I don't live in MI anymore, so whenever I come to town, I try to grab a coney. My usual go to is Leo's or National. I had never been to L George's. I sat at the counter and ordered a coney combo (coney, fries and pop). It came out quickly. The dog had the perfect "snap", the chili was tasty, and the fries were nice and hot. While I was eating, several different servers checked on me to make sure I was all set. When I asked for the check, one of the servers said "it's been taken care of". I was like, what? She told me that an off duty cop who was sitting in a booth paid for my meal. Now mind you, the bill for a coney combo is not pricey, but still. I was blown away with gratitude. I recently lost my job and had just spent the first full week unemployed. The experience is humbling, having never been part of a corporate cut before. But, the time allowed me to come to MI to be with my mom while she underwent heart surgery. To the cop who bought my lunch, thank you from the bottom of my heart. To the staff at L George's...you are the best and I will be telling everyone I know. I can't wait to come back.

I've been coming to this spot since around 2006, and it used to be one of my absolute favorites…read more It's still fairly good, but over time I've noticed a shift in the overall experience as longtime staff has aged out and newer, younger staff has come in. They recently renovated the interior, and I do really like the update--using lighter colors has brightened the space and made it feel more modern. Unfortunately, a recent experience seriously impacted my opinion. I called to place a takeout order for about five people from my workplace, and the young man who answered the phone--Adrian--was extremely rude. He seemed impatient from the start, and by the time I was giving the third order, he began huffing and puffing, talking over me, and rushing me. Before I could even finish, he hung up on me. His coworkers were saying his name in the background, which is how I learned who he was. Adrian's behavior showed a complete lack of basic customer service and professionalism, and it did not represent Maine Street well at all. If answering phones and taking orders is part of the job, then patience and respect should be a given. Adrian needs serious improvement in customer service, because that interaction alone was enough to make me reconsider ordering again. On a lighter note, this place has long been part of the fabric of Hamtramck, and that's why this experience was so disappointing. Hamtramck has always taken pride in its local spots, community, and hospitality, and I hope Maine Street gets back to reflecting the warmth and care that made so many of us loyal customers for years.

So, I searched Yelp for 'omelette' and they never disappoint. Coolidge Café is located on 9 Mile Rd just east of Coolidge Rd. Their street sign says it plain as day for all to see - Coolidge Café Specialty Omelettes. Another sign says, they have had the best omelettes in town for over 40 years!!! They are open daily from 7am - 3pm. I studied the menu with a peeked interest. The menu has 27 Omelettes to choose from PLUS an Omelette Your Way option with your choice of meats, veggies and cheese. Each omelette is prepared with 5 eggs and served with hash browns or grits and toast. Yes, 5 eggs! After studying this large selection, I settled on the Coolidge Omelette with grits and wheat toast. Sunday brunch was delicious and filling! Besides omelettes, their menu is vast with other breakfast favorites, griddle, sides and breakfast wrap options. Their menu continues with soups, salads, wraps, burgers, sandwiches, melts, pitas, Coolidge dinners, Italian, Mexican, Seafood, Desserts and Side offerings. They also have a kids menu. Debbie was focused on placing those orders at the counter when I walked in to place my takeout order. She took my order with precision and brought my order to me where I was seating at a table by the door. Note: A 3% fee will be added to all credit card orders. The parking lot and the restaurant were pretty full. Although there was no wait time for a table. The seating options are typical cafe table and chairs. They were fully staffed to handle their patrons.

So, not expecting a long wait, since we were the only one's placing an order at that time. First clue - had to ask the waitress to wipe off the table. Well, at 11:30am, our food had not arrived yet. Getting busy now. Our order - or at least most of it - finally arrived at 11:40am. Waitress Never came back for drink refills during this time or apologize for the wait. Ordered scrambled eggs with cheese - the only item that was truly steaming hot. Cat fish was ok - just luke warm. Oh yeah- ordered the Salmon croquettes as an appetizer. Never arrived. Was told later they didn't have any. Potatoes with peppers and onions were tasty, not cooked too hard. Shrimp & grits were good. Had to remind the waitress that we had ordered them though. The french toast croissant was probably good, if we had an opportunity to eat it while it was hot. The real insult was that the syrup arrived with a layer of water on the top!!!! Never have seen watered down pancake syrup in my life!!!!! Took 15 minutes to get it replaced. Of course by then the French Toast was cold. Ambiance - why on earth do they need a live DJ playing the music way too load. Maybe it is to distract you from the excruciating long wait :-( Without the DJ, they could another table for 4. Have been coming here for years at their different locations. They have always struggled with timely service. Even from scratch, there is no reason orders any order should take nearly 2 hours. Overall, the food is very good. The owner has ALWAYS struggled with getting orders out timely. If anything it has gotten worse. Would STRONGLY recommend: - getting rid of the DJ - adds nothing to your bottom line and uses space that could generate revenue with a table for 4. - get a qualified restaurant busines consultant to assist with timely processing of orders and efficiently turning over tables. - faster service and bussing of tables could easily result in doubling revenue, just from the turnover - train staff - tables should be cleaned before seating customers, should check in every 15 minutes on requests or other needs. There is a 20% gratuity automatically added ti the bill - yet the waitress had the unmitigated gall to suggest a "cash tip". - STOP cutting corners by taking shortcuts like watering down the syrup. Makes one wonder what else you are doing that diminishes the quality of the food. We have patronized many time over the years and brought friends. Sad to say, can't imagine returning. Wishing you well.
