Its been to long since we were last here so we stopped in again. I love the food here! We walked in and were greeted immediately and given a menu. Once you've looked it over you ring the bell and place your order. It isn't a long wait and you're eating delicious bbq! I love the decor here as its very Hawaii. They have books and games too! Was a beautiful day and happened to be cruising towards this place I had been meaning to try. Parking lot was empty and not a soul in sight when I pulled in on a Tuesday afternoon around 2:30 PM. Ventured in and was immediately greeted and pointed towards the menu. Although multiple items caught my interest, I settled on the Slaw-Py Pulled Pork Sammy! The person taking my order at the counter verified I want it as-is including the Spicy Sauce. That's a resounding "Yes please!". I grabbed a seat at the little bar and enjoyed the ambiance and decorations of the place. The food came out and I was struck by the serving vehicle chosen, a small fry pan. The cornbread was neatly wrapped up in plastic wrap and handed to me separately. The first bite was all I needed to know why the small frying pan was used! The juices dripping down my hands and the mouthful of delicious slaw, pulled pork and egg and sauces confirmed I made the right lunch choice. The pan caught all the juices nicely as I devoured the Sammy! The crunch of the slaw, hints of sweetness from the BBQ sauce, richness from the egg, saltiness from the bacon, and the juicy pulled pork with the Caribbean flavor and spice just all balanced so well and makes you forget the river of juices flowing all over your hand. The cornbread was equally moist and had some cornmeal on top for a bit of a crunchy texture. My party also ordered two hamburgers, which they raved about, as well as chili (yum!) and pulled pork sandwich (another thumbs up!) The owner, Sean, came over to us and chatted for a while. Either they picked them up at Goodwill for .99, or god forbid, they actually cook in them! What's wrong with these people? They're in the food business and they are literally serving a healthy dose of forever Teflon with each sandwich. The sandwich immediately fell apart to there is no choice but to use a knife and fork. My son and I went pretty close to closing in January and we were the only ones in the restaurant. There were a lot of people coming in for take out though. The service was super quick and friendly. I had the ribs with the potatoes and corn bread. They were so good. The seasoning is fantastic. It was the perfect balance of salty and smoky flavor. This little gem is right around the corner. I travel a lot for job (25 states) and have eaten BBQ in many places. Every time I try the chicken it is usually dry and not well seasoned. However, this place is amazing! I ordered the Solana sandwich and the chicken was moist, seasoned perfectly and extremely tasty. The Cole slaw was delicious as well and the service was fast. I can't believe I had to come to New Hampshire for such excellent chicken BBQ. I will be here again in a couple of weeks and will try the ribs next. Traveling through New Hampshire , we found this place just off of the highway. I ordered the bay of pigs tacos ($16 each) and my wife ordered The Slaw-Py Pulled Pork Sammy ($18 each) and two Poland spring bottled waters ($3 each). The tacos were a slight disappointment for two reasons. The first being that the tomatoes were very wet which caused the tacos to be super soggy. I really like that crisp tortilla, and they appeared that they were grilled to perfection prior to the tomato's being added. Additionally the pork was a bit on the dry side. I typically like a moist pulled pork, and perhaps I just got a drier section of the pan? I'd definitely stop back again, but I'd probably grab something different vs. the tacos again. Also on a side note, and yes I know this happens everywhere, but, I am always a bit surprised when a bottled water exceeds 1.50. Shame on me for not asking the cost prior, but the drinks were not marked. I assumed that a bottled water would be a reasonable cost, but I personally don't think that is reasonable. I was out and about in the Hooksett area. I was with my buddy Kenny. We were so busy when we looked at the clock we realized it would be a late lunch. I used yelp and we decided on some bbq. We went to the Big Kahuna and were pleasantly surprised. It's cute on the inside with a definite Hawaiian theme. One person behind the counter, he walked us thru the menu and helped us choose. I had bbq pork belly with potatoes and black beans. It was far better than anticipated. My buddy Kenny had a cheese burger with pulled pork, bacon with a side of purple coleslaw. Kenny said it was literally the best cheese burger he ever had. Kenny is 61 and is a cheeseburger expert. Big Kahunas Smokehouse opened recently next door to Shooter's Outpost (Husband Day Care Center) along Hooksett Road (US 3/NH 28). This is their second location to their first eatery, which is Big Kahunas Cafe & Grill in Merrimack. This place is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Big Kahunas Smokehouse is not your typical eatery, which serves up a variety of choices with some Caribbean, Hawaiian and South Pacific flare including smokehouse BBQ entrees, burgers, bowls, sammies, tokos (tacos), hot dogs, smashers, and vegan choices too! The BBQ sauces are homemade including Spicy Caribbean, Maui (no heat), Bali Sweet Soy, Bumbu Peanut Sauce. They also serve breakfast too, but at the time of this review, they open at 10 AM. The prices are moderate, most entrees in the $12-$20 range, slighlty lower than typical prices at Hawaii restaurants (my sister is in charge of 2 restaurants on Oahu and Maui). They also offer draft and bottled/can beer here including 603, Bud Light, Sam Adams, Blue Moon, Pacifico, and Kona Big Wave on draft, bottled cooler drinks, and Kona coffee. The place is order at the counter and there is indoor seating with ample tables, colorful painted walls, decorations, pictures, and a collection of used books to read. There is also outside covered seating along the front and side of the restaurant on the wooden deck. I stopped by recently for dinner takeout since I wanted some BBQ. I ordered Lechon Kawali Pork Belly ($15 plus tax) with 2 sides - Smashers and Cole Slaw. My ordered was packed and ready to go in about 10 minutes. However, when I got home to eat, they gave me Caribbean Pulled Pork instead of the Lechon Kawali Pork Belly I ordered which was the same price at $15. The Pulled Pork was my second choice, which was very tender with mostly lean meat and minimal fat covered with Spicy Caribbean BBQ sauce with a smoky flavor and not too spicy. The smashers (roasted seasoned potatoes) were very good, with a firm texture. The cole slaw (crunchy red cabbage & carrots) had a slightly bitter flavor, which was expected. Other than receiving Pulled Pork instead of the Pork Belly ordered, the food I had was still pretty good. Maybe they ran out since my order receipt was correct. I need to start by thanking the staff at Big Kahuna's because I did not realize it was the type of place you grab a quick, delicious bite to eat. I came in with 13 people... and they accommodated us beautifully. There is ample seating and we were all able to sit together. Each party went up to order at the counter and pay. Every dish came out of that litte, smokehouse kitchen one right after the other. With the limited staff, everyone had their food while it was still hot. Now the food: do yourself a favor and order outside your comfort zone! Everyone loved their meal. I didn't know what to expect from the smashers, but wow, oh wow they good! This was a 50/50 experience. People at work said it was good, and from my perspective it was good, my wife wasn't as impressed. We ordered the brisket (w/ cornbread and veggies) and the pork belly (with beans and roasted jalapenos). THE BAD: When I ordered I asked for the sauce on the side for both dishes. This wasn't done, the sauce was on both dishes. The portion sizes were good, for the most part, the size of the black beans was half beans half onion. The brisket still had portions of fat on it (while i didn't mind this, my wife was immediately turned off and refused to eat any more of this main dish). Bc the cornbread was placed inside the takeout container it got soggy and eventually inedible. THE GOOD: I enjoyed the pork belly, but it looked more like pork, than pork belly. It was a little dry, but the pineapple habanero sauce made up for it. I also tried a spiced ginger beer while I waited for my order and it was a nice aversion to beer. I got to enjoy two meats from a decent establishment. SUGGESTION: if you order the cornbread make sure they leave it outside any to-go container. Dine it, not carry out. If you've never been here maybe start with a sandwich, don't go all out the first time aroubd5like we did. Dine in, the small establishment is cozy and offers music, board games, books and TV selections to make an elongated stay more enjoyable. The place wasn't busy for dine-in, but there were several people picking up for take-out. We ordered from the 'smokehouse entrees' section of the menu. I had the ribs, cornbread, and rice. He had the brisket, coleslaw, and corn bread. Both meats were delicious, the cornbread was fresh, and the sides were just as good. Big Kahuna BBQ is only a few months old in this location and it's not the same as the Cafe in Merrimack. This place focuses on great burgers and Caribbean style BBQ. Great little spot, gives off a very Texas grill vibe on the outside, nice Hawaiian decor on the inside. To reiterate, Im reviewing ONLY their traditional BBQ items, so this is in no reflection to their entire menu. Their burgers look incredible, but I have to have Brisket and Ribs. Brisket is juicy but tough. Had some teriyaki flavor to it. Much tougher than I thought it would be but the only saving grace was that little tiny bit of teriyaki juice that Im not even sure if it was supposed to be there in the first place. Ribs also had teriyaki juice. Meat fell right off, more of a glazed top then a spice rub. Chewy, not much spice, good tasting but noting great. The sides are quite big in proportion so make sure you know what you are paying for. $4 a side is kinda big. Cole Slaw, red cabbage, no flavor, at least it wasn't completely doused in mayo. Smashers. Pressed red potatoes and grilled ike home fries. seasoning is nice. Grilled veggies are plain and simple with a little pepper spice to them. nothing crazy Black beans were pretty typical. No real flavor other than thick black bean. Tiny bit of a heat to it too but not a tasty heat. Jasmin rice ... rice Very Caribbean style with the beans and rice. No Jerk Chicken though? Corn bread is cornbread. What I can really appreciate about this place is their very own unique BBQ sauces, they have 4: Spicy Caribbean Maui (no heat) Bali Sweet Bumbu Peanut The only thing I didn't like about the sauces was the consistency. Authentic sauces should not be thick like ketchup. That being said though these were really good sauces! They're different. They all had a hint of flavor that I couldn't put my finger on but I know I've had it before. Almost like a weird butterscotch or like a orange flavored candle that is questionable. The service at this restaurant is AWFUL. It's honestly shocking considering how good the service was in the Merrimack location. They advertise their hours as closing at 8 PM and I've had the pleasure of being specifically reminded of this when ordering after 7PM and being told that we would be kicked out at 8. Mind you, this was at about 7:20. It was repeated more than once. Tonight I called to place an order for pick up at 7:36. I recognize this is less than ideal but still within the advertised hours and VERY DOABLE to still close at 8. I was told the kitchen was closed because they close at 8. I will not spend my well earned money at this restaurant simply due to the service. I highly recommend others do not or at least be warned. read more

I want to like this place. Don't get me wrong - the food is good. We had brisket and ribs and got to try the sauces and it was enjoyable. And it's in a good and easy to get to location. What I can't get over is that while I waited for my food to be made, everyone I saw who was working in that kitchen, preparing takeout orders, and working in the back wasn't wearing a mask. The guy who took my order wore a mask while taking it, and once he passed the soda machine (which was literally two feet behind him), off the mask came. AND they were all within close proximity of one another while handling these orders. There is a global pandemic going on. People are getting sick and dying. We are a YEAR into this. If this restaurant and its employees can't be BOTHERED to do the bare minimum of wearing a mask while preparing people's food, then where else are they cutting corners? Because I am SURE this is not the only place. I want to give restaurants my business - I KNOW they are struggling right now with profit and paying employees and making ends meet. I know most restrictions on dining inside restaurants are over now but the MASK MANDATE IS NOT. If you care about COVID protocols, this isn't the place for you.
