I needed to replace the sewer lateral on my hundred-year-old house. I had four companies come inspect. Two of the companies went on at length about how dangerous the replacement would be for my magnificent cedar tree, since the line runs directly under it. Bill--who's been doing this for 50 years--assured me that there would be NO problem with the tree. As he explained it, first of all, he's never lost a tree on a job, and second, some species of trees may have a long large tap root (e.g., pine), but cedar trees do not, and in any case using the trenchless pipe-burst method wouldn't disturb the tree at all. Whew. He gave me a very competitive bid, and his terrific crew got the job done between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Peter came back the next day to replace the concrete that they dug up along the walkway on the side of the house when finding the opening they needed to insert the new pipe. I'm thrilled. No fuss, absolutely reliable--Sue in the office was terrific--no danger at all to my beloved tree, very reasonable price, direct, courteous, and friendly folks . . . His crew is great, but Bill is not a nice man and took complete advantage of me when I was going through some very severe financial situations with the sale of my property, and yhen when I closed escrow he put a riduculous extra charge way over 1 thousand on to the close of escrow and to be paid to him. Homeowners Beware!!! These people are SHADY!!! If it ain't broken, don't fix it......Bill's Underground don't follow this rule, but for my experience, I signed a contract (4/9/18), paid a deposit, and they reneged on the amount ($6250) a week later (4/13) and said it would be more expensive and they couldn't do the work. So, it could have ended there where I would have given them a 3-star. Instead I did-it-myself, used a Drain Clearing Bladder attachment to my hose and unclogged my 60-year old sewer lateral, but that didn't stop the Bill's Underground 3-Generation Scam. 3 weeks after Bill himself cancelled the contract and said they would return my deposit ($400), they cash the check anyway (4/27) and told me that they needed to "reexamine" my sewerline, in which Bill's son and grandson came out to my house (5/7) to place a foreign object into the lateral with a Street Curb Water Meter Key to cause potential damage to the line. No Joke!!! Then Bill called me up the next day (5/8) and said he would not charge me (yeah right sure) to dig up the street to see how they can fix my sewer lateral "that is no longer clogged" and the contract was cancelled a month prior. Huh? What a SCAM!!! I called Bill back to stop him from continuing to do any other work (he hung up with disgust - because he got questioned and caught in the act), where FYI, I had to call the Sherriff's Office and file a complaint for them trespassing, reexamining my sewer lateral with criminal intent to damage the sewer lateral. Don't waste your time with these crooks; they are nice for a price. They'll tear up your driveway and charge you what they like. Fools only hire these Fools, that fix things that ain't broken. Toilet back up, raw sewage, bathroom time out - these are the nightmares of owing a home. We have the exact experience on a home in West County. We called one of those major rescue companies (xxx rxxx, , patrol xxx etc.) to come in for a quick fix. They also pitched for a major sewer repair due to an off-set found on the main line. Depending upon how dire the situation is, you may consider these actions: 1. Talk to the sewage department of the city and explain your problem. Ask for recommendations since they do maintain city sewage. 2. Get at least a few estimates, probably five or more. Some would offer a free video scan and some would not. This is where it gets tricky, you may get a low quote but you do not know if they will do a good job. If you have acquaintance that could back up their proven reliability, you may want to give them serious consideration. Don't be afraid to negotiate. The price range from all the estimates could vary by as much as 100%. We picked Bill's Underground since it is one of the three given by the city. The owner Bill mentioned that they do not cover the Lamorinda area or I would have other jobs for him. Bill was professional, courteous and followed through with the dates promised. He did a 60 ft trenchless line replacement and we are happy with the price and the job so far. He also handled all paperwork required by the district. Bill's Underground was a Godsend. I had raw sewage coming out of my clean-out in the front yard and I was desperate from all the constant plumbing back-ups. They quoted me $4600 for replacing my Sewer Lateral after a camera inspection and stuck to that quote even after it was discovered that the main was 21 foot down and took them 3 days instead of 1 day (as is typical). The crew were hard-working and mindful of the constant traffic on my street. They cleaned up each day and the repair work on the street and the concrete on my porch was well done. I never hired these people , my neighbor did for a sewer lateral replacement..they started 8:00 am Monday 8:15 they dug into a water main, completely flooded the whole street for an hour before EBMUD came to repair it.they blamed whoever marked the location of it..we had no water for hours..EBMUD used heavy equipment until 10:00 pm. My sick wife was beside herself,my granddaughter woke up continuously...what a nightmare..Tuesday at 8:00 they came out and started the job they botched the day before..at 9:30 Darryl the boss was yelling at his workers cussing them out and telling them their fired! Used all the cuss words screaming at them..I came out and told them to stop cussing and yelling..my family andI don't want to hear that. Darryl drove off and the workers apologized..wasn't their fault..what a jerk! we suffered 2 complete days of heavy equipment noise and no water ..plus the offensive language and abuse of the boss..we never hired them, if I were you I wouldn't even call them extremely unprofessional and crude people...don't waste your money!! read more

The workers were prompt and thorough. Argo came by a few days before the job and explained what the job entailed and returned at the end of the job to check in with me. The price was very reasonable. If you truly dislike your neighbors, this is the group to hire. While doing work next door, the workers parked their truck well off the street, across the sidewalk and well into our landscaping. The was room to park on their clients property but they parked on our landscaping even after being requested the day before not to. For some reason the landscaping fabric does not hold up well to an oversized truck parked on it. The plant that was next to their tool box apparently was invisible to them. One of the workers was smoking with the coals of the cigarette being thrown onto the pine needles. Luckily only smoldering happened, not a full fire to the whole stand of pine trees. When the damage was pointed out to the "boss", all we got was a rude grunt and sarcasm from a worker. No response from the company when we called. They did finally move the truck (to their clients property) after they realized I was moving the security cameras to record the damage continuing to be done. The total lack of situation awareness and consideration of others makes me question this company. This attitude and the cold patch they used on the street, makes me question the quality of the work. Sheriff could only write them a ticket for blocking the sidewalk and I could not tow the vehicle off my property without giving the owner 72 hours notice! But most of all, I will never forget the feeling of helplessness at watching the destruction of our property and nothing we could say or do would make these people care. read more

Bill's Underground installed a new sewer lateral for my house. They did fine work. My only comment is that they did not tell me beforehand that they would take a few days before they repaired the exposed aggregate concrete deck and the asphalt in the street. It makes sense though, they wait until they have a few concrete repairs and/or asphalt fixes and do them all in one pass. They were also quick on processing/forwarding some Sanitary District paperwork that I needed. read more

Made the mistake of calling Rescue Rooter to clear a sewer back-up during the holidays. They charged $386. to clear the line and said that the sewer had a major crack and needed to be replaced for $9500. I know enough about sewers to know that seemed high. I called Bill's Underground who said they would replace the line for $4200. When I asked them to camera the line to be sure it was needed, they did so and said there was really nothing wrong and replacement wasn't even necessary. Totally honest and professional. We had an issue with Sewer Connection before where they gave us a bogus expensive repair job. We sent Bill's Underground (Earl did our inspection and I believe is now the owner of the company). He informed us that the sewer was fine and no repairs needed! We've used him since, and he gives us straight-forward information that we can rely on! Beware of major repair bills from other companies and you should always get 2nd-3rd estimates when you do. read more
