Long story short: my husband used to come here about 12 years ago and had really fond memories of it. So when we were back in town, we decided to stop in--fully expecting to have just one drink and move on. That plan did not happen. Decent food & good service. It was a bit of a wait (clams took 15-20 mins - we were ok with that), but they brought EVERYTHING out at the same time - including our soup. There was so much stuff on the table we had to ask them to bring the burger back to the kitchen until we were at least done eating our soup. Finally stopped into this neighborhood spot around 9 on a Friday. The inside bar was still crowded but we were informed that the kitchen had stopped serving food. A bit disappointing but understandable, so we ordered two glasses of wine anyway. Both were great! Typical wine bar pricing, around $15/glass. About 5-10 mins later we were told it was last call which made us feel a bit like we had to rush. The posted hours were open til 11pm so I'm not sure if this was typical or not. ADORABLE quaint Upper West Side wine bar. I went there for dinner last week and sat by myself at the bar and had the best time! The bartender was SO friendly and they had a great playlist on that everyone was enjoying. I ordered the salmon entree. It's the little sister to the more cavernous Barcibo on Broadway and we found it after big sis told us it would be a 20 min. wait. The warm New York night called for white, so I ordered a nice Viognier with some grilled calamari. Both very good, but neither outstanding. Bin 71 is a small place, its outdoor seating the major draw in the summertime, indoors is nothing but a bar, no tables at all, which I find odd. I wasn't greeted at the door, had to make eye contact with someone and see if it was ok to sit at one of the tables outside. Was brought a glass of water and had my drink order taken by a waitress, but I guess her shift must have ended because I never saw her again. Someone else took my friend's order and we had to flag someone down to put in a food order. He wasn't too thrilled to give me his opinion when I was trying to decide between two items. I was disappointed that my trout was indeed a smoked trout, must have missed that in the description and it was indeed an appetizer portion. If you're hungry, don't come here because you'll leave hungry. And the menu is limited and has an assortment of weird things that seem to lack a theme or rhyme or reason. Back to the bad service - not once did anyone come by to refill my water. And we had to flag the guy down again to get the check and wait forever for him to come pick up our credit cards. Stopped by here Saturday night with my bf for a drink before having dinner at The Ribbon around the corner. Such a great date spot! It's small but cozy and quaint and excellent wine & food selections. Love the dim lighting!! We grabbed a glass of wine and ordered a cheese plate ($19 for 3 cheeses - which were fantastic - and came with yummy toast & a side of jam). Definitely hit the spot for the cheese craving we had and the wine was delish and great pricing. Great service too - our waitress was helpful with cheese selections. Looking forward to returning to order some food - lots of options on the menu. Great date spot for a quick drink - especially if you're heading to The Ribbon down the street after (it's less than 1 block away on 72nd). Enough that we shifted our seats to allow a few others to join our large high top family style. We met a nice young couple (with their 10 month old) who were regulars. We tried the smoked blue fish pate and a couple of glasses of Malbec. The flaw I would gig them on is my glass was poured from a bottle which was open ( they poured a taste which was great ) any then they poured my wife 1/2 a glass from that bottle and then open a new bottle to finish her pour. 1. Never do this without tasting it 2. The difference between the 1st and 2nd bottle was dramatic 3. The glass with the end of the bottle was full of the dregs We did each have a glass from the second one so we weren't too upset but a wine bar should know better. This is a small wine bar with a great selection of small plates, entrees and wines. It can get crowded but the bar seating is good and the outside seating is especially enjoyable in the summer at any time of the day or evening. The food has always been great, notably the Octopus, Mushroom risotto, Cheese plates and the Burrata Crostini. However, the only thing I Do Not Recommend are the short ribs ravioli. They were not warm enough and are way too watery. Do try the eats mentioned above, the Sparkling Pinot Nair and the apple cobbler! They are mighty delicious. read more

Bin 71 was stumbled upon in between photography classes in Central Park. It's a very cute spot for a date or to catch up with a friend, especially on a summer day or evening when you can sit outside. It is very tiny with just a few two persons table out-front and then a bar inside. Would not suggest a group larger than 4. The food was average- had the buratta and gnocchi which were both okay but nothing to write home about. The wine selection was extensive but slightly pricey average around $15/glass. read more

I hate the UWS. It's fulla old white stuffy yuk yuks. ...but this spot is golden. The wine selection is terrif and the SQUID SALAD was on par with what I've had in Spain and Portugal. Whaaaaaat?!! It's good to know what to expect when arriving here (save you some time and hassle). If you are looking for a spacious but quiet wine bar with a staff that will wait at your every move, smile at all times and provide recommendations, you better find another place. If you are looking for a small, loud locals wine bar and you know exactly what you want, then this is your spot. This is what a Cheers bar would feel like if it did a wine bar in NYC. Most patrons are locals and can tell locals, tourists and everyone else apart from each other. There is maybe room for 20 people sitting and another 6-10 standing (shoulder to shoulder) and room for another 10-12 people outside - that's it. Given the small size though, the offerings in terms of glasses, bottles, beer and food is pretty generous. There is a strong exponential correlation here between the temperature and crowd size so be prepared to find another wine bar if you come during peak times. If you are a dark beer fan you will like the porter they have on tap (not sure if it's offered year round or if it's seasonal though). read more

This place is all right, except that it seems that if your bar specializes in wine, you ought to be able to say something about the wine -- no matter the ineptness of your clientele. And I admit upfront that we are not connoisseurs of any sort. (We appreciate.) So we go into Bin 71 (after a depressing wait at Wine & Roses up the street, which is another story) and ask the server if she has any recommendations out of the sparkling wines on the list. She looks a little blank and is like, well, what do you like? Well, we just sit there mutely (our bad), but she doesn't follow up further questions, and just kind of stands there continuing to look blankly at this wine list like she's never seen it before. After a while, she goes, "Well, I really like the [$75 bottle]." No further recs. She did know a little bit about the two mid-range bottles on the list once we asked ("really sweet", "red...really rich"), but went back to asserting that she really liked the $75 bottle. Silence. OK. So we sort of blindly picked something else, and it ended up fine. Then we wanted to split the check over 3 credit cards (again, our bad), but she came back with each of the 3 cards charged for the full amount of the bill. Oops. She apologized and claimed she was filling in for someone that night and normally never worked the register. Fine, we get that; no big. But again, just seems like if you're a wine bar, you ought to have something interesting to say about the wine. read more

I've gone to Bin 71 once and had a great time. This is one of the better neighborhood bars. The staff is friendly, the atmosphere (albeit crowded) is friendly, and the configuration - meant to maximize the small space - encourages cross-party conversation which adds to the congenial atmosphere. All in all, it's just a good time and I look forward to going back. Bin 71 is a wine bar with some delicious tapas and a good selection of wines. When you turn the corner onto your 3rd glass, be prepared - the friendly staff gets generous with the pouring. The cheese plate, as I remember it, was also really good. Yes this place is extremely small. But it's so cute, and there's outside seating. I chose to sit inside since it was too hot for my liking. The bartender lady was nice, not too talkative, but I can understand why since she was surrounded by 8 guys, and so was I since I was eating by myself. There was a good variety of wine, I ended up getting a beer (which was nice and cold), try the whale tail pale ale (say that 5x). I also had the cheese and cured meat platter, I had a sharp hard cheese and a brie, also really yummy salami. And please, even if you are not an anchovy person, you'll love their imported white anchovy and tomato crostini. Soo good with a little salt and olive oil and lemon...OMG!! Bathroom is really really small, and this tourist walked in and BLEW UP THE BATHROOM and it's such a small restaurant you smelled it when the door opened, so I can't imagine coming here on a packed day when the bathroom is in full use. I really enjoyed Bin 71. its a bit small, making it better suited for summertime rather than chilly (or rainy) days, but they have outdoor seating to accommodate you for your glass (or bottle) of wine before really kicking the night into high gear. 15-20 wines by the glass, with maybe double that (?) by the bottle. glasses range from 8-18, with bottles about 35-50. the "main" bar seats about 12, with a small table able to seat 3-4, and another table able to seat about 6. I really wanted to give this place 5 stars, but unfortunately, I was too busy sipping Riesling to enjoy some brie & parma prosciutto. Also, the TVs with ESPN in the background gave it a mixed vibe. all in all, worth a look. read more
