My husband brought me here for my birthday dinner and the Billy Sunday kitchen prepared the most amazing feast I have ever had, which included a seafood tower (e.g., lobster, razorneck clams, octopus, sardines, mussels, oysters, and many more seafood delicacies that I can't remember), beef cheek tortellini in savory broth, grilled pigeon, and several other delicious items. The mocktail prepared for me was super delicious as well. The staff was very attentive and very knowledgeable and the chef also explained each dish to us. While this place is not cheap, my dinner experience here was worth every penny. read more

All that glitters, people. The cocktails are competent, I guess? At least that's their reputation, but our drinks were unbalanced--mine had a caustic, hooch-y taste, and my date's was sickly sweet. They were much more interesting and delicious on paper than in the glass. The food options are fussy and overpriced, and the portions are laughably small. The staff gives the impression that there's someplace they'd rather be. We left to find another option rather than ordering another round. After all that, looking at the bill felt like getting a leg wax. This place is kind of the anti-Lula, it embodies everything icky about the "new" Logan Square. read more

A decent roster of drinks presented in a typeface begging to offend the eyes. My biggest disappointment, however, was that the kitchen closed at midnight on Saturday night (the bar closes at 2am) with the final call for food orders supposedly occurring at 11:30pm. After the kitchen closed, our only choices were olives (not particularly recommended) and roasted nuts (roasted with some brown sugar and served in a little iron skillet). Unfortunately, we were forced to chain order the latter at an astonishing $6 a pop for about a half of a cup of nuts to try to even out the alcohol. Save all these food-related issues, though, Billy Sunday is a decent hangout--just don't go there too late. read more

No, I do not think there are enough speakeasy themed bars opening up in Chicago. That wasn't sarcastic, I actually love this trend and want more! On the day we visited, Billy Sunday had been open for two days and word was out like a fat kid in dodgeball. It was super crowded but we got lucky and scored a table near the door (Note to the building manager: Please add an entrance vestibule). We came from dinner so unfortunately were too full to try any of the small bite (the pig ear would have been my pick). Instead we quenched our thirst with some finely crafted cocktails. I got the Against the Bliss which was easy to drink with the creamy front from the sherbet and a tart finish from the rhubarb. HB got his standard Old Fashioned. Their version is crafted with bourbon and an impeccably transparent piece of hand-chipped ice. I loooooved the design of the bar and the bartender was clearly talented. Homeboy gots skillz in cocktail shaking. I definitely see accolades in his near future. read more

I heard about this place from quite a few people, most notably one of my close friends. He knows that one of my favorite cocktails is an old fashioned. He kept saying , "Billy Sunday makes the best old fashioned in the city!" I was very apprehensive, since there are a lot of great bars in this city. We went here on a boys night out, and might I say that this place is A-W-E-S-O-M-E. I ordered the aforementioned drink, and while I can't say it was the best, it certainly made top 3. I love that the ice in the drink is spherical (I just wanted to say that instead of round), it adds a nice touch. The service we got was top notch, both from our wonderful server, whose name escapes me...but she was great. The mixologists behind the bar certainly know their craft, and this is without question one of the best bars in Chicago. read more

I don't often award 5 stars but I can't find anything negative about Billy Sunday. The bartenders are some of the best I've ever came across. The Decor is super pleasing. The Melon Baller is my new favorite drink. Can't wait to come back! read more

Billy Sunday - Cocktail Bars Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

With critical acclaim come high expectations. To be honest, I was actually expecting disappointment, given my usual state of feeling underwhelmed after hitting hyped, overrated Logan Square "hotspots." I finally found the one that lived up to the acclaim! First of all, I walked in a Monday to find the place half full, with spots at the bar. Yay! The bar is dimly lit, but not like the Violet Hour where you can't see anything. Just a warm, welcoming feeling. The bartenders and staff here are approachable and friendly. They took the time to explain each and every cocktail I was interested in and even offered some off-menu options, which was awesome. I tried a Pegu Club (off menu) and the Jack something (brandy tiki-style drink). Both were incredible. I looked up a Pegu Club and realized it's one I can handle at my home bar, so now I have another one for the arsenal. We did not eat, as we devoured burgers at Parts & Labor earlier. The menu had some obscure offerings and looked overpriced, so I'm glad we ate beforehand. Anytime I'm in out in Logan Square, I will try to get in here, even though it will most certainly be to no avail. Still, hope to return without a major wait! read more

We came on a recent weeknight and were lucky enough to snag a table. The bar was absolutely packed. I loved the décor / lights / bar immediately - very good vibe. We tried several of the specialty cocktails. I loved the "cocktail" the most, even though one of the ingredients is ambergris (according to Wikipedia: a solid, waxy, flammable substance of a dull grey or blackish color produced in the digestive system of sperm whales - the waitress confirmed). The bartender also made a drink for me based on some types of flavors I was looking for and that was great too. We tried a few of the bites (steak tartare, duck confit and croquettes). The duck confit was beyond amazing - order it soon because the waitress said they were taking it off the menu. I would have liked to see a few more snack type options as we were kind of struggling with what to order for a group. We are definitely returning. 80/365 read more

Was excited to check out Billy Sunday for some cocktails after seeing it recognized on a national list of best cocktail bars. Myself and two friends were able to snag a table around 9:00 pm by the front window. The bar has a polished, hipster vibe that made me feel like I was in someone's fancy living room. I ordered the Anxiety's Door, which had a bacanora base. It was very good, with a strong smoky flavor. Watching the bartenders, you can tell they take their craft very seriously, judging from the level of detail that went in to making the various drinks. There are definitely some unique and fancy combinations on the drink menu! We also ordered the Baked Alaska, which was delicious! Anything that is marshmallow, dark chocolate and peanut butter lit on fire is going to be good. Highly recommend this dish if you're looking for dessert. I wouldn't come here every weekend but it's definitely one of the elite cocktail bars in Chicago. read more

This is a fantastic, authentic little gastro pub with amazing cocktails. The bartenders are friendly and unpretentious. By far the host (owner?) made the experience so enjoyable - he was friendly, attentive and took care to make sure our group was happy and comfortable. We didnt try any of the food on our visit, but everything looked amazing. Ambiance is warm and cozy. If you're looking for a Violet Hour type vibe without all the hype, lines and austerity, this is the place for you. Will definitely be back! read more

Solid to good cocktails, but HORRENDOUS service. Super slow to make drinks and our server was very inattentive. Wouldn't come back.

Hands down this is my favorite of the new hip places to go in Logan Square. It's a little bougie, yes of course but it's not uncomfortable there AT ALL. And the music omg the music is amazing. Punk rock classics at a volume you can still hold a conversation over. But really this place is all about the cocktails. I've loved everything I have had there. From a simple on the rocks to the craftiest cocktails, it's all been perfect. Honestly, $10 for a GREAT cocktail isn't too much. It's right on par. Anyway, my friend and I have become regulars there. The entire staff treats us like ROCKSTARS and is always friendly and happy to see us. You bet we'll be dropping in at least once a week. It's a great change of pace from the usual hang outs. And ice ball is amazing. read more

Had a fun time here. The drinks were interesting, some very tasty. Not all. Food was satisfying. Kinda light on the portion size. Note to restaurant ; not all of your hyper artisan stuff needs to cost a lot. Sometimes it's ok just to have a few value-items on the menu so people can leave feeling satisfied. It's a pretty spot, with pretty people. Helpful and attentive. Clean your light fixtures. They are growing hair and fuzz. It's distracting. And maybe a little nasty. read more

I almost don't want to say how good this place is to keep more people away and keep it as cool as it is now. Somehow, I don't think they're going to have a problem keeping up the good vibe though. I've been here twice and have such a good time I would consider becoming an alcoholic just to come hang out more often. We only sit at the bar so can't comment on the table service or food. The drinks are so delicious I've filled up on booze each time. The nuts and bolts are that this is a beautiful bar, with great service, a good crowd, any cocktail you want, very "proper" yet lacks all the pretension that's invading many parts of this city. I was encouraged to use the men's bathroom when the lady's was occupied; my kind of place (single room bathrooms btw and very clean). We've had Lee as our bartender both times and he truly encompasses the qualities of both a "mixologist" and good old fashioned bar tender who chats when you want and handles the drunks well. read more

Meh. Everything about Billy Sunday is heavy-handed. I was not impressed with the cocktails. Mine was way too sweet and my friends' drinks were too bitter, too strong, or too something else. We ordered a bar snack of roasted nuts, which was inedible. The nuts were roasted in some sort of herb paste that tasted like the most concentrated pizza seasoning imaginable. So much salt! Yikes. On the positive side -- the decor is lovely and the service was great. read more

Very friendly staff, excellent service. The drinks are excellent and if you sit at the bar it's like you're watching alchemy from an old movie. We didn't get to try any food because we had just come from dinner, but the menu had some very interesting items that we'll be sure to come back for. We went on a Saturday night and it was busy but not overly busy. I'd like to come here on a weekday and see if it's just a little more chill. The only downside is that the menu was hard to decipher. It was like reading a really messed up eye chart. It forced you to read everything very carefully, which might have been the point. read more

I'm not a huge cocktail bar person, but I do enjoy a fancy one now and then. I'm more of a fan of neighborhood dives, and friendly hole in the wall type places. I also can't believe the craft cocktail scene is not played out yet. That said: The things I like about Billy Sunday, the cocktails are good, but you pay for it to be good, so it better be. The space and art direction is nice. The place is classy. So if you're a classy person or want to appear classy this is the place to go. I say this would be a great drink place to go with a date, or very small group of friends for conversation. The things I don't like about it, are the food options and how much those food options cost. Since they don't have a kitchen, the food is prepared, and they are big on the things in jars variety. I didn't think the food was worth it. You could also say there is a fair amount of pretension in this place. Also they charge lot for a crap Schlitz beer, which I believe is a way to keep the rest of the Logan Square riff-raff away. read more

Wonderful cocktail bar with good eats as well! The bartenders are gurus of liquor, wine, and cocktail making. Our bartender made great recommendations for us based on what we had a taste for. Living proof is my favorite drink thus far! The place is dark, romantic but laid back and a good hang out spot for friends. Really, the bar area is very nice. The patio is quite pleasant as well during the summer months with consistently good service. The lasagna is probably my favorite entree on the menu, with the tomatoes and bread being my favorite appetizer. Share these two items with a friend and you will be happy! Pig ears are not great. Billy Sunday is a good spot but I do think it is on the expensive side for the area. read more

If you care about phenomenal cocktails, you should come to Billy Sunday. My husband and I visited the last time we were in Chicago--a year ago--and have been dreaming of returning ever since. This time, we sat at the bar. This was a mistake, as we had been planning to have just one cocktail each. We were so charmed by the bartender, Jeremy, that we ended up with more. We grilled him on types of amaro, barware brands, and his career as a bartender while he mixed up a multitude of cocktails without breaking eye contact. He gave us advice on what to stock our home bar with, but no home bar can match the experience of watching a master at work. Just the display of bitters, liquors, and tinctures alone is mesmerizing, and the cocktails remain unmatched. Suffice it to say, we'll be back next year. read more

Phenomenal craft cocktails, friendly bar staff, creative spin on classic small plates to nosh. The vibe is comfortable, but impressive enough to bring a date. A tiny dash of hipster, but I can forgive that. Otherwise, what's not to love? read more

Stopped in on a Sunday for an after beer drink. Cos a fancy cocktail is what you need after a visit to the Map Room, right? I did it. I had the Cocktail. Was told I had to try the Cocktail. That weird whale something (don't want to think about it too much) ingredient. Could I tell? Maybe? Or not really. Not sure. I thought about it. It was a good cocktail. It was quiet while we were there, service was top notch, I like the look of the bar. Really well done. I could easily stay for a few. Of the Logan big 3 cocktail bars I'd probably do Scofflaw first, then Whistler, then Billy Sunday. But that's not saying I wouldn't go back in a second, and am looking forward to it. read more

Fantastic. I read about the cocktails here in an old issue of the Chicago Magazine. We both really enjoyed our selections. I had "Don't Speak," and it was an intricate and pleasant treat. We also enjoyed the steak tartar, based on yelp and our server's reviews. It was delicious with a runny egg over and thin potato chips. I loved the dark and elegant feel of the bar. Very romantic. read more

A true cocktail lounge, with nice "bites" to keep your palate honest. Nice discovery in Logan Square, will definitely be back to try more of the cocktail menu and the bites. This place has killer cocktails! I love the vibe of this place. It's very reminiscent of one of my favorite places in San Antonio. My fiance and I went with our friend Sean who is quickly turning into a regular. Our bartender was Martin and he was so awesome. I'm a little bias because we found out he was Filipino so of course we loved him more. All drinks are made with precision and care. I tried the Daiquiri which is Rhum Agricole Blanc, Jamaican Overproof White Rum, Lime, Passion Fruit, Pineapple Bitters. This was so good. The Passion Fruit comes right through it's so yummy. I also had the Hoar's Frost which is London Dry Gin, Orange Curaçao, Lemon, London Dock Rum, Grenadine. It was a great stiff drink but I sure did fall in love with Daiquiri. We ordered some snacks throughout the course of the evening that were yummy morsels of goodness. We started off with some Pig Ears served with Malt Vinegared, served with Cornichon Aioli. It sounds crazy but really all is is crispy pig skin aka fancy homemade Chicharones. Crispy, piggy goodness. We also ordered the Croquettes - Corned Beef with Benton Bacon Gravy & Cornichon. Sean described them as a "Stuffed Mozzarella Stick but little nuggets." And that they were. Small morsels of crispy, salty nuggets of yum. The last snack we got was one of their "Things in a Jar." We decided on the Garbonzo Beans - Whipped, with Preserved Lemon & Pickled Pistachio. I loved this because it was like a super smooth, creamy hummus. We ordered the Artisanal Breads with it and this was gone in minutes. I'm glad I finally got to check out this place. Also because it has been raved about in the Red Eye and in Thrillist. This place is going to get so packed now but I hope that there will still be some space for me when I come. read more

Nice bar, good drinks, relaxed atmosphere, but be weary of the tab at the end - $12-$20 per drink, so not a place to drink all night unless your wallet can take the hit. Good deal on beers -$6 for big chilled mug read more

Billy Sunday - Don't be fooled, $40 YIKES, strong but regretting the price tag on this drink - Cocktail Bars Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

I worship Billy Sunday as if it were a true deity emerged from the ether to cast down all the false gods and pitiful philosophies people clung to for meaning before it. The Good Book holds all the wisdom one might ever need to achieve true happiness in life. A sip of storied amaro and a nibble off your daily monkeybread will bring peace to even the most troubled soul. The expert staff will guide you and comfort you. Go, and be converted. read more

Awesome place to go for cocktails and a snack. We ordered the steak tartare and the cheeseball. The tartare is one of the better ones if not the best I've had. The cheeseball was also very good. The sauce that comes on the side has a kick to it. The service is also wonderful. They are very friendly and knowledgeable. Can't wait to go back. read more

One of our new favorite local spots! Great drinks and great service! Definitely a plus that it doesn't feel pretentious or snobby.

Billy Sunday is fun. The drinks won't change your life (these days, you can't walk 10 feet without finding a 'hip cocktails' place in this city), but they are tasty and interesting. I also like what they do with their drinks menu, and I think most people would be able to find something or a few intriguing things on it. The small beer list is appropriate for the setting - not really the place to go to order a beer, but if you wanted to get one, there are a handful of decent options. I really like the space, and the long/narrow room helps what is a pretty small place not feel too congested. At the same time, it is a cozy, convivial place to be. Definitely worth a visit or two. For what it's worth, I'm not sure I totally agree with the Portland (either right coast or left coast) comparison, whether or not it is good or bad. To me, this is a place that feels like some of the drinks competition in Chicago, but with a bit of a different twist to try not to be a replica of what has already been done. In this regard, I think it's a success. read more

Right in my neighborhood and a pretty chill place to come for food and drinks! The drink menu is quirky and the food selection is definitely outside the box but awesome. Eat late like they do in Barcelona and you get to stop by Billy Sunday for pre-dinner drinks. Matthias Merges' pub is a fun place to hang out and sip a few and try a few bites. Drop by in summer and you have the option to sit outside and enjoy the sights of fabulous Logan Square. Yes, it's quite dim inside but I kind of like it; it's part of the atmosphere. Drinks for us included the aptly named Son of the Crusta, Grapes, Rice, and Wrath, and the more traditional Cocktail and Old Fashioned. The snack accompany was Artisanal Bread with a side of bread and butter pickles. Drinks were good and well priced although I preferred my cocktails at Yusho. Pickles were tangy and tasted comparably to pickles at Yusho. Next time, we'll sit at the bar and order more of the food to go with the drinks. read more

Atmosphere is pretty cool here, it's a big space so it has a very good intimate and cozy atmosphere. The drinks are so so but that could have been me ordering the wrong drinks. We had two drinks here, my first whiskey drink was a little too light for me and my second was a little too sweet. For as many cocktail bars we have in the city, these cocktails did not stand out for me. We ordered the pimento cheese dip and they told us that it didn't come with bread. I mean..I was a little confused by that. I mean seriously, if it doesn't come with bread, how would we have eaten it? So we ordered the bread on the side and ended up having a little too much bread. I mean we ate it because we paid for it...but it kinda ended up ruining our appetite for a real dinner. I think it would have come off better if they had just charged a few more dollars for the dip and threw a couple of slices of bread with it. Then you don't feel as ripped off in having to order an eight dollar order of bread. Service was pretty good, our waiter came by a lot to check on our drinks and food so that was really nice. I like the atmosphere and if we were in the neighborhood again, I wouldn't hesitant on coming back for a drink if there isn't a line. However, I wouldn't go out of my way to come here though. read more

I have to cry foul- I ordered a drink that purportedly serves 1-3. It was a delicious take on mango lassi, and came in a cute Russian doll with shaved ice, but I pulled out the glass and it was just a regular high ball glass! That size glass has clearly been established in the idustry as a standard serving for ONE person. Saying a regular bar glass serves 1-3 is a scam and a lie, and the drink costs, i sh!t you not, $35. For 6 or 7 oz of liquid. We got a bunch of food too, and this is probably the first time I've ever neglected to box the leftovers- I know we paid out the nose, but none of it was good enough to eat later. Service was actually very friendly. read more
