The drinks: generally great. Same for the food, except for the pig's ears. Schlitz for $5: If you want to keep out the people on a budget, don't insult them while you're at it. read more

Probably the best compliment I can pay to Billy Sunday is that you would have no clue the place was only officially open one night when we went in there. Operations were smooth, the staff was up to speed on the menu, and everything looked like it was in just the right place where it had always belonged. We started with a Daiquiri and the Pisco Punch. Both drinks were strong. Not "that woman who curls more at the gym than you and makes you feel lame" strong, but "guy you see lifting giant stones on ESPN8 at 3AM" strong. But not out of balance. The alcohol was potent and notable, but in no way overpowering on the palate. The food was damn near impeccable, as you might expect from a place run by Matthias Merges. The same quality of food found at Yusho is on display at Billy Sunday. The pig ears were popping and crackling when they arrived at the table. The croquettes with bacon gravy were salty and meaty and only failed in not replenishing themselves when I finished them. The rabbit was cooked perfect, not an easy feat when dealing with such a delicate animal. The desserts were both wonderful. The peanut butter donuts were small donut balls that exploded with flavor. So why only four stars? Because there's just a few small issues that could be fixed in time. Service was good, but the timing was off. If you're going to mostly do small plates, it is important that you space them out. We were hit with 5 plates at one time, with barely enough room to fit them. This might not have been such an issue but some of these were hot dishes, so there was a sense of trying to rush through to get everything while it was at perfect temperature. Another small improvement would be with the jars. The jar of whipped chicken liver was great. The quail egg and the raisin mostarda mixed for a wonderful flavor. But because there was nothing at all to spread the mixture onto it became overwhelming after a few spoonfuls. I know there's an artisanal bread course on the menu, but it would be nice to have something with the jars, even if that meant bumping the price up another dollar. Eating liver mousse like ice cream is a bit strong even for a glutton like me. That said, we'll definitely be back. This was a great night out, and would be fun with a bigger group to try everything on the menu between us. read more

Cute atmosphere. Pretty great cocktails. The vibe inside is dark, hipster, intimate. Lots of two person tables, but the music is slightly loud, so I'd say it's a good place to bring a good friend or significant other, but maybe not a first date spot. I got the box lunch cocktail, because I'm a sucker for unique drinks. This goat's milk drink was very sweet but not cloying and not too thick. Usually drinks like baileys or White Russians are too much for me, but the box lunch was great. My boyfriend got a rum drink with burnt sugar bitters that was really great, similar in flavor to an old fashioned. Our second drinks weren't as big of hits. The aquinas starts off sour with a bitter aftertaste, that I liked but my boyfriend didn't. The other drink was a cocktail with wormwood that tasted like a fancy Malort...but I guess we should've figured. Final note: we got the sweet and salty peanuts and they were really great bar snack food. read more

I LOVEEEEEE this place, like I am so in love with it. My husband and I have come here a couple times and most recently we brought my cousin who lives out of state here and he thought it was super dope as well. Their spirit selections alone are amazing. I really enjoy seeing the bartenders do their thing with the drinks. We have gotten several food dishes that were all amazingly done as well. The service is absolutely wonderful and the bartenders are all amazing and helpful and willing to give their opinions on the different drink and food items. They are all extremely knowledgeable as well. This is our favorite spot in the Logan Square area!!! read more

I've been to Billy Sunday a bunch of times and it used to be one of my favorite places to grab a nice cocktail in the neighborhood, but I went back recently on a Tuesday night and it seems it's gone down hill. Most notably the terrible service (along with the only average Old Fashioneds - which used to be awesome, by the way) I was basically first ignored at the bar, and then switched to a table where they forgot our order. We finally get it and more friends join us. We order some beers and whiskeys which take FOREVER to come out. (like 20 minutes for beers?) When the drinks FINALLY come, the order is wrong. They forgot a mixed drink, but gave us an extra shot and brought the wrong beers. To top it off the server was snappy with us. AND they charged us for everything in the end, even the drinks we didn't originally order. It's amazing how terrible service can really bring you down. I'm sorry Billy Sunday it's over between us. I don't plan on coming back anytime soon. read more

Classy, creative drinks and shots. A little pricey at times but the service and vibes are worth it. Really nice atmosphere and decor.‍ They used to have a drink that they served in one of those stackable Russian doll figurines. I went back a couple months after my first time here though, and I believe they had removed that one from the menu. It was so unique though. Bring back the doll please! read more

Cool, Classy Spot right on The Square! I really liked this place but did not try any food so I can only go four stars for now/ will update asap. Inside, It's ClaSSSY/ Great Bar.. Especially the Bar Top itself, interior is super cool and if you're into photography it's a must see! They have like a "Host/Doorman" when you walk in which is a nice touch. Here it's all about Craft Cocktails and they take great care in making them.. lets put it this way, they have like four bartenders for like a 12 top bar. Cocktail List was about 12 deep as was the Beer List-- Def some pretty obscure brews on hand here. It's rather small inside and I'm positive it gets very crowded at peak times--can't wait to go back and try the food! GTFJD read more

I like Billy. I like Sunday. I like booze. I like Sunday Fundays. I love Billy Sunday. There's nothing like duckin' into a bar mid-Sunday afternoon and feeling like you've just entered a sultry, hip, Saturday night scene. I lost half a day in Billy Sunday and I'm totally content with that. From the eclectic drink menu with the utmost creative names, swanky leather bound booth of cocktails, and the endless types of fernet, I was in heaven. And let's talk about the vintage stemware. It's enough to make any girl envious. Service was decent. Overly friendly? Not so much. But, the drinks were strong and absolutely delicious, so some salty 'tude didn't necessarily bother me. Either way, I'll be back for some One Step and Box Lunches. Drink on friends. read more

The Square is a changin' and places like Billy Sunday change it for the better. Their tone is something I can't quite put my finger on but it's somewhat turn of the century vintage but clean and minimalist too. I definitely dig the vibe in here over the loud and crowded clusterfuck that is the Whistler on weekend nights. I found the cocktails here just as good and the host and server were very friendly given the busy pace of the joint. Hoar's Frost is not only fun to say but fun to drink as well. I'm not afraid to admit I like my cocktails on the fruity citrus side and that one really hit the spot. The runner up for me was their Plank Road which is a good drink for people who want to drink tequila but hate tequila. Even if the whole vintage-themed cocktail craze irks you take a moment to consider what other kind of shitty Lincoln Park of Lakeview style could be here. Yea. No. Beware that this isn't a stand around with your bros kinda place. They prefer you sit and the tables aren't very big so I wouldn't come here with more than three other people. read more

I love a good craft cocktail. And this place has plenty. Lots of different drinks to choose from, and the atmosphere is really chill. I've been here several times and have brought out of town guests as well. Billy Sunday is home to one of the best Old Fashioned's I've had (second only to RPM Steak), and I've yet to try a sip I didn't like. Do yourself a favor - if you see the 100 proof bourbon on the drink list - don't hesitate. Get it. read more

Stopped in for a cocktail on the patio on a lovely weekend day and enjoyed my experience. My boyfriend and I split the Dill Smith and the Rabbit Food. We loved the unique flavors of each drink, particularly the Dill Smith. I'd definitely return to try more creative cocktails. read more

Solid Place. I went here a few months ago and found the place annoying. The host, servers, and bartenders were all a bit over the top. I went with a friend last week who is a regular, and while the bartenders were still cocky when it came to refusing to make drinks. Like those chains that say "have you dined with us before" this rejection of customer call drinks is pretentious. Dude. Really? I can see rejecting requests for Miller Lite, or Jack and Coke, but rejecting a Ramos Gin Fizz or a Blood and Sand is just rude. Despite my critique, I have quite a bit more respect for the bartenders and the concept than I did a few months back when I just found this place to be annoying in a field with so many good cocktail joints. I still rank it below the other places, but it is growing on me. read more

Billy Sunday is PERFECT for romantic date night. It's poorly lit. The drinks are just at or below the $12 Chicago average. I have had several cocktails here and they all seem to have a different glass which is fun. BANANA PUDDING IS FREAKING AMAZING. Do yourself a favor and order it. read more

Pretentious. Fad-ish. Overpriced. Cramped. Exclusive. Ok, so Billy Sunday is great for neighboring businesses to catch the overflow that can't fit into the tiny interior. Which, in turn, is good for the area and good for the economy. It's a sure sign of a healthy economy when $12+ cocktails equate wait times of over an hour in a former blue-collar neighborhood. Great for dates? Yes, on an off-night with readily-available seating. Otherwise, Hipsterette and the Pashmina Crew will hang out all night Instagramming tumbler after tumbler of booze in the dim light. The host is rather gruff, but I realize he has to be that way when he's working with 20 seats and no standing room. The food selection is really only good for snacks; this is not a place for a true dinner. read more

I love this place. Creative cocktails and really cozy decor. They hosted a mad hatter party around Halloween and it was the highlight of my weekend! Super friendly bartenders and the host is more than welcoming...he even found my lost phone! Cocktails are on the pricier side for Logan, but well worth it considering how well they are curated. read more

I have to say I was a little disappointed. I had high expectations based on the hype I've heard in the past 5-6 months, but finally going here, it just wasn't that impressive. Came here on a Friday at around 7:30-8pm. The service was incredibly slow despite being there before the rush. Our food came about 10-15 minutes before our first cocktails did, and we waited about 20-25 minutes for those. The onion and eggplant jam we had was OK, but you have to order and pay for the bread separately which I thought was strange considering every other place I've ordered "stuff in jars" from (or some kind of spread) comes with at least a few toast points or crackers. The drinks themselves were pretty good. They're definitely on par with the other great cocktail places in Chicago. Probably my favorite drink was the one they put in the coconut. Not too sweet, which is perfect. Overall, the staff were nice and I could tell they felt bad about us waiting for our drinks, but this wasn't really what I thought I was getting into. Maybe a bad night -- I'll try coming back again. read more

Super cool, hip place! We felt like ballers when we came on a weekday afternoon (on vacation) and were the only people there... Like we'd found a sweet little piece of heaven designed just for us. We asked for a flight of their beers and they said they'd never done that before, but happily accommodated us and priced it fairly. We loved everything. My friend was hungry but has a simpler palette and didn't see anything of interest for her so we skipped the food. I'm a little more adventurous and while I didn't try the food, it sounded delicious. The patio area was so nice - perfect for a warm summer day. The inside looked like it had a perpetual evening thing going on, but in the best kind of way. Really excellent service. read more

Billy Sunday - They designed a beer flight just for us!! How cool is that - Cocktail Bars Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

I've always written off amari because I tried it once and it reminded me horribly of the awful herbal medicines my Chinese grandmother would force feed me as a sickly child. and I've never had my eyes pried open the way that I did at Billy Sunday. At places like this, you must sit at the bar. You must talk to the bartenders-- they are so so so willing to chat and impart their knowledge onto poor, ignorant newbies like me. I was super impressed by their house tonics and their willingness to let me and my drinking buddy sample different liqueurs while explaining the differences and how they pair them. I was seriously floored. I love being reminded of all the things in the world that I still do not know. read more

I never venture in this direction...only because I don't know where to go. But I have friends that are local to the area and regulars at Billy Sunday. Conclusion...need to come more often!!! My fellow yelp friends are always posting pictures and checking in at this fine establishment. And I can see why! When you walk in there is a chic but euro vibe that I immediately fall in love with. From the beautiful ceiling to the barware everything catches your eye. The bartenders here are very good at what they do and understand the art of a great cocktail. I definitely recommend making your way over whether you live near or far it's worth the trip! read more

The decor of this place is awesome. I really liked the drinks! This place is very similar [in drinks] to violet hours. strong strange cocktails. I had the old fashion but I wasn't a huge fan. the waiter made it seem like it was so special there but it just tasted more like whiskey. Which is fine but I was expected something more unique I guess. The drinks are 10$, which is cheaper than violet hour, and they don't have some dumb ass bouncer in the front not letting anyone in haha. They bouncer was extremely nice and got us seated relatively quickly. I didn't get to try to the food but the people around me were eating and it looked delicious. Definitely have to try it again. read more

Somehow this place has been open only two days but is already mobbed with people, and has also been named one of the best new bars in the country. I will cut them little slack since they just opened and they were swamped when I went to go check it out on Friday. They quoted us about an hour wait, but then called 20 minutes later saying there were some seats. This would have been find, had we just not placed an order for food and drinks at Dunlay's next door. But, then when we arrived there actually weren't any seats to begin with, explained the host. Nope, he said he called me to let me know there was now room in the bar for me to stand, haha. It took some work to get a drink ordered, since people were lined up at least 2 deep at the bar. But any concerns melted away once a cocktail hit my lips. I started with the Old Fashioned, which was expertly made, very well balanced, and surprisingly smooth considering the punch it packed. About halfway through the drink a few seats opened up at the bar, which we managed to snag. The drinks tasted even better once I was sitting down. It was also much, much easier to get a second drink order placed once you had an actual place at the bar. My second drink was the oddly-named "Cocktail" which was also a whiskey-based drink. It was great watching our bartender whip of the drinks with such care and precision. After two drinks it was last call, and we decided it was time to leave. Considering how drunk I was, these cocktails have to be some of the best ABV/Dollar values I've ever come across. I'll be back soon, though I shudder to think how much busier this already super busy bar will get, once the general public finds out about it. read more

We've been 3 or 4 and each and everytime was a 5 star night. The "Cocktail" is a bourbon based drink that is crazy good. And the last time we were there they had Harvey Wallbangers. This blast from the past was sinfully good. While we were there they also had oysters, and these were seriously some of the best oysters I have ever had in my life. Get the steak tartare, too. I guess what I'm trying to say in Billy Sunday is a top 5 cocktail bar for me. Boom. That just happened, folks. 94/365 read more

Barrel Aged Genever, Sac'Resine, Lemon, Carmelized Orange Gomme and "Galliano" Sachet. You won me over. Billy's HARVEY WALLBANGER, served in a stainless goblet. Yes, and yes, and yes. We tried almost everything on the food menu in our group of four, and we loved it all, albeit overly simple for the price, but hey, they gotta pay for them fancy lights. Great place for a date, great place for a group of friends. The staff keep their finesse close to the vest, doling it out at just the right moments. Bravo ! I didn't even mind dropping $250 here for an evening out, it was just that enjoyable. So Billy, you keep doing what you're doing. I love you. read more

I've visited this place a couple of times and I really want to like this place but I always feel guilty giving them my money afterwards. I have no problem paying up for good service but all this place is over priced drinks with rude service attached to it. If I wanted to receive all that attitude with my experience at this place. I could've had easily gone to a swanky bar in river north. This place should invest a little more time in their customer service. read more

So wifey and I went here last night last minute and a couple friends joined us. We were looking for some specialty cocktails and just a chill atmosphere ... and boy we found it. This place is fantastic. I cannot say enough great things about it. We got there and were welcomed right away by a very friendly host and accommodated some seating for us. The lighting in this place set an excellent mood, it very dim and candle lit. I am a sucker for this. Its not a huge place, it consists of mostly the bar and 2 seaters, but they will accommodate a table of four here and there. The music in the back was a great mix, at one point I could've sworn I hear some old school Jay-Z and wu-tang. I was on cloud 9. The service is excellent, constantly making sure you stay hydrated, very important. Our server was very nice, had great knowledge of the menu and did a good job with recommendations. She gave us descriptions of the cocktails and snacks. She definitely helped make our evening a good one. So the menu consists of an assortment of various mixed drinks, beer and wine. You have a rotation of excellent micro-brews on tap, a handful of red, white and sparkling wines. The mixed drinks are made with excellent small batch spirits and mixers that will blow you away. The combinations put together are excellent. What really blew me away though, were the house made tonic drinks and housemade "Booze Sodas" They make their own tonic and combine them with a variety of different flavors. They also make their own cola. I had a fernet and cola and it was excellent. They even bottle it themselves. We enjoyed the Kent and Hart tonics. Two excellent cocktails. I also e On the back of the menu there are a few late night snacks that go until midnight. We enjoyed the artisan bread, the chicken liver spread, beef tartare and mac and cheese. Every was delicious. i especially enjoyed the chicken liver spread with some scrumptious crusty bread. It was on point. Over all this place as amazing, we had such a good time there and will definitely be back in the near future. Oh and if you're feeling gully, ask for "The Good Book" if you're into rare fernets and scotch, you will enjoy the read. Do it! and do it again! read more

Fernet, I barely knew ye. If you ask for the Big Book, you will find SIX pages of fernet. I erroneously thought Fernet-Branca was the only version available. The bartender told me Fernet is as varied in flavors as rum or whiskey. We got a flight to sample. I'm going to pay more close attention to liquor coming out of Milan from now on. Check out the Box Lunch if you are an egg nog lover. This cocktail is made with delicious goat milk that has been steeped in spices. The bartenders are awesome. They know their liquor. This is a great hideaway for those who can appreciate a finely crafter cocktail and well aged spirits. read more

Billy Sunday is a very chic, very trendy cocktail bar. It reminds me of many of the trendy cocktail bars that have popped up in Chicago over the last decade--Violet Hour, the Whistler, Scofflaw, etc etc. This one fits right in, with a few added bonuses. To start, they bottle some of their cocktails here. I enjoyed a guava daiquiri, which was totally delicious. My husband enjoyed a bottle of whiskey sour, which he also enjoyed. A friend had this weird but totally delicious drink that was super interesting on the palette--tomato water? some kind of booze? honestly it was so delicious and light and healthy tasting it didn't take like a cocktail. Delicious. Bar was comfortable and it wasn't too loud. Would definitely recommend this place for an after dinner drink! read more

This place has an enticing, seductive energy. It oozes class and sophistication, in a chic yet casual sort of way. From the moment I walked in, I felt a warm welcome. The host was friendly, polite and handsome. He knew his job and how to do it. When I arrived, he greeted me with a big smile, a kind hug, then escorted me to a table, while I waited for my friend to arrive. The drink menu is intimidating because this is not your average vodka/gin/tequila bar. The ingredients are complex but the results are delicious. We enjoyed a round of the Plank Road, which is a smooth yet flavorful tequila drink, and a far cry from a margarita. I would definitely order this drink again and the price was fairly reasonable ($10). Bottom line: I highly recommend Billy Sunday as a perfect place to meet for a drink, although next time I will try the grub, which looks to be just as unique as the drinks. read more

Billy Sunday is my favorite new(ish) bar in Logan Square. It is small and does not have a very big noticeable sign, so if you are not looking for it you might not see it! If you enjoy unique cocktails, you will love Billy Sunday. Ambience: Dim romantic lighting, small intimate space, and rustic decor. The bar shelves are filled with old, interesting bottles, oil wick teapots, and all sorts of neat antiques. It is very small and narrow, so not recommended for big groups. Food: I have not had dinner here, but I have heard good things from friends who have. The Pot Pie seems to be what everyone enjoys. I've had dessert here before, and truthfully, it was good but unremarkable. The menu is changing often, so if you don't see something you want to order, you may the next time. Drinks: The cocktails are what truly shine here, and make it worth a trip in rain, sleet, snow, or whatever else the Chicago weather gods decide to bombard us with. I recommend consulting with the bartender on what your likes are before ordering. I have been here quite a few times and try something new every time. Like the food menu, the cocktail menu is often changing with new, innovative drinks. The bartenders take a lot of time and skill truly *crafting* each cocktail, something that is very impressive to watch them do. The price for each cocktail is very reasonable considering the quality you are getting. Service: Even though the bar is located in hipster central, I have found this bar to be very laid back, welcoming, and not over-the-top as some other bars in Logan. The staff here are always very friendly and helpful, and service is quick and accommodating. I intend on returning soon. read more

Horrible service last night! I've been here many times and sat at the bar without any issues, so when I was out with some friends last night I eagerly suggested we stop for just a quick drink since they usually have the best cocktails! The bar was full so we waited by the hostess stand for a table - a guy just came up and abruptly said "I don't have any seats outside." No "Hello" or "How are you tonight?". Really rude. We told him we would sit wherever, so he cleaned off a table in the back and sat us without menus. We waited for a bit and finally a server came up to our table and asked if we were ready to order a drink. We had to point out to her that we didn't even have menus. We waited again for her to bring some and we quickly decided on our drinks, but the server disappeared for over 20 minutes so we couldn't even place our drink order! My friends were really annoyed but I pointed out that they were busy -- but then we looked over and saw her standing at the bar texting on her cell phone!! It was incredibly annoying. By the time we'd finished one drink and paid, we'd been there nearly and hour and a half. So much for a quick stop, I won't be suggesting this place anytime soon. read more

Read as a 4.5 rather than a 5 -- but this place was really enjoyable. When I went (Friday night on the early side) it wasn't too crowded. The host organizes bar seating and after a few minutes my friend and I were able to grab out seats. I ordered the Fool's Gold (Whiskey, Honey, Lemon, Chamomile Soda) and it was a 5 star drink. It was damn tasty, and was up there with one of the better drinks I've had in Chicago. For my second drink I went with one of the draft cocktails, which I did not enjoy as much. It must be noted that the bartender went off menu and made my friend a drink, a boulevadier, which was fantastic. That added touch is what makes this place an almost 5. The location is hip and is centrally placed in Logan Square right near the square itself. I definitely recommend this place and I was very impressed with their mixed cocktails. read more

Pricey but delicious cocktails. I had the fool's gold and it was wonderful and refreshing. I'm not usually a fan of whiskey, but this was perfect with the chamomile and honey comb. My husband had a sip and liked it so much that he ordered it for his next drink. The chicken liver mousse and chips are not to be missed. They have a lovely outdoor little area as well. Our server was lovely, friendly, and extremely helpful. She noticed our table was wobbly before we even did and she fixed it. She also asked before we even thought to ask if we'd like more toast for our chicken liver mousse. She was what every server should be. We will be returning for sure! read more

Billy Sunday - Cocktail Bars Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

The patio was pretty busy on a Monday night, but we opted to sit inside, where some classy, jazzy music was playing. As it got later in the night, and the inside was getting busier, the music became more upbeat and rockish. I ordered the Kent, which is a gin and tonic with lemongrass cocktail. This drink was pretty dang strong, I had to sip on it slowly, which is good since I usually drink cocktails too fast. Tried the Hoar's Frost too which was a tart cocktail, and the Old Ivory Egg, which was a brain scratcher. There's supposed to be tomato in it, but yet it was more of a clear color, with no hint of any red. This seemed more like a cold soup to me because it was served in a little cup bowl, had an asparagus sticking out of it, and was savory. I couldn't taste the alcohol at all! Service was good. Three stars just cuz it was meh, maybe because there were such high ratings that I expected something more. The drinks didn't stand out compared to any other place in Chicago. Also, the ice cream in the Billy Sundae was practically frozen. Urgh. read more

Yes! A bar not too far from my house that has great drinks and playing neo-soul?!! I'm in heaven or love or both! I'm in heavenly love

Billy Sunday is a quaint establishment with a small but thoughtfully-selected menu. Their use of mismatched china was a nice touch that did not go unnoticed. As a previous reviewer said, if you want a table at Billy Sunday, it's best to visit with no more than 4 people. We came with an even larger party (5) so we had to wait for a table on an early Sunday evening. Albiet, when another friend joined us, putting us at a headcount of 6, the manager (Patrick) didn't hesitate to provide us with another chair so we could all squeeze in. The chicken liver was tasty though I felt the quail egg was superfluous, and it doesn't come with bread. You have to order it separately. That said, the artisanal bread was plentiful and delicious. And our main dish, the braised rabbit POT PIE, was phenomenal! (Warning: Only after we finished, practically licking the remaining morsels from the cast iron skillet, did Patrick mention how many calories are in the dish!) read more

Went here last week to show an out-of-town friend what great cocktails are. Neither of us know much about cocktails so I ordered something with one recognizable ingredient, gin, the hoar's breath. My friend asked the waitress to recommend something that wasn't too strong, she suggested a couple different cocktails and also the fermented soda. My friend enjoyed her cocktail, but now I definitely want to go back to try the fermented soda. We also ordered a plate of artesian breads, which came with 4 or 5 different types of bread and were amazing. They came out warm with butter and salt. The ambiance was great. We got there early on a Saturday evening, so it was quiet and perfect for catching up. The cocktail glasses and bread plates were all different and vintage-y. The walls were covered in great old timey photos. Overall pretty great. Didn't blow me away, but met my expectations. I'll definitely head over there the next time I'm in the mood for a cocktail. read more
