This is a chain restaurant, which I've seen in all the touristy areas of London - Westfield, High Street Kensington, Covent Garden... As it's a chain, I arrived intending to hate it. The menu looked long, which in my experience is never a good sign as it means the chef can't specialise on doing a few things well. But it turns out I was completely wrong as the long menu just means that there are more options - there's a meal for every mood. Feeling healthy? Try the salad, which is substantial. The sea bass is also mighty fine. Need a treat? There's a lot of hearty meat based dishes on the menu. Prices are really affordable for central London - you can have a very good quality and filling meal for two including a drink for £40 and that includes the tip. Cocktails start at just £5, which is incredibly cheap. Make sure to save room for the Eton Mess dessert - it's divine. read more

Bill's has a great vibe and is located in the 'hip' new St Martin's Courtyard development in Covent Garden. Despite being ever so slightly off the tourist trail, Bill's has a prime spot right next to the (mentally) popular Jamie's Italian (people were queuing for a table at Jamie's at 5pm on a Sunday evening). If you can't get in at Jamie's, give Bill's a go instead. This is the first Bill's in London, and it's a cafe-cum-grocery-store-cum bar-cum-restaurant type of place. I went here today for hot chocolate and cakes after a "strenuous" afternoon of shopping, and felt very much at home, with jars of yummy preserves adorning the walls, cute candles on the stripped wooden tables and gentle soul music wafting around the colourful room. Nice. Service was a perhaps a little laid back for my liking, and it took a while to be seated, even though there were a few tables available. And the hot chocolate, yet again, WASN'T HOT ENOUGH, despite having requested it to be extra hot. Still, it came with a mound of whipped cream and a flake on top, so musn't grumble. But unfortunately I've minused a star for these factors (yeah, I know I could've sent the hot choc back, but - hey - I'm English). The scones were immense and the jam was so tasty that I shamelessly polished it off with my knife. Oops. You can browse through the grocery list on your table, choose what you want, and the servers will do your shopping for you as you eat and package it all up in a lovely paper bag with hessian ribbon etc etc. Perhaps a bit 'rah' for everyday bits and bobs, but would make a nice present for someone I guess. When I got home an hour or so after leaving Bill's I had chocolate brownie all over my face, which - in my books at least - is a very good sign indeed. JUST MAKE YOUR HOT CHOCOLATE HOTTER!! I really like the Bill's in Brighton, so it is somewhat reluctantly that I give this Bill's only 3 stars. Things I love about Bill's in London: -tasty, reasonably priced food -diverse menu with plenty of choices for vegetarians, omnivores and carnivores alike -friendly servers who allowed our large group of friends to completely take over the big table in the centre of the restaurant and set up shop for 3.5 hours. Things I feel reservations about: -It feels like it's becoming a chain. The interior is just TOO much like the Bill's in Brighton, and in this setting, it feels contrived for some reason. I wish there was something a bit more unique about the inside that distinguished it from the other Bill's. -The location is sort of dreary. It's in a bit of a mall-like establishment just off Long Acre, squeezed between a Jamie's Italian and other chain establishments. This worries me. Still, I have no complaints about the dinner we had at Bill's. It really didn't let me down, and it was a good spot to gather with a big crowd. read more

Bills, oh Bills! What can I say - even uttering its very name leaves me salivating at the mouth. Although it's a chain (a small one mind), Bills is one of those rare finds that leaves you completely satisfied, yet craving more the second you've licked your plate clean. It's the crack of the brunch world. Bills is open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, but breakfast/brunch is by far the best time to dine. Portions are generous, prices are very reasonable and they don't seem to skimp on anything. The menu has everything from your traditional English fry-up to Eggs Benedict, french toast, fried bubble & Squeak and pastries galore! There's a wealth of choice and all of it looks too good to pass up. Each meal is a classy work of art ready for knife and fork demolition. I've heard rave reviews about their full-English, but I can't ever seem to wrestle myself away from my favorite meal, the veggie breakfast (I'm not even Vegetarian!). Veggies listen up... this is not your usual fair of mushrooms and wilted tomato. Oh no! Bills Vegetarian feast is a mountain of creamy eggs, guacamole, hummus, perfectly sauteed mushrooms, fresh basil leaves and decadent chili sauce all piled high on freshly baked country toast. It's a kaleidoscope of color and flavor in every bite, and to this day, I can honestly say that I haven't had anything quite like it. For £1 more, you can add beans or bubble and squeak to any of the meals mentioned above. If you want to experience the breakfast of dreams, I highly recommend getting the B&S. Bill's is definitely not your local greasy spoon. In the place of dirty lino flooring and wooden paneled walls you get rustic, French-country decor and a warm ambiance. Was telling myself that I'll have to allocate some breakfast to try out other restaurants during my short time in London, but still ended up having two breakfasts here! Always love the atmosphere and decor, very comfortable and homey, even though it feels like you are eating in a hipster corner/convenient/grocery store lol. I always ordered a pot of tea with Bill's breakfast. The pot of tea was huge and the full breakfast's portion was big and delicious. Though many locals came and bought coffee to-go, made me wonder if I should try out Bill's coffee. However, my reflex every time was to get tea and usually I was too full to get another cup of coffee...maybe next time. :P Also tried pancakes due to friend's recommendation. It was good and different from what I usually have! At first I was wondering if the syrup was enough (I am so Americanized in this aspect...), but found out that the pancake batter was already seasoned! With a hint of saltiness and extra jam/berry in the middle, it was delicious. There were also some fresh fruits on it. The store is excellently presented and extremely colourful with the products giving a real feel of a quaint mix between a country cafe and a general store. I love Bill's. I went because it was cheap and had pretty good reviews on yelp, and I was pleasently surprised. As soon as you step in, there's a wow factor from all the things on the wall. Olive oils, jams... So many yummy things to grab and take home! We shared a mezze as a starters which was very very good, with freshly toasted bread: a great start. It is a lot smaller so it feels like less of a drafty warehouse but it retains the gimmicky tins of produce like olive oil for all you Bill's fans. Went to eat at Bill's last night with a group of 5 people. The ambiance was exactly what we were looking for however that was the only positive aspect of this experience. I ordered the beet and goat cheese risotto; my fiend ordered the burger and the other 3 friends had the ribeye. The steaks were ordered medium and came out cold and basically rare. My risotto tasted like canned beats. The burger was ok. The servers did not seem to know what they were doing, requiring multiple staff to attend to each table. We did complain to the manager and she did bring out and extra burger for the table and did not charge us for the steaks (hence 2 stars instead of 1). Although I do appreciate her customer service, the poor attention to the food being served and the quality of the food prompted me to write this review. My group is from NY. The place looks great but I encountered a moody, incredibly unhelpful server. The place had 5 people eating and was not busy in the slightest. I asked for an Eggs Benedict but was informed that I had arrived after the midday cutoff for breakfast. I then asked if the server would mind asking the chef as the restaurant was at 10% capacity and as the dish is very quick to prepare. The answer I received was a stern - NO. There was zero attempt to aid my query or suggest any alternative dish. For a restaurant that is renouned for it's breakfast/brunch I would have expected my short haired female member of staff to have ar least tried to help a customer. Good brunch option away from the madness of Covent Garden. As many of the other reviews say, the decor is that of a general store with lots of Bill's home food products on display for purchase. Exposed ceilings are balanced out with brightly colored stacks of tissue paper (for wrapping purchases) and gives a warm atmosphere. There can be a little bit of a wait, but even with no reservation, the staff are good about getting you seated within 10 minutes or so. You may have to share a long table with others but it's not cramped at all. The food is above average but nothing to absolutely die for, juices are fresh squeezed, coffee is freshly brewed, and smoothies are freshly made. The brunch menu comprises of the usual range of options - we had the vegetarian version of the english breakfast and the eggs royale and both were good. It was busy, but we were seated within 10-15 minutes after we arrived after being quoted a 20-30 minute wait. Our server never once forgot about us, even with so many other tables in his section, and was able to make recommendations that made it clear he knew the menu well. My boyfriend enjoyed Bill's calamari much more than Sartori, although I thought they were both very good. My paprika-and-lemon chicken with root veggies was incredible, as was the mini doughnut dessert. I'm a fan of the chain, but this location left me feeling somewhat disappointed. I had booked in for a group of about 10 girlfriends for an afternoon tea. While our table was reserved, we had to wait to get to the table. The main waiter for the table was not responsive, and we had to ask three times for table water. Besides that, the food was great. It's an awesome alternative to an afternoon tea for a lower price. They offer the champagne tea, but with a twist. We were heading to London on the weekend and as we were so tight for time ( travelling there & back & doing a show all in one day), I wanted somewhere I could book online and be sure of prompt service. I needed somewhere with interesting food but also with plain options (steak, for my fussy dad), good cocktails & reasonably priced. After trying Bills in a few cities I thought it was worth a shot in London. It was easy to get a table for 4 at lunchtime by booking online a week before. I picked this branch as it was central & a short distance from the theatre. We arrived on a sunny lunchtime and this is where it loses a star...the position of the outdoor space was out of the sun! Not really Bill s fault though! We took a table inside & im glad we booked as there was a queue out the door & we were given a lovely table in a quiet spot next to a sunny window on the second floor. No one barging past us & nice & close the bathroom ( which was tiny but clean). The brunch menu was still in operation at 12.15 but luckily we could pick from the lunch time menu. There is a great selection and we decided to go for burgers taking advantage of upgrading our burgers with additional items. I picked to have avocado on my buttermilk chicken! My dad had the steak and chips (no salad, no blood) & ordered rosemary and potato bread to go with it. The drinks arrived quickly, we went for a rosehip gin based cocktail, Camden Hells for the boy & cider for my dad. I like that the range of drinks are quite independent, different from other chains. After this cocktail we ordered Bills green garden, another gin based cocktail, this one fresh with the taste of elderflower, cucumber and apple. It was so delicious that we will serve it at our wedding. The food arrived! Thankfully my dad s food arrived as ordered! My burger came with the avocado on the side which worked well but I expected it to be on the burger as it was ordered as an addition not a side. The buttermilk chicken was a good size and well coated and I enjoyed the sour dough bun it arrived on. The sweet potato fries were crispy and not greasy. The chipotle mayo ensured that the burger had a kick. The beef burger looked incredible too - moist beef that is served medium or well done & this time with skin on fries. There must have been plenty as my mum was sharing them out! Tables were cleared promptly and dessert menus arrived! We were so full (& had spotted a gelato parlour) that we decided to leave it! None of the options set my world on fire so hopefully these will be reviewed when a new menu is put together. It was missing a light option outside of the ice cream. Located at Covent Gardens, I'd have to say that the food pricing would be considered very affordable and this is one chain cafe/restaurant that I'll come back to. This place was nothing short of a disaster. We went in around 1:30pm for lunch on a Friday. They told us it would be a 10 minute wait and gave us menus. Well after 10+ minutes we noticed how many empty tables there were, and they informed us that the kitchen was "blocked" because they had had such a rush on tables and that they wouldn't seat us because they couldn't take our order because they wouldn't serve us for a while. We convinced them to let us sit to take a load off our feet and to at least order some drinks. We were after 15 minutes allowed to order. The food was decent--I had a tasty burger although it came a bit too rare and the chips were good. It was pricey, service even once the kitchen was opened was not great, and you would think they would have their act together. The only good thing about this place is the Fairtrade basmati rice sold in Fairtrade cotton bags. read more

It was my first visit to this branch and I fell smack bang in love with the triple-storey floor to ceiling bookshelves (albeit most were filled with carefully-stacked food tins rather than books - but anyone else who saw Beauty & The Beast and has craved Belle's library ever since will know what I mean!). I was with one of my fussier-eating friends but there's something for everyone on the menu here. My chorizo & hummous burger from the specials was something different and a solid choice (though the chorizo kept trying to escape), and served on a cute chopping board with a mini bucket of shoestring skin-on fries mmm. Among the others, the grilled sea-bream with slaw also looked pretty good, though there wasn't as much fish in the fish finger sandwich as I'd have expected. Service was a bit hit-and-miss sadly - generally took a while to get their attention. Our first server was fun, confident and seemed on the ball until she brought out the wrong bottle of wine. Not a big deal (though it didn't sound anything like the same one). We also made the mistake of saying we weren't in a rush to leave at the end when another waitress told us the card machine was being used on another table. She promptly forgot about us and disappeared, and we finally got someone else's attention after another 15mins. Good-sized portions so we (unusually!) ran out of room for dessert. Still think some of the dishes are on the pricey side for what you get (like the side of sweet potato fries for £3.55?) but overall a solid choice for a group meal - esp if you're not sure how adventurous everyone is food-wise. Bill's came on a recommendation from a concierge and it sounded like it was going to keep me away from pub food so I bit. On finding that this was a concept specialty foods market plus restaurant I became a bit hesitant - places like this tend to trade on their cuteness and Bill's looked like no exception. Dried peppers hanging from the ceiling, shelves stocked with the bright labels of Bill's branded chutney, Bill's branded beans, Bill's branded elderflower syrup. It all seemed a bit too conscientious about it's own atmosphere. But I was too hungry to go anywhere else and too afraid that all that I'd find was a pub with microwaved beef pasties for lunch. The busy restaurant was out of some of the breakfast items by the time I was seated late into Sunday brunch but, the burgers being walked by on wood planks looked good and there was a nice selection of vegetarian items on the menu. Many items on the have a Mediterranean and Moroccan bent to them and I settled on the halloumi and hummus sandwich served with chips (that's fries to Yanks like me). The sandwich didn't disappoint: it is served on a heartier hamburger bun, the halloumi lightly grilled and the sandwich spread with hummus and mild pepper sauce - all very mild. The invitation to 'shop from your table' is a bit weird - I'm not sure that I'd ever want to stock my larder while out to brunch but perhaps this let's the time compressed have an extra glass of prosecco and still get their Sunday grocery shopping done. read more

Went for brunch and I was horribly hungover. I'd been for dinner at the one in Soho and the one in Holborn (separate reviews coming up) and it's always been a safe bet. (at least the one in Soho..) but this one was hmmm.. ok? Brunch was nice, but nothing special. I had green eggs on sourdough with pumpkin seeds, an overpriced smoothie and tea. A place I discovered a month ago or so when I decided to find a new place in Covent Garden as I was a bit bored of the places I know. So I walked through St Martin's Courtyard and saw a nice casual place right next to Jamie Oliver's restaurant, which was busy as usual. So I decided to go in this place and I loved it from the moment I entered. I probably wasn't objective as I entered I saw the very tall wall on the left, with all the produce displayed delicatessen style and I just fell in love with it. I didn't experience the slow service that the reviews below describe, as I was seated straightaway although they were pretty busy. There was a couple of tables available inside and in the terrace. The glass doors were fully open as it was quite warm so being inside was very pleasant too, so we stayed in and enjoy the place's atmosphere. On that occassion I wasn't really hungry so we shared a mezze board. The food served was really taste and it had all been done in-house, which was noticeable. However, its size was not generous, so it was a good thing that we weren't too hungry that day. I then had a hot choc and a brownie and both were yummy (and I am a choc expert, me ;) I then have been back for a full English breakfast, which was really lovely. I sat outside that day, on one of these gorgeous sunny days we have had recently, and it really is a very enjoyable terrace right next to Picadillly and Covent Garden, as there is not a road in sight and you feel quite away from the hustle and bustle (except for the traffic noise, unfortunately) I have been back another couple of times for a coffee and a cake, and it is definitely a good option for this too to take a break from a shopping trip in Covent Garden. Finally, I went last Saturday night and I was quite hungry this time. I had the chicken, chorizo and butterbean stew, and it was delish! Plus the portion was generous too, which helps :) Oh, and it was good quality chorizo too, which was appreciated. Next time I will go and explore the produce they sell more and will probably buy a couple. I have taken a few different people here and everyone really liked it and found it different and a great option to know of in the Covent Garden area. Oh, the service has been always friendly. Breakfast at Bill's they all cried. Trust me, we were close to crying at the end. I ordered pancakes. Wife ordered Eggs Benedict My pancakes were OK, nothing to shout about and remember, these are American-style pancakes. Even I can do a good pancake. The maple syrup on their was scrooge-like (by the end, I was sweeping pieces of pancake across my plate to suck up the drying remains of the maple syrup (which was of the worse quality, I have tasted good syrups - Maine, Vermont etc and bad ones - sugar syrup from McD. This was of the latter). At least I was lucky enough to get a brekkie. The wife's eggs benedict when arrived was HARD-BOILED. You could hard-boil and egg and still be softer than how it arrived. Again, a poached egg. Its boiling water, chuck an egg in, turn water off and leave for three mins. You dont need to be Jamie Oliver. The hollandaise sauce that she got must have again, been rashioned or its one of those posh eats where less is more. Drinks were expensive and after complaining, they did take the Eggs B off the bill but still came to over £15 (eeeek!!!) The shop itself reminded me of what it would be like if Lush sold food. Overpriced boutique bottles of lemonade. And the decor was just trying to hard to be in with the cool kids who wants this sort of crap over a decent greasy caff. in summary. Incredible brunch and great, hip atmosphere. We are big on vibes - and this place has chill music, a comfortable environment, and most importantly delicious food. My husband and I visited on a Monday morning and had no issue getting a table immediately. We ordered the bread basket (highly recommend) and got an assortment of freshly baked croissants and breads - all still warm from the oven. I love Bills! Great place for Brunch or dinner - I've been here a few times to catch up with friends and have always enjoyed it. It has a really warm and friendly environment (love that they have all of their products on the walls too!) When it's busy it can take a little while to get a seat but I've never waited any more than about 10-15 mins. The food is also great value for money considering the quality. They also serve good portions of food. I'm a huge fan of their fish cakes! Staff are very friendly and know how to have a joke or two.
