So for the food, love shrimp tostadas, Never had them before but very flavorful bites and appreciate they used jumbo shrimp and cooked them just right so them plump and juicy. For the Bouillabaisse which I made and had before, honestly it was perfect, all seafood was cooked perfectly, broth was flavorful and pretty generous on the portion. Only thing I was more shrimp, bread and broth. Otherwise definitely glad I got try here. Hard to figure out when up then since there hours and when open neon sign light up differ. Don't let the scruffy interior fool you, this place is great. The chef is a classically trained chef in French cuisine and it shows. The price point for the level of culinary talent is a winner. The plating is beautiful; the flavors are like a party in your mouth. The chicken and mole is the best chicken I've ever had. Meat is tender and falling off of the bone. My husband loves the vegetable risotto and gets it every time. If you come before 4:00pm, get the fish tacos from the lunch menu even the rice and beans have a lot of flavor. I'll start off by saying we found this little gem through Yelp. I have been excited to try it due to the high reviews. We live thirty miles from this restaurant. Let me tell you it was worth every mile. We came here for a late lunch/early dinner type situation on a Saturday after doing some shopping in a nearby city. It's tucked away in a little corner of a side parking lot off main street. Parking was not an issue, however they do share the lot with other businesses. Street parking is also available. When we arrived we were greeted and seated immediately. We were able to choose our own table which was nice. We were the only patrons there at around 4pm. Menus were immediately provided. We ordered our drinks. My partner had a sangria and I had a beer. The lighting was a little dim and the building looks like it has been there for a long time and has been repurposed over the years. It gave me old vibes like when we visited New Orleans. The decor was pretty plain, but we loved the swing era music playing. When our drinks arrived we ordered our appetizers and main course. My partner had the papas (potato) tacos to start and the chorizo quesadilla for entree. I ordered the curry crab cake/beignet to start and a chorizo burrito for entree. The menu selection is very interesting. You can choose between Mexican, American, or French cuisine. Our appetizers came out timely. They were both executed to perfection. My crab cake beignet was perfectly cooked. Crisp outer crust with a soft perfectly cooked, perfectly seasoned crabby center. The filling was full of crab and was not bready. I believe I said it was the best crabcake/beignet I ever had. The papas tacos were equally delicious. The tacos were crispy which complimented the fillings. We cleared the plates. Then our entrees arrived a short time later. No complaints here either. It's hard to screw up a quesadilla and a burrito, however, they executed these dishes to perfection as well. The ratios of the ingredients were ideally prepared and were cooked precisely. We cleared the plates. We opted for dessert. I wanted flan which they sadly did not have at this outing. So we ordered a Churro with vanilla ice cream. The churro was a little dense for my liking (not as crispy as I expected) however when paired with the ice cream, coffee, and tea it was still very enjoyable. All the while the staff were patient, polite, responsive, and attentive. We were so pleased we left the 30% tip. needless to say they exceeded my already high expectations. What a spot in an unexpected place! We went on a Saturday night, and there were plenty of tables open (although I had also made a reservation via FB Messenger). We started with cocktails, which were quite affordable! I loved the mango margarita - so fruity and delicious. The menu is so interesting - we wanted to try everything! First, they brought out warm baguette with butter. The perfect start to our French-Mexican meal! Then we enjoyed the goat cheese tartlets app which had caramelized onions and bits of bacon. YUM! For entrees, we got the skirt steak with caramelized onions, potatoes, and guacamole as well as the moules du Mexique, mussels with chorizo and jalapeños. Both of the dishes were unique and delish. And the portions were great - we had leftovers for dinner the next day! The service was quick and attentive, and overall we left with a great feeling. Really delicious and special food. We started with lovely drinks- I had a smoky Orange with Mezcal, my husband enjoyed an expresso martini which was not too sweet. We split an appetizer of tiny corn taco with potato filling topped with goat cheese on a bed of refried beans- really tasty, my husband can't eat Cilantro, so they put it on the side for me. We both went with the Red Snapper on risotto with spinach. Wow wow it was great, we both took a lovely portion home for lunch. Came here for a date night Saturday night and got a table inside with ease. All the staff was super kind and attentive. The warm bread and butter to preface the meal was a treat. Met a friend for lunch here after looking for a new place to try out. It was a little weird/unclear how seating worked (specifically sitting outside) when we walked in with just a person behind a bar as the "host" with a few menus on the bar area. We asked if we could sit outside and weren't sure if we were supposed to order inside and then wait outside. My only complaint. All that aside, the food was really great and our waiter/host was great, too. I got the croque monsieur which was tasty and accompanied by a nice, fresh salad and well cooked fries. My friend enjoyed her fish tacos. I would love to try more of their menu. Everything was very good. Bistro du Mexique! An extraordinary phenomenon smack in the middle of Pinebush NY! Unfortunately, as far as I know, there isn't a single authentic French eatery in the whole of Sullivan County, and that is truly shameful! When I heard rumor of a Mexican & French eatery I investigated and found the above mentioned. The place is owned by two Mexican gentlemen who do all the cooking, and one, Manuel, learned the art of French Cuisine having spent many years cooking in various French eateries which dot Manhattan. Well, we were focused on learning just how authentic his kitchen would be, fearing it might be some sort of French-Mexican Fusion place. Far from the fact was our concern. First off, let me tell you, unless you have already been here, the entrance is not easy to find! GPS points to where it is on the map and there is a clothing boutique right where the GPS lands you. Over the boutique window there is a sign which says Bistro du Mexique OPEN. So there we were trying to look in the store window to the darkness beyond the window mannequins thinking the restaurant was back there someplace. No dice. Neither was it next door nor across the street. Finally, in desperation, we called the place and sheepishly confessed where we were, what we were doing, and our complete sense of being lost! The voice on the telephone instructed us to look to our left where there is a municipal parking lot. The entrance is back there facing the lot. All the trouble was well worth it though. We finally found the door and walked in to subtle lighting, basic toned down colors, semi-spartan digs. Michael greeted us from behind the bar and seated us in the dining room. This place is small sporting just a few tables. The menu is rather small but what we ate was spectacular! Mind you the desert menu changes so it's not written down. Michael offered us something to drink then left us to ponder the offerings. Background music alternated between American Jazz and French sidewalk café tunes. Very appropriate. When I was in Europe back in the 80's serving in our Navy, I visited France several times and what struck me as defining about French Cuisine was its ability to make me happy without bluster and fanfare. No spicy wake ups. It always amazed me what the French were able to do to the word "mild," for yes, that would be the morality of their cookery. Sensible comes to mind as well. This was definitely going to be a test of authenticity. A Mexican chef in a Mexican and French Restaurant working with and blending together various culinary aspects of "mild." Well, I assure all who read this that Manuel most certainly pulls it off! We began our meal with Soup a l'Oignon. Being so used to Americanized versions of French Onion Soup I wanted to see if this was more French than anything else. It was! It was perfect! Just the right amount of cheese and the correct type of baguette and NOT chock full of salt. Typically mild as in France and amazingly so! Next we each tried the Tartelettes au Fromage de Chèvre. MY GOODNESS! This must be a dish they eat in Heaven! Everything mentioned on the menu delicately presented on a crisped pastry bowl. This was Uber-yummyliscious to say the least! For our main meals, we diverted. Pilar went Mexican and I stayed the course and forged ahead with the French. Pilar opted for the Arrachera Borracha and this was outrageously tasty, the skirt steak having been flame broiled resulting in a very yummy slight charring. I decided to REALLY be adventurous and try something I never order when dining out, FISH! I don't particularly like fish and I am always thinking a bone is going to get stuck in my throat and I'll croak! I ordered the Filet de Loup de Mer. Wow. Yup! It left me almost speechless as it was so yummy. Not a bone to be found. The skin crisped to perfection. The carrot truffle which Manuel used as the base of the plating was extraordinary! By the way, all the platings were well presented. Dessert consisted of a Creme Brûlée for Pilar and Red Wine Marinated Figs over Vanilla Ice Cream for me. Outstanding finish to an outstanding meal! At this point I need to point out our server, Colomba, whose tableside manner was demure and intuitive with always a smile. Tableware and glassware were pristine. Clean white cotton napkins. We had a large party and he reviewed everyone's order to make sure he got it right, and gave separate checks for couples and reviewed that to make sure he got it right. He did a great job! We went on a Sunday. The only problem was the music (which they have on Sundays) was too loud for the size of the room. Music was sax and stand up bass. We sat down and then the 2 guys who played music came in. The sax was just a few feet from us, and we could barely (and sometimes NOT) hear the person sitting next to us. We recently ate here twice and each retime the food es exceptional. We had the Rabbit in Adobo which was awesome. The second visit we had the Rabbit again and the Cassoulet which was also very good. The restaurant is a true family establishment that somehow survived the Pandema thanks to take out. The son, named Maicol (pronounced Michael but is a combo of his dad(the chef) Manuel and his mom Columbo (the other chef) made the worlds best Margaritas! We make these at hone and I must admit are pretty good at it but his were awesome. Highly recommend them. We did switch out the Tequila for Mezcal we we prefer. There a a bit short staffed still as it's difficult to hire people in that are right now so if they are busy just be patient and Your tummy will thank you. We are there quite often and have never had a bad meal. it's an interesting mix of Mexican and French cuisine, but it's all so good. They have a nice little bar there as well. We had a midweek lunch here this past week. The service was pleasant. The food was fairly good. The Guacamole was OUTSTANDING, but, the portion should be at least another 2 to 3 ounces, if possible. The Tortilla Chips with the Guacamole were decent and freshly fried in house, but, the grease that they were fried in was a bit on the older side, or, at least they tasted that way. The Fish Tacos were fairly good, but, the SOLE would generally NOT be our first choice for Fresh Fish on a Fish Taco, and, it is fairly difficult and expensive to get Fresh Fish from The Ocean this time of the year (Fall Season) and delivered to the Hudson Valley. The Pasta Dish was pretty good. Italian Food at a Mexican Restaurant? Yes! And it tasted fresh and was done nicely. All in all, it is a fairly good place that has been in business for 3 years, per the Staff. There was adequate off-street parking which made it easily accessible off of the main road in this small town.
