I was looking forward to what it may have to offer. Once I arrived, it then turned into the Twilight Zone. It was Friday afternoon (in a tourist town) and the door was unlocked so I went in. I can't quite name the feeling, but it was surreal. It was pretty dark but there was a group of 3-5 people and a bar tender at the bar. So I approach and the bar tender who in all honesty seemed what I would describe as "crossfaded" ( drunk and high) looks at me and says "I'm sorry but I have to serve everyone I already have here and I can't serve you". I look down and there were open beer and what not and like a said people in the bar... I didn't argue but in shock I said ok well thanks... trying to think of any possible reason they would only be able to seat and serve 1 "group" at a time. Unless for some weird legal reason like having lost a license or something I couldn't come up with one. There were no signs posted about the "rules" either. Bewildered, I post this review. read more

Service was absolutely terrible. The female bartender was incredibly rude. My fiancé and I are both 21, after grilling us over our ID's she proceeded to slam our drink down and walk away immediately. After sitting down she came over and told us to move cause a chair was causing a "fire hazard", as we were moving she stands there watching and says "pick it up". Very unwelcoming. Would never recommend this place. They seriously need new service and maybe they would get more customers. Was pleasantly surprised. From the reviews I read and the sleepy Sunday vibe of Blue Ridge was concerned, but our server, the only one that day, was excellent and really went the extra mile to work with us. And the food was good! We ate outside in the deck because we had our German Shepherd, Major, with us. They had a bowl for water and he laid contentedly in the shade of the umbrella . My SIL told me the beer was good and my husband and being GF, I really enjoyed the Bold apple cider on draft! Both he and I had the single sausage plate with the potatoes salad and sauerkraut. I'm of German decent, was good, not greasy. A very different take on potato salad, more like mashed potatoes with bacon, still good. A fun bar located right downtown. Not a bad spot to drop out of the shopping excursion to grab yourself a cold one. They stay open slightly later than the rest of downtown establishments. The locals that were there during our visit were engaging and fun to chat with. The owner is good people and accommodating to the customer. Our bartender and server made this visit a 5-Star experience. I never caught his name but he was real sweet, just the right amount of attentive and most importantly engaging. But he became the real MVP when my clumsy boyfriend spilled his beer all over the floor! He gave him a beer on the house and said "accidents happen" smiling as he mopped up the mess. We came at a good time because this place gets fuckin' lit on the weekends- around 2:30 pm, just before the afternoon/evening rush. Food was delicious, actually. I try to avoid German food because it's too heavy, but the 2-sausage plate we shared with wild boar and pheasant, were delightful. The boar had cranberries mixed in, so it was sweet yet robust, flavorful. It smelled like a Ye Old Tavern, so that was dope. Also had me a heckin' big pretzel, which was delicious! Service was subpar. Our bartender was certainly busy, but that doesn't excuse a lackadaisical attitude. My $10 drink (momma bear) was supposed to come with a sugared rim, but didn't. Not a huge deal, but just added to the overall service. We order 2 pretzels along with 2 sausage platters. The sausage platters came out first (about 20-25 minutes after our 15 minute wait to place the order) and our pretzels came out 10-15 minutes after that (my friends husband and mine were almost done eating by the time my friend and I received our pretzels). Blue ridge is always super crowded on the weekends so we knew where ever we went there would be a wait. Though we just wanted some beers so stopped in here. We ordered at the bar and struck up a nice conversation with the bartender and cook. They gave food recommendations then we ordered and sat down. The food was delicious and pretty quick. We didn't leave a thing on our plates. The Bloody Mary was also very good. We decided to go back again for drinks on Saturday. Again it was very busy and the kitchen was closed. So we chatted and grabbed drinks at the bar and sat outside on the back patio. Again we had a really nice time. I know the reviews are mixed. Maybe give it a go. Just take into consideration that it's a tourist town and they will probably be busy. ALSO GET THE BOLOGNA SANDWICH :) read more

Misnomer. Don't be fooled, this is just a standard bar, not a Biergarten. Only had about 6 beers on tap. Was told there was no food being served (it was a Sunday on Labor Day weekend). Other than that, just a typical dive bar. Friendly service, cold drinks, can't ask for much more than that. read more

Just your typical dive bar. Staff was awesome and attentive. We didn't try their food but it sounded and looks good. They have some food drink options and a menu in case you don't know what exact drink you wanna try! But also, they had some dogs running around which I personally loved! We only stayed for one beer but liked the atmosphere and would've stayed for another if we had time! read more

So I went in to order a giant hot pretzel to go. The place was packed. I waited for a few minutes at the bar to be helped. The pretzel was $7. $7?!?!?! it better be delish! I was offered a glass of water, but did not receive it until my pretzel was done 8 minutes later. It was huge! Huge and frozen in some parts. Blah! The "mustard dipping sauce" was just plain old mustard. I was expecting the German sweet and spicy mustard. We dropped into this unassuming cabiny bar while waiting on our table at Harvest. We were welcomed so warmly, we decided to stay for dinner. We had the pretzel with beer cheese dip to start. I could eat these for breakfas, lunch and dinner. The pretzel was hot, chewy and salty. Definitely worth a visit in and of itself. We also had beer brat and the potato soup. Both were great. My only wish is that they had a broader menu. There were a handful of vegetarian options, but not many. I will say that it's better to have a limited menu and do it well, than a huge menu where everything comes from a can. Unfortunately our experience in this small establishment was not a good one. The woman behind the bar yelled across the room to ask us what she could get us and when we got our chips and nacho cheese I was thoroughly disheartened. I could have pulled them out of a bag of Tostitos and poured this cheese out of a jar. And I would be really surprised if that is not exactly what they did. The cheese was not even hot. The beer selection was also very underwhelming. The pretzel was big, but just average. Nothing spectacular at all, including the service. First, the positive. The big German pretzel was great. Tasted fresh and served hot with delicious beer cheese. The people in our group who got the Reuben said it was very good, as was the sauerkraut. I had the chili, which was tasty enough and probably would have been downright delicious if I hadn't left off the Fritos and the sausage. I had a taste of my brother's buffalo sausage; It had a lot of good flavor. Unfortunately, the German potato salad was bland and lacked flavor; same story with the cole slaw. One person in our group got the chicken and cheese quesadilla, which appeared to have been microwaved - the tortilla was limp and not at all crispy. What was really the worst part of the experience was the fact that we waited for nearly 2 hours for our food; drink refills were never offered. When our food finally arrived, it was delivered without silverware. The owner told us when she took our order that she had a server quit that day and they were short-handed. I don't know if she was trying to cook and serve or what. I had to hunt someone down to get our check and when the server brought over an iPad to check us out, she had to ask what we had ordered. It's a good thing we are honest people. While they offered an apology for the wait, there was no offer for a discount or anything to make up for the long wait and inattentive service. It's clear that this place knows how to cook and serve German food, but I'd steer clear of anything else on the menu, and hope you can get that good German food in a reasonable time. read more

I have never experienced a restaurant of such poor quality and service. I consider myself to be quite the authority on German cuisine (toot toot) and this place is bottom of the barrel. The beer selection was abysmal and their flagship brews were American. The food was absolutely terrible. What they call schnitzel is nothing more than store bought pork cutlets from Ingles on 76 poorly coated and fried in dirty oil until burnt. The Jägerschnitzel (which was misspelled on the menu) was a joke. They brought out the "hunter's sauce" as it's called on the menu in a plastic cup and by the time it's reached your table it's congealed. The "German" potato salad was clearly store bought and reheated. The pretzels are NOT made in house, the telltale sign was on the bottom of the pretzel (factory conveyor belt marks). The mustard that's brought out...from ingles as well. Tasteless and lazy is the black bear biergarten. Very disappointing and disgusting. Avoid at all costs and go anywhere else. read more

Where to begin.... Second trip here, against my better judgement. First trip, the food was fair to poor, but they had one of the best import beer selections in Blue Ridge. Second trip, we just stopped off at the bar and had a beer and pretzel. The beer list has dwindled. Domestic bottles reign supreme. They were out of most of the good German beers that lured me back. I wish I had sat at the bar first... before spending my money here to eat. I watch item after item being placed in the microwave before serving... atleast hide the microwave! The bar gets a four; the restaurant a one. Of all of the places we've gone in Blue Ridge, we ALWAYS have the most fun at Black Bear's bar. Food might have been decent if we hadn't watched the "chef" use his fingers to place the sausage in and out of the microwave. Come on, use gloves at least .... Platter was described as German potato Salad, kraut, coleslaw rye bread and sausage. Ordered and was then told out of German potato salad and offered two weak subs, when food arrived, there was no slaw or kraut. Asked about it. Answer came back from kitchen they were out of slaw and forgot kraut. Reached for mustard to find my choice of three generic store brands.
