I was excited to try Bistrot Paul Bert as it has a lot of hype online and is known for it's steak au poivre (one of my favorite dishes). I was also a bit apprehensive though because when places do get a bit of hype, they can quickly go south. In this case I believe it was a good review in the New York Times two years ago that sent the tourists flocking an probably led to what I experienced last week...decent but not amazing food, and underwhelming service. We made reservations for 8pm on a weeknight about 2 weeks ahead of time. When we arrived, instead of sitting on the street or even in a room with a window, we were led to a room towards the back that was a bit stuffy and had a service station and wine cabinet in it. But everyone cannot sit on the sidewalk, I get it, so no big deal (even though I had a reservation far in advance). The food was decent: steak was not bad, sauce was quite good, appetizer of heirloom tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil was tasty. The dessert, Grand Mariner souffle, was good but not the amazing experience others have noted. The kir they served me before dinner was much sweeter than classic kir (which should be crisp and refreshing). If you like a moscato or port, this is probably right up your alley, but was definitely not traditional. I probably would have given a 4-star review if not for that fact that I just felt unwelcome and more like I was a burden than a customer. Yes, I know this is a bistrot and that the servers are busy and have many tables to serve, but this was something else. While in Paris, we dined almost exclusively at bistrot styles venues and never felt as if we were imposing on the servers to get what we needed. One of the 2 servers in our area seemed quite friendly, but unfortunately was not the one we were interacting with. The server who handled us really brought down the experience. Freaking delicious French grub! I just pulled this out of the Time Out Paris guide on its reputation, price and little photo. We did try to get into Frenchie and Le Comptoir but not a table to be had. The 3-course prixe fixe menu for 34 Euros offered at least 6-7 selections per course. I had the watercress and lardon salad accompanied by a perfectly poached egg (everything should come with chunky, crispy lardons and a poached egg!). For the main I had a huge pan roasted pork chop with a big layer of auto-basting fat (not to eat) with oven roasted potatoes and chestnuts. It was like eating for the very first time. Dessert I had a chestnut cream filled French macaroons. Why are American macaroons those spongy but delicious coconut thingies served around Passover?? The meal was amazing. I kind of forgot what my travel companion had as my meal got me kind of woozy and well you know hot it can get with us. Being non-French speaking was not a problem even though the menu board was entirely in French. Our waiter went over every detail of the menu including preparations in superb English. read more

When we got there but they told us we did not have reservations but instead had reservations at 6 Paul Bert their restaurant down the street. It took us 35 mins to get there so we walked down the street to 6 Paul Bert. We were in the first serving and they ran out of sirloin. So we had 1 sirloin medium and two filet med rare. They got it wrong so two people didn't get what they ordered. Everything was WAY to salty. The Meat, fish rice, potatoes were all way too salty. I could have eaten anything because all we tasted was SALT. The waiters were way too rushed to even ask a question. We had to ask for a wine menu after he asked about our drinks, hard to order without a menu. It was a major disappointment. Don't waste your money here. read more

This is a classic bistro that does traditional French dishes excellently. It's often booked up, so be sure you call in advance and get a reservation. I still think fondly of the dessert I had here, two giant macarons with fresh raspberries and fresh cream inside. Yum. They have a sign inside making fun of those who order their steak "well-done." Saignant (medium rare, "bleeding") is definitely the way to go! Gluten-free notes: Most traditional French dishes are naturally gluten-free. I really wanted to LOVE this place and I am sure if we had gone on any other day of the year, I would have. Unfortunately, we went on the day before they closed for summer holidays and we felt like it was us that stood between them and the beach. The tomato salad was delicious and fresh and the frites - outstanding! The waiter was lovely and suggested a wine that we were not so happy with and he felt so badly about it that he even apologized. Easily the greatest meal I have ever had, and it's not even close. We had the fixed price menu with pigeon and pate to start, steak frites for main, and soufflé/ cheese plate for desert. The service was impeccable and they made us feel like it was an honor to serve us, even though we are just two 23 year old Americans. Every morsel on our plate was magnificent, and I couldn't think of a single way to make the food better. The wine list is amazing, and our waiter spent a good two minutes asking us what we like in win to figure out the perfect bottle for us, without trying to select a super expensive bottle. In particular I would suggest the pigeon and steak if they are on the menu, and PLEASE don't order a la carte, there's a reason the chef is recommending the items on the set menu, it means they are the most fresh, and the best he has to offer that day. This Bistro is away from touristy Paris, however, it is still very popular, so, reservations are recommended. My Fiance and I actually went without one and were still seated outside, which was still perfect. The steak au poivre is the BEST! Their frites are AMAZING! Definitely recommend. Fabulous! Stayed in an apartment just upstairs and managed to snag a last minute Friday night reservation. No idea that it had been featured on Antony Bourdain till later but I'm not surprised. I checked as we booked and was told gluten free me wasn't going to be a problem as 'we can work with that'. Staff were great at checking for options and making sure we had a great meal. Menus available in French and English and this is excellent bistro food - steaks, game, fish and fabulous desserts. Steak was fabulous and loads of frites too! The set menu I think was around 40€ for three courses and we got some salami to nibble on before dinner. Dessert wise - the souffle was out of bounds for me but the ile flottant was lovely. We spent nearly 3 hours lingering over dinner and a fabulous bottle of red wine. Extensive wine list with some high end options. Our bio-dynamic red bordeaux was fab with our steaks and I think less than 25€ a bottle. Service was lovely - the bar tender was super chatty in both French and English (we were beside the bar). Although I was only there once (*sad face) my friend who stayed in Paris longer made a return visit. Definitely go! We saw around 20 disappointed people being turned away without reservations - definitely an 11eme hot spot! read more

After hearing locals and tourist alike rave about Bistro Paul Bert, I felt it necessary to see what all the hoopla was all about. With it being steps away from the apartment I was renting, it was a no brainer. The decor is charming however clientele was mostly American (which tarnishes it slightly imo). Servers are perfectly bilingual and very friendly. I ordered on recommendation the Filet De Boeuf which priced at 33 Euros was a steal. Fantastic plate. The meat was a tender, perfectly cooked medium-rare piece of beef plated with a cream/peppercorn type sauce. It comes with fries that I found myself dipping into the sauce after the main course was finished. Excellent meal. I managed to snag bites of other meals and all were delicious. Highly recommended if you find yourself in the 11e and do not want to bust the bank. read more

Love the atmosphere best of all and with every Parisienne experience the kindness of the waitstaff was beyond measure. I even got a friendly wave goodbye from the hostess - I have to return to eat more before I head home. 3 course lunch today with a nice glass of Bordeaux. Creme of asparagus to start. Brought in a deep clear glass bowl it was yellowy-green and frothy. Topped with some fresh chive, the essence of perfectly cooked (just underdone) asparagus infused this delight. Then I had tartare of beouf with frites. The beef was dancing on my tongue with the bite of juicy capers fresh onion and mustard throughout. Accompanied by perfect frite. I finished with a small square of a kind of thick dense chocolate cake - almost fudge like in a sauce of vanilla cream. I want more. All served on old school white china with the name of the place emblazoned. It was a real neighborhood place - I witnessed many diners greeting others with warm hugs. This is a beautiful turn of the century bistrot with reasonable prices and a good wine list, where you will find foreigners and French alike. As typical in a French bistrot, the menu is presented on a chalk board (they also have one in English), a good sign that it changes frequently, and you simply select the course. I was really surprised to find a 2007 Chateauneuf on the wine list that was very good and reasonably priced. I had the Monkfish Tempura, followed by Steak Tartare and frites. Both were very good, and the portions were copious. Their cheese cart was very impressive, with probably a dozen good selections from across France, and effectively all-you-can-eat. I would definitely recommend this bistrot and intend to go there again when I return to Paris. read more

Came here for dinner during our recent Paris trip. Our hotel made reservation for us so we didn't have to wait when we got there. We did their 3-course prix fixe, which cost around 36 euros per person. The best dish was the grand marnier souffle. Do ask how much water or juice is before ordering it. This restaurant is unassuming, it is not a Michelin star restaurant, nor are any of the chefs celebrities or highly applauded individuals; however, it is quite simply one of the better meals I've ever had, every single aspect of it... from the first glass of champagne to the last bite of apple pie. Each dish is truly the best it can be, and this place puts out a lot of them, so the bar for quality is enormously high. Do not come here without a reservation, and do not come here without an appetite, the service is excellent, genuine, thoroughly non-Parisian and the wine list is great too. My favorite dish was the venison entrée, with an amazing sauce and celery root puree. We got there for lunch right when it opened and were seated immediately with no reservation. Seemed to be mostly locals and the famously gruff French waiters were even, dare I say it, friendly. For all the folks worried about the service and being seated in a tourist section I would say give it a shot during lunchtime. The food would have been worth braving a bit of rudeness, but fortunately we did not have to, might have helped that we at least attempted to start every conversation in French, but the waiters were happy to switch into English when we ran into the limits of our command of the language. read more

Everything felt a little off at this restaurant. I had the hotel call and make the reservation so no issues there. (Booked two days before.) From there the experience is made to be a one-size-fits-all to try and turn tables over quickly. A huge chalkboard menu (in French or English) is presented to each table outlining the 41 Euro three course menu. The "specials" on the wall added three options. Collectively, only about six options for entrees. It seems that there must be a full menu but they didn't want to waste time offering. When I asked for other dessert options I was told there was none. The table next to us asked for a side of béarnaise but was told there was none. They pointed to our side of béarnaise and were quickly told "oh." The sauce showed up quickly after that. Food was good but not memorable. We got thick French fries with our order but other tables got thin. We weren't given an option so I don't know if it's something you can ask for or not. I did not enjoy the soufflé for dessert. The waiter conveniently added one Euro to our bill total when he cashed us out. I'm happy I got to try this place but I would not come back again. read more

Was a warm evening and I ordered the red wine a bit chilled - which is a French custom to do with certain light red wines. The first bottle was room temperature and again, the second bottle. "Oui bien sur.....c'est un peu frais" the waiter said. Sole Meuniere arrived and when asked to debone it, I was told I had to do it myself. The restaurant was more than half empty and we were told by the man with the reservation book that they were booked until 9:30 - this was at 8:00 and it was very quiet in there (and all of the tables outside were open except for one). What. We saw the same thing happen to another American couple and I saw another Yelper say the same thing. It was obvious he just didn't want Americans at the restaurant. Everyone says to come here so naturally we did. I HIGHLY recommend you don't. One of the waiters spilt wine on a vintage, non water proof Cartier watch. The manager Bertrand came over, without a mask on (illegal), to the table and berated us. He said that the watch was shit. He said Cartier was shit. He said that it was a cheap watch and worthless. I asked him to please leave us alone 5 times and he continued to berate us and then finally walked away. I've been to dozens of high end restaurants in Paris and never in my life have I been berated by the staff for a mistake they made. The entrees were also not even good. The haddock was dry and my pigeon was over cooked and dry. Also the wine, which was overpriced, was some of the worst I've ever had in France. Many other reviewers have had a similar experience with the rude staff, terrible food, and overpriced, and undrinkable wine. So not only is their staff terrible and rude, the food is some of the worst I've had in Paris. I strongly urge you to skip this place. This was our first meal in Paris, but unfortunately not one of our favorite meals of the trip. The bistro was busy when we arrived, but we were seated right away. The menu is written on a board daily, with a 3 course option at 38€ (if purchased separately, the appetizers is 10€, entree 27€, and dessert/cheese 9€). It's only lunchtime there but our bodies were still in Eastern Standard Time and exhausted from a day of traveling. The waiters were nice and they explained every item on the board since it was all in French. We opted for the appetizer and main course only with a bottle of house red wine. This is the restaurant that was featured on "The Layover" and the food they had on the show is on a different "specials" board that was not part of the prix fixe. We had the smoked herring and scallops, followed by venison and beef - I adored the buttery scallops but my venison entree was too rare - it was difficult to chew and swallow. Our dinner here was the best of our stay in Paris -- simply outstanding. We started with two appetizers: deliciously buttery langoustines and a plate of cold marinated green beans topped with generous slices of the creamiest fois gras I've ever had. (Actually, this is a lie. We started by devouring an entire basket of bread while waiting for said appetizers. And it was worth the extra calories.) The main course was a shared dish of beef ribs that was so huge we couldn't finish it, and so delicious on its own that we barely dipped into the tasty Bearnaise sauce that accompanied it. The fries on the side were also quite good and had some sort of unique flavor that I think may have been horse fat, but maybe I'm just making that up. I asked our server to recommend a wine that would work with all of this, and he chose the perfect French red. My only regret is not saving room for dessert. read more
