    Regular molcajete
    Crowden S.

Hoober floober, that was good! Lovey wanted Mexican and figured why not go to Monarquia, our standard place in Amherst. But ... I wanted something new and so, a little research later, came up with La VaKa. Lovey was amenable and so off we went. Well, we have a new fav. The interior is colorful and fun. Lots of traditional Dia del Muerto designs on the tables and chairs, a central bar area that looks like a huge piñata, and so forth. Tons of seating but for our visit on a Monday late afternoon, not crowded at all. I suspect that changes on the weekend. Gratis chips (not homemade but crisp and good) and a mild tomato salsa kept us happy as we scanned the menu. Whew - extensive! And quite a few items that aren't generally seen around here. A molcajete - either meat or seafood caught my eye and that's what we ordered. They say it can feed two but in my eyes it can also feed four. It's a LOT. See the pic. Tons of very tender steak, nicely grilled chicken, shrimp, lengua, a very tasty jalapeño popper wrapped with bacon and a moderately spicy chile for chile lovers (me!). Onions and a bubbly cheese sauce that just kept bubbling. Really delicious. As were the refried beans (definitely above average) and the Mexican rice. Even the bit of guac was a notch above. Next time I'm getting a huarache. First time I've seen that since I left Cali and it's one of my "I like 'em" dishes. And Lovey will be having the camarones a la Diabla because ... they've gotta be yum. They have an highly extensive list of tequilas, orderable by the shot or the small glass, including ones which cost more than a twenty year old scotch. Go order one and let me know how it was! Wide variety of margaritas and cocktails as well. Lots of outside parking and the mall they're in is "nice", not a sketchy place that you feel a bit uncomfortable about being in (looking at you, Elm St in Manchester). We'll be finishing the rest of yesterday's meal tonight and I'm looking forward to exploring more of the menu.

First visit to what will become a regular in our rotation! 2 couples got the last table at 6:15 Sat eve. The place was loud with patrons and live music but we could hear ok at our booth. Everything was delicious, from the warm chips and salsa that greet you to the various entrees (seafood enchiladas and Mar y Tierra were big hits). Everything was fresh, certainly tasted homemade and perfectly seasoned. Full bar, many options for Margaritas (upsell can be pricey but beautiful). The decor is lively and fun, colorful and enhanced the experience. Looking forward to trying on a weeknight when it may be easier to talk ;-)

    Quesabirrias

Went here for dinner with my sister. Great food, drinks, and service. We shared a margarita flight, queso, empanadas, and each got the Quesabirrias. Everything was amazing. I do wish they'd label the margaritas so we knew which was which. Will definitely be back.

Stopped for lunch on a Saturday with my husband. We sat at the bar and service was great. I personally loved the decor and the open kitchen area. I was in awe watching homemade tortillas being rolled out and cooked right there. The food was delicious and genuinely would recommend. The lunch menu was so affordable and impressed with the amount of food. With 2 lunch items and 2 margaritas the bill was less than $50.

Decided to stop by and give this place a try. It's big lots of tables so it's great for bigger groups. Menu has lots of options including a lunch menu. Food was delicious, definitely catered for people who can't handle spicy foods but still tasty. Service was good, I was seated at the bar and got my food quickly.

Now you can't tell by looking at me but born raise form my mom who doesn't speak English so I grew up in Mexican food, authentic Mexican food. So always the test is the beans that's right Mexican know what I'm talking about. A true Mexican restaurant makes good beans. So I ordered my combination. I speak a few Spanish words to the waiter. He kinda looked at me funny. And he asked me about how I knew how to speak Spanish. Well, I told him I was half Mexican. I told him I will be testing the beans that's the true test. Well they passed. The beans were amazing. The chili rellino were amazing. The tamale was great. For all the white people out there this is good Mexican food for all the Mexicans. It's good enough for you to dine. Enjoy.

Full disclosure this is for takeout so maybe it's a better experience inside. Speaking of inside, the ambience of the restaurant was fine. Not too crowded but a handful of patrons. The decor was cute and the music was a nice touch. I ordered a combination plate with a cheese enchilada and a chicken taco with a hard shell. I selected refried beans and Mexican rice as my sides. The sides were tasty. The enchilada was fine but the cheese tasted like American cheese, and the taco was disappointing. I expected a homemade fried hard shell but instead It was something from the grocery store and hardly filled with chicken. A homemade taco shell and more filling would go along way. Plus adding toppings like sour cream and pico-I believe those could be added for an extra cost. My husband ordered the fajita nachos. He said they were good but I was a little thrown off by the American cheese sauce instead of the more traditional melted jack and cheddar cheese for nachos. I really enjoyed their chips and salsa. Check this place out for yourself!

Maybe it was due to the weather or the fact that it's in an out of the way location. The inside is cute and clean. Lots of Mexican artwork. Their menu has lots of options, but we went with a lunch sized fajita quesadilla and the fiesta burrito. They gave us a lot of food for less than $40 - great value. The chips were thin and warm, which I really enjoyed. The salsa was not hot and had a nice hint of garlic. My burrito was served with a healthy serving of guacamole and sour cream, Mexican rice, and black beans. I loved that the beans were not overly salty and everything was well-spiced. The tortilla was thin, which I enjoyed, and was packed with peppers, onions, steak and cheese. My spouse's quesadilla was filling and well proportioned with cheese, peppers, chicken and onions. We were both so stuffed! The service was a little slow, but efficient , and the presentation was beautiful as you'll see in the photos. We will definitely be back to try more food. Maybe I'll see what's spicy next time!

They took our drink orders quickly and brought out the chips and salsa. As always I asked for an extra salsa dish cause I'm super messy. The guy said sure and left but no salsa bowl arrived. The waiter came a minute or two later and so I asked him. He said oh sure and left. He returned quickly and im assuming got distracted because he forgot it too. He said he'd go get it after he put in our order. We ordered and waited and I finally flagged him down again. He did bring a bowl just as they arrived with my husbands food and my side of rice and beans. I guess the cook messed up and so after I finished the beans and rice my tacos arrived. They were very good and he did offer another plate of rice and beans but I told him I wss fine. My only complaint is that I felt they should have taken off a part of the meal or when they offered the beans and rice said it would be no charge. I think it's important to share feedback not only for other diners but also for restaurants owners/…read moreoperators. While it has been awhile since I last wrote a review I thought this dining experience warranted one. Experience: - The Square is super cute and offers ample parking. -The bathrooms smell awful, from the moment you walk in the hallway there is clearly a plumbing issue present which has been present our last two visits.. rough way to start your experience at a restaurant. -The menu, no issue with prices going up but using white out over the prices, hand writing new prices which is barely legible is tacky to say the least. -Following our order the food came out nearly immediately and it was clear the guacamole to our main dishes are made in advance and not done well. - To the mgmt team -3% surcharge to use a credit card is a joke, add it to your price or offer a cash/ debit discount not the other way around. On the food side: -The beans were prepared with way too much salt.. inedible was the way we would describe it.. -Mexican rice was awful. No sign of a single vegetable or herbs... Mexican rice should and can be made flavorful with ease by any chef. -The guacamole was clearly made well in advance and brown... I'm sorry, happy to pay a premium for guac at a restaurant but this product shows no effort to ensure freshness. -Main dishes , both submerged in oil and our chicken was served nearly cold... fajitas served lukewarm and lacking flavor which seems hard to do but that was our experience. - Drinks - the unsweetened ice tea was served carbonated for some odd reason from their soda machine... not drinkable sorry. Service: - servers were kind and attentive, checking in routinely for anything we may need which was deeply appreciated. After a few shots at this restaurant we both agreed there is a reason the restaurant is empty, the food , the ambiance, the overall experience for our hard earned money. TLDR for the restaurant - take pride in your food, take a fresh look at the diners experience, Mexican food should be vibrant, flavorful and delicious, this is by far the worst finished product we have ever had in NH and simply put not worth a visit unless something drastic changes.
