I have taken my bike to get looked at and have taken a mechanics class here. When I got my bike looked at, I booked a "Learn and Repair" which is where you take your bike in for a 40 minute appointment for any repair where they will talk you through what they are doing and then provide a suggested price. I highly recommend checking this out for the fair pricing, getting your bike repaired by either an employee there or a volunteer with supervision, and learning how to fix that issue in the future. The mechanics class was very informative and the instructor was accommodating as well as knowledgeable. It is a bit pricey at $300, but it is worth it in my opinion since taking your bike in to a mechanic for every issue can become very expensive very quick. They also have very affordable bikes, equipment such as tubes and locks, and a used parts shop. I highly recommend Bikes Together for your affordable bike needs! read more

Super bummed to not have a good experience here. After getting my bike wheels stolen, I came in with the frame, asking for helping finding new wheels. I felt dismissed and was told to go search for wheels by myself. I expressed that I don't know a lot about bikes and that I don't know what to look for, and got a brief and unhelpful explanation before the employee walked away. It was overwhelming on a day where I was already feel distraught over my bike. A different employee did come out and offer to help me (twice) after I walked outside with my bike to cry on the sidewalk and wait for a friend. I appreciate them trying to fix the situation, but I was really turned off by my initial interaction. read more

Took a road bike I had recently bought off craigslist to Bikes Together to see what work might be needed on it. They were so helpful and kind! They cleaned up my bike, checked the chain, and filled the tires, at no cost. I did pay for new handlebar wraps and the labor that comes with it - $35. I haven't ridden a bicycle in over a decade, and recently I've been interested in bicycling around the city more. I didn't want to invest too much as I didn't know if I would enjoy it or not. So, I acquired a fixer upper. As I was searching for a place to take this fixer upper in for a look over, I stumbled across Bikes Together. Bikes Together is a local non-profit that isn't only a retail stores that also provides full service, it also provides space to fix your own bike. If you're not too familiar with bike mechanics, volunteers can provide instruction and guidance. I brought my bike and worked with a few volunteers. All my bike needed to get it up and running was a tube replacement, some lubrications, and a few adjustments. I now know how to replace my bike tube! Awesome bike shop / non-profit in the Lincoln Park / Golden Triangle / Baker neighborhood. They sell new and used parts and bikes. Lots of bins filled with every used part you'd ever need. The best part is their repair shop, where you can bring your bike in to fix yourself, with all the tools and help from the knowledgeable staff. Took my 04 road bike, which I've used for tri its whole life, in for the DIY time. Learned a lot, they had all the right equipment for some advanced tuning, and the volunteers were very nice. Hands on advising is the best approach! New parts prices at cost, bins of used parts (we opted to adjust a clipless pedal rather than take a more-worn one, though - it's function over form here) and you donate on top of that if anything. The neighborhood for Mariposa is gentrified AF so to this DC transplant, who is also a mild mannered small woman, it seemed less "edgy" than ho hum cookie cutter, even after dark. Though it's a drive, BT may be my new LBS. read more

I had a terrible experience with this company. I registered my 11 year old son for their two week bike camp this summer. I registered back in April and paid $500. I received a confirmation email, with multiple misspelled words. Shortly there after, I emailed and left two voicemails for the camp coordinator, asking if I could change the dates as they conflicted with another camp my son wanted to attend. No response. We decided to go on vacation instead so I didn't pursue it. Two days before camp, while we were out of the country, I received an email stating his bike inspection form was due. Again I emailed and left several voicemails explaining we were out of the country returning the day before camp started. No response. Also, at this point I had no information as to where to drop him off, pick him up, etc. I called the store and the phone just rang and rang. I followed the prompts to leave a voicemail for several of the leaders of the organization and received a message that their mailbox didn't exist. I called the other location and left a voicemail. Again, no response. So at this point I was feeling pretty uncomfortable leaving my child in the hands of a camp that couldn't return my multiple contact attempts over a three month period. Family members agreed this didn't sound safe, so I left yet another voicemail that I didn't feel safe and wanted a refund. ONE HOUR before I was to drop my son at camp, I finally received an email from the director giving the location where to drop my son off. There was also another phone number listed in the email, which I called twice before finally connecting with the camp director, who was clueless and unprofessional. I requested a refund, which was provided. I request a follow up call from the manager---no response. I would not recommend trusting these people with your child. read more
