My roof had had several leaks over the years due to an incompetent handyman, and solar panels that created water intrusion. Plus, it was about 20 years old. I got bids from a number of roofers but Clay won me over by explaining why one side of my roof was especially vulnerable to leaks due to its pitch and the winds, and that it needed to be rebuilt. His bid was a little higher, but he gave me a great deal of education. I had more trust in him, and liked going with a smaller company. The interaction felt genuine, not salesy. His crew was very fast and efficient and the roof looks great, plus I have confidence that if I have problems down the line, he will make them right. I was out of town when he did the work, but my housemate said it was a great crew and that she actually missed having them around! Clay Saunders the owner listened carefully and proposed a solution that solved many problems while also being affordable. While he's a residential roofing genius, he helped me with my small flat-roofed commercial building that has solar panels on the roof. Clay's solution was to leave the panels in place and use a silicone coating called Enduris 3525. He solved ponding issues by filling low areas prior to using the coating. I give Clay Saunders and Beethoven's an unsolicited five star rating. He's the most ethical roofer I've ever worked with, and his roofs are very high quality. He put a new roof on my disabled friend's house. It hadn't had anything done to it since it was built in the 1950s, and the original roof had a base of only 1/4" plywood. It was desperately in need of repair, with a blocked Dutch gutter system and rotted plywood and supports in many areas. It was beginning to spring leaks into the house. We are trying to save her money so she can afford to keep paying her caregivers and stay in her home, so after Clay gave us a quote for the roof, I asked if there was any way to cut the costs and still have the roof hold up for another ten years. He spent time preparing another estimate for a good repair job, but both her family and I ended up asking him to replace the roof after all. His effort in producing an extensive second proposal, when he could have just told us it would not be worth it was much appreciated. I really appreciated him giving me a whole lot of information about Linda's roof and different ways to fix its problems. The man knows whereof he speaks! I was not very surprised to later find out from a biographical blurb on Yelp that he studied mechanical engineering. The roof is now very beautiful. You can tell it's solid and sound, and that careful attention was paid to details. The people he works with are fine craftsmen, too. I will always go to Clay for my roofing needs in the future. I wish I had heard of his roofing company before I had my own roof replaced several years ago. I know that terrible experience would never have happened if I'd chosen Clay's company instead. We have a 1919 stucco Mediterrenean house that has a partial flat roof. It leaked and needed to be replaced. Beethoven came in with the most thorough knowledge and techniques that seemed to do it right and would last, educating us along the way. They did three different roof types, new gutters, downspouts, stucco repair, terracota replacement, and painting. All done beautifully. Did it on time, on budget, and were super clean. Clay and his crew did a FANTASTIC job on our roof. They showed up when they said they would, kept and incredibly clean work site and did it faster than they originally estimated. We had them remove the old wooden shake shingles from the original roof and install new plywood decking as well. They even repaired our tongue and groove ceiling/deck that was water damaged. Clay came out on a very rainy day in less than an hour from my call on a Saturday, climbed up on my roof, took pictures, and gave me a quote for a new roof. However, he also told me that he previously did roof restoration, which involves less expensive repairs. He no longer does that because new roofs are more profitable. He spent half an hour giving me the names of products and suppliers I could hire a handyman to use, which would cost about 1/5 of his quote for a new roof. He said it should give me another 15 - 20 years of life on my roof. I took copious notes, but he also said my handyman could call him for more details and instructions. He did this even though he knew he wouldn't make any money on this information or work. What a generous, nice guy! read more

Clay is the best, I would never hire another roofer. He replaced the roof on our house in 2019. I had been looking for a reliable roofer for years, and he was the first one who understood the complexities of a steep roof with stucco flashing. They removed the stucco around the flashing, and mounted it underneath instead of just mounting it over the stucco and patching it up with sealant, which would have cracked and started leaking. They repaired and repainted dry-rot in some of the eves, and the new stucco, matching existing paint. All for a very reasonable price. I hired him again in 2023 to replace our garage and workshop roof, and they planned the job and replaced both roofs in one day! I was truly amazed. They installed all new flashing on the flat roof, and riveted it together for a clean look. They also installed a new gutter on the downhill side to reduce water damage and improve runoff the slightly sloped roof. The garage roof now has shingles that match the main house exactly, and looks great, with all new gutters. Other roofers pale in comparison - some of them just looked at the google photos of our house and said it was too steep to work on. What kind of roofer can't work on steep roofs in the Berkeley hills? Clay and his crew are a true pleasure to work with, and have my highest recommendation. read more

I called Clay and asked if he would come out to help me diagnose the source of a leak that was causing water damage to my soffits. On the phone he immediately said I needed a new roof, which was the first bad sign, as he hadn't seen the damage at all and had no idea what my roof looked like. He missed our first appointment, which I came home from work for. We rescheduled. I was 10 minutes late, and I see him already on my roof! He had used his ladder to climb up to my balcony, and then used his ladder again to get up to my roof, all while I wasn't there just because I was a few minutes late! My wife was very alarmed to see a stranger on our roof without me being home. I scolded him for this, but nonetheless listened to his findings. He again said I needed a new roof, even though I had another roofer out a couple days before who said my roof looked fine and that the source of the leak was likely due to gutter overflow up the drip line or through the nail heads. This guy was a total waste of time, seems to value no one's time but his own, and doesn't seem to think or diagnose problems. He just wants to put a new roof on your house, finding any small defects as a justification. Even if I did need a new roof, I wouldn't hire him due to his grave disrespect of other people's property. I've had a leak for a few years with water coming in through the in-wall mail slot. I have never been able to fix it and I thought it was a roofing issue. I spoke with Clay yesterday and we made an appointment for this morning. Clay showed up on time and immediately diagnosed what was causing the leak. Turns out it is not a roofing issue. Clay explained in detail what the fix would be but said his company doesn't do that kind of construction work. Great, honest contractor. First the good things. My roof was leaking and Clay answered my call on a Sunday and they were out the next day to tarp it. This saved my ceiling from damage, which is much appreciated! The roof they subsequently installed looks great! However... Since I needed the tarp asap, I was locked into their full contract and didn't get other bids. Considering what I now know to be their relatively high price, I was disappointed with how they dealt with the boards they loosened in my redwood ceiling. At first they denied this was a result of their work! After arguing about it, they agreed to fix the worst part. The rest was inconvenient, so they just left it. I feel they should have warned me in advance that interior damage was possible, then checked to see whether any had occurred, and all of that should have been included in the contract. Also, as someone for whom masks and vaccines are important during this pandemic, I found that their blatant disregard for Covid protocols made the whole experience less than pleasant for me. read more

Clay redid my tile roof four years ago. Things looked good, but there was a problem with leakage down in the ceiling due to the heavy rains last month. When I called Clay to come and take a look, he was able to pinpoint the problem, and offer possible recommendations and solutions. The new roof he installed was holding up fine, but there was a problem with loose grout in the tiles on an upstairs porch. The roof of our town home in Hiller Highlands developed a leak leading to the interior sheetrock wall of a study during one of the more intense rainstorms of the past month. I called Beethoven's roofing and spoke to Crag Saunders, its boss. He agreed to examine the problem the following day. When he arrived he immediately observed that the leak was likely caused by a defect in the two-piece air vents. These types of vents are no longer used and have been replaced by single piece air vents. He quoted a figure for replacement of all five vents. He explained that the vents could be replaced by his team of roofers. The schedule would depend on the weather conditions. While the crew had several total roof replacement jobs on their schedule, the initiation of these jobs depended on sustained good weather. So when the weather cleared for only one day the Beethoven crew replaced the vents before a larger storm developed. The crew included three well trained roofers who explained to me how they would replace the vents. One of the advantages of hiring Beethoven's roofing is that it is a small competent operation. When you hire them you get the "A team" not the B or C teams. This is particularly important when the panic of a roof leak occurs. As a home owner it is easier to work with an outfit that lacks the levels of bureaucracy that often impede hiring and scheduling decisions of larger companies. Clay did a great job on our flat roof. He was also a pleasure to work with, professional, timely and courteous. Rather than upsell a full roof overhaul which most roofers would do, Clay was not interested in that. He explained the pros and cons, and we were able to get away with a silicone treatment which was less than 50% of the cost and would likely survive longer as well. He backs his work with a warranty. He will go the extra mile to make sure things look right, and will explain how to care for the end result. Best part was knowing that we were supporting local schools as well. Clay gives you the check he prepares so you can send it off yourself. Finally, and most importantly, was the customer service. Clay knew that we are in the process of doing solar on our roof, and he offered at no extra cost to come by and improve the areas around flashings when the solar panels are installed. Beethoven's Roofing did two jobs at my home. The first job was to replace the flashing around my chimney. I also asked Clay, the owner, to advise me regarding how I could extend the life of my roof which is now 25 years old. He found several spots on the roof that needed additional restoration. It was great to work with Clay who is very knowledge. He explained everything by taking pictures of the various issues on the roof. This was incredibly helpful because I never go up on my roof. They determined that an old TV antenna that was no longer in use was causing a problem with the flashing being able to seal correctly. They removed the huge antenna, cut it up into pieces and hauled it away. The work site was left sparkling clean. My second job was to replace all of the rain gutters. Many of them had holes in them because they were made out of galvanized steel which rusts. Clay recommended that I replace them with aluminum gutters which do not have a rust problem. The gutter replacement team was very easy to communicate with. They listened to my concerns regarding eliminating water drainage near the foundation of the house. They also installed piping from one of the gutters along my side stairs which will lead the water away from my house. The new gutters look absolutely beautiful. Again, the worksite was left clean and spotless. I highly recommend this company for all of your roofing needs. They are very knowledgeable, fast and a pleasure to work with. Replacement included siding reconfiguration, wood replacement due to dry rot, dropout modification, drainage enlargement, downspout replacement, and painting. I discovered water stains near the skylight in one room of my house. We haven't even had much rain this year, so I was sure I needed to get an evaluation. Beethoven's Roofing was one of the referrals given by neighbors so I looked them up. Reviews seemed to be good, and I learned that the company donates a percentage of each job to the music programs of Berkeley schools. So I called and talked with Clay about the roof and about a gutter problem that also needed repair. I learned a lot in that call and we set up a time for someone from his company to come and investigate my situation. The representative arrived on time and didn't bother me at all. (Since we were newly in the Covid19 'quarantine' it was best not to have personal contact.) That afternoon I received photos of the problem area and in talking with Clay he gave me more information about my roof and my options. I hadn't realized that the current roof was already 20 years old. The photos and the pressing need for gutter repair convinced me that it was time to get it all replaced. Clay explained everything about different types of shingles and sent me photos so I could choose the color. I was also impressed with the idea of having gutters that only joined at the corners of the house and have a built in mesh on top. No more annual gutter cleaning. The team arrived promptly, worked swiftly and cleaned up as they went along. It took four days, but at the end of each day there was no debris in the garden or driveway. A new skylight system was installed to insure that there would be no more stains on the ceiling. It's hard to have men walking and hammering on your roof, but the guys from Beethoven's were very nice and didn't waste time getting the job done. One thing that impressed me was the finishing: The skylights had to be lifted to install the new fittings so that putty along the inside of each skylight broke off (sweeping that up was my only participation). So I asked to have someone replace that interior puttying. It took a few days, and it was my only moment of concern. But as soon as I gave Clay a little reminder, he contacted a painter who showed up just when he was expected, and took care of the job in no time. I'm very happy with my new roof and downspouts. The cost was high but I was expecting that it seemed like a pretty big job as I felt we were goiged on the price due to the high demand of getting a roof repair after a first rain when roofers are busiest. After he cashed our check for the deposit for the job we could barely reach him and it took him months to actually do the job, quick to cash out check SUPER slow to schedule the actual work. Work which then only took a couple hours meaning we literally paid this jerk thousands of dollars an hour to pour sealant on our roof which he made sound like a way bigger job to justify the price. Now after this week's rain apparently our roof still has huge holes in it that we can see and are leaking. He said the repairs would last 10 years, they did not last 2. On top of all of this he had the audacity to try and bribe me to leave him a 5 star Yelp review by offering me extra work to be done in exchange for this. (Specifically he offered to repair my gutter for free if I left him a 5 star review) This enfuriated me further because I chose him due to a high yelp score which I then realized was bogus because he has been bribing his customers to leave him good reviews. If there were real reviews (not bribed ones) I likely would not have picked him. Long story short, save yourself the time money and headache and go with a different company for your roof or other repairs. Bad work, gouging prices and worst of all dishonest and manipulative in his business practices. read more

I'll be honest in that I am far from an expert on roofs. All I really know is that ours started to leak and we needed a new one. We got the customary three bids. Beethoven's was very competitive, but what really sold us was that Clay was extremely thorough and friendly in his explanation of the work that his crew would do and why it was important. And then pretty much everything that was explained, they followed through on. That part of the job cost gets donated to the local music program was another thing that we could really get behind. Beethoven Roofing just replaced the roof on our 100-plus-year-old architecturally significant triplex. The building is in excess of 4000 square feet and has an extremely steeply pitched roof.
