I had heard that Big Level Grocery had legendary burgers so we went to find them. It was just by chance that we did because the only thing I knew was that there was "some place out in the country in the middle of nowhere" that had these burgers that we needed to try. However, my friend could not remember the name of the place or the location. A Google search for burgers near Wiggins seemed to match up. When that sites reviews began to sound familiar to what I had heard we bet on it. And WOW did we hit the jackpot. This small country store on King Bee Road accessible from Hwy 15 north of Ramsey Springs by the Fire Department heading west or from Hwy 26 off of Flint Creek Road then East on King Bee from Wiggins (both in Stone County) is a burger gem. The place is an old store originally established about 1929 or so and rebuilt after a fire. It's pretty far out in the country so be patient and enjoy the scenery if you come from far away. We went for the burgers which are available from 11-2 but the owner warned me on a previous scouting day that there is a long line at lunch time. The burgers are of an old fashioned fare of fresh ground 1/3 lb Angus beef. Dressed options are lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, mustard, mayo, ketchup, cheese, bacon, jalapenos. They are cooked on a flat top grill. Hawaiian or regular bun $4.50 each. These things are worth the trip. Juicy, hot, wrapped in foil if you want it to go and not just filling, but the meat fills the bun to the very last bite. Seriously these burgers are great! They have a fantastic flavor and texture like the burgers reminiscent of the old drive-ins. Add a large fry for $1.75. The fries are old school home-style cut fresh from huge Russet baking potatoes. The taste and texture is as if you had made them yourself at home. But the store itself is a general mercantile. So you can also get fishing supplies, hoop cheese, head cheese, deli cuts, drinks, gas, postal services, and tall tales from various regular customers. Check out the pictures of the old place and rattlesnake photos from the forest. The folk here are super nice, friendly and accommodating. They host the Big Level Days event here which is a community celebration at the end of October every year. This year it is on Saturday October 28, 2017. Be sure to come by the Chicken Drop booth and place your cash on the winning number. The chicken will do the rest. Those old schooler's from the Gulf Coast who remember the Chicken Drop lounge in Salt Bayou, Louisiana will have fond memories of this one--so mark your calendar. Regardless, if you want a fantastic burger be sure to take the drive through the country to grab some seriously good grub. Other sandwiches and various jarred counter pickles available too. There is an old oak tree with a bench around it to sit on (as many distance bike riders do) and when the wild flowers are in bloom it is a wonderful outing. But you may just want to sit inside and visit with the kind folks and have some coffee with your groceries. You'll be welcomed like nobody's business and want to come back often. read more
