Love Black Bear. Been going to BBD all over since the 80's. They are usually good. Went to Auburn with family Father's Day evening. I got the Cajun salmon... cook didn't know how to cook it. It came out like overdone catfish. Several other dishes weren't up to par either. Hope they get it together before we go back. read more

I loved the chicken fried steak breakfast very big proportion . My cousin doesn't like breakfast so she had a patty melt which she enjoyed The food arrived promptly the server Rudy was very efficient and made sure our coffee was keep full. My husband and I had a great experience at Black Bear Diner last night, and a big part of that was our server, we think his name was Tony? He was friendly, attentive, and made us feel genuinely welcomed from the moment we sat down. He checked in at all the right times, made sure everything was correct, and kept things moving smoothly without ever making us feel rushed. the server had a great attitude, was knowledgeable about the menu, and handled everything with ease. even when it got busy. It's always nice when a server clearly cares about their guests, and he absolutely did. He made our meal more enjoyable and left a great impression. I was in the Auburn area and was craving breakfast food even tho it was late afternoon. My dad suggested Black Bear Diner and even though I wasn't in the mood I agreed. This location is near HWY 80 and has ample parking. We walked in and were greeted immediately, and seated at a booth overlooking 3 large carved bears. They serve breakfast all day, and they have an amazing array of items on their menu. I ordered a California omlette that came with avocado, cheese and mushrooms. It also had a choice of sides and a biscuit. I swapped out the potatoes for fruit and the hubs ordered a hamburger and fries, my dad wanted to try the Joe's omlette. These servings were large, well worth the price unlike many other places (shrinkflation anyone?) The burger had a pile of fries, the crispy battered kind and they were delicious! Dad's omlette was huge with an even bigger pile of potatoes and 4 pieces of toast. My omlette was a beauty, half the size of my plate and stuffed with grilled mushrooms and cheese. It was sooooo good, fluffy eggs with all that gridded goodness. But the biscuit - oh wow. How did I not know their biscuits were humongous and golden brown? A few bites in I gave up, but it was fluffy and slightly salty and fantastic. Everything was great. Sure it was a rich meal, but I took home a box for another meal. Black Bear has solid food, a clean restaurant, and efficient and friendly staff, I will definitely drop by again. read more

Stopped by to get a dinner salad to go. Was pleasantly greeted by Breanna once I entered. She took my order and was also going to prepare my salad to go. She did a great job in making a fresh and presentable and tasty salad. Accompanied by CornBread muffins. She included my dressing on side and utensils and carefully packed it all. There was a major accident on 80 and the highway closed. The staff at Black Bear was overwhelmed with people stopping off to eat while waiting out the traffic woes. It didn't help that the rain was heavy and that they were understaffed. Still, they were pleasant, friendly, and as quick to serve as anyone could expect. Enjoyed a wonderful dinner experience on a Saturday night. Although we don't live nearby, my parents do, so while visiting them this weekend, the six of us thought we'd try them out for dinner as we normally only consider them for breakfast. Boy are we glad we did! We had incredible service, from the sweet gentleman who seated us after politely telling us a family had just left so it would take about 5 minutes for them to clean and ready the table, to our amazing waitress who was so genuinely nice and sweet and super efficient (I wish I got her name - she had tattoos on her arm). It was the best experience! The food was absolutely amazing! The portions were HUGE and everything was prepared deliciously. The restaurant was clean and peaceful with a good hometown feel. We were sad to see the restaurant wasn't super crowded for a weekend night, but definitely will be coming back to try more items on their extensive dinner menu! Been here few times I do have to say everyone is always kind and the restaurant is clean, so that's a plus! Unfortunately today did not hit the mark. My salad was lacking to say the least, I asked for a different kind of cheese and just didn't get any. The fried chicken was grossly over cooked. I came into black bear diner today because I had breakfast on my mind for lunch. I was still unsure if coming here because my last experience with the crazy woman that worked there. However, I did go in after that and before this and with both hers & my luck, she was my server... with professionalism in mind, we both had a great service. As of yesterday, I was slightly at ease going in since I was there after that, but that small feeling does linger, however I had great service and amazing food! I came in with my friend and we were sat right away by Nova. She was very sweet. Our server turned out to be Karen and she was just as wonderful. We placed our order(and I take forever ordering) and I asked her about the eggs Benedict and the Cobb salad. She told me those two items were her favorite because the Benedict has some of the best Hollandaise sauce around and the Cobb salad is amazing with the crispy chicken tossed in Buffalo sauce. So I took her up on her suggestion of the Cobb salad and my friend got the club sandwich with only turkey & bacon. They even gave her extra turkey because she didn't want the ham. When our food arrived, it was magazine beautiful. The cob salad was laid out so beautifully with the ranch dressing on the side. My friends turkey sandwich looked good, too. Only suggestion is that I needed a bigger plate. This salad really makes 2-3 meals with its size. I liked the idea of the crispy chicken tossed in Buffalo sauce. As Karen said, it went great with the ranch I had on the side. After a delicious lunch, boxed up the rest of my salad. We paid at the register and I got to talk to Karen while my friend used their restroom. I still have yet to try their weekend specials, but I look forward to doing so. It's been a while since we've been there. Each time we've gone back thinking the service would be better, we've left committed to never coming back. Worst thing is, we were looking forward to this black Bear restaurant opening in our neighborhood. Some of our negatives: Delayed service without knowing who and when our server was; server saying they were out of cream for the coffee, and it turned out they had some in the refrig. Their food still is good, except the bear claws which are terribly cheaply made now. At least that's my experience. You might give them a try in case their service has improved. read more

The portions are huge. This morning I ordered the lite portion, which was still enough for two meals. I could only eat half of it. The has browns were very good. However, twice now, I have ordered a slice of pie, and both times the pie was too sweet. I have a sweet tooth, so you know it had to be really sweet. They were two different kind of pies.
