I love the vibe of this cocktail bar, and it's right off the Logan square blue line. Great moody lighting with nice music but not too loud so you can have a good conversation. Came here to introduce my friend to Malort. I liked that they brought the whole bottle out for us. You can pour as much as you want before you take it away (if you happen to want seconds ). However you should note they decant it so it wasn't as bitter as a fresh bottle of Malort. They have a lot of amaro cocktails so expect some type of herbal flavors. Really nice presentation and the bartender came to our table to check on us every now and then. The amaro daiquiri was nice, a bit sweet and a bit citrusy. It has a unique herbal taste which pairs well with the Malort. Was able to just walk in with no wait during a weeknight around 8pm. read more

WHAT A FIND! Had no idea it existed. We were walking past to check out happy hour at a spot nearby and as soon as we saw Billy Sunday we knew we would have to stop in. It's such a cute spot, loved the vintage decor, the vibe was great, wonderful ambient lighting and man-- their bottle collection was fantastic! This place is the real deal with bartenders who actually know what they are doing and have the knowledge to back it up. Love my drink the Kent and the non alcoholic I had after that-- strawberry handshake. They actually put effort into their mocktails. My husband loves both of his-- the sekki Negroni & the Victorian. We shared the duck mousse which was fabulous, especially the crackers that came with and close it out with the puppy chow! It's a place to be seen not a place to be served, and not a place where they are happy to give you a detailed bill. We went in for some holiday drinks and got VERY SLOW service that turned into very sassy service when we wanted our check. First they wouldn't show us our bill itself then when I asked to see the bill they showed me an iPad screen that had our drinks plus tax plus a service charge. when I asked what the service charge was the waiter laughed at me - I was shocked. When I asked why he was laughing he said no one had ever asked before. Then I asked what the fee was for, he laughed some more, then couldn't really explain it. Then we watched him serve other tables a lot faster than he served us. Overall it was not a great experience. If you need to drink somewhere where the drinks are ok and the money isn't really yours but theirs but it's just hanging out in your wallet - go here. This place is a gem. Had some time to kill before a dinner reservation near by and had the good fortune of stopping in. It was quiet and lovely design/ ambiance. Ordered a scribbled note and that might just be the best cocktail I've ever had. High praise as I travel extensively and love a well balanced cocktail. Chatted with Carly and Kirsten and they had excellent recommendations for our time in the city. Had to pop by one last time before leaving town a few days later to thank them and soak up the vibe. Hands down one of my favorite places in chicago for a well crafted cocktail!! The ambiance is very chill and it felt like there were quite a few regulars. One of the bartenders loves working there so much, he came in to work on his day off. The cocktails were so well done. Nothing super fancy or overly complicated. Just great ingredients and some great combinations of flavors. My favorite was the Permanently Closed which is on their regular menu. It is safe to say that is one of the BEST cocktails I have ever had! When I told one of the bartenders I wanted another mezcal or tequila based drink for my next cocktail and the flavor profile I was in the mood for, he delivered! The drink he made (Hipsters Ashtray) was created by another bartender there. It's not on their regular menu but it's another must try drink. I love this place! It's the first cocktail bar I've tried in Logan but it's got a very romantic vibe to it. Dim lighting, booth seats and bar seats where the bartenders can make literally anything and do it in a cool way. Our bartender / server was Mason and he was great! We were out celebrating so we had a bit of fun and they treated us well and brought us over a bit extra water when needed! The harvest moon is the definition of fall and smells so good. Tastes like a cinnamon appley goodness. The cocktails are all quality made and definitely different so a fun experience. Even though I don't love certain liquors, here they all taste good! My favorite was the Kent and I had the bartenders make me a dealers choice (not really) but something with gin, a little fruity but not to sweet and it was great! I don't really have any photos due to the darkness and not wanting to use flash and disrupt but the photo I posted was of a gin and tea drink and it came out like an adult Capri sun. My friend and I were bar hopping in Logan square and stumbled into this place. It was towards the end of our evening and unknowingly, it was our last bar. I ordered Permanently Closed while my friend ordered Sunday Candy. While I enjoyed Sunday Candy a little more, Permanently Closed was the drink that closed my mood for the evening. Both drinks were pure alcohol and couldn't be finished. I guess this goes with what was in the ingredients in the cocktails. I would like to think some of the other cocktails tasted better. Four of us came in on a Friday night at 9PM. We were greeted by the host/manager. He seated us within 5 minutes which was awesome! The drink menu had a lot of appealing options. I generally like my cocktails on the sweeter side so I asked for a recommendation. I had the "It's about thyme," when it came out the thyme was on fire but slowly went out. This drink was perfect for me, it was sweet but refreshing! To eat we tried the cheesy monkey bread. It was pretty good. The sauce on the side is what made it unique. Everyone was super friendly here. The manager checked in on us and our waiter was very helpful. Overall it is a smaller, cozier bar. It's kind of dark and intimate. My only complaint is the prices are very high. The cocktails are anywhere from $13-$20. And the cheesey monkey bread was $12. They do have bar snacks such as popcorn and puppy chow which is about $4, so that's not too bad if you just want a snack. Overall good atmosphere, great service, and high quality food and drinks. This place is so unassuming, located right in the heart of Logan Square. But they are serving up some fabulous cocktails. They highlight their quality of liquors, with a selection that is rare, exclusive, and not the usual given at any common bar. I can't say I'm well versed in all these types of alcohol, so I can't speak on that BUT their drinks were strong so I believe them. I had a tequila and a mezcal drink, and both were very liquor focused with little frills in their concoction. The ambiance is intimate, with dark and moody lighting. The decor takes me back in time quite a bit, but the music was from the 90s (good selection of r&b tunes). Our server was friendly as can be and knowledgeable about the menu. My favorite Chicago experience by far. I took a 36 hour trip to Chicago over a random weekend recently because I'm vaxxed and was itching to go out especially with dirt cheap tickets from Baltimore. Brad Thomas Parsons mentions their amaro library in his book Amaro. It's been on my hit list for quite some time and I saved it for the end of my trip and I could not have had a better experience. It is obvious the guys bartending here are passionate about amaro which is a defining part of the experience. I was lucky enough to sit next to a former bartender of theirs too to engage in this conversation with as I perused the amaro book. I love it when bartenders not only know their shit but are personable and passionate. I was able to compare 21st century amaro to an amaro made in the 1960s; prewar amari so rare and niche that'll I'll never ever consume again. And to share that experience with people who appreciate amaro as much if not more than I do is an absolute pleasure. The cocktails here are excellent and well balanced, but man, I'm not sure if there's any other place like this in all or the US or the whole world. Apparently the original person who started the amaro library is off doing weird prepper stuff in the boonies which is absolutely an apt thing for an amaro enthusiast to do and telltale of how precious and rare an experience like this is. read more

Finally got a chance to try it after walking by so many times. Only went for a quick drink especially since their sign mentions "Rare Spirits" and that enthralled me. Welcomed into a cozy and narrow establishment that was dimly lit for the evening and giving vibes that would be welcoming to any traveller looking for a libation to help take a load off. My group and I were sat at a table and we scanned the menu from the table. The focus here is the various spirits and their specially concocted cocktails. I was eager to go through a list of their rare or hard to get whiskeys but unfortunately there isn't one available. So I looked at their cocktails instead to find something that would calm my thirst, but a whisper of "rare spirits" constantly fluttered in my ear and the desire to savor their unique characteristics that make them so sought after and rare, without any other additives. So I inquired with the waiter if they had a list of their rare spirits in an attempt at a Hail Mary. He reassured that unfortunately there is no list but if they have pretty much anything I can name of. So I gave it a shot and name a couple that came to mind like some Willet, Weller, Pappy Van Winkle, but was informed that they didn't have any of those. My mind snapped back to just ordering from the cocktail list and keeping things simple. The waiter later came back and informed me that they had some Weller special reserve. I already have a bottle of it at home and was hoping to try the other Weller, but settled for it since it is something I know I'd enjoy and I didn't feel like bothering the waiter any more. They only serve a couple of snacks. So if you're looking for dinner and libations you might want to come here first or after for a night cap. Sorry I forgot to ask if there is a dog friendly patio Atmosphere: Warm, intimate Food/drink: all about them cocktails, or know what rare spirits you're searching for Service: helpful, attentive, quick Room for improvement: maybe a list of some of the spirits. I was wanting something fruity and light with vodka; there was no drink on the menu like that, but the bartender did a perfect job of creating something I loved. The Papa Don't Peach was also really good! Lastly, get the Puppy Chow to snack on - it tastes homemade just like how my mom makes it. Yum! The service was really good! The sad news for me is that it is not within walking distance to my friend's place (whereas Scofflaw is). However when I move to Logan Square this Spring, I may look for a spot specifically in this area so I can easily come and go from Billy Sunday. ;) I begged my friend to pop in here one night after dinner and he obliged my request although not all that willingly. I must say though that he was made into a believer the second he tried his drink. He had the Box Lunch which I tried and loved! It's served in a little milk jug with a straw. I would say it was rather nostalgic, but truth be told I still make chocolate milk for myself at home and drink it with a bendy straw. I had the Hoar's Frost cocktail which had London Dry Gin, Lemon, London Dock Rum, Grenadine (which I'm a sucker for) and Orange Curacao. This libation blended perfectly and felt great going down. All the cocktails run $10. Billy Sunday is a place where you'll want to try everything on the menu but it will be hard as you'll also want to order another of whatever you're having. Aside from all their fancy ingrediented signature cocktails, they have beers. The cool thing is they have Schlitz if you're in the mood for something cheap and they have a few more craft beers like Krankshaft & Golden Monkey. Important to note, they had the cutest toilet paper holder I've ever seen. As usual, I was so focused on the drinks I didn't get a chance to try the food. And the food looks and sounds fabulous. this place used to be one of my favorites in the logan neighborhood for ages. it had been a couple years since we went in but had two back to back annoying experiences that had me thinking it's prob time for me to move on. one time they wouldn't make my father-in-law like a super standard drink (it was like a manhattan or old fashioned or martini i can't remember which) but they were basically like "our weird spin on it or the highway" type stuff idk it's cool in your 20s when you're being a snob but you hit a point where you're like yo enough just give me the option to have it normal. then went in recently celebrating a friends accomplishment and they were super rude, place was nearly empty and they were still completely up our ass about having an exact explicit number of ppl coming that could not change once we sat down, we tried to say there might be 1-2 people who were tentative who hoped to come celebrate with her last minute but they for some reason didn't want to be remotely flexible and were really giving us an excessive amount of lip over the possibility that god forbid one guy joined us later after our group sat down, it was really not a big deal. i can take some attitude and used to work in the industry but this was really unwarranted and the type of stink that makes u just be like uh nah, somewhere else. also if they delivered the goods it'd make up for it but multiple ppl didn't like their drinks and some of the food was objectively gross mush. i honestly feel bad even writing a negative review of an institution, someone's effort and like a place we used to love but i feel more bad that going here the last time was my suggestion and the person we were celebrating ended up having kind of a (temporarily) shitty time as a result of my suggestion. plenty of bars nearby that are welcoming and killing it. i won't be back but wish everyone in there the best lol idk man, cheers. read more

How cool is Billy Sunday? When I arrived one early Thursday evening, the first song I heard was Transmission by Joy Division. The song I heard upon my departure was Iggy and the Stooges' Gimme Danger. What else do you need to know? And yet. And yet. I know my noble bourbon boozers, and you crave details, whiskey soaked and pork distilled details, and my brothers, I have them, I tell you, I do. What you must learn, my brothers, is your new rallying cry, and it is Rabarbaro! Rabarbaro! Rabarbaro! I recommend bellowing it in your finest pub voice while flinging your fedora skyward, for it is a delicious Amaro with which Billy imbues his Old Fashioned. It takes a cocktail with a dirty reputation as a citrus soaked nightmare and resurrects it with an uncommon depth and complexity. Indeed my noble boozers I tell you this truly, Mr. Sunday has crafted the finest Old Fashioned I've drowned ever - a concoction worthy of worship and excessive praise. I dream of it as a cure-all for the pressures of our modern day life. The cocktail glories do not end there, to the contrary they only begin. The Negroni is a delicious example of why we should adhere to the classics. Similarly, BIlly mixes a glorious rye Manhattan, with flavors spicy and rich from Carpano Antica, quite possibly one of the best in the city. Finally, his eponymous Cocktail builds on the Manhattan but adds a certain element of Basque unpredictability of which even Papa Bear from his Oak Park enclave would approve. All will provide you with pleasure and a heady rush of the glory of our modern age. After a few short hours at Billy Sunday, you could be boozed up and girded for extensive damage of a literary and literal variety, so it is best to fill up on food supplies while you consume libations. Fortunately, Billy has a small but appropriate selection for you. Start with the pig's ears - essentially protein rich potato chips, they (perhaps surprisingly so) match perfectly with your manhattan and other whisky cocktails. If you require more substantial sustenance, the rabbit plate is massive and three legged - put aside questions of Dr. Caligari and simply dive in - I merely witnessed the phenomenon from a neighboring table but it looked divine. If you have further questions, the bartenders and servers are knowledgeable, and, given the establishment's moniker, more than happy to spread the gospel of food and cocktails. This place is ideal for a creative drink and a light meal. After a drink at Lost Lake, we hopped over to this quintessential Logan Square spot around 10:30 pm and were seated immediately. It's pretty dark and has a good atmosphere, but wasn't too loud. Just a nice vibe. The bold-fonted menu is easy to see in the dark (or after a few rounds) and has a nice mix of gussied up comfort food: baked oysters, artichoke dip, fried chicken, puppy chow. Drinks are a little more challenging, with ingredients like pickled ramp and fernet ice cream, though you won't have to do too much googling. They also have large format and draft cocktail options. I wish I lived here and could work through their whole menu, honestly. We had steak tartare, which though a light portion was absolutely delicious and judiciously seasoned. The pimento cheese similarly hit the spot. Both came with a ridiculous amount of bread, so you definitely won't leave hungry. My friend had a spin on a classic cocktail, might have been an Airmail, that was good, but I didn't really remember because it was overshadowed by BOX LUNCH. It's in all-caps on the menu (as is the rest) and deserves to keep the all-caps because it's that good. BOX LUNCH combines tangy and creamy goat milk, bitter chamomile-esque genepi, palo cortado sherry, and oatmeal spices. If you think that sounds nasty, maybe you don't deserve the improbable magic of BOX LUNCH. It requires a leap of faith but rewards it easily. No other words. Service was excellent and attentive. The space is quite cozy. This is such a pro date move. I don't remember prices at all but think it was reasonable. Five stars alone for BOX LUNCH but Billy Sunday earns its keep easily. read more

It's quite expensive, but I absolutely loved it! Service was wonderful. The brunette female who served us was super friendly and had great attention to detail. Atmosphere is a 10/10. It's everything I want in a bar: a mostly gray & white color scheme, antique plates, unique glassware, and lighting that makes anyone look great. I loved my smoked whiskey cocktail with egg white called "Papa Don't Preach". It was totally gimmicky, but I found that to be a nice surprise. Hubby really enjoyed his standard old fashioned which was served with a perfectly clear ice cube. Again, attention to detail. This place has got it! We only had the tartare for food and we both thought it was very tasty despite the teeny portion. It perfectly covered the amount of bread served with it so that was just fine. The bread's crust was a little off-putting/dry/rustic for my taste, but I liked the shape of it since that made for an easier and more attractive bite. Just personal preference there though I'm sure. Went here with 5 friends last night in pursuit of the group cocktail PSL which was a bourbon pumpkin cocktail served in a hollowed out pumpkin. OMG it was amazing. All the fall fun I wanted. The pumpkin was frozen so the cocktail was cold but it showed up with the stem on fire. A great (and expensive) drink to share. We also enjoyed The cocktails: Papa Don't Peach, which came in a big wooden nesting doll, it has this woody aftertaste that was really good. The Keep of the Grass, which came in a little bucket of grass, it was good too. My friend had the negroni, which was a strong drink for one... but she didn't notice it was $30. That's a bit much for one cocktail so make sure you read the prices. The root beer float with fernet ice cream was really good, even though I don't like fervent that much, it worked in this drink. We tried the food too. Steak tartar was good. Baked Oysters were very rich, I could only eat one. The curried bits weren't spicy at all but they were tasty. The monkey bread wasn't cheesy but was a good piece of bread to help digest all those cocktails. read more
