They came out to quote a new roof for me. I approved the quote on Sept 11th. Asked them for a date they would start. They asked if I was selling my house. I said no, I just need a new roof. Toasted me for a week. I followed up 3 times. Finally received a response on the 18th saying. We can schedule you in November if it's not raining. I understand roofers get busy but be upfront when you come to quote. If I was selling my house would you fit me in faster. Now I am scrambling to find a new roofer. read more

They had done some patchwork for us a few years earlier and I really liked how they operated, so when it was time to do the entire roof, we were eager to work with them. Nicholas has been our go to roofer for a few years now. We started with them fixing a significant leak that stumped four other contractors and just had them replace our whole roof. The bid was quick and simple and their price was reasonable. We asked for extra venting for a whole house fan and they were happy to help out. Their crew tore the roof off on Friday and was done removing the old roof before noon. Their install crew started Monday afternoon and was done by Tuesday at the end of the day. They asked questions as needed and the roof looks amazing! They also installed gutter guards on the gutters under our neighbor's oak tree and cleaned out the gutters before they left. We have used Nicholas Roofing, a family business, for a long time - 25 to 30 years. I thought I wrote a review before, but just realized I hadn't. They have done a number of jobs for us over the years. Here are the ones I remember: 1. reroofing a former house, 2. replacing the roof on a small standalone garage, 3. doing the roofing work on a remodeling project (converting a garage into a family room), 4. replacing about half the gutters and downspouts on our current home 5. most recently, hunting down a small leak over the family room. It took a few trips and rainy seasons to find it, but they persisted and it didn't leak thru the heavy rains in December and January. They stand by their work and didn't charge us for following ups. My sense is their rates are fair. Everyone who's worked on site have been professional and courteous. Highest recommendation. read more

The folks at Nicholas Roofing are THE BEST in the business. They answer emails and calls promptly & they'll likely shock you with how quickly they can provide you with a fair estimate. Last year, the owner (Nick) came out to our home personally & assured me that our roof had lots of life left. His team made some small repairs to our roof that eliminated a few minor leaks we had at the time. Nick's father taught him well! It speaks volumes when the owner of a business comes out personally to give you an estimate. It means even more when that person is honest with you about what you do and don't need. After a recent deluge of water falling from the sky about a week ago, we had a new leak in and around our too-tall (old school wall heater) pipe. I emailed the company & Scott in the office sent a lovely gentleman (Nai) to our house THE VERY NEXT DAY. Nai patched up the leak (just in time for a crazy storm) & suggested that we have the heater pipe cut & a proper cap installed over it. He assured me that we'd be done with leaks for good after cutting and capping the pipe. As his visit was in between the most intense (Level 5!) storm we'd had in years, I decided to take his advice. I contacted the office via email. Again, Scott replied quickly & advised that someone would be back out in between storms to take care of the pipe. We had our residence in Berkeley reroofed for the second time in 25 years by Nicholas and are very satisfied. Even with the constraints of Covid and wildfire smoke, workers showed up on time, did the work well, safely, and all at a more than competitive price. We had some additional wood repair that was done on a time and materials basis at a fair price. This roofing installation was done in two phases in coordination with a solar company. The timing and coordination were fine and required very little intervention from us. Both Nicholas management and workers communicated well and responded to questions and concerns. This is a long overdue review for a repair job last year during the first surge of COVID-19. I was very happy with Nicholas roofing's service. It was really an easy and smooth process. I've had a great experience working with Nicholas Roofing for a number of small roofing projects/issues. They've been quick and willing to send someone out for small jobs (adding a plumbing penetration and fixing a small skylight leak) for a fair and reasonable price. After both of these jobs they always followed up by email to see how things went, and have since even helped me troubleshoot a separate leak via e-mail. It is so hard to find reliable contractors these days and even more so for small jobs. I reached out due to a leak in our roof that was coming into the house via one of our overhead lights. They were booked up for several months, but someone gave me a call to discuss our issue. I described the leak and our roof, and he gave me a few suggestions for what might be happening and some suggestions on how we could just do a quick fix. I followed his suggestions, and fingers crossed, but it looks like it was just a small crack that needed patching and it hasn't leaked anymore this season. Review #125 - 2016 We were looking into getting our roof replaced about 2 years ago when the roof had a small leak. We called a guy from another company to get the leak repaired and he charged us $500 for about 5 minutes of his time. Then last year the leak got even bigger so I'm not sure if he actually repaired it or not. So, we decided to look for another company who we could trust to replace the whole roof and that's how we ended up with Nicholas Roofing. They were highly recommended by the guys who redid our foundation, because the previous owner of our home, trusted some cheap labor company that went out of business to originally fix the foundation. When we originally asked how soon they could get the roof replaced, they told us that they were booked for the entire summer since El Niño has brought extra rain this year. We were on schedule to get our roof replaced by August, so I had to keep praying that our roof doesn't leak again with all the extra rain. Luckily, someone called to reschedule their repair and we got our roof replaced before Memorial Day weekend. The whole process took about 4 days. They started the job on Monday afternoon and completed everything by Thursday and the city came to inspect it on Friday. We are happy with the work and I am very happy that I don't have to worry about another leak for 30 years. Peace of mind is definitely worth every dollar spent! read more

His said he emailed yesterday and that I didn't respond; however, the email was merely a reminder and did not state I needed to respond. This company is flacky and unreliable! read more

Rock stars. easy to deal with. do exactly what they say they're going to do. After an unsucessful attempt to get Acker & Gurerro to show up or return phone calls (see review) i called Nicholas. They were great on the phone, followed up the appointment with email reminders, and were prompt and thorough. We grabbed a hose and sprayed it on the roof to determine the exact location of the leak, pretty much exactly where i thought it was. They said no problem to patch that, you don't need to re-roof, it's in good condition. One of their guys came in two days and patched it for $100. $100 Acker & Guerrero thought nothing of hard selling me into replacing my entire roof at, like 70 or 80 times that. wow. Wow, I have a apartment building in Oakland that started leaking from the last big storm. I called 3 different roofers from Yelp. I had Jim the owner of Nicolas Roofing come out to give me an estimate to replace it. He came over and inspected the roof and called me back. Explained that the roof was done very well about 10 to 15 years ago and was still in good condition. I told him the roof was leaking in a couple of places. He said that repairing the roof would be a good option and cheaper and should last another 5 years. The other roofers just gave me an estimate and that's it. Didn't bother to give me the option to repair -vs- replacing the roof. I really appreciate the honesty and information Jim provided and not just looking for the next job! read more

Owner came out and looked at roof of my house and my studio for some simple maintenance. He took pictures of what was needed. Charged me the minimum amount ($250) for what turned out to be the work of one man for about an hour-and-a half. I have done the same thing myself for 10 years, and a little more thoroughly from what I observed; however I am getting old and figured it would be a good idea to fall off my roof. :) I called the office while the worker was here, and asked if he was doing all he was suppose to. I was assured that he was experienced and good at what he did. Why the four star review? Primarily, because a different roofer was going to charge me considerably more, and he merely looked at my studio roof from my house roof. He said everything was OK. The Nicholas owner actually went up to the studio roof, and took a picture of what needed adhesive. Roofs are something that most home owners know little about and the work is out of sight. One has to trust the roofing company. Based on my experience, Nicholas Roofing was more careful about inspection and did not try to overcharge me. Business do have many hidden expenses, so I think the bid was fair. I will definitely ask them for a bid for work I need in the future. read more

I had a small leak (in a bad place - over my bed) since a year ago fall. A couple of people looked at it but what they tried didn't work and the leak got bigger. In September, they diagnosed the problem (as cupped shingles) in 10 minutes and the worker spent 20 minutes fixing it. Now that the rains came I was able to test the fix, and lo and behold, dry as a bone. read more

My house was re-roofed by Nicholas last year, just before the big storms. I found Jimmy to be very pleasant when he came to provide the estimate. Nicholas also got some good feedback on bpn and from my GC too. Very pleased that I got the old leaky roof replaced and that their work has held up so far. I wish I could leave a stellar review for them. However, bad office communications and gaps in scheduling prevent me from doing so. There was one part of the job which was particularly troublesome for the workers to address. It was hard to get in touch with somebody there to figure out what could be done about it, and when. After they had taken the gutters off, it was left untouched and open for weeks- leaving me in a slight panic as the rainy season began. There was also a question about the bill which went unanswered, and they would not continue the job until it was paid. Normally I don't like to pay for unexpected charges without an explanation first, but in this case I had to or else risk the job being left unfinished. That sums up my experience with Nicholas. I don't doubt they do good work and stand by it, but client dealings could be better IMO... read more

No one returned my call. I called again and this time someone picked up. I requested an estimate for my roof and the response was I won't be able to send someone out till the end of May. I was deliberating on making an appointment and I mentioned it to the person on the phone, his response was we probably won't be able to get to your roof till the end of summer. What??? Nicholas Roofing recently put a new roof on my detached garage. Jimmy (the owner) showed up exactly on time to get the info for an estimate. In addition, he also inspected my house roof, which is newer than the garage, and pointed out some minor maintenance that I could perform. I also got a bid from another reputable company. The prices were close but Nicholas was a bit less expensive. More important, they proposed to replace the existing tar and gravel with modified bitumen; the other roofer proposed a new tar and gravel roof, a proven but messy approach. The crew arrived on schedule to perform the tear-off, which took a couple of hours in the afternoon, and cleaned up the worksite before leaving. The two key guys returned the next day and installed the new roof. They were obviously immigrants but their English was very good and they were fluent in roofing terminology. They were very courteous, competent and did a good clean-up when they were done. Here is the best part. Many contractors want some payment before starting a job, others are standing at the door demanding final payment the instant the job is done. Nicholas sent me a bill a week after completing the job. I found this practice, along with their punctuality, to be refreshingly professional. They certainly have the inside track on doing my house roof when the time comes. read more

My experience of Nicholas roofing is that they missed 2 different appointments to inspect our roof. The first time we let it go and chalked it up to a busy contractor. The second time--after taking time off of work to wait for them to arrive--I called only to be informed that they had no idea who we were or that we had an appointment, (not to mention the first missed appointment). Unprofessional? Very. Incompetent? At least when it comes to operating a calender and pencil. They did come recommended to us, but we certainly won't be passing their name along to anyone we know or like. read more

NIcholas Roofing in Berkeley are really good on all key criteria. Their pricing is very, very reasonable as it should be if you want repeat business and referrals. The quality of the work top; in our case it was multiple rain leak areas in our top of the hill Berkeley house. Their work involved replacing metal shingle components and outside stucco work. The real test then took place the last three weeks from the rain storms. After years of trying many options, Nicolas roofing solved the problem. Jimmy is great; comes to the house reviews the problem and presents the solutions. And he does not try to "over-sell". Scott is excellent working at their office.
