The temporary fix failed immediately and the representative took no responsibility and tried to blame us (yes we know we needed anew roof but hawks an immediate emergency). They said they would come place a tarp over the area that was leaking but never did that. In addition, their bid was $25,000 more that the courteous and excellent firm we went with. read more

Every single time it rains, we do a little dance at home -- not really for the much-needed rain, but rather for our new roof. We couldn't be more pleased with the work by Collins Roofing. I was immediately impressed by Michael Collins when I met him. You know how you just know right away when someone's a good egg? I knew immediately that Michael would be solid in the running for our job, and that it would be a pleasure working with him. He showed up punctually for our first meeting, took thorough notes, was very clear about how he would proceed and what to expect of him and his crew, and his office provided a thorough and substantive estimate quickly. We had a number of bids, and while his was one of the pricier ones, it also came with the most significant warranty. It also seemed evident that his workmanship would stand up to that longer-lasting warranty. One thing to keep in mind is that because they're good, they book up quickly, especially as the rainy months start to draw near. If your work can hold off and fit into their schedule, you will be glad you waited. Remember, there may be a lull in between the time you "pull the trigger" (signing the contract), and the start of your project. Be patient through this lull because there's really no need to gab. Of course, if you *do* have something to discuss, or have questions, they'll happily answer. Otherwise, you can expect a rapid increase in the communications as things gear up. You'll choose your shingles, any gutters and colors, and such. The week before work started, the Collins team ensured that a port-a-potty was delivered for use by their crew for the duration of the project. The team started to arrive before the noted start time, but were considerate and respectfully quiet for our neighbors. Work began punctually when we expected it to. Sometimes you don't know how good something is until you experience the difference. We were seriously spoiled by the Collins Roofing team, and now appreciate not just their punctuality and work ethic, but how much they enjoy their work. They enjoy being around each other, and when people are respected, appreciated, and enjoy their work, it shows in the results. One of the photos I'm attaching to this review shows the detached shed which was also re-roofed. It was here that I witnessed a prime example of their commitment to quality. After the flashing was in place, I saw one crewmember run his finger over the corner several times. Barely perceptible from where I was standing (and the angle where I shot the subsequent photo), there was a slight imperfection in the way the edges met. I could hardly see it, and only knew that something was there by the attention he was giving to it. After running his fingers over the corner a number of times, he choose to remove it and re-do it. How does the saying go? "Character is how you behave when you think no one is watching." During the course of the work, the Collins crew found a fair amount of previous damage, and rather than just work over it, they described options to repair the damage on a time and materials basis. This is where a shady contractor can gouge you; but despite the nearly two extra days of work added to remove and recover from the previous shoddy work, the add-on cost was shockingly reasonable. I cannot say enough good things about this business, and am only sorry that I have but one roof to replace. read more

Collins Roofing replaced the roof of our 1907 Berkeley brown shingle, finishing the job 1.5 days ahead of schedule. This is a family-run company, and every morning, one of the Collins brothers was on-site, supervising the work. The crew was meticulous in their daily cleanup and protecting our landscaping while doing their work. What made the project uniquely challenging is that quite a few of the original Redwood eaves and facia boards had to be either replaced or repaired. Michael made sure that everything that needed repair was repaired correctly and with the highest quality materials. Replacement eaves matched the original eaves in dimension and wood type (Redwood). Additionally, Michael worked with our solar panel provider, scheduling the panel removal and replacement. Overall, Collins Roofing dramatically exceeded my expectations. We had a really big/complicated roofing job - and were VERY pleased with the work by Collins Roofing. Our home was built in 1930, and we had the original wood shingles with two additional composite roofs on top, with a very very steep pitch. Our house if very "roof forward". Plus a small cottage in the back yard. I reached out to 7 roofing contractors, 4 declined to provide a quote because of the steepness and need for scaffolding. I got three quotes that were all comparable. We choose Collins Roofing because we had heard good things from them, and we were definitely really happy with the choice. They had the scaffolding all set up in one day (a Friday), and then began work on Monday. They had the old roof torn down in one long (12 hour day), and were able to have all the plywood up on Day 2, and all the roofing, fine details, and scaffolding down by Friday! We were amazed at how quickly they were able to work, and during the peak of work had a crew of 11 people working! Michael was really easy to work with, he was easy going and communicative. The entire crew was very professional, cleaned up each day, and we kind to our neighbors. We had no complaints from our neighbors, and I think the fact that they were able to get the job done so quickly played a role in keeping everyone happy. Collins Roofing, Inc. just completed putting a new roof on my North Berkeley home. There were 3 different components to the roof including a bitumen covering on a roof with a parapet wall, a smaller shingle-covered roof, and Spanish tiles that needed to be replaced on the roof at the rear of the house. They did a beautiful job on all three and handled the unexpected (but predictable) problems of additional problems with rotted sub-roofing plywood very fairly and expediently. Day 1 of 2: Seamus Collins told me he was too busy to discuss my concerns about where to be careful in our yard because of blooming flowers, but that they were very experienced. Total, utter fail. They left everything heavy (shingles, tar paper, 12' lengths of wood, garbage, huge ladder) on top of blooming scented violets ($15 for a 4' pot), daffodils, poppies, and groundcovers. The flowers are ruined. And if you think maybe there was nowhere else to leave their stuff? We have a backyard with small patio, a large driveway, and a back deck. Also, they left someone else's permit taped to our front window. We tried to call, they did not pick up. read more

He did little extras too, like while he was up on a ladder he noticed a loose thingamajig that really has nothing to do with the roof, and just fixed it because he knew he could do it easily enough while up there. Lots of little extra touches like that that are most appreciated. The crew was like a well-oiled machine, efficient and friendly. Everyone was masked up through the whole process. Collins Roofing did a great job replacing our roof. They were easy to work with and answered all our questions promptly. We got several bids, and Collins Roofing was one of the highest. We chose them because the low bids all proposed to install only "counter flashing" around our two chimneys and siding. Collin's Roofing was one of the few who proposed to do it right. Plus, they were the only bidder that would put a tarp in attic before starting to tear off old (3 layer) roof and removing tarp before installing plywood, thus minimizing the debris that would remain in attic. Since the bottom layer was 81 year old wood shake, it produced a major mess we did not want in our attic. None of other bidders would put down a tarp beforehand and none would clean attic after job completed. Also, Collins Roofing throughly cleaned up after themselves every day.
