Working with Crow was easy and pleasurable, but also inspiring. Rarely these days does one have the opportunity to engage with a master craftsman: an artist and artisan whose work is meticulous, creative and, ultimately, genius. Not only that, but he's also friendly; he's got integrity--and a great sense of humor. Crow gave us an initial sketch of what we'd described as the deck we wanted, and then he set to work putting it together with extraordinary efficiency. The care he took with every detail was above and beyond good: he even built a "catwalk" out a window for our cats to come and go while their usual opening to the outside world was being remodeled. Of course, excellence doesn't come from genius alone: there are many failed geniuses who demonstrate that. Crow did what was so unusual with contractors, it seems. He communicated with us, checking in routinely to see how we felt about the work. And, also unusual with contractors, he wanted to talk not just with the "man of the house," but also the woman. My wife Marcy felt respected, seen and heard, a rare phenomenon in the world of construction. Because Crow developed trust with us as he worked, at one point he was able to let us know that one part of our plan, while feasible, would probably not ultimately satisfy us. So he suggested a better alternative. And he was right. Crow came through and finished the job on time, despite various obstacles along the way. Also, importantly, he was right on budget. We were all happy with the final project and the beautiful deck we now enjoy, often thinking with deep satisfaction and joy of the whole process of its construction as we sit there in the sun. How many people can say that of what is usually disruptive and even agonizing work on their house? I wish I could think of something negative to say to make this review believable, but the experience really was unbelievably good in the end. Decided to give Crowworks a call after reading the reviews here. My first mistake was to ask if this was Carl (afterall, it is the name on his contractor's license)? I was told that was the name his parents gave him? After explaining I was looking for a contractor to remodel two bathrooms, he proceeded to tell me his price would be $35K to $45K per bathroom without knowing their size or any other details. His low-end price would have been over $1,000 a sq. ft. for my master bath. He was pleasant enough to talk to (why I gave 3 stars) but I couldn't get past his arrogance on pricing. OK, I can understand a contractor not wanting to take on small jobs, but don't insult my intelligence by representing some extravagant price as marketplace fact. read more

We met Crow (and Drew) because they did some inventive remodeling at the home of some close friends of ours. We liked the rain awning that he created for an entranceway there and asked our neighbor, a contractor who has done extensive work on our house, what he would suggest for our entryway and front steps. His recommendation was for something simple, uninteresting and not necessarily sufficient. Crow turned out to be available and and came over for a conversation and review of our entranceway. He quickly pointed out that a simple roof would be inadequate to stop wind from blowing rain against the door and soaking the area. He texted me some photographs of relevant work he had done, proposed a solution and then drew a mockup of a gracefully carved archway piece. Within a few days he had created a template for the arch, supports and roof structure. He was enthusiastic about the work and we liked his ideas, agreed and gave him the go-ahead to undertake the work. He acquired suitable redwood and quickly translated the drawings into pieces of sculptural, wooden elements. The roof and side panels went together very smoothly and proved very successful when we had rain. He was quick to design drainage solutions to go along with the structure itself. Although he had other projects to work on, it was only three weeks from start to installation and completion of the project and we are very, very happy with the result. We first contacted Crow about a bathroom remodel in 2013, while scoping out contractors for a bathroom remodel. We didn't do the job for another four years, mainly for financial reasons, but we were so impressed by Crow that when decided to do the job in 2017 we went straight back to him. The job we contracted Crow to do was complicated. Our mid-century house came with an awkward bath plus half bath setup, the two rooms divided by a flimsy pocket door. The working concept was to transform the smaller half bath--with only a sink and a toilet--into a full bath, with shower. Remodeling the other bathroom would be easier: we planned on taking back the room to the studs, replacing all the components, faucets, and fixtures--but preserving more-or-less the original layout. Working with Crow was a pleasure throughout. He and his partner Drew were patient, empathetic, and utterly professional throughout the entirety of the job. Despite some pretty major construction work going on, the job site was clean and orderly throughout, and Crow and Drew cleaned diligently at the end of each working day. We were able to remain in the house throughout the entire job (we opted to spend a week off site towards the end in order to expedite completion, but that was our choice). Still, stressing Crow and Drew's professionalism isn't the half of it; what really made Crowworks such an outstanding choice for us was their combination of technical skill and artistic vision. Squeezing a shower into a small half bathroom was no mean feat. We weren't altogether sure that it could be done, and other contractors were uncertain. But Crow had a compelling vision, and he worked carefully with the City of El Cerrito in order to ensure that the solutions he devised were all code compliant. He made brilliant use of mirrors, windows, tiling, and other design elements to achieve an aesthetic that was not only elegant and refined but also remarkably spacious, given the room's tiny footprint. Drew, meanwhile, designed and manufactured custom-made vanity units for both bathrooms. The pieces are really works of art--from the curved legs that he conceived as a design feature to the elegant, two-tone joints on the interior of the drawers. Suffice to say that the job produced not only two beautiful, perfect bathrooms but also, with Drew's vanity units, the two nicest pieces of furniture that we own! Thanks to Crowworks, we turned the two nastiest rooms in our house into the two best rooms in the house. We would work with Crow again in a heartbeat and recommend him with unrestrained enthusiasm. Crow completed a bathroom remodel project for us over the pandemic. Crow is an artist, engineer, architect all rolled into one. He did an excellent job with a dated bathroom and transformed it completely. He has an eye for detail in his work and an artistic aesthetic. He pretty much completed the whole project from start to finish- from brainstorming concepts with us, permits, selecting and picking up materials, and executed it flawlessly. He kept us informed every step of the way and worked through a few surprised that came up. We enjoyed his work so much we also did a second project with him, to add fencing to our yard. He completed both projects timely, added his artistic flair to them and kept a handle on the budget throughout. Crow was extremely civid-safe too.
