My house has only been roofed by General Roofing since the 1920s. They have always been responsive & quick. They've helped me during emergencies, reroofs, roof tear downs, etc. Each time, they did the work, the cleanup was so great that I couldn't tell they'd been there. I hired General Roofing to repair a leak in my front porch roof. The estimator came over and told me it could be repaired with a simple treatment that would extend the life of the current roof for two to three years, after which time it would need to be treated again or replaced. I agreed, and his technician came over to "repair" the roof a few weeks later. That same night, we had rain. I had only placed one bucket in the room because I thought the roof was fixed. Unfortunately this was not the case. The entire room was soaked--see photos. I called them and let them know; they said they would someone out to "repair" the roof again. I declined, saying I did not trust their word or their work, and hired another contractor, who came and fixed my roof the following month. Meanwhile, General Roofing has continued to invoice me for the supposed "repair". read more

This company's workmanship does not last past a couple of years. The seams become undone and caused water damage to my building due to the leaks behind the wall. When I called General Roofing Company, one of their project lead came out to look at the roof, he agreed that it was not done up to "standard". He promised me they will rectify the situation. Many phone calls to the company later, I was given the run. around and suddenly no return phone calls. I can't wait for the roof and paid again for the fix to avoid further water damage. They were scheduled to come back on a Monday to finish up but they knew a rain storm was coming in on Sunday so their guys came out on the weekend to make sure everything was done before the storm arrived. We have had General Roofing come out several times to keep our roof on our Montclair house in decent repair over the years. Every visit, they've always gone above and beyond. On their most recent visit to fix a leak, Luis and his brother made repairs all around the roof and cleaned our skylights, all of which was beyond what was required under the work order. They kept us informed regarding everything they were doing on our roof while they were doing it, showing videos of the areas needing repair, and videos of their work when they completed it. General Roofing's contractors have always been very polite, friendly and accommodating. They do a great job at building trust. Our roof will probably give up the ghost within the next few years, and when it does we'll be sure to call General Roofing to replace it. read more

I never went back to update this. This roofing company is a sham. I immediately had a leak on one of the roofs they supposedly redid. They were the only roofing company that said they did not have to cut into the stucco to replace the roof. Big mistake. I guess if I had just put a new roof on top it would have been better. They tried to fix it but ultimately said it was my issue. I should have got a lawyer involved then. I recently did other work and contractor found the leak and it was because General Roofing did it wrong. I had to replace this 6? Year old roof again. It's now perfect and I no longer needed buckets when it rained. This place is a scam. I called them before I replaced the roof to see if they wanted a chance to actually fix it. They never got back to me. I'm tempted to contact licensing bureau and maybe if license is pulled they will respond. Litigation is probably more expensive than the replacing their horrible work. They were the only company that would remove the original tiles, replace the broken with originals and reset the original tiles onto new underlayment. From the estimate by Jesse, the care taken by whole office staff, to Juan and his crew, each phase of the job was a smooth transition. Every General Roofing representative was professional, informative, prompt and detail oriented. As the roof had not been worked on for over 3 decades and we have open beam ceilings, they even sent Daniel, a professional painter, to touch up a couple of spots inside where old paint had chipped easily. I never thought putting on a new roof would become an enjoyable experience. I have highest praise for Bill Richards and the whole team from General Roofing. Everyone I met and interacted with, from administrative and scheduling assistance performed by Marissa to the efficiency and professionalism of Juan, the crew foreman, was of the highest level. Due to some of the intricacies of the job, 3 layers of past roofing materials, an attic with blown insulation, landscaping that needed to be protected, and the unknowns of a house built over 100 years ago, we were cautious about who we would hire. After five different roofing companies gave estimates, all reputable and competent, we chose General Roofing. They have been in business for almost 100 years and for good reason. Bill Richards not only provided the most in-depth explanation of what was needed but was the only contractor who designed a novel solution to the landscaping issues we presented. Of the five estimates we received, they were the most comprehensive in the scope of work performed, highest in quality of materials and workmanship (diamond certified), customized for our particular needs, and price competitive. They got the 2 jobs I gave them done and on budget. They communicated with me regularly and dealt well with any of my concerns. General has taken care of my roof ever since I moved in to my 1920s era house in 2000 and even before that! I used them because the prior and only other homeowner used them over the years. In my experience, they are trustworthy, competent, and quick. They have fixed a major leak (not their fault), re-roofed my house as well put in a new roof. The one time there was a neighbor complaint (they accidentally disturbed her bush) they resolved it quickly and to her liking. She is rather finicky so I was relieved that they took responsibility and resolved the issue without me getting involved. I really like them. read more

They did all the roofs and I was so impressed with their work that I have had them do the roofs on many of my apartments. I had a leak problem in one of my buildings. Don't know how this General Roofing Company made Diamond Certified Ratings! I wouldn't refer this company to anybody. Bill Anderson came out to my residence and gave me a quote on my dry rot repairs.....I told them I was good with the quote and took a copy of the contract. He told me he would put me on a calendar date and get back to me. I asked Bill if I needed to follow up with them, he said " No but they were 3 weeks out." Three weeks later I called and left a message to let me know what day the repairs will get done......no call back. Two weeks after that I call them and someone said oh your job was scheduled today but we couldn't finish other jobs. General Roofing said they would be at my house the next day. Waited for them all day & No Show! I called them back to tell them I wasn't interested in there service.....They said, " JUST CALL ANOTHER COMPANY WE DON'T CARE!" read more

We went with this company in part because of rave reviews with Diamond Certified about their service. Their bid was the highest by far but the promise of worry free and guaranteed service swayed us to go with them. Rather than experience the pride and old time craftmanship that we had been assured, we had a non-English speaking crew run roughshod over our precious home, treating it like a demolition project. They broke plants and trees, cracked plaster, damaged exterior paint where multiple whole chunks were roughly torn to raw wood when they removed our gutters. They applied the top quality shingle product we paid for but then attached some lesser quality, thinner ridge material that doesn't even have a peak to it. For their downspout work they connected one copper part to a pre-existing galvanized part with silver duct tape and in other spots tried to get away with using caulking instead of soldering the copper pieces. The soldering was messy and their guy scorched our stucco house with the flames. Later an expert told us they laid the first course of shingles wrong allowing water intrusion into our walls and we have multiple leaks to this day. The topper? After I agreed to paid half their bill ($12,840) and sent them a 9-page letter of all the reasons they should be happy to get it, the owner Mike Wakerling waited over a year then sued me for the full balance with 18% interest (and more than $2k in added charges they never even billed us for). We now have a flawed, unwarranted roof and gutter system that leaks in many places and have had to spend thousands on experts and legal costs to defend ourselves and it still continues. It seems General Roofing has been operating without permits in Oakland for years. Their work is so deficient as to nullify any guarantees we thought we may have had. Buyer beware! They run more than one crew so it is hard to know what you will get. read more

In fact after getting quotes from three other leading roofing contractors, we went with Mike and Shane Walkering and couldn't have been happier with their work... We had an old wood shingle roof that required everything to be stripped down to the rafters and rebuilt... In addition we removed a false gable from the front of our house... The crew was very professional and cleaned up after every work day... I'm VERY picky about my contractors and was onsite every day of the job to monitor performance and progress... Overall they did a great job and we've had no leaks or issues since the job was completed in January 2010... I tend to use yelp for restaurants and nail salons, but I need to give credit where credit is due. These guys made an intimidating job simple, fast and worry free. As someone who never thought she would need to call for a roof job, I was completely new to the process and super stressed out. But these guys explained everything to me, guided me through the process start to finish, even educated me on the materials they used. I never felt pressured, which was a change from the 2 other companies I called. The price was competitive and they worked with my crazy schedule. The staff was professional and more than that, kind and patient. Which is rare for any kind of construction company these days. They did a great job on half of my roof. Now I wish I'd had them do the whole roof, because the other half wasn't done nearly as well as General's half. General uses top-notch materials, workmanship, and their estimator actually showed up when other companies didn't. My only complaint was the lack of communication regarding delays (I recognize that there was extraordinary rain last year, and every roofer was overbooked), and other issues, but overall, I am a very happy customer. read more

A few years ago I hired General Roofing to replace the roof on our solarium. They did a great job (looks great, too!) so much so that 6 or 7 years later it still looks and perform like new. Unfortunately, I lost track of who did the work and hired others for subsequent roofing jobs. The work product and relationship with the workers noticeably fell short of what I had experienced with General Roofing. Well, I got lucky this time around. I need a deck redo and a skylight installed. I called several roofing companies for estimates including General Roofing who by chance said they would be sending Mike Rodriguez for the estimate. I remembered his name! He was the same gentleman that supervised my solarium project. Just before Mike came over I noticed some discoloration on a ceiling completely separate from the deck redo job. I asked Mike his opinion as to what it was. What I was not expecting was for him to pull out his ladder, deftly isolate the problem and then fix it! Frankly, I was going to have Sierra Roofing deal with it since it was their responsibility. So ask for Mike Rodriguez. Great skills, great knowledge, great guy. I contracted with General Roofing for installation of a roof vent for a bathroom fan and patching & sealing chimney mortar. I've used Diamond Certified companies in the past for other projects so I expected their cost to be on the high end. The price quoted seemed reasonable given I thought they would need interior access to the attic crawl space to cut a hole for the vent and the description of the failing mortar sounded pretty severe. However the reality of the job was that the vent was cut from the roof, not the attic, and the chimney work took about 15 minutes to complete. My contract cost was $950 which included less than $100 of parts & supplies. It took the two guys 50 minutes to complete the work ($850/50 min) which is approximately $17/minute. Even if the quality is great, that's excessive. Agreeing to that cost is on me for not doing enough research & not asking enough questions. My recommendation to you is if you contract with this company for a repair, get them to quote you a 'not to exceed' hourly rate. read more

I want to write a better review of these folks because they are nice people and their work is good. My feedback is based on trying to get them out for an estimate on two different occasions. I have been caught in the cycle of insanity with them where I call and request the estimate, am told to email the address and or details and my email gets caught in a black hole. I have had to follow up over and over again and each time am asked to do the same thing (email request) with no Accountability or follow through. I often need roof work - maintenance or replacement - and can't have a company not follow up with me so often. It's so frustrating to have owners and tenants wanting to get a job done and it goes nowhere. Sorry :( read more
