Entrance is inside of Lonesome Rose. The door is in the hallway between the main restaurant and bar. I'll reiterate what every review says and tell you it is a crowded little spot. Came here on a whim with friends on a Friday around 9, and it was pretty packed. The drinks are good but it was hard to get the bartender's attention with so many people there. I was surprised by how young they seemed too, but idk if that's how it always is. We did snag a table though! Will definitely come here again, probably only if I'm going to Lonseome after tho. You walk in and it's so friggin' dark you can barely see anything, I walked right past the person checking IDs. So...if you've put on a few pounds since your profile pic or are having a bad hair day, this is a great date spot! They had some cocktails that sounded fun but being a beer chick, I stuck with the brews. They had some good options on tap and prices were incredibly reasonable. Draft Gumballhead from 3 Floyd's for $5? Yes, please! Bartenders were great but man some of the clientele are douchey. A group came in right after us SCREAMING non stop, already wasted beyond belief at 7pm and one girl kept saying to her friend WHAT'S THE PROBLEM!? CAN I NOT BE LOUD IN HERE!? It was a nightmare, I couldn't even hear who I was with because they were screaming and they kept shoving themselves all up in my space. Great place, good drinks, small menu. Golden Teardrops is located under Lonesome Rose. You'll have to go outside, turn onto Henry Street, go to​ the alley and down some stairs. Then you're there! The drink menu is small but mighty. The bar is also on the small side but has delicious drinks and is a great place for a first date or date night. We ordered several different drinks. I don't remember the drink names, but the bar offers drinks made with different liquors​. I loved the Mezcal drink; I wish I remembered the name.​ I love Land and Sea Dept. and their other business and this fits in seamlessly into their MO (cool spots, great drinks, see and be seen ambiance). As others have said, it's sexy at Golden Teardrops. Tip- If you are on the waitlist for Lonesome Rose you can come down and have a drink at the bar. It's rare when a bar's drink menu is an artform while remaining no nonsense. I'm not one for fruity drinks with a whole orange tree on top of it, so this menu is definitely one for my taste. I had the New York Cocktail and my boyfriend got the Hot Flash (or is it Hot Flashes), and they were both outstanding. After our first round, we decided to get dirty martinis, just because they seemed to have a good handle on the classics. It was a bit too vermouth-y for my taste. A couple of housekeeping items to take care of here. It's dark, which is fine if that's what you're looking for. Now I'm talking dark, like Hollister 2005 dark. Also, these drinks do contain a good amount of liquor, so be careful if you're not used to that sort of thing. read more

I could really see myself coming here regularly. It's small, dark and intimate. Almost mysterious if you will. Golden Teardrops is nice, but simple and the drink menu isn't miles long. What a location. Secluded entrance. Minimalist design indoors with black paint and a bar with lovely varnish. Intimate setting. It's not tiny but far from the big. The two bartenders were attentive and proficient with service. After a while some middle aged guys came in and were they a lively bunch?! We talked about favorite tacos, mexican restaurants and sexual assault. The last topic was discussed tenderly and with nuance. Stopped in on my last trip to Chicago, and had so much fun had to go back another time! It's a small, intimate venue that is very very dark. I really enjoyed their cocktails. The drinks were inventive, complex, and generally spirit-forward. It was obvious the bartenders took pride in making their drinks, and I appreciated the care they put into each one. My favorite drink was the Thunderstorm! You can tell they care about the little details like perfectly crystal clear ice, it really added to the presentation. Advice to management: please get different candle holders. The current ones get blown out way too easily. Each night we had multiple candles go out from the AC turning on, someone talking quietly, or just looking at the candle the wrong way. It was clear that other groups/patrons were having issues with their candles as well. With how dark the bar is, when a group loses their little tea light their whole area goes black, and it was annoying to keep having to find someone to relight them again. read more

I'm not sure if it was just the day or if that's how it always is but the music was unfortunately more annoying than two cats fighting at 3:00 in the morning. Maybe not the garbage truck at 3 am ear screeching, but it was up there. This is a terrible metaphor but my point remains. Great little venue with a good selection and a neat experience but when I can't hear myself order in a room slightly larger than a closet, the $12 drink is a lot less enjoyable. Lonesome Rose was really crowded and we weren't that excited by the cocktails on the menu, so we went downstairs to Golden Teardrops - loved it. In particular the Jushu, a mezcal cocktail with lime and honey, was fantastic - super smooth to drink. Love that it was served chilled but strained and no ice. I also tried the Jack in the Box - apple brandy, lemon, and pineapple, and thought it was just ok. Should have gotten another Jushu! We didn't experience any of the attitude that others have mentioned. We arrived around 8pm on a Saturday night, and were fortunate to have 2 seats at the bar free up shortly after we arrived. Summary: Good, but non groundbreaking, Throwback cocktails in a dim and almost confusing atmosphere. I came here after dinner at Lonesome Rose. The back alley entrance alluded to a more exclusive place, although there is definitely a sign letting you know where you are. When we first walked in our eyes had to adjust, because it was bright and sunny outside, and it was VERY, very dark inside. It's called Golden Teardrops, so I though there would be a bunch of gold everywhere, but really it's mostly blacked-out decor and this black marble with gold swirls (I'm guessing these our the teardrops), and very dim lighting, so if you got vision problems in the dark, this is not for you. If you are a vampire, recently had eye surgery, or are looking to make yourself seem more attractive with dark lighting and booze as your friend, then this is DEFINITELY for you. I had the Alaska cocktail, and my wife had the Jack in the Box. Both were good, but these are some old throwback cocktails that definitely lean more booze forward and less fruit, herb, or aromatics involved. They also had Budweiser on the menu and I think I saw Hamm's as well, along with a few other craft beer selections. Overall, they keep the drink selections minimal; which I'm okay with. My biggest issue is that the bar's atmosphere is confusing. You have these grandpa generation cocktails, in a dark lounge that could be from the 70's, with a bar that looks like it came from a 20's speakeasy, but with a neon "Weddings & Funerals" sign; and then the drink selections have blue collar mix-ins, with soul and 50's & 60's music in the background. The bartender was a little pretentious and made some snobby remark about how he doesn't drink wheated bourbons anymore when I asked his opinion on the Weller bourbon he had in the cabinet. There was also a hostess, I think, that didn't look like she was doing much besides standing behind the bar and talking with the bartenders. Don't bother. This place really disappointed me last night. Soo I was under the impression this was a cool spot to mingle & get some great cocktails.. but there was no one there on a Saturday night. Hours state they're open til 3 on Saturdays so I showed up @ 1:50, door was locked. Annoying. An employee throwing out the trash had to unlock it only to reveal a dark sad place with no people & a pissy bartender. While trying to read the cocktail menu the bartender apparently said something like he'll only serve us beer or something but not cocktails.. I unfortunately didn't hear him & ordered a cocktail bc ya know, it's a fricken cocktail bar. He had the worst piss poor attitude, sarcastically saying "I guess I'll just make the cocktails even though I just said no cocktails" slamming the shakers down & making it so uncomfortable for my friend & I who are 2 friendly women no less! Drinks were ok, the vibe was nice. The attitude was so unnecessary, was there on Friday and asked if there were hooks under the bar. The bartender got really pissy then I didn't get service for a solid 10 minutes which at first I thought it was because she was a bar back, but then I saw her serving people just walking in and realized she was just a bartender throwing a tantrum. There are a lot of spots in Chicago where I completely understand taking pride in the experience you're providing for people which can at times come off as pretentious. However, if the experience resonates as more than just grabbing drinks for the clientele which is important to people in this city, I can empathize with the ego and pride in the staff as a result of that success. I know I can go to a unique atmosphere that feels comfortable yet exclusive at the same time, that is the expectation the bar scene sets here. This is not one of those places. A pretentious attitude at a new spot just because it matches the Chicago bar scene "formula" of a low lit, curated speakeasy approach and is in an area that people base their entire identity on, does not mean automatic success. There is strategy behind places like Violet Hour, no industry or business out to make a profit is above having to carefully craft their brand and obligate their staff to drive that brand. This place is adorable....and very dark. The music is great and the space is small. If you want to get to know someone, it may be a bit loud, but if you move toward down to the end of the bar, it's cozy. The drink menu is small, which is great because each cocktail is made with a lot of care and knowledge. The bar tenders are super welcoming and straight forward. We had about four different cocktails here and all of them were delicious and pretty boozy. We ordered two crunchy tacos to soak up the booze (yeah right) and they hit the spot. How can you not love a good crunchy taco that is basically Taco Bell with a high class cocktail? Since this is under another restaurant (that's a separate review all together) it keeps the place from being super bogged down or crowded. I cant say it doesn't get crowded as the night goes on, but we left there around 9:30 and it still wasn't too bad. I'd for sure go back! read more
