because I have taken a table for about twice as long as normal. Unfortunately service was sub par. Oh and tea was incredibly strong not in a good way.
