The other week we decided to do an armitage bar crawl and started off at Weegee's. It was a cool little vibe. Tucked away deep in Logan, you probably passed it a few times and never knew it was there. Really unassuming place that apparently was set up as a funeral home to front for the bar back in the days of prohibition. There may be a couple spirits still lurking around (I saw the flickering lights). There was one bar tender who was a master of his craft. The drinks were really good. There seemed to be a good mix of regulars and Logan locals. Certainly a place worth checking out. read more

Saturday night was my second time coming last time was pre pandemic. I like that it has a coat rack, a piano, that they play jazz. I like that classic cocktails are in the bars repertoire. First drink I got was a Sazerac. The second drink I got was a Wisconsin Old fashioned. I like that the ash trays are sizeable on the back patio. I'm not a smoker but ocassionally throughout the year I might smoke a cigar. The way the bar is designed is really beautiful you can tell that it's been a bar for a while in the best way. There are some bar designs you can just tell from a certain era. I also like they play jazz on the jukebox or sound system. read more

Cash only, which is always a little annoying, but overall this place is great. Cocktails are pretty solid, but they vary wildly depending on who is tending bar. Photo Booth is cute and accepts cards, which I always appreciate. They have a back patio, which is great for the summer. I would be a lot less critical if I didn't remember the place pre-pandemic, and it was better and the cocktail menu was more seasonal. Came for the old fashion cocktail, and boy it did not disappoint. Classic tasting with muddled cherries and orange. Also had a Manhattan and Wisconsin old fashioned. One of the only bars in Chicago to serve a Wisconsin old-fashioned cocktail. The atmosphere was laid back and had all retro vibes. The bartender was super cool and attentive. Pretty chill bar where you don't have to shout to hear your friends. Classy bartender, and I like the jazz they played. My usual test for a good bartender is how well s/he makes an Old Fashioned. I didn't see who made mine, but I wasn't impressed. The same goes for the Wisconsin Old Fashioned, however it is one of those drinks that you don't taste the alcohol, but it creeps up on you. Usually, the nicer bars are located east of Kimball but I had no clue that there was this finer one right on the opp side.. in fact, just walking distance for me. I came here on a chill Friday night just to explore around, check it off my list and I was actually pretty surprised by it. It took me a sec to figure this place out from the outside look of it, it has no big signs or sorts. Once inside, the interiors were pretty dim-lit, gave me a rather retro vibe. My immediate attention went to the shuffleboard which I ended up playing for most of the night. It was actually a lot of fun! Just ask the bartender for the necessary shuffleboard stuff and he'll be happy to give it to you. Also, it was free. Bartender was really nice, he answered couple of my questions about the cocktail menu and made me go for the lions tail based on my preference. Drink was beautifully done, strong but not overpowering and definitely not a 'hole in the wall' bar kinda drink. Basically he knew what he was doing. This is our go to place for top-notch cocktails. Bartenders Chris and Brian are masters at making any of the old classics and more complex cocktails. This is a neighborhood bar where you don't have to be an actual neighbor to feel at home. It has a bit of a vintage 40s feel. They also have a beautiful, reclusive outside patio. There's a cabaret singer, Tom Musick and his pianist that play there twice a month. It's like stepping back into that era when we listen to him sing in this ambiance with an awesome cocktail at hand. Every time I go here, I love this place more. Well crafted cocktails carefully made by well dressed, friendly, cute bartenders. Music that's unobtrusive, allowing for conversation. A great outdoor patio in the back to avoid loud SkeeBall revelers. This is a REAL bar. Not a lot of backwards baseball hats in attendance. If you are in Chicago, in need of a cocktail, don't want a crowd, like an old school bar that serves very nice cocktails, then Weegees should be on your short list. Chicago magazine rated this place in the top ten bars in Chicago. On most nights when you enter the Barman named Chris will be poised behind the bar dressed in bow tie and vest eager to mix your drink or make a recommendation. Chris moves with quiet elegance as he prepares your spirit of choice. It is a pleasure just to watch this man in action. The bar has a few tables and several high tops. They also have a long shuffle board game, which gets some people off their chairs. In the warm months they also have a patio in the back. Every other Thursday night a singer named Tom musick (stage name) arrives and performs. You can check Tom out on you tube. He writes his own stuff and if you like Tom Waites you will really enjoy his no charge show. They pass the hat after the show. I had been there many times and never caught Tom. Then one night, I stumbled in and it was showtime. He puts on a great act...call and find out if he is on and go early to get a seat.... There is ample great street parking.... Now remember I don't want everybody going here! Be sure an order a Vieux Carre (French quarter) cocktail. This is one of the best cocktail bars in the city. Chris and Brian make fantastic versions of the old time cocktails. The well thought out musical playlist creates a positive vibe reminiscent of a classic and classy old Chicago bar from the glory days of long ago. Plus, there are no televisions or gaudy beer signs to distract you from conversations with good friends. It's a low key place to be treasured and revered. read more

For a bourbon/rye lover, this place is a little slice of heaven. A couple of weeks ago, I had a rye old fashioned here and was blown away by the technique. It was a superb drink. The manhattans are good, too. Lately I've been adhering strictly to the phrase "Bourbon is for sipping, rye is for mixing" so I only drink cocktails when rye is around. But, if you like your whisky cocktails a little sweeter, there is also a good bourbon selection, including my favorite, Woodford Reserve. Which is always available for sipping, of course, and fine sipping it is. And of course they have a great selection of microbrews, superb gin/vodka cocktails, comfy barstools, and a 40's/50s jazz/rat pack musical vibe without any of the ratpack obnoxiousness. Its a shame that Chicago passed the no-smoking ban, because a cigarette or cigar is a manhattan's best friend. Fortunately, there is a rustic patio in back if you are boozing it up in the warmer months. As others have mentioned below, the only negative is that the location is not reflected in the prices -- they could stand to be a buck or two cheaper per drink, even with the top shelf liquor. For example, while they do have 22 year old Rittenhouse Rye at $10, you get barely a finger of booze for the serving. Show some love! read more

While in Logan Square, head west a little while on Armitage to find this stylish 1940s dive bar with lots of whisky and gin cocktails on the menu and $6 draft pours of 3 Floyds Gumballhead. There are no TVs, loud music or crowds of unruly people spilling drinks all over you, with a smartly appointed bar, all in a relaxed, chill environment perfect for having an intimate conversation and starting off a perfect date night. There's an impressive cocktail menu, and a shuffleboard table, with lots of cheap street parking right outside. I wasn't sure what to expect with their very unassuming exterior, and I definitely wasn't expecting such a nice lounge-style bar or such friendly, professional bar service. Great service with several 3 Floyds options, including my favorite on draft, and they take American Express. Highly recommended. read more

*Editing my original 5 star review* Since moving to Chicago this was a spot I've recommended countless times. It has my favorite photo booth in the city, they know how to make my favorite cocktail perfectly, and it's usually a relaxed environment (unless it's softball season). I've celebrated and mourned a lot of things in this bar over the past 6 years. For my past 4 birthdays I've brought groups here to end the evening. It's always been a swell time. This past birthday however is what's causing me to edit my original review. Since I'm still upset about it, I'm sharing so others don't have a similar experience. I brought three friends with me who happen to be sober now, within the larger group of twelve. When we all went up to order, one of my sober friends requested a mocktail. This was met with blank stares and exaggerated confused exchanged looks from the bartenders. They flat out said "No." When she asked again, explaining it could just be fruit juice, seltzer etc, they replied, "Well, we could make you a kiddie cocktail. You know, something for children." Needless to say, we were all pretty shocked. I kept apologizing profusely the rest of our very brief stay there. There was no reason for this. From the bar's perspective you're not losing money, in fact you're not losing any booze and your workers would still be tipped. There shouldn't be an issue. You're making $10-$12 on juice and soda. So what the hell is the problem? What was the point in disrespecting people? This was such a let down from the place I spoke so highly of and enjoyed for so long. Weeeeeeeee geeeeeeez! First of all, I like that when we walked in, there was great oldies playing on the stereo, I'm not talking about 1950s or 60s, think more 1930s and 40s, back to the time when men used to serenade women in order to woo them (or was that just in the movies). In any case, I loved the slow jazz walking into this bar and the elegance of the bartender. He kindly asked if we'd ever been here and we said no. He took us through the drink menu pointing out cocktails and beer. Their beer list was amazing. We asked what the more popular cocktails were and he gave us a few suggestions. I ended up ordering the "Albertin"... I really dont remember the name but I do remember that it was very strong and it took me forever to drink it. Also poured in a huge martini glass. The taste was good but definitely strong! After that drink I ordered a beer non-domestic which I love! Atmosphere was good, there were not a lot of people here on a Tuesday night (about 6) but everyone seemed nice and laid-back. Our bartender was so good, he made lemon drop shots for everyone at the bar free of charge and they were strong as well. Yum. Did I mention they have a photo booth? Oh yeah, the pics come out in black and white although good luck trying to get two people in the same picture, we tried twice and we still couldnt get it right. We might be a bit on the 'special' side. If it wasn't in such a questionable area, I'd come more often. We saw a hit and run while here. A car turned onto a side street and hit two parked cars, then drove away. Buzzkill! Well not really, we assessed the situation and kept the liquor coming. What had happened was, a few Yelps and I were out for the basketball the other day (Go Sports!). Heavily sauced, in a moment of forthcoming, brutal honesty, they suddenly admit they'd retired their Elite badges. [WHAT. THE. FUCK. ARE. YOU. TALKING. ABOUT. WILLIS.] Imagine the look of horror on my smug, elitist face when I came to the realization that I could potentially be spotted about town hobnobbing with a gaggle of internet has-beens. I knew we had to get away from the eagle statue immediately. But where could we continue imbibing without the threat of prying eyes? Before I know it, we're exiting an FX-35 and the one of us who was riding in the back has to be awoken from a narcolepsy-induced slumber. Oh yes, Weegee's. The only bar where I've ever seen my sister cut off by a bartender (after my brother-in-law mentioned she'd been overserved prior to her arrival - which caused a very uncomfortable yet amusing lovers quarrel). Great bar. Great bar. My wits about, I finally decide to order the drink I'd been eying my last couple visits, but never gotten around to: The Sit and Spin. New Holland Hopquila (you don't know what that is), Hum liqueur (you don't know what that is either), something else (I don't remember what that was). Anyway, this drink is a game-changer. The perfect combination. It's like smoking a cigarette while taking a shit. We have more drinks. Unwilling to acquiesce to the fact that we're now sans DD, West of Central Park, someone says, "We're deep in the shit. It's every man for himself getting back East. We'll rendezvous at the burrito place." This suggestion is quickly shot down. Salvation is found in American Cab and Carriage Company. Names have been changed to protect the innocent. read more

He's Going, He's Going, He died. Everything was great almost perfect. The decor was fun. They have an excellent drink selection, and decent prices. They play jazz lightly in the background. They even have shuffleboard and a vintage type photo booth. It's decently close to my neighborhood. Sounds too good to be true right? Well it is. The first night (thursday) was fine there was one guy working and he was friendly. The second time (friday) this other guy had so much attitude I couldn't even believe it. I was there with my friends who are all waiters and tip very well, and still the attitude. My friends noticed it early on and this is what my experience was: My friend asked if they could make car bombs which are a favorite among my friends. Well he gives us this look like we are disgusting for even suggesting and says uh no. This might as well have been paired with the hipster "hair flip". Then as they are about to close my friends and I are the only ones left and they yell "The crack shop (liquor store) next door closes in 5 minutes you're going!" with the same nasty attitude. We all look at each other and we're thinking seriously? What a let down. Apparently paying good money for drinks and tips doesn't get you anywhere with these d bags. Not as scary as advertised. I'd been curious to check this joint out for a while, but rumors of surly bartenders, exact orders and a too-school-for-cool crowd kept me away. Y'see, that's one of the advantages of being a cranky old man: you don't put up with bs. You smell it and you keep it moving. Well, that and my certified Carrie-esque reaction to youngster tomfoolery. It's not pretty. So, after a strikeout at a formerly beloved bar, I manned up and took my good friend to Weegee's. And, we had a great time. Yep. Even though she teetotaled it and I had a beer, all was well. The bartender was perfectly amenable to our requests, we scored a table by the door and settled in for an evening of conversation, jokes and people-watching. Yes, there are some attitudinal hipsters populating the establishment but more than anything, I saw a bar filled of 'regular-looking' patrons who were out to have a nice, chill evening. There was no loud music. No woo-hooing. No bro-ing. Just regular folks enjoying a deceptive large and ambitious beer/cocktail menu having a nice time being low-key. If you'd been skeptical about making the trek west of Kimball just to have a drink, I'm telling you not to be. The vibe is chill. The menu is impressive. The patrons mind their business. Awwww mannnnnnn. I love this place and recommend it to people all the time, but my last few visits have been less than amazing. I stand by everything I wrote in my initial review. This is a gem and it's totally worth checking out once, twice if you enjoy yourself. But when Yelp says you open at 5pm on Sunday and the doors are still closed at 7:15, that's not running "a little late." And if you have a credit card minimum ($20), it's not all that difficult to tell patrons beforehand or even toss up a little sign, is it? Lastly, I hope the owner reads this and absorbs all that his customers are saying: stop being a dick, dude. If you're having a bad day, bro, I'm here for you. I got a couch and a notepad. I do really like this bar, but after the owner, Alex Huebner, got in my face defending a regular tonight, I can't strongly recommend Weegee's any more. The good: the bar, the bartenders, the drink selection, shuffleboard. The bad: a patron told me to keep it down while playing shuffleboard. I noted that I was under no obligation to mind him and then the owner jumped in, puffed out his chest and insisted I leave. I was packing up the table anyway, but the owner persisted in running me out of the bar. It was probably the most unprofessional treatment I've received at any drinking establishment since I moved to Chicago seven years ago. Whatever. Again, I love the bar, but if the owner (who is omnipresent) disappeared, I wouldn't be greatly upset. Weegee's used to be the only bar in the neighborhood, but now that there are other options, I'd suggest spending your money elsewhere. read more

This is a gem in the lesser known part of town. What bugs me is that some folks feel a bit protective about this place....like folks from Uptown or Lakeview are really not good enough....or bad...depending upon how you look at it to patronize this place.........wha evr?!?! The bar is classic....and looks as if little has changed when it was first constructed (the bar that is...). Small, but with enough seating to have the place come alive late into the evening, this little gem is tucked away on Armitage deep in the Logan Square area. I am such a picky, miserable, cantankerous, judgmental bitch when it comes to bars that I rarely hand out 5 stars. It's safe to say, then, that Weegee's has fully earned it. It's been around forever and the space itself is absolutely lovely, as is the patio out back. The staff is ridonka friendly and the bartenders are fabulous. Drinks are reasonably priced (hellooooo $6 fancy cocktails, thank you!) and well mixed. Nice clientele, a photobooth, and no in your face televisions. Hooray! A great place to have a leisurely drink on your own with a book or to hang out with a group of friends, it's that kind of a joint. What elevates it to a 5 star, for me, however, is that I recently (drunkenly) fell over, injured myself and broke a glass and they made sure that Jeff and I got home safely. I keep hearing about this expression - "WTF" - and now, after having been to Weegee's I finally understand it. Seriously though, as a person with far too much experience drinking in bars, I left this place scratching the noggin. The staff seemed to be so on edge I wondered if they were harboring Nazi war criminals in the attic. It was a Saturday night and there was a decent crowd. Props for the bike racks out front, but I guess that goes hand in hand with the bearded, flannel clad clientele. I ordered a Makers with soda, splash of ginger and lemon. The owner said "Oh, you want a Presbyterian." I replied "No... I want a Makers with soda, splash of ginger and lemon." It's a "cocktail bar." Half-ginger and splash ginger ain't the same, pardner. It was a good cocktail in the end. The menu is seriously odd. Extensive, but about a quarter of it is crossed off, and it wasn't at all clear what the draft beer options were, even after getting up and going over to peer at the (turned about) tap handles in the dim light. The BF is still talking about the annoying jazz music, and he totally digs jazz, so I'm not sure what's up with that, but he has even MORE bar drinking experience than me, so I'll just let that one float. read more

Maybe I am not the best person to review this because I haven't been back in months, but I just have to put in my two cents that it was a huge disappointment. Everything is in place for it to be one of my regular haunts. It's got nice decor, good music, an excellent selection of booze and an attention to classic cocktails. Best of all, it's right by my house, which is great since I live on the west side of Logan Square, hardly a hipster haven. My problem is the piles of attitude my friends and I got the three times I have been there. I am no diva--I have worked in bars for twenty years and I know how to act/tip as a patron. I just can't believe the dismissive attitude I have gotten on nights where there are hardly any people there. You would think they would be welcoming of my patronage and money, especially since it is hardly ever crowded and it's in a sketchy area. Look, I would step over the body of a dead hooker to get a good cocktail in a warm and friendly atmosphere, but this isn't the place. Thankfully The Burlington opened up recently, and the Whirlaway is a short bike ride. read more

I f*cking love this bar. In an era where the classic, small, neighborhood bar is becoming an endangered species, this place continues to keep on keeping on. It's small, it's lowly lit, with one long bar against a wall, a few chairs and tables, a small bar (shelf, actually) for people to put drinks on against the wall opposite the bar, a lovely vintage looking photo booth, and OMFG, shuffleboard, complete with corn meal and metal pucks. The beer selection is OK on the + end, nothing bad, could be a bit better, but everytime I've been here, I've been able to find good, crafty stuff that makes me smile. The real deal here, though, are the cocktails. This place has all the cocktail offerings and panache of The Whistler or Scofflaw, without any of the nonsense associated with both places (long lines to get in, overpriced drinks, horrid clientele, etc). And it's the kinda place your drunk uncle would have hung out, circa 1963. Yes, it's a little out of the way, but you know what, that's not a bad thing at all. That keeps the sheeple away. This place is a destination that makes me love veering off the path. read more

This is truly a special spot. They have a delicious and extensive cocktail menu that will surely delight even the biggest cocktail snob. Offering rare liqueurs and drinks old and new, you won't be disappointed. Weegee's reminds me a bit of the California Clipper, in that it is dimly lit and cozy offering an old -world atmosphere playing jazz. The staff super friendly and down to earth. Also, they have an outdoor seating area in the back that is perfect or summer nights playing board games and having stimulating conversations with friends. I love this place. After I made the move from Ukranian Village (renter) to Logan Square (homeowner) I was sad that I was leaving behind my favorite little Sneak-a-Joint bars. The kind where you wind up at the end of the night with questionable companions and an inability to walk more than 2 blocks home. Enter: Weegee's. Love, love, love. Good atmosphere, people, and drinks. Especially the lack of judgment when my companion leaves his credit card there at the end of a particulary raucous night, or when I sometimes drink there solo dolo while waiting for someone (or, lets face it, when everyone else goes home and leaves me there!) (And P.S.: To the reviewers hatin on my neck of the 'hood: Please watch your comments, people live here. Show some respect for those of us who wanted to stop renting and get our very own piece of the American dream in the form of our very first grown-ass woman condo with ceiling fans and crown molding and in-unit washers and dryers, even if it meant venturing west and leaving our "hipper" hoods behind. I think maybe I'm the only person on the planet who doesn't get the appeal of this place. I'll admit, it's cute and has a really cozy feeling to it but other than that, why would I trek all the way here to pay way too much for drinks and be treated like absolute crap? One Manhattan was 12 dollars. Twelve. I haven't paid that much for a Manhattan since I moved from, you guessed it, Manhattan. On top of it, the bartender was rude and stuck up. I've never felt less welcome in a bar, seriously, and I've been to some stupid bars. This place only gets two stars because I really liked their patio and because some people I love think it is great, which makes me think it has to have SOME kind of appeal. I have a long list of bars that I I can't wait to go back to and Weegee's is not on that list. Perhaps I will try it again, but most likely I won't. As I looked for Weegee's, I drove right past it. The small corner bar was, indeed, small. I was going to meet a date for drinks. And I have to be honest...I legit thought my date was going to be lame if he was bringing me here. But then I walked in and was transported back to this old speak easy type of feeling. Primary votes were that day and a group of locals were there cheering on a neighborhood rep in his quest for political glory. So, that was cute to see the community coming together. The drinks were delish. The two of us probably had a good 5 drinks each, which was well beyond my 2 drink rule. It wasn't loud or obnoxious, and the laid back vibe was nice. In fact I found myself so comfortable up in hrrr that I almost just lit up a smoke. Ain't that a maybeishouldgohome bitch? Weegee's is truly amazing if you can get over the "Grandpa's booty smell". A few weeks ago, I was walking to Weegees with my man and a couple of friends to enjoy some nice cocktails on their patio. We were a few blocks away and an SUV threw eggs out of their window at us, luckily missing completely. Needless to say, when you've had eggs thrown at you, the only thing that can make you feel safe again is to pony up to the bar. Weegees mix-mastas are fantastic and knowledgeable on the drink menu. I've tried many different cocktails and have never tasted anything horrendous. ACTIVITIES!! There's a shuffleboard table here and a photo booth, both adding to the experience of this bar. The music selection is tops and sets a very chill mood, so do not come here if you are ready to rage on a Friday night. You will piss everyone off... Weegee's may be filling the hole in my heart left by what's become of the California Clipper. I'm still feeling burned by that, I won't lie, but Weegee's is slowly drying my tears. The atmosphere is chill but fun. They manage to have shufflboard without the bro-factor and the photobooth is in excellent condition. No streaky or blown out photos here. I'm looking at you, Quimby. Bartenders are friendly and know their stuff. Cocktails are delicious and interesting, though maybe just a dollar on the high side for the neighborhood, not that that stops me from going there.
