This was so last minute (the day before Thanksgiving) many restaurants I contacted weren't even open (or they chose not to answer the phone). Full order not received - billed for missing items - even after being told invoice would be adjusted. Placed an order for my daughter's bridal shower. Since it was on a Sunday the order had to be more than $1,000 for delivery. We made sure we met the minimum. One of the main reasons we picked them was the assorted breakfast pastry trays they list on their menu - we ordered two. Order was placed several weeks before the event; not last minute. Catering company changed the delivery time for an hour before we originally contracted for. We accommodated the change. The breakfast pastry trays were NOT delivered - told they "forgot to bake them". We were not informed until food was delivered. We had to scramble to replace the missing items at the last minute. We never received a call or communication about the missing food - just the delivery time change. Called and was promised a credit for the trays. Just received a final invoice - trays not received are still on the final bill and credit card has been charged for them. Mistakes happen, I get that. Had we been informed of the issue as soon as they knew we would not have been left scrambling. Had the invoice been corrected as promised I would not be so disappointed & upset. Cannot recommend this company based upon our experience with them. read more

Absolutely fabulous. Bittersweet catered a cruise for 180 guests on the Cherry Blossom Sternwheeler today. They did a great job. I am not experienced in working with caterers - Jason was easy to deal with, explained items well, and guided us through the process. The food was excellent. As usual, I liked the appetizers more than the main dishes but enjoyed the deserts the most. Just the way I am wired. The catering staff was excellent - attentive but not overbearing. My experience with Bittersweet Catering was excellent. I selected Bittersweet because they had solid reviews, the menu was very easy to review online, and they had many marked gluten-free options. Still, I was calling last minute - 9:30 AM on a Friday for an event the next day, Saturday - and didn't expect them to be able to help me. Sayunda answered the phone, assured me Bittersweet could handle the order, and even helped walk me through options and make selections. She was fantastic. The order arrived on time, and delivery was very smooth with friendly service (I'm sorry I did not get that lovely woman's name). The food was good - not overly fancy, very approachable, the flavors were on point, and everything was fresh. They even threw in disposable flatware and buffet cards. I had lunch here a few years back when it was a walk in cafe with my 6 year old daughter. The owner, a bald, grumpy, Romulan face from Star Trek looking muchacho with a bad attitude really laid into my little girl for spilling her soda and forced her to clean it up yelling something like;" do you know how much those floors cost !!??" she started to cry but told me later that the man's face was "weird" and scary and that's what made her cry. I wanted to kick his ass right there but did not want to set a bad example to my little girl or get arrested for assault! thankfully they went out of business at that corner spot i'm sure the reason being the owner...we'll years later I went to a party and lo and behold, catering by Bittersweet. the sandwich i ate was kind 'a stale, tasted like a Safeway sandwich...anyway next day BAM ! serious diarrhea ! it was so darn bad I had to go to an urgent care and get some antibiotic's...they said I was lucky to be alive after all that bacteria in my belly...they probably recycle the food the nurse told me. my primo wrote a google review just recently after I did because he loves my little girl so much and was very angry about it after we told him what had happened those years past. in Response to the "owner", I am having a hard time understanding , you say you are the owner , your face is the weird faced man who yelled at my girl but the name is not the same as him, his name says Jody and you are Jeffrey .A therefore this does not add up. My only challenge with Bittersweet was locating them in Alexandria, they're located within an alley so I kept driving past the location. I think the cupcakes are the tastiest of any I've ever had, and as my husband pointed out, they have the perfect ratio of cupcake to icing (a most difficult feat!). We cannot say enough about how awesome Bittersweet Catering was for us. We hosted a party for 70 at our home, and Rachel led the planning and execution for our function. The menu options were amazing, and we quickly settled on a diverse menu of passed and stationed hors d'oeuvres. My amazing wife, Taylor Kiland, picked the menu in conjunction with Rachel's recommendations...and it turned out so very well. The crab dip was fantastic, the chicken dish incredible - and the mini-quiches and other choices were beautifully done and presented. We set up a bar outside - Barack manned the bar in chilly weather, and had an uncanny knack for anticipating what people would want. So fast and efficient. I'd like to make an observation regarding Bittersweet - one of my favorite companies in the DC area (and has been for many, many years). I note that Yelp quarantines many positive reviews (I just counted 15!). When I queried my favorite sales rep about this, they tell me Yelp says that they are 'deemed suspicious' This despite Bittersweet's own internal surveys showing the exact same feedback. So recently I made a 1/2 sheet cake catering order through Bittersweet and I cannot express my gratitude enough for how much of a great experience I had! The ordering process was very fast and efficient, the pick up was also done very fast and efficient (finding the place might seem a little tricky but its right next to a SweetGreen shop, in an alley with free parking as well). The cake was made for my honor society and the flavors of the chocolate/white chocolate mousse were so decadent... my words cannot do justice! I threw a surprise birthday party for my boyfriend at Port City Brewery and am so happy that Bittersweet Catering was on their list of approved caterers. Lee and Jody are incredibly accommodating, and the whole process was just effortless! I communicated with the team entirely through email and was nervous about things turning out right, but in the end I really had nothing to ever worry about. You can pick your own menu a la carte (and there are many options to choose from) or have them suggest a line-up for you. The day of my event they arrived on time and set up everything very quickly. My personal favorites from the menu I selected were the crab and artichoke dip, the steak and chimichurri sauce, and the delicious lemon scented orzo! Rachel Capellari and her team did a fantastic job for a wedding on the Cherry Blossom riverboat. Rachel was very helpful and responsive from beginning until end. In fact, she did more the coordinating and planning of the seating arrangement than the venue staff did. The food tasted as great at the tasting as on the celebration day. Bittersweet chefs honored our request for them to learn and make West African fried plantains. Also, they eagerly served another West African snack that we brought for the reception. Bittersweet Catering catered a party for 90 people that we recently hosted and contributed much to its success. Rachel Capellari and her staff helped us at each step, from planning through final clean up, taking care of many details that might otherwise have derailed an enjoyable evening. The food was exceptional (we are still getting compliments). Rachel and her staff worked seamlessly to help set the room up in a functional and tasteful way, to ensure that the hors d'oeuvres were ready for the early arrivers and were constantly replenished, that each guest had champagne ready for the toasts, that dinner was ready at the right time, that drinks were always available at the right temperature, and that the cake was sliced and ready at the right time. And, they quickly and thoroughly cleaned up and carried all the serving ware and rubbish--a major service since we had rented the room and needed to leave it as we found it. In addition to being professional and effective, the Bittersweet staff were very pleasant to work with.
