I had been here years ago and I remember liking the cupcakes at Lavender Moon, so I wanted to try them again when I was in old town recently. I got the lemon curd, Boston cream, s'mores, and red velvet. While they all tasted great, they were pretty dry. My favorite was probably the lemon curd. I wish they had signs up for the flavors of the cupcakes, but the worker was very nice and she gave a good rundown of the flavors. You walk in and the place is always clean you're always probably welcome and typically they have a high selection of delicious cupcakes. I love the fact that each staff person is more than willing to repeat all of the flavors in stock for each customer and you do not have to worry about being disappointed because the cupcakes are amazing. Wow -- this place ended up back on my radar while looking for hard-to-find organic food options in Alexandria. I finally stopped by and had a mixed experience. Funny enough, I came to Yelp to write about it and was stunned to see I actually wrote a review here 10 years ago. First, I assumed this was a new place because of how run-down it looks -- I am honestly shocked to find out they've been around for at least a decade. The cupcakes themselves didn't disappoint -- they were a bit drier than expected but still good, and tasted like they were made with real, fresh ingredients. I always try to support businesses that prioritize organic food, so it's great to see that claim emphasized. However, as I noted 10 years ago, there's still no visible signage in the shop indicating that their ingredients are organic or certified organic. I happened to call this weekend and was told over the phone that they use all organic ingredients, which convinced me to give it a try. But after 10 years, it's more than fair to expect clear, in-store confirmation of that. And a webpage? I've heard they use Polyface eggs (which is awesome), but again -- if the rest of the ingredients are up to the same organic standard, why isn't that listed anywhere? These days, the word "organic" gets tossed around in many ways, so transparency really matters. You've had 10 years to clarify this. Speaking of 10 years... the physical space is in rough shape as you can see in the pictures. The cupcakery is located in a small house in Old Town, and looks neglected. During my visit, there were gnats flying around, which might be hard to control with foot traffic, but it's still unappetizing. My kid was excited, so I stuck it out and bought a few, but if I had been alone, I honestly would've left. Some other personal gripes: charging a higher price for credit card purchases feels petty. I usually avoid businesses that do this, full stop. Also, handwritten price increases on the menu just look unprofessional -- have they been there for years, too? It takes two minutes to print a new menu. Things like this come across as sloppy or worse, greedy. All in all, I'm really happy to see (maybe?) organic cupcakes as an option in the area. That's a major plus. But considering my original review from 10 years ago and this recent underwhelming update after visiting, it seems like this is not a match that is meant to be. I can't say I'd recommend Lavender Moon as it stands now. I'd love to return someday -- but there needs to be real improvements in transparency, cleanliness, and presentation. For now, I'll stick to baking my own organic cupcakes -- at least I know exactly what's in them, and there are no credit card surcharges or gnats. read more

I've been wanting to try the cupcakes here since the first time I walked by their shop (which was closed for the day since they'd sold out already). However, I have to say I wasn't impressed. Maybe I'd hyped them up in my head, but they were not great. The cake was fine, nothing super special but not awful. Frosting...yikes. As a person whose favorite part of a cupcake is the frosting, I was pretty disappointed. I expect some cupcakes to always have cream cheese frosting (like carrot or red velvet) but it seems like all of theirs have cream cheese frosting...and it wasn't made well. It was too tangy and weepy from sitting out all day. Flavor aside, cream cheese frosting is not my go-to (read: I will not choose to eat it) so I guess it's a personal gripe that the flavors I chose (lemon curd, strawberry, Boston cream, and pinot cherry) all had it. Which then leads me to point out...two of those DEFINITELY do not work with cream cheese frosting, which made them kind of gross. A small note on the interior...not inviting. Very rundown, dimly lit. These are some of the best cupcakes in the area with lots of variations to choose from. Staff is friendly and helpful and are always willing to walk you through their selections. However a few things of matter: this place needs some tidying up because it feels like you are walking into some little girls messy doll house, Also the entrance is not all that welcoming and unless you really know what you're going in for, it feels like you are entering a trap house. There is also no online presence making it very hard to plan or order. You have to call or visit to know what are the options of the day and that is very inconvenient. I am very critical about cupcakes and bakeries because I am a baker myself. However, lavender moon really exceeded my expectations with their very moist cakes. I've gotten quite a few of their cupcakes and they have all been stellar. The one thing I would note is that most of their frosting contains cream cheese, so if you're not a cream cheese fan like my husband, then you will not like most of their frostings. Recently we tried to go here and they were closed even though their door showed it was during their open hours. I spoke to a nearby shop keeper who said that once the cupcakery runs out of cupcakes they close, regardless of the time. This was really frustrating since that isn't advertised and we had made a special trip. We happened to be nearby again a few days later and the cupcakery was open. We got 5 flavors of cupcakes including their gluten free option. Sadly all 5 were dissapointing and neither adult nor the teenager in our group finished a whole cupcake out of the 5 flavors. Had a sweet tooth and was looking for something good and to satisfy my craving. Stopped by this tiny place and it was really cute inside with a couple of tables set up if you wanted to eat right inside. I initially only wanted one, but after the young lady began telling us all the cupcakes, I ended up leaving with 4. The frosting was perfect!!!! I was only going to get the red velvet but ended up getting a sherbet or orange cream. I thought that the cupcake itself could've been more moist and the red velvet wasn't red it was brown which kept tripping me out. It was still good. read more

What I originally thought would be a bland experience ultimately was a high 3*. To start, it took me quite a while to find this cupcake shop on S Royal St. due to inconspicuous signage on the storefront. It was also after 7:30pm at night which made visibility worse. Upon entering the bakeshop it did not feel like I walked into a cupcake shop. The sale of cupcakes takes place in the rear of the shop however in the front of this store is a dimly lit sitting area with antique decor. The entrance of this shop gives no impression, whatsoever, of a bakeshop. Curious, I continued walking past the front sitting area, and came to the back of the shop where the cupcakes are sold. The representative I met was pleasant and assisted with describing all of what seemed to be 5-7 available cupcake flavors. With so few available flavors I purchased just about every flavor in an assorted dozen. The price of the cupcakes is approximately $3.50 per cupcake. I did sample a couple cupcakes in the car and immediately I recognized the cupcakes I received had been previously refrigerated and were not fresh because they were cold and the cake was firm. It wasn't until I got home and ate a cupcake the next day did the texture improve as the cake softened. The cupcake experience altogether was better the next day when I tried the cupcakes at room temperature. Overall the quality of the cupcakes is good. A few of the cupcakes had a cream cheese icing and I wouldn't be surprised if all of the cupcakes at this shop are topped with cream cheese icing. The icing is rich however I was a bit surprised how imbalanced the cream cheese ratio was in the icing. Leaning heavier on the cream cheese. My favorite cupcake of the flavors I sampled is the Hummingbird. This cupcake shop is a high 3* in my opinion considering all the circumstances I mentioned. They really should have little labels they can reuse and put near the associated cupcake because I can't remember what they tell me. These cupcakes were so fresh and so well priced!! The cupcakes are huge and only $4 per cupcake, which is a steal in the DC area. I got the boston cream cupcake, and the frosting was a little softer/creamy than I typically go for with frosting, but the flavor was spot-on. Same with the filling! We've been to old town for several years and never saw this cupcake place tucked away on a side street in old town. This place is bomb and the service is very polite and friendly. We haven't tried a ton of the cupcakes, the double Belgian and the Hummingbird were excellent though. The double Belgian chocolate is perfect for chocolate lovers. Let me start by writing the cupcakes I was able to purchase tasted very good. Though there was some disagreement on whether the flavor was vanilla or banana with a cream cheese frosting. Personally, I think they were a little bit on the small side for the price. What was most disappointing is -- I got to the shop around 5:15 PM on a Wednesday. And there were literally three cupcakes left on the cake stand. The shop was supposed to be open another 3 1/2 hours! Seems like the manager was a little short-sighted in their baking projections. Especially during the holidays. I would've loved to try some of the other flavors that I see on their Yelp page. The cupcake itself was pretty good, but the way cupcakes are handled is questionable. When you go up the employee tells the cupcake flavor verbally, which is 1. Time consuming -- they go over the flavour of the cupcakes to every single customer. This is very tedious and wasting time for everyone. 2. Unsanitary -- the employees are not wearing masks nor there are glass separators. Thus they are serving cupcakes that have been exposed to all the verbal explanation, that has risk of saliva contamination. 3. Confusing -- since there are no simple signs or labels to cupcakes, it's hard to memorize what flavour there are and have to go back and forth a lot. not very accessible to those with challenging hearing as well. All these issues can be solved if there's simple menu board or labels on cupcakes. I really hope they fix this part, since the cupcake is really good :) read more

A solid 3.5 stars. Tucked away in historic Old Town Alexandria, this cupcake shop is cute and worth a stop after dinner. When I arrived late in the evening, maybe an hour before closing, there were only 2-3 flavors left to choose from. I wish there were more flavors because I wanted to buy 2 but only liked 1 of the flavors available at that time. Service was good, there was only one employee working, but it wasn't busy so we were helped promptly. For the price, I felt the cupcakes were small compared to others I've gotten in DC. These left so much to be desired. The shop itself is very old and dim and messy. We got two cupcakes and it was disappointing. Cupcakes are my thing- i adore cupcakes from all over. This was the first time i actually took a bite of each one and we tossed them. The cake itself is super heavy and dense - almost like a scone crossed with an extremely dense muffin - but lack favor. They're are really bland. The icing equally lacks any dynamic flavor which is hard to do with icing. There is a counter with the cupcakes displayed. Lots of unique flavors as well as traditional ones are available. It was definitely hard to decide. I settled on red velvet and a chocolate cherry Pinot Noir. The red velvet wasn't as red as some others. I'm ok with that since it's only red food coloring most times. On a whim I decided to order cupcakes for my friend's birthday party. I had never heard of lavender moon but based on yelp reviews and proximity I decided to give them a try. I ordered 1 dozen cupcakes for pickup the next day. I ordered an assortment which included 6 different flavors. I appreciated the option to select whatever I wanted and the recommendations offered by phone. When I arrived I found a small business tucked into the streets of old town, dimly lit with minimal decor. If I didn't read reviews and call ahead I probably would have walked out because the place looked like it was going to closed down soon and didn't offer the most welcoming vibe. My order was ready and I was even able to add a few more for myself. The cupcakes were a HIT! They were perfectly moist either way cream cheese frosting and since our celebration was small there was plenty to share/try! I was very happy with this choice in a bakery. However I do think there is room for improvement. There cupcakes were sitting out in two baking racks they were not covered or protected from the elements of the world. Second some of the pleasantries I expect to receive from a business didn't exist here. Lastly, the woman working wasn't very friendly. It was like I was walking into someone's house. I walked around the corner & finally found the cupcake display. The cashier was in the back getting more cupcakes. They truly didn't have a lot to choose from. She went over the flavors & the only ones that seemed good to me were the chocolate & strawberry. I just wish she would have told me that this wasn't buttercreme icing. The strawberry cupcake had a tart cream cheese icing & the chocolate cupcake's icing just tasted like sugar. No butter flavor at all. They were VERY DENSE...very much like a muffin. The chocolate one tasted exactly like Otis Spunkmeyer muffins from the grocery store except these cupcakes didn't have the added chocolate chips inside them. I ended up scraping the icing off of it and eating the muffin by itself. We took a bite of the strawberry one & threw it away. I don't like cream cheese icing. I'm very disappointed.
