Fried chicken
Ariana G.

I came here to treat myself to a solo lunch during restaurant week 2026 and I had the best experience! I forgot the name of my server but bless his heart, he deserves a raise!!!! He was the kindest soul - he always checked on me and made sure I was taken care of. The vibes inside transported me to New Orleans with its Southern charm and hospitality. They had some decor up for Mardi Gras too. I was able to enjoy a nice cup of coffee while sitting by the window. Gumbo ya-ya (course 1): FIRE. I feel like I've never had a real good serving of gumbo in my life and this really felt so comforting to me. Warmed my soul real good. Add a little bit of their house-made hot sauces to elevate the dish! Fried chicken (course 2): As if the meal couldn't get any better after the gumbo - this fried chicken blew me away! And the portion was huge, especially for restaurant week. The chicken is so crispy. The sweet potato puree elevates this dish so much, creating a sweet n savory bite every time. I would order this again x100. Calas (course 3): To end the meal, I got the Calas - which are similar to beignets. 2 calas came on top of a hazelnut sauce. No comment - just get them and you won't regret it.

Bourbon bread, pudding

A lot more hits than misses and all around really great experience. The ambience is homey and I think tonight they might've been shortstaffed, the servers worked very hard to be attentive. The prices are fair and the wine, cocktail and liquor selection is very good. I had the fried chicken this evening and it was good, very crispy, mild on the flavor, but with some nice seasonings, it could've used a bit more seasoning and the honey on top was amazing. I would've liked a lot more of that delicious honey. The sweet potato spread was delicious with a perfect blend of sweet and smoky. The okra was an amazing surprise, very crispy and flavorful. We tried two desserts, The Appalachian wedding cake and the bourbon bread pudding and they were both outstanding. The wedding cake had the perfect hint of crunch, sweet and tart apples, and light crumb. The bourbon in the bread pudding was incredibly smooth and worked well with the sweetness My friend had the potato wedges with her burger and said the potatoes were great, but the hush puppies she ordered were too dense. The garlic mac & cheese tastes good if you enjoy garlic, for me, it was more out of curiosity than really love of the garlic flavor. We were celebrating a birthday and the staff was so lovely as to bring over a piece of the cake with a birthday candle on the house to celebrate my friend. Very lovely touch to a wonderful evening. I would recommend coming here for cocktails, and some high-quality southern cooking with a modern take on comfort food.

This place has randomly been on my list for a few years because I love southern food and there is barely any in Chicago. I chose it for supper club because it's open on Mondays lol and I'm really glad I did because it ended up being great. They were sadly out of the biscuits so I will need to come back for brunch one day and try those. But we got the cornbread, the mac & cheese, the crabcakes, the fried green tomatoes, the fried chicken, and the strawberry shortcake. The cornbread was wildly good and every time a new order came out of the kitchen we could smell it. I loved the garlic mac & cheese, and the fried chicken was super flavorful (Definitely similar to fried chicken that I tried in Savannah, Georgia). The desserts and part of the menu rotates seasonally so we got to try the seasonal strawberry shortcake, which was excellent. Everything was just super fresh. Our waiter brought us shots after the meal, which was very kind. Really the only complaint I have is that at times the kitchen was a bit slow but since it's an open kitchen, you could see that there were only two chefs and everything came out piping hot. I think it's an underrated place in Chicago and I would definitely come back- Especially for brunch! They were also playing Adele radio the whole time which really kept us going lol

Conmplimentary beignets

One of my favorite places in neighborhood hands down. Been coming here for years for different occasions. Best Bloody Mary, shrimp & grits! Very original and tasty summer drinks like Rhubarb Mojito. Love southern decor. And service is always very knowledgeable & attentive. Will be back soon!

Finally got to try Big Jones! Andersonville is on of my favorite neighborhoods, so I'm always excited to try a new spot here. A friend and I came by Sunday afternoon for a late brunch. It was busy but they were able to seat us at the bar right away. We both ordered spicy bloody marys to start, and this was probably the most interesting bloody mary I've ever had! What looked like grated cheese was actually ginger. And a lot of it! It wasn't my favorite because it was impossible to take a sip of the drink without getting a mouthful of ginger. I wouldn't order this again unfortunately! What I WOULD order again is the #BeatBobbyFlay biscuit sandwich. So good!! A huge buttermilk biscuit is slathered with sweet cream butter and stacked with Creole hot sausage, Swiss cheese, spicy apple chutney, and an egg. We got it with a side of hashbrowns which were perfectly crispy. This was big enough for a friend and I to share. We also got the popovers and beignets - probably didn't need both of these. I would go with the beignets! Our server/bartender was super kind and personable. I want to come back and try the dinner menu!

Some of the best southern food in Chicago is in Andersonville at Big Jones. Highlights: jalapeño cornbread crawfish étouffée crispy duck two ways Skip the dessert tho - it was a bit more dough than flavor. Personable service with great recommendations. Only note is some of the tables are close together, so it's not the most private dining experience.

Tomato Salad - sooo good

Everything we had was so delicious and the service was top notch. Such a great neighborhood gem of a restaurant. It was busy when we went, make sure to grab a reservation. I highly recommend the salad with chicken - the cornbread croutons are to die for and the mac and cheese is deliciously decadent!

Went on a Sunday for brunch so it was pretty packed but we managed to snag a spot at the bar without a wait. The service was great. I thought my shrimp and grits were on the soupy side but that can be a matter of preference. I forgot what the name of our appetizer was (pictured) but it was just ok. I was curious how they have a Vandermil cider on their menu! I'd go back to try dinner.

Big Jones in Chicago is such a gem for Southern comfort food done right We started with what I'm pretty sure was their bread and pickle plate -- and wow. The assortment of warm, golden biscuits and cornbread was perfectly crisp on the outside and fluffy inside. Paired with house-made pickles, chow-chow, and spreads, it was the kind of starter you keep reaching for even when you tell yourself to save room. The balance of tangy, sweet, and savory really set the tone for the meal. For mains, the braised beef (served over creamy grits) was rich, tender, and deeply flavorful. The grits were smooth and buttery, soaking up all that savory sauce beautifully. On the side, the simple butter lettuce salad added a fresh, light contrast that helped cut through the richness. Everything felt comforting but still thoughtfully prepared. And of course -- dessert. The slice of cake topped with a generous dollop of whipped cream was moist and indulgent without being overly sweet. The beignets dusted in powdered sugar and drizzled with chocolate were warm, pillowy, and absolutely irresistible. Messy in the best way. Overall, Big Jones delivers classic Southern flavors with care and authenticity. Cozy atmosphere, comforting dishes, and a menu that makes you want to come back to try more. Definitely a spot worth revisiting.

Fried Chicken (Half) with red beans and rice

This place did not disappoint. Sat outside, great size tables and chairs. This was my first time here. Lucas was awesome. He was so patient as I went back and forth with what to order. He provided great recommendations and made sure to inform us on what our wait time may be based on our order. The food was delicious!! I'm definitely going back!

Great service! Very good gluten free options. I had the catfish and grits. OMG the coffee!!!! That for me was the best part. I am not even a huge coffee drinker, but I loved theirs. I cant wait to go back and try something else. The inside was beautiful and the staff was awesome.

Because it is located in the lobby of the apartment building, it is not something you see from the street. The bar itself is very small, but there are multiple seating options outside of the actual bar. You are permitted to take your drink to the lobby or to the outside patio area. Both are nice and allow for a pleasant drinking experience, but folks that live in the building sit there as well, on laptops or reading. The vibe of the bar is super chill, with this crazy red hue that I love. I am not a big cocktail person per se, but if you are into them like The Queen is, then you are in for a treat. There are also non-alcoholic selections for wines, beers and cocktails for those that require that. In addition they also have bubbles, so that is a win for me. In addition to great cocktails and bubbles, they also do "Summer Movie Nights" on the patio. You can bring a blanket, grab a drink and enjoy. Larry's does not serve food, but you can order something to eat from The Uptown Deli (which has good sandwiches). There is street parking on Sheridan and it is about two blocks from the Lawrence Street El stop (once it opens again). Now that I am aware of its existence, I will be back to chill and have bubbles, and maybe catch a movie.

If I'd just stopped in for a drink or two, we would be fine. My rating would be a three or a four,…read moreand 'have a nice day.' Alas, my catchphrase being "I eat and I know things" means ordering food is a given. That was a mistake, but not as bad as whoever made the decisions behind the Heartbreaker Burger. Let me start with the good. I started with the M&M shot, a simple yet tasty, and not face-melting combo of mescal and Montenegro. I drink spirits neat, so YMMV, but something I wouldn't mind ordering again. Next, I tried the Vieux Carre: a solidly executed classic with balanced flavors and spirit-forward without going overboard. While the bevvies are not mind-blowing, the prices are low - In the year of our Lord 2026, $12-13 for a cocktail in Chicago is almost unheard of outside of happy hour. The vibe is old-timey and retro. Loads of wood, exposed brick, and wallpaper that your great aunt probably had. There are a few game-heads on the walls, for I guess great uncle likes to hunt. There is also a piece of art on the walls that, feels almost like it can go in a museum, but not quite. Let's say this: gentlemen, I would advise against brining a date here, lest you be tempted to look a little too long. Alas, we've now arrived at the abomination that is the, perhaps aptly named, Heartbreaker burger. To start, it was wrapped in foil and tasted through and through as though it's been sitting under a heater for at least an hour. The lettuce within had time to wilt due to the heat, making it go from a positive addition, past neutral, and into negative. The patty missed the mark: In this case, Smasburger applies to the thinness, and not at all to a roasty, crispy, Maillard-y consistency. Between the thin piece of strongly favored meat, and bun a little too large and dense, all other ingredients lost their presence. Further, If felt the burger was so bready, I removed the top bun and turned it into a fork and knife affair. I'm all for burgers getting wider, rather than only so tall one can't open their jaw so far, but not like this. Hardly worth mentioning are the sides of Tater Tots and Queso. Both weren't heartbreaking, but at the same time, wholly unremarkable. Felt as though I could easily beat these with a quick stop at Aldi. I've no complaints about the service. Since I came right around opening, it was very quiet. Still, I was well-taken care of, and things came out relatively quickly. Final verdict: Sweethearts Bar makes inexpensive, solid classic cocktails in a mostly retro vibe. However, the alleged-smashburger left a bad taste in my mouth, literally and figuratively, spoiling the experience. Would return?: Probably not. There was nothing on the menu that I couldn't easily and cheaply recreate myself. Would recommend?: Also probably not. If you're looking to catch up with a group in a space without a TV, Sweethearts and its cheap drinks aren't a bad deal. For all other cases, I would not recommend.

The entrance to the bar is located to the left of Lonesome Rose, which gives it a hideaway feel. The décor is lovely and the vibe is cozy and chill. I kind of felt like I was in a Western bar with the big bull head starting down at me. I would say that for parties of 2 to 4, this is a good joint to hang out in, but any larger groups, I did not see a space to accommodate more than 4 people. The night we were there, they had a cool 80s playlist going and that was nice to sit and chair dance while drinking my cava. The Doctor liked the fact that the beer was really cold. And I loved that they had sparkling wine. There is a small section on the menu for food: chips/salsa, Chile con queso, guacamole, Heartbreaker Burger (Chorizo Smash Patty, Grilled Onion, Cilantro, Chile Con Queso, Pickled Jalapeno, Shredded Lettuce, Jalapeno Ranch, Sesame Seed Bun) and Truck Stop Nachos. I got the Truck Stop Nachos (Black Beans, Queso, Pickled Red Onions, Pickled Peppers, Tomato, Crema). You have the option to add Picadillo Beef, Chorizo, or Carne Asada as protein. But you also have the option to have it vegan. I went with steak. Overall this was a nice snack but would have liked a little more steak added to it. I am not sure if you can order from the menu of Lonesome Rose, but the next time we go, I will ask about that. And I have to remember not to call Lonesome Rose, Lonesome Dove (the novel and mini-series). The selection of cocktails is decent, and it is nice that they have non-alcoholic beverages as well. For those that like hard seltzers, they have those as well as a "Toke Cosmic Berry", which is a THC seltzer. Service was nice, the bartender was attentive and friendly. We will definitely be adding this to our rotation of happy hour places.

Considering inflation in 2022 as well as post pandemic pricing, this place and its daily specials reminds me of dive bar pricing from like 2015.
