Out of over 40 different restaurants visited in Destin, this is my top choice.
We were warmly greeted and seated immediately. The hostess made sure we had water poured once we were seated and gave us the name of our server, who would be with us shortly.
Two minutes later a server named Betsy greeted us with a smile and asked us about beverages. I had a question about types of gin they carried. She ran down the list and recommended I try a brand called Brooklyn that I've not heard of and my lady had a specialty cocktail.
The gin was very tasty and the cocktail was crisp and refreshing.
After delivering our cocktails, Betsy gave us a history of the restaurant and information about the chef, Jack McGuckin, who is from southern Louisiana.
Betsy was poised and professional but had the southern friendliness that we are known for in the South.
She knew her menu and gave us all the information we needed to choose our dishes.
We started with the Lobster Spring Rolls.
The appetizer came with two spring rolls, each containing one half of a lobster tail. The dish was served with 3 sauces, a Tai sauce, a light wasabi aioli and a peanut sauce. There was enough sauce for both spring rolls and was artfully painted on the plate.
He nailed this dish! I've never had a more perfect lobster spring roll than this. Every bite left me wanting more and we would have ordered more but had so much food to look forward to that we refrained. Each half of tail was lightly battered and tempura fried and wrapped in a spring wrapper. There was a garnishment of Green soba noodles and they were so tasty I would have ordered them as a side dish to my dinner.
During our ordering my lady questioned herself if she could eat a whole salad and Our server said she would be happy to split one for us.
We decided on the fried oyster salad. The salad came to the table already split. Each half had 3 crispy oysters, warm spinach leaves, chopped eggs, bacon and a bacon aioli dressing. Let me say that the salad comes with 5 oysters but the chef and Betsy made sure we had 3 oysters on each of our split salad plates. I just thought this showed that the chef wanted us to enjoy our food without us having to feel guilt over getting the extra oyster. Ha.
The salad was awesome. The oysters were fried and seasoned just right and the dressing was served in creative dollops on the edge of the plate. You could add as much or as little of it as you wanted to the salad mix. It was too tasty not to use all of it.
The servers and staff were like ninjas. I say this because I didn't see them standing over the tables or interrupting conversations but the moment you needed something, there was someone there waiting to take care of you. My water was never less than half full at anytime and didn't have to look around to order a second gin.
My lady ordered one of the specials of the evening. I wish I could remember the name of the dish and cannot do it justice by trying to describe it as it was not a tradition grouper with seafood and homemade cornbread. I only had a bite of her dish and it was elegant. The cornbread was "not your mama's" cornbread. It was chef created and was scrumptious with the sauce from the dish.
I ordered the 20oz bone in ribeye cooked medium rare and added the crabmeat on top. Our server told me that the crab came with a hollandaise sauce on top of the steak and asked if I would like it on the side in case it would change the taste of my steak. Great question!!!
This piece of prime meat was served atop of fingerling potatoes.
Chef McGuckin nailed this steak!!! I think it's Emeril that says BAM. Well that's how I felt when I took the first bite. Perfection. I looked up at my lady and she asked me what was wrong from the shocked look on my face. This was just the very best steak I've ever had is all. The meat was definitely prime quality, it could "not" have been cooked better. And best of all, the steak tasted like steak! I have no idea what type of seasonings were used. I wish I did as I would use it at home. There was a small dish of Bearnaise sauce on the side that just kicked the ribeye to another level.
Dinner was finished with a 30 yr port that was not overly expensive and though all of the deserts looked delicious, we were stuffed and I ended with a mixed berry sorbet that was light and refreshing.
The wine menu looked extensive but not being a wine drinker, I cant comment....but I can say that every table had a bottle of wine or three on it.
This restaurant has it right. Profession servers and staff, an elegant ambience, prime food and a Chef that knows what he is doing in and out of the kitchen.
The price was very reasonable. For 4 drinks, lobster appetizer, oyster salad, special of grouper and seafood dish, 20oz cowboy ribeye with added extra of crabmeat on top, a port wine and two sorbets, we spent 200.00.
The only regret I have is that we found this restaurant the final night that we were in Destin this time. read more
