I'm big on a nice piece of meat with mashed potatoes and asparagus, this was right up my lane. I typically order a wedge salad with my entree and this wedge salad did not disappoint. The wife and I had date night and I decided to treat her to a nice dinner. We will soon found out why we haven't returned to this restaurant in many years. The reservation process was quick and simple. All done over the phone. Nice. We arrived for our reservation and we were quickly seated. The restaurant provides complimentary bread and butter. The butter was extremely hard. Very unappealing. I saw a couple next to us using the propane heater to soften up their butter. We ordered the bacon scallops. For $19 bucks, you get four small scallops. The flavor was good but the scallops were small. I ordered the mushroom fettuccine while the wife ordered the pan seared tuna. The main entree took FOREVER. People who ordered after us got their food before us. Finally our food arrived. I'll be short about my mushroom fettuccine. It lacked any salt flavor. The wife tried mine and also agreed. The sad part was I added quite a bit of salt and it still was horrible. The wife felt Bad and offered me her tuna. Now her tuna was right on. Perfectly cooked and delicious. My meal was basically wasted since neither of us ate even a 1/4 of this plate. This is how bad the mushroom fettuccine was. Would I return to Bistro 234? I don't think so. I am torn by this experience. I wanted this dinner to be special and delicious. I wanted this to be a special night for the wife and I. My wife and I went here for a nice dinner date but we left very disappointed. This is supposed to be one of the nicest restaurants in town and we were miserable to whole time because of how hot it was. We were next to the thermostat and it was reading 87 F. This is well above the Cal/OSHA regulations for indoor work environments. I can't blame the staff for the service or the food with how hot it was in there. Not sure if ownership has changed but the service was terrible. We arrived without reservations and were told there was no seating available inside. No biggie. Totally understood considering we didn't make reservations. The issue I had was: 1. When we arrived the hostess was somewhat rude and dismissed us when we told her we didn't have reservations. I asked if we could turn on the outdoor heat lamps and were told that they weren't working. 2. There were plenty of tables available inside and although I'm sure they were being held for reservations, it's usually cuStom that restaurants have a grace period on reservations. read more

Downtown parking sucks, but it's a great place to walk around after a full meal. You enter the restaurant by walking through the opened gates, as I was confused about how to enter because they used to have a door on the side, but I guess that door doesn't allow entries now. I ordered the Mediterranean Melt, and it was okay. It definitely was cheesy, but not enough flavor to where I'd get it again. You get a side of fries, soup, or salad. I do recommend but NOT my dishes today. The chicken piccata was so lemon heavy I puckered like a little kid with the three bites I took. Lemon lemon lemon! That's only tasted I couldn't eat it. Chicken was tender and the presentation was beautiful, just very lemon heavy! I also ordered a pineapple breeze summer cocktail for $12. this drink has nothing to do with pineapple so I don't know why they call it pineapple breeze. I should've looked better at the description of what was in it. It says it has dark rum simple syrup orange liqueur and lemon juice. I kind of thought it was a typo because it's called a pineapple breeze so I ordered it anyway. All it tasted like was orange and lemon. A better name for this drink should be citrus breeze not pineapple breeze. This drink has nothing to do with pineapple. This lemon heavy drink on top of my lemon heavy chicken piccata was not good due to the overwhelming lemon. Service was absolutely excellent! This restaurant is very nice beautiful great location on the corner of Main Street and nice outside patio seating. I do recommend. This place may be something special for Turlock but I've been to several similar concepts at home, nothing exceptional, nothing exciting. The bread that greeted us to the table was quickly devoured and never refilled despite our request but the salads were pretty prompt making it not a big deal at all. Unfortunately the salads were drowning in dressing and while flavorful it quickly became too much and overpowering. My wife made the right call with dressing on the side, which turned out to be a lot less heavy-handed. The New York strip was actually pretty good. Far from the best steak that I've ever tasted. It was cooked exactly to the temperature that I requested and I'm so glad that I got the peppercorn sauce on the side as it packed a spicy punch. A few dips of the steak every so often was plenty and I was really glad that the steak didn't arrive at the table swimming in the sauce, which would have been borderline inedible, for me at least. All in all, Bistro 234 was very middle of the road for me. Nothing phenomenal, nothing terrible... just decent food that comes at a price, that's for sure. read more

This wine bar/restaurant in downtown Turlock is a great spot for outdoor eating. Plenty of beer and wine to choose from although much of the wine was not the wineries I am used to seeing living in the Bay Area. One of our friends ordered the Orange Muscat and being a dessert wine lover, we were both very disappointed in it. This wine which should of been bursting with fruit, and deep rich in color, looked like a pale Chardonnay. The nose did not have the fruits I would expect to smell such a poached pear and apricot but more of a fruit concoction mess. The taste was also like the nose, not impressive. I didn't get the name (but I will and update the review) but it was a big disappointment for me. It almost tasted corked. The rest of the meal was great. Everyone loved their dishes. I had the bacon wrapped filet done medium rare was it was great. Good cut of filet, very tendon and very flavorful. The roasted yellow Yukon potatoes with aoli mayo were incredible as were the fresh sautéed vegetables that had very good seasoning and snap/crunch. The peanut butter dessert was to die for. Homemade and light (not so thick and heavy) this dessert was a real home run for me. If you ever find yourself in Turlock, this is a great spot to eat. The service was good, but the prices are a little on the high side, so be prepared to spend at least $50.00 for two without dessert, coffee, or wine. 4 stars The song of the review is America's "Horse With No Name" because sitting outside on the main street of Turlock reminded me of a horse town of the Central Valley. read more

We came here for my sister's birthday (made a reservation) and our server was so attentive, knowledgeable and pleasant! My husband and sister got the burger and they couldn't stop raving about it! Came in here earlier this month and had a very bad experience. We waited to be welcomed, and when we were finally acknowledged it was as if we were an inconvenience to them. The service was very slow, and the table next to us told us that the unpleasant woman walking around the restaurant who was so unfriendly is the owner! The worst part is my wife got sick from the seafood stew and my steak was VERY overcook to the point of being dry. Had a poor experience with a server, and when I finally was able to discuss with Nestor, He didn't seem too concerned or engaged with my concerns. We went to Bistro 234 last night to celebrate our mother's birthday. We thought our reservation was for 630, but it was for 6. They were very accommodating of our mistake and took good care of us. We sat in the back of the restaurant this time, and much preferred it to sitting out in the front area. I am always warm, and they did a good job of keeping the restaurant cool and comfortable. We ordered a couple of bread and butter plates, and the bread was terrible. Dry and ice cold. It probably would have tasted better had it been warmed. Everyone enjoyed their cocktails and dinner was delicious. I had lasagna, which was out of this world, and I have half left for tonight's dinner. Other's had salmon, gnocchi, rib eye, and half chicken, and everyone really enjoyed their food. Dessert, sadly, was a different experience. I ordered key lime pie. I wish I had taken a picture. It came out looking like a flat piece of cheese and did not taste very good. I am not one to leave any dessert behind, but I didn't finish it. The creme brulee and flourless chocolate cake were also disappointing, but my mom had the giant ice cream pie thing (can't remember what it's called) and she loved it. Our server was helpful and attentive throughout the evening, and overall it was a good experience in a nice atmosphere. Would give 5 starts if they stepped up their bread and dessert game, but the main courses were delicious. Next time, we will go to the ice cream shop around the corner for dessert. read more

This is a fantastic lunch spot. Lovely covered or not covered outdoor dining as well as inside seating & bar seating. I had the French Onion Soup (this is what made me choose this specific restaurant). Best French Onion I have had in a very long time. Hubby had Ribeye and I had the Filet.
